Hello everyone and welcome back to Random Rentals, the podcast where we watch movies randomly and then we talk about them. Um as always I am joined by my brother, who goes by Senor Donut on Twitch and now YouTube on his podcast, The Superbanter Brothers. Right?
SPEAKER_01Damn, brother, that that warms my heart that you gave me such an introduction using my Twitch handle, introducing my YouTube podcast.
SPEAKER_03Man, that's going we're going international, folks.
SPEAKER_01But you know what? I'm not the only one that has a Twitch channel and a YouTube channel, because with us, like last time that you heard us, is Twitch Shiny Hunter, Extraordinaire Asha God.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's me.
SPEAKER_03I'm included. Yeah, yeah. We're back again. Um, this is part three of our four-part um, I guess, episode series.
SPEAKER_01Mini-series, yeah.
SPEAKER_03We're watching random horror films. Um today we are talking about the 2017 horror film Annabelle Creation, which chronologically is the beginning of the Annabelle franchise, essentially. Um but it is not the first film timeline-wise of release.
SPEAKER_01Um you're gonna have to explain that, brother, because that's yeah, they're so convoluted.
SPEAKER_03This is a complicated franchise. It spans like over 10 films at this point. I believe it started with the conjuring and kind of went into Annabelle and then went all over the place. Um, but this is what I would say is a good mix of horror and campiness when it comes to the franchise. There are definitely films that go deeper into the campy vibes and then horror more horror vibes. I think it's a good blend of it. Um but yeah, we saw Animal Creation. Um it is directed by David F. Sandberg, who is actually the guy that Warner Brothers got to direct Shazam after this, which is so such a difference in tone. Um and this movie had a pretty uh large ensemble of different people, like different girls in the film who are relatively unknown, and I would say probably to this day are still kind of unknown, just because I don't know much about what they've done besides one of them. Um the uh lead actress is Talitha Bateman as Janice, Lulu Wilson as Linda, and then you have supporting cast, like um, you know, the the other girls that are with them, the um two uh parent parent parental figures, um who is Anthony Lapiglia as Samuel, and then uh Miranda Otto as Esther, who are probably these are probably the most pivotal characters. Um, you know, they're the ones we see the most throughout the film. Samuel is the father, and Esther is the mother who lost their daughter, who was named Annabelle, and so on and so forth, and this can starts the franchise of you know, this horror film franchise. Um you guys are being really quiet, so I don't I don't know what you guys thought of the movie, what you thought of the plot.
SPEAKER_01Um I I'm just quiet because you're educating me on this horror franchise that has uh spanned over 10 films. I have I know nothing about horror movies or their franchises because, as you know, dear listener, I don't like scary movies. So the fact that we've been watching horror movies, um, you know, starting with uh Mr. Crockett, and then you know, going on to my choice, which was not really like it was more kind of thriller suspense, uh, more than horror, although I did make a case for it being considered a horror movie. Um, and then uh this movie, uh Annabelle Creation. Um so I like I said, I know very little to nothing. So the reason I'm quiet is because I'm actually being educated right now by someone who uh I believe is a horror movie aficionado. So news to me. I mean, you watch more horror movies than I do, brother. You are like you are the anarchy to me right now, you know?
unknownUh-huh.
SPEAKER_03So Asha, do you do you know what film is the first in the franchise? Like upon release, like what is the the film that started at all? Uh The Conjuring, from what I from what I remember. It was the Conjuring. I saw that movie in theaters. That movie came out in 2013. This is a franchise that started that long ago, and since then they have just released film after film based on two characters that are not in this movie. Um but they are two characters that are pivotal to the franchise. Um, they're based on real people. They are Ed and Lorraine Warren, who were demon um demonologists, I believe is the term. They studied demons and learned about all that and exercised and whatnot.
SPEAKER_01Um, so the conjuring they made some huge gains then.
SPEAKER_03They they made tons of money. There's also controversy behind them. Yeah. So, you know, just with any, you know, I guess, family who rises to fame, there's gonna be controversy.
SPEAKER_01Um, but we're talking about speak about that because like I'm now I'm my interest is peaked.
SPEAKER_03You might just have to watch the other movies, man. I don't want to find out. I don't know much about the controversy. Asha, do you know much about the controversy between I know it's mostly with Ed Warren?
SPEAKER_00I see, I don't know uh much from like just what I just know that they're like really famous like people, like kind of like the supernatural ghost hunting demonologist um people and stuff like that. And yeah, then like you know I I see I don't want to be wrong about this, but I'm pretty sure someone ended up buying Annabelle from them. Because I know they own Annabelle, or they did.
SPEAKER_03I I believe that recently happened, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And then I think someone has it, has Annabelle now? I don't know if it's either in a mus the museum with I don't know if Zach Bagan still has I don't know if Zack Bagan's from like Ghost, whatever that travel channel show was. I don't know if he has it or not in his little empori uh emporium or whatever the hell it is over there. All I know is is all I know is someone else has it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So let me I'm like I said, I am a complete layman when it comes to uh anything concerning this movie franchise. Is the Exorcist part of this franchise?
SPEAKER_03No, no, okay, okay so the only films that are part of this franchise are any of the films about the nun, the conjuring, um, Annabelle, and surprisingly, a movie they did called La Llorona, The Curse of La Llorona. Yeah, I have no idea how it's connected because I've never seen it. A priest, but I know that film's a priest.
SPEAKER_02Oh, a priest in the franchise. Just a priest, just one character. That's it. They had they had to get money somehow.
SPEAKER_01Bruh, you're telling me you didn't go watch La Llorona.
SPEAKER_02I heard it was bad, so no. I own I own that movie. I own all of them but the newest film of the movie.
SPEAKER_01Look, man. They can't they can't be bangers.
SPEAKER_03You're not wrong.
SPEAKER_01You gotta I you gotta go support these movies, you know.
SPEAKER_03I know that this franchise has been kind of the source of some controversy over time. There's been lawsuits involved with this franchise. I think it has to do with you know the stories and how they tell them, whether it's real or not, um, things like that. Um, Asha did bring up the doll, right? The doll is not originally what it was. It's made to be creepier, it's made to look different, and they you know have a nod to this doll at the end of this film where they show off the real doll, which was a raggedy hand doll. So obviously with film, there's gonna be things that are changed just for theatrics to make it more interesting to casual viewers. Um but you know, to the listener out there, if you're interested at all in anything going on behind the scenes, I would say look into the controversies of stuff, just because sometimes it has to do with like the producer of the films, different things like that, the cases. Um like I said, with the Warrens themselves. I guess you know, Ed is not the greatest guy in the world, and I don't know what kind of is going on behind the scenes with them, but they're not I I think they're dead now. Um yeah, you know, it's it's been some time, but I think they're not alive anymore. Um probably whoever's in charge of the estate now or whatever. Um, but my point is this is a franchise that has gained Warner Brothers probably billions of dollars at this point. They are milking it for all it's worth. They released a movie this year for the conjuring universe. So, you know, it's it doesn't look like it's stopping, even though they said this was gonna be the last film they released this year. I I don't think it will be.
SPEAKER_01What was the movie?
SPEAKER_03Um, The Conjuring Last Rights.
SPEAKER_00That was last year. Oh, I did hear about that. Oh, it was last year? Yeah, last year. They it's uh yeah, it's already out on digital and Blu-ray and all that now. Yeah, I think that's out on HBO Max.
SPEAKER_03But they said corrected it was last year.
SPEAKER_00But but to just pop off what you said, I mean technically you're correct, it's just they said that it was gonna be the last one, and then they announced a new one.
SPEAKER_03So that you see, we said that, but that one made some money, so we're gonna change it up.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, you know. Yeah, anything for money, you know, more money. Smoke him if you got 'em, you know.
SPEAKER_03So this this movie was I actually saw this movie in theaters. Just because, you know, I'm I'm a I'm a proud supporter of the movies. Um, sometimes.
SPEAKER_01But I was about to say, I was about to say sometimes. I don't go all the time. Out to you right now.
SPEAKER_03Um but the the plot for this movie is really simple. It's a bunch of girls who are um, you know, they they're orphans, and instead of going to new homes, they're going to a new orphanage. This family of Samuel and Esther, um, after upon losing their daughter years later, they have decided to open up their home to these, you know, to be an orphanage for these girls who have nowhere else to go. And you know, what they don't mention is that their daughter passed away previously, which we did see in the film at the beginning, but they don't mention it to the girls, they don't mention it to the nun who was there or the father.
SPEAKER_01Quick quick little side note on that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Tell me that that the beginning of this movie where they lost their daughter, couldn't have been like a triple A commercial beginning or something.
SPEAKER_03Oh, because their tire was popped on the side of the road.
SPEAKER_01The tire popped on the side of the road, and the dad is trying to take off the tire and replace it, and then a nut flies off, and the girl chases after it, like wanting to help, right? This could have been avoided if this man had triple A. They would have called roadside assistance, and roadside assistance would have taken care of it, and nobody would have lost their daughter. Thus, invalidating all of this from ever happening.
SPEAKER_03You think there was triple A back then?
SPEAKER_01I mean, probably not, but still. You know, that it could have been it could have been a great tie-in for AAA, it could have been a great get, you know. Triple A and Warner Brothers partnering up with the Annabelle universe to you know make this into a commercial for them.
SPEAKER_03I'm waiting for them to do some kind of collaboration.
SPEAKER_01I'm sorry, I'm being stupid.
SPEAKER_03We're gonna get the McDonald's collaboration. The Annabelle fries.
SPEAKER_00Yo, no, don't be sleeping on them. Uh Hunter's Ramun fries or Roman fries. That's all right. They're so good.
SPEAKER_03It's like literally just like a sprinkle of some seasoning, but apparently it's good. Uh uh, but yeah, the no, the the the plot's really simple, right? It's it's just you get all these girls in one home and some freaky shit happens. Well, that sounded wrong. Some scary stuff happens. All right, some scary stuff happens. Let me rephrase that.
SPEAKER_01Canceled.
SPEAKER_03Um yeah, and that's pretty much the gist of the film. It's very simple. It does kind of go, you know, from the end to tie into the first Annabelle film, um, which happens pretty much after this. Um you guys haven't seen it, but it it's it's pretty much the beginning of the film um that it ties into, which is pretty interesting the way they did it.
SPEAKER_01Okay, wait, one more question.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Does this universe tie into the Amityville horror?
SPEAKER_03No.
SPEAKER_01Okay, that's something completely different then.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but funny enough, that I believe that is a case they worked on.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_03Mm-hmm. They did. Yeah. So it's not it doesn't tie in, but it ties into the people that were investigators of the stuff.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. Gotcha.
SPEAKER_03And I mean, to be honest, these people worked on like hundreds of you know demonic possession cases and stuff. Like, I'm I'm sure there's probably tons of movies that were things that they worked on like in their lifetime. But what did you guys think of the plot? It's very simple, very easy to just kind of dive in and watch. It's it's a pretty simple horror film plot, in my opinion.
SPEAKER_01Yes. I mean the movie was very predictable. Super predictable.
SPEAKER_03And you were even mouthing things that they were probably gonna say next, and you were right.
SPEAKER_01And yeah, I was a hundred percent right. Um just you know, it it wasn't uh there were there were a couple of jump scares that got me, and a couple of things that were like, you know, I'm thinking like it would be ridiculous if this, you know, happened or whatever. Like, not like ridiculous isn't funny or whatever, but like this whenever I watch one of these movies, I put myself in that kind of situation. Like, in the like, if if I were, you know, in this situation, what would I do? Um, but you know, after a certain point it got to some kind of really stupid, ridiculous things. Um I think I think the turning point in this movie, because like at first I was like invested in in like the movie and the jump scares that were happening, I was trying to you know uh predict when they were gonna happen, and that kind of eased my tension a lot.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um but then after after uh one of the main characters got yeeted uh in this film, I think that's when everything just kind of hit the wall and was like, okay, this isn't a scary movie anymore. It's more of a predictable, funny, campy romp. You know?
SPEAKER_03Do you do you feel like it was that moment that made you feel like just disbelief rather than like, oh, this is something that could actually happen?
SPEAKER_01Yes, absolutely. Because the thing is, both you actually it it was it was Asha, right? Asha was like fucking just lost it and corpsed immediately when that happened. When when that happened and Asha started laughing about it, and you started laughing as well because both both of you guys were laughing. I felt ridiculous for being scared of this movie in the first place. Because you know how much of a fucking scaredy cat I am on scary movies. Like, I don't like fucking watching them because you know they they get me uh they build up that anxiety about it, yeah, about being scared, about getting that jump scare. So whenever a good jump scare happens or whatever, it's like fuck like weapons had one of some of the best fucking setups for jump scares that I have ever seen, and fucking was that I was like afterwards, I was still thinking about them, you know. This one had a bunch of predictable uh jump scares, but there were like one or two that really got me, um, just in terms of like shit, fuck. Um because it was it was the yeeting, and then it was also the buildup to the yeeting, which was the reveal of Annabelle being the demon, right? Uh, and it's like you know, kid, like, hey, can you help me? And like, you know, I think it was Luce Lucia, was it? Uh who Leslie, the the uh Linda, I think Linda, Linda, Leslie. I don't fucking know, bro. I wasn't paying attention. Uh so, anyways, I knew it was a fucking L name. So Linda is like, you know, oh my god, it's a it's a spirit. I need to help them find their way. And it's like, you know, can you help me? And it's like, yeah, how can I help you?
SPEAKER_03And then you're thinking of Janice.
SPEAKER_01Jason, you fucking asshole. See, that's what I'm saying.
SPEAKER_03That's your fault.
SPEAKER_01That was one of the characters, anyways. So fucking, you know, Janice asked how they can help the spirit move on, and then the spirit turns around and fucking just turns into a demon, and you know, Asha fucking corpsed, and then that's that's how it all started. That's how the the de-evolution of what was supposed to be scary, you know, turned into something ridiculous for me. And I'm not saying it's bad, I'm not saying it's bad. You, Asha, are more experienced with you know horror movies than I am. So if you think that something is funny and stupid in a horror movie, then that makes me feel stupid and silly for even thinking it was scary. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_00I mean, I mean, yeah, I mean, like I was saying, like towards the end, I was like, this demon is like it's like a sexy demon, like a sexy guy demon. And and that's what threw me off. I was like, this is so silly, and I was saying, like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm a huge fan of like the scary movie franchise by the Wayans brothers, like like the over exaggeration, especially with like the yeeting part, got me because that's basically part of their humor, and those things like you'll see a car, you know, run over a kid, and the kid go just like Team Rocket, you know, Pokemon, you know, and it just kills me every time, and it's just like I'm so used to those movies because they make fun of these kinds of movies, and it's like, you know, it was funny, like it was hilarious, but like it was scary at one point. Like, there was a part where I think it was like two of the older kids, they were like under the sheet making fun of the making fun of the um of Esther, the the the wife or whatever. And you know, they're just oh my god, you know, she's sick. Oh yeah, she's such a creepy little thing. Don't look at her, you know, and then all of a sudden it's like this big, like white face with like burnt eyes, like burnt. Own eyes like all blacked out. Oh, and I'm like, what the I was like, yeah, I was like, what the hell?
SPEAKER_01That part was scary to me. There was another one that like really got me. Where should Annabelle went backwards? Was it the scarecrow? I don't think it was a scarecrow. I'm trying to remember the moment.
SPEAKER_03Was it when she was under the floorboards?
SPEAKER_01No, no, that wasn't super scary because I was expecting it. Um, you know what? I think I think it was the um and I don't laugh at me because it the Harry Potter room. It was not the Harry Potter room. Oh, actually, no, it was. It was the Harry Potter room. Yeah, I heard you jumped at that. Yeah, bro. Okay, so there in the there are two okay, three. There were three moments in this movie that made me legitimately like jump. Um, one of them was that Harry Potter scene. Um, for those of you that don't know, there is a scene um where one of the characters finds uh basically an under-the-stairs um closet area almost. Except it's not really a closet, it's just like you know, um underneath the stairs basically. Um and I fucking Asha baited me, baited me into this fucking jump scare. Oh yeah. It's a fucking master baiter. He just got me like right there. Like, wait, oh no, no, no, no. I didn't mean it like that. I didn't mean it like that. No, no, no. Um you're just you're very good at baiting the expectation. So there was um there was a part where it's dark, right? And like the the character um Linda sees sees the doll sitting there, and as she goes towards it, uh there you see the demon, right? You see uh El Diablo basically, and it comes out of the shadows and just kind of sneaks back into the shadows, like and I was like trying to see if my eyes were playing trick, uh, a trick on me or something. And you know, that's that's when Asha brought it to my attention that there was something there, and I was like, what? So I got closer, and that's when the fucking scare happened. Literally jumped out of my seat. Um, and then the other one, which was very um this one was more like tension for me. It was the the sheet when uh when Janice uh throws over, throws this sheet over the doll so that she doesn't have to look at it, and then it starts moving in the background while she's not looking. And then finally she turns around and she sees that it's moving towards her and using its feet to walk. We don't see this doll move by itself uh at all. Like it move it'll move its head, but it doesn't close its eyes, it doesn't move its arms, it doesn't uh move its legs that you can see until this sheet is put over it. And when the sheet is put over it and it starts walking towards the character, you see the sheet start to kind of get tripped up on the doll's feet as it's walking, and it walks towards you, and the sheet gets pulled ever so slightly down with each step. And you think that something is gonna be under the covers, like you'll you're gonna see the creepy doll, but that that's never paid off because as soon as the sheet comes off, there's nothing under the sheet, and that that startled me because I was expecting something completely different to happen. So it seems like really stupid, like looking back on it, but it's still kind of a one of those like suspenseful moments that adds to the um adds to the scare, I guess. And that was there was the three moments. There was that one under the stairs, there was that one with the sheet, and then God, what was the other one that we were just talking about before all that? Um I forgot. I forgot, but it there were there were three moments. There were three moments for me that uh and then like I said, after Asha Corpse, I was like, okay, I can't take this movie seriously anymore. Because I feel stupid for even trying to take this movie seriously, you know. Um and that's that's nothing that's nothing bad against you, Asha, at all. It's just like it's it's my uh uh the way that I treat scary movies, right? Is I put myself, like I said, I put myself in this situation, and if if you fucking were next to me and you started laughing at the shit that was going on, I would be like, okay, this isn't that bad.
SPEAKER_03Do you feel like you would have taken it more seriously if we didn't watch it together? If you didn't realize that someone else was laughing at it.
SPEAKER_01No, because like like I said, after the after the yeet out of the chair, I was like, nah, this is nah, this is stupid. Because it was too comical. Like, like like Asha was saying, like the fucking it it was very reminiscent of something out of scary movie. Like I have also seen scary movie just because you know they're funny movies and I love that kind of slapstick uh kind of stuff. Um did you Asha question did you ever see uh Don't Be a Menace to South Central while you're drinking your juice in the hood?
SPEAKER_03No. Who calls it the full name?
SPEAKER_01Look, I'm gonna call it its full government name because I respect that movie because it it's it's amazing. Um, so the Wayans brothers worked on this film called Don't Be a Menace to South Central while you're drinking your juice in the hood that takes all of the 90s era um like movies like uh Boys in the Hood and um like it it also I think makes fun of um you know that one Dead Poet Society. Um I I want to say it also like pokes fun at some of the Latino uh movies like Blood in Blood Out, Blood in Blood Out, Colors, American Me, um things like that. Uh and it was a really funny movie. Um, you should check it out if you get a chance. Uh, but we're not talking about that movie, we're talking about this other movie. But the comedy in the in those movies really made that supposed what was supposed to be a horror moment uh really jarring. It was just a very bad juxtaposition of this launch of this poor uh little girl getting shot out of their uh getting shot out of a chair into the ceiling, which you would think, oh, uh gonna hit the ceiling and then it's gonna, you know, either go through the roof or land on the ground or whatever. Um but I if if I saw this movie without you guys watching it with me, when that part would have happened, I would have been like, okay, this is not uh this is not as scary as I thought it was going to be. This is more of a campy movie. And it I think it tried to do the whole you know, campy and horror, but it it went it went too far. Um like it started off on a really good, like, you know, kind of horror suspense vibe, and then after that it just kind of tried to work its way back to that, but it I don't think it ever got back to it.
SPEAKER_03What do you think of this, Asha? What do you think of the the horror vibes?
SPEAKER_00I mean, yeah, this is kind of embarrassing to say, but like the more you're talking about it, the more like creeped out I'm getting, and like I'm like, is the spirit in my room like right now? Like, I'm not even like see, I know you're gonna laugh.
SPEAKER_03Like, it's he's like, I knew you guys were gonna laugh at that.
SPEAKER_01No, no, it's this, I'm not laughing at that. I'm just laughing at like so you're saying that by us talking about this movie and us talking about how stupid it was at the end of it, you're now second guessing what you thought was funny.
SPEAKER_00No, like not the funny parts. I'm talking about like when you talk about like what scared you and everything, I'm like, that's kind of that's kind of valid, you know. But I know like I don't know, like if they wouldn't have kept all of like that like the the the chair scene, like the like you know, she's looked at like eat it out of like the electric chair that gets you know the lift that like lifts up people who um can't go up the stairs, you know, or down the stairs, you know. Like if they didn't have that in it, and maybe even the weird-looking demon that looks kind of like sexy and kind of weird, like it's like I I don't like it looked it looked weird, like it was an incubus. Uh that's what it was, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because I mean it wasn't a female uh demon, it was for sure a male demon, and it's not a succubus, it's an incubus. Um which I so honestly, if this movie did not have that weird, like comedic yeet of this child, I think it would have been a much better scary movie. Like, I think that what they should have done is they should have had her running away terrified of this thing, you know, because she was running, um, even though she had the polio, and the polio was the demon the entire time. This was really a commentary on polio in our poor healthcare system back in the 1920s, um, or whenever this film was set. Um, I'm completely shitting, uh shitting you by the way. Um, but if if they would have had her like run away and then like you know, trip and fall on the stairs, I think that would have been more believable um to make the movie not get that weird kind of like um almost fucking Looney Tunes-esque uh yeet of this character, you know?
SPEAKER_03I think when when I say it earlier, this was like like a mix of uh actual horror and like I guess um you know moments of disbelief. Uh I've seen a few films in this franchise, right?
SPEAKER_01So have you seen all ten of them except for the Yorona?
SPEAKER_03I have not seen all of them, though. But the conjuring to me was it was full horror. I don't remember anything being funny in that film. That was a straight scary movie. And it it made me kind of go back to when I was younger and I saw The Exorcist for their first time. Nowadays, if you watch The Exorcist, you can probably laugh at some parts because there are some parts that were kind of funny. Um like I I don't know if anyone's seen The Exorcist here, but um one of the funniest things I can remember is when she's talking about the demon and she calls him Mr. Howie and or Mr. Howdy, I think. Or Captain Howdy, no, Captain Howdy. And we get like a jump scare moment where it shows the demon's face on the screen for like a split second. It's one of the funniest things to me because it's not scary to me anymore. It was as a kid, but now I can look past that and just see it for what it is. It's a funny little moment. And I think this movie when I saw it in theaters, I remember it being a little scarier. But now watching with you guys, it does feel funnier. And I think it's because in that moment I saw it alone, right? I saw it in the dark, alone, with large speakers, um and I didn't have those moments of like just kind of like thinking something was funny and then waiting till the next moment, if that makes sense. So to me personally, it's funnier now, but I don't know if the environment changes how I feel about it.
SPEAKER_01I kind of want to try something with you guys. Um because I remember watching the movie This Is the End in theaters after a 12-hour shift um right after work. Yes, okay. At the time when I saw this movie, I was crying because I was fucking laughing so hard. Bro, you're delirious. That's what I think. Like, I kind of want to watch this movie again and see if it's still as funny as I remember it, or if it was just the people that I was with, the fact that I had worked 12 hours and hadn't had any sleep. I don't know. I don't know. So I kind of want to watch that movie again. But I have a I have a question for you, Washa. Yeah, there was a moment in this movie where uh Mr. Mullens was fighting against the demon uh that had possessed the spirit of his child, and he was fighting this demon, and you were laughing just like you were that just like you are right now. And I was looking at it as fucking just horrifying, just because I was imagining the pain that this guy was going through getting his digits completely broken and warped by this demon, but you were laughing hysterically, much like you are now. Why? Why did you find that funny?
SPEAKER_00Because it reminded me of like uh because it reminded me of like the that character in spy kids with the bunch of hands or whatever, like a bunch of oh my god, oh my god, you were thinking about spy kids. The hand guy's on the story, bruh.
SPEAKER_01I need to look this. I've never seen spy kids before, but the fact that you were thinking bro, I've never seen it.
SPEAKER_03The fact that you were thinking about uh what's it floop? Yeah, Alan Cummings, yeah. Oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna I'm gonna have to check a clip or something because there ain't no way I'm watching Spy Kids, bro. I'm a fucking 40-year-old man.
SPEAKER_03I love Spy Kids, man. I'll watch that right now.
SPEAKER_00Dude, like like like the little little uh little guy, Juni, like the the young boy, he's married a Megan Trainer, like a pop. Yeah, Megan Trainer. They have a kid together, it's really cool.
SPEAKER_01The all about that bass singer, yeah, yeah. That's a that's a fucking banger of a track, by the way.
SPEAKER_03She married a spike kid. Wow, yeah. What's his name? Juni Cortez. Yeah, the Cortez, yeah.
unknownWow.
SPEAKER_01Anyways, back to this movie. I was curious, dude. You were laughing so fucking much at that part, and I was like, what is so funny about this? This man is getting his digits completely broken. That must be horrifyingly painful.
SPEAKER_00It's the angle, like like it, like if he like if they would have broken it like like sideways, it'd be funnier. Or not funny. What it'd be like, oh my god, but it would have bit his fingers back, like it was like warped, like almost like clay, like it just it was just like silly. I was like, what the yeah.
SPEAKER_01I I guess I just had to be there to really see why it was so funny. Maybe if you had seen spy kids, you would know. If I had seen spy kids, I would have known, I guess.
SPEAKER_00But it was too waxy, like like his hand got melted, and they just try to put it back together, you know that's what it looked like.
SPEAKER_03I don't hate this movie, but it's not it's my favorite of the Annabelle movies.
SPEAKER_01Um how many Annabelle movies have there been? What you know what? Tell me, tell me the fucking tell me all of the movies and give them to me in the order that you should watch them.
SPEAKER_03Um it's kind of crazy, but okay.
SPEAKER_01I mean, I'm just like, if I wanted to watch this movie, this like franchise and get the best understanding of how we got from point A to point Z.
SPEAKER_03I personally would just watch them in the order they released. I I would I don't even think you should watch it chronologically. I think you should just watch it from the release date because it jumps all over the place. Yeah, and it's it's more fun that way, in my opinion. But I do think the first movie they did, which was The Conjuring, was the scariest. Because at each one to a point kind of jumps into like moments of disbelief.
SPEAKER_01Even the conjuring?
SPEAKER_03Not the first one, but everything after that.
SPEAKER_01Everything after that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Once they started, like I think once they started giving the demons a face, that's when it jumped the shark.
SPEAKER_01Never show, never show your demon's face.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Especially conjuring too. That one just I don't know what happened.
SPEAKER_01So it's Annabelle Creation, followed by Annabelle, and then you talking about chronologically? Yes.
SPEAKER_03Um I think.
SPEAKER_01And this is just the Annabelle series. Did they have an Annabelle 2? I'm sure they had an Annabelle 2, right? Annabelle comes home.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's Annabelle Comes Home.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_03So there's three Annabelle films. There are five four conjuring movies? And then two movies of the nun. Yeah. So that's let me see the one. That's nine films in the franchise.
SPEAKER_01Is that including La Llorona?
SPEAKER_02That one's just kind of eh. Yeah. Yeah. So I guess ten with La Llorona. Yeah, because you told you said ten.
SPEAKER_01That's how you opened this podcast.
SPEAKER_03I just threw a number out there. I said I think. I just got lucky. But that's from 2013 to present time. That's pretty crazy.
SPEAKER_01I mean, that's that's almost like a movie every Halloween, you know, because that's when these things come out, right? It's like the Saw franchise.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, they come out like around September, like September up, basically. That's pretty crazy. That's that's a long time.
SPEAKER_01Asha, you love the Saw franchise. Am I correct in assuming that?
SPEAKER_00From what I've seen, yes. I haven't seen all of them, but yes, I love how many Saw movies are there? Ten. There are 11. There would be 11 soon, but are they coming out with another one too? Yeah, which I don't I don't see?
SPEAKER_01Wasn't the guy like a cancer guy or whatever? Like, didn't he have cancer?
SPEAKER_03I don't fucking know, bro.
SPEAKER_01I've never seen like I saw the first one.
SPEAKER_00It's like scream. Third the third one, he technically no. Yes, the third one. He dies. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03No.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I thought he was. Okay, never mind.
SPEAKER_03He's on Michael Myers.
SPEAKER_01Bruh, that's what I thought, man. I thought of these horror guys that came back are the same killer, you know? Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, Freddie Cougar, you know.
SPEAKER_00Well, those, yes.
SPEAKER_01Fucking Leprechaun, you know?
SPEAKER_00Well, that's those are those, but like Scream was different. Like, yeah. Like horror movies. That's kind of like the they walked so you know other movies could run, you know. Like Annabelle come, you know, annabel creation, you know.
SPEAKER_03I I kind of still like watching horror movies like these. Yeah. I think nowadays it's it's become a lot more psychological. Like we have movies like you know, hereditary weapons are weapons. Weapons is so good.
SPEAKER_01Weapons is such a good fucking like like even like even me who hates horror movies, like actually really like that movie.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was it's way better than Barbarian, way better. But I thought I haven't seen it.
SPEAKER_01But it's directed by the same guy, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00It's uh uh Barbariana is so sick, like it's sick, it makes me really sick to think about it. But are you guys watching Resident Evil?
SPEAKER_01Uh I am interested in watching it because I am a fan of the franchise, but you know, I'm hearing that the the movie's gonna be very, very loosely based on the what's it's an original story, it is an original story, but it's it's I think it's taking place in uh raccoon city during the stuff that's going on. So I think maybe some of the characters might make an appearance, maybe, but not like they don't. Not like in a well, here's the thing like I hope they do, but not in a like huge capacity. Like, I think it would be funny to have like them doing stuff in the background of the city while the main characters are doing their thing, but like you never see them, but you like you're only like you only see glimpses of them doing their thing, you know what I mean? If you want a movie about the raccoon city NPCs, yes, that's exactly what I want to see because I think that would be very cool to see because they had they had a video game, I think it was called Resident Evil Survivor, where they had a game about the Raccoon City NPCs, and I think that would be a pretty fun movie to kind of explore because you can do anything with it and still be within the you know the canon of the franchise, I guess.
SPEAKER_03I have a hot take when it comes to these movies. I don't think they should do movies about the stories that have already been told. And kind of like your point, right? You want to diff different stories with if within the universe, but I I don't know. I don't like when when people are like, why don't they just make a movie about the the first game? Like, I bro, I played the game. I don't want to watch a movie about that. I played it. There's cutscenes, there's so much story there. I'm I'm not gonna sit there for two hours watch the same thing.
SPEAKER_01It was almost a Jill Sandwich.
SPEAKER_03See, I don't want to see that movie. That was peak writing, bro.
SPEAKER_01How could you say no to that?
SPEAKER_03I just want stories in the universe. I that's all I want. I want more of the universe, I don't want the same.
SPEAKER_01I hear I hear that the movie's gonna be a bit more comedic uh than a lot of horror, I think.
SPEAKER_03For Resident Evil, yeah. Cool, I'm fine with that.
SPEAKER_01And that's the first movie to me.
SPEAKER_03The first game's not that scary. Bro, they have giant spiders in these these games. I don't know why people think like these.
SPEAKER_01Spiders are scary, bro.
SPEAKER_03This is like if I want a Silent Hill movie, I expect that one to be scary. Silent Hill scarier than Resident Evil by a mile. Like, Resident Evil to me has some scary moments, but it's not an entirely scary franchise.
SPEAKER_01Except for Resident Evil 7.
SPEAKER_03But even at the end, well, you haven't have you got I haven't finished it.
SPEAKER_01No, no. I'm I'm in the middle. I mean, I just left the the house and I'm in a trailer. That's how far I've gotten. And I haven't played it yet because I'm sit I'm scared of playing it because it's terrifying.
SPEAKER_03Once you get to like the end segment, it's not scary anymore. And it's that's that's how it's always been with Resident Evil. Even with Requiem, it's like kind of scary, but then once you start getting to the end, it's not scary anymore.
SPEAKER_01Did you did you hear about that mod that lets you put Thomas the Tank engine in the game?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I did. Thomas the Tank Engine needs to be in everything. Bruh. So how how did you feel about this movie? As since you've never seen any of the the the conjuring franchise or anything like that, do you think this was a good movie to start off with?
SPEAKER_00I mean, I started off with the nun, but um well yeah, I forgot about that. Uh so from me seeing the nun first and then watching this, I think without the post-credit scene, I think it's the way I did it was fine. But if you include the post-credit scene in this movie, I think it's fine to watch this one first, and then maybe the nun, because then it makes more sense, kind of because it'll take it right into where you're like, because like you so for those of you don't know, like at the end of the movie, there's a little nod to like the nut you see the nun, like from like Romania, blah blah blah, and this. Yeah, and then she just shows up and you're like, Okay, who's this character? So if you would watch Anna this one first, watch the postcard scene, and then watch the nun, then it's like, oh, I know who this character is, no.
SPEAKER_01But if you didn't see the postcraft scene, yeah, it's I swear, dude, it is it's like it's like a fucking Marvel movie, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but yeah. I I think they were like soft launching the character basically in this film, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Cause they they not only mention her in the post credit scene, but they also mention her in a photo.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's right. Do you do you remember the name of the demon, Asha? Oh god, I don't know his name. I know it starts with the V.
SPEAKER_01Is it Vecna?
SPEAKER_03Dude, that's the same thing that popped into my head, but it's not Vecta. It's not it's it's sound.
SPEAKER_02I think it's like V Viv Vinic or something like that. Vanik, Vinic, yeah. Varic? Yeah, something like that.
SPEAKER_00Varick. It probably I don't think it's Vic. It might be Varric, I don't know.
SPEAKER_03But yeah, I mean Do you think what do you how do you compare this to the Nun? What do you think is scarier?
SPEAKER_01Uh really putting him on the spot, man.
SPEAKER_03I'm just curious. I've never seen the nun, so I'm I'm I'm wondering, like, is it worth it?
SPEAKER_00I think this one has a lot more scary elements than the nun does. Like, because I'm thinking of the nun, and I'm like, anything that happened in there, like, easily probably wouldn't happen to me in real life, you know. But like this one, it's like it's set in the present, it's set in a setting where anybody could probably be in this setting. And whatever the nun, it's like you're not going to Romania to do some spiritual journey to like try to get be a nun, you know.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's fair.
SPEAKER_00So I don't know. I I think that this one is a lot scary than the nun is. I think the nun has the funny elements to it, just like this one does, but you know. I I think the nun is more of like a mystery. Like, what's going on? What happened? Who's this person? Whereas this one is like, why are these kids not obeying what these adults are telling them to do? Yeah, don't go in the room, don't do this. Oh, let's go in the room and do this. It's like please stop.
SPEAKER_01It's like curiosity. Children have this uh this curiosity that must be satiated. I know they they are the living embodiment of fuck around and find out.
SPEAKER_03So the nuns like the Da Vinci code of the conjunct universe.
SPEAKER_00I'd say so.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Makes sense. What? That's like the easiest way you can describe it.
SPEAKER_01I guess so.
SPEAKER_03Probably all these clues about what's going on. What what did you what did you think about this movie, brother? Did you did you like it? Would you want to see more of it?
SPEAKER_01I would not watch this. No, I would not want. Well, okay, here let me let me rephrase. Um, I am interested, like I wouldn't watch the movies, but I would read a Wikipedia article on it. You know, just to get like the the the thorough point of the story, like I said, I don't like scary movies. Um but i I wouldn't I wouldn't watch the other movies. This film would not be the one that makes me watch the other movies.
SPEAKER_03Do you think this deserves to be a billion-dollar franchise?
SPEAKER_01Just based on this movie alone? Fuck no. Not even. But hey, you know, people like uh like their cheap thrills, and uh they like to be spook uh like uh, you know, get get los spookies during Halloween season. So, and these movies, like I said, come out around the Halloween season usually. So, yeah. That means people are gonna keep on watching them, and because people keep on watching them, they'll they're gonna keep on getting made. As soon as a movie bombs in the theater, that you know, that's when they'll stop making these, you know, these films. But I don't see that happening because the publicity for these movies, like when I used to have cable TV, it was always check out this new film, you know, see see the film that audiences say is making them shit their pants or you know, whatever. Like you they always start it like that, and then they have like uh fucking you know uh night vision like camera showing audiences in the theater or whatever. I brought my cross just to be safe, and then you have like you know, everyone that's watching that going, oh man, that looks really good. We should go watch that, you know. It's like no, no, don't don't do that, don't fall for the fucking, you know, advertising.
SPEAKER_03So you would not fall for the advertising and go watch the um was it paranormal activity, cholos versus witches?
SPEAKER_01Is that like a legit thing? Bro, that's a legit thing. No, you're fucking lying, bro. There is no movie that is called that. It's not called that, but that's what the movie's about. Nah, bro. Nah, I would not fall for the movie.
SPEAKER_03I lied to you.
SPEAKER_01Do you want me to answer that?
SPEAKER_03I mean, I don't think I've ever lied before.
SPEAKER_01That's true. Um, but like I'm not gonna fall for the fucking false advertising telling me that a movie is number one at the box office and should be watched because it's so good. I'm gonna go watch the Super Mario Galaxy movie with my kid because you know my kiddo likes Mario, and I so happen to like Mario, and I want to show Mar Mario to my child. You know, that's the number one movie in America, and that's why I went to I'm just joking. But yeah, but I mean, I uh I I don't know, man, like uh publicity and like marketing for these movies is always like it's the next thing that is paid for, like in droves to get people to come see this movie. When I was driving through LA, I saw so much fucking like advert uh advertisements for the Mario movie. There were like buildings that had fucking like the side of the building just caked Mario everywhere, you know. Um there were sidewalks and uh fences, fencing that had like fucking Mario plastered everywhere. It's like, man, the fucking, you know, the movie industry really wants me to see this Mario movie, you know? Yeah, might as well go do what this ad uh this advertisement is telling me to do.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, man, go support Nintendo, the indie company.
SPEAKER_01I know, right? They're just they're just a playing card company, bro. You gotta support them small playing card companies.
SPEAKER_03Well, now we know how you feel. You you did not enjoy the film enough to continue with this franchise.
SPEAKER_01No, I would not watch this movie again. I would like, yeah, I wouldn't, I wouldn't rent it, I wouldn't watch it again, I wouldn't wait for it to be on streaming, I wouldn't put it on in the background.
SPEAKER_03Oh, fair. What about what about you, Asha? How how did you feel about this film? Are you gonna continue with this franchise? Yeah, continue.
SPEAKER_00He's like donut. This guy's crazy.
SPEAKER_03He doesn't know what he's talking about.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I I'm just just curiosity purposes. I mean, if yeah, if I didn't like I guess if I didn't have them all on DVD, because like I don't know, like I was like, I don't want to buy the conjuring series on Blu-ray, because you know, whatever. We're just gonna do it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. This guy truly supports film.
SPEAKER_01That's right. That's right.
SPEAKER_00Uh but I mean, if I was walking around and if I was in the blockbuster, you know, like well, I could be always, you know. If I go as the blockbuster, you know, like see it on the shelf, I'm like, nah, I'll just, you know, I'll I'll just go rent terrifier instead, you know. That's that's better. That's fair.
SPEAKER_01Isn't that more comedic as well, though?
SPEAKER_03It is. Yeah, but it leans into it. It's really gory. It knows what it is, basically.
SPEAKER_01It knows what it is. I gotta respect that. Gotta respect that.
SPEAKER_00Yep. Gotta respect the hamster in the tube. Anyways, uh, that's uh that's for another time.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00Yes, that happens. Oh, that's rats. Sorry, not a hamster, it's rats.
SPEAKER_01That's even worse, and I don't even know what the context is, but um you can imagine. I don't want to imagine. I do not want to imagine that.
SPEAKER_00I'm sorry, John Lennon. I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_03Anyways. Well, I mean, I'm the one who recommends this movie. Um I haven't seen it since it came out, so this was the second time I've seen it.
SPEAKER_01Hmm. Um it's it's been nine years since you've seen this movie.
SPEAKER_03No, this movie came out in 2017. Oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_03Wow. I just had that realization moment. Dude, this film franchise is old. This is like half my life.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Oh my god. Welcome to feeling your age, brother.
SPEAKER_03The real yeah every day.
SPEAKER_01Okay, quick side note, quick side note that's uh happened to me earlier today that made me made me feel a certain way. Uh no. So there was there was somebody on Threads that was like, I'm doing a project on elderly Twitch streamers. If you're a streamer and born before 2002, please contact me.
SPEAKER_00What?
SPEAKER_01Bruh.
SPEAKER_03Excuse me, elderly. Yes, born in 90 eight, you're a geriatric.
SPEAKER_00God, you're almost there, bro.
SPEAKER_01That's crazy. I was yeah, I like I was not the only one that was triggered.
SPEAKER_03Well, yeah, that's crazy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I just like I was like, why why did why did you wake up and choose violence today? I think their experiment was honestly making the post and seeing how many people interacted with it.
SPEAKER_03Probably, you know, there's no way they really believe like a 25-year-old is elderly.
SPEAKER_01I don't know, man. Kids like little kids think that uh, you know, anybody that's in their 20s is like an elder. That's true. Like, damn, you're so old. I remember working with kids and being that age and them calling me like a fucking old man. It was rude.
SPEAKER_03Your unk status.
SPEAKER_01I ung status at 20, bro.
SPEAKER_03Your unk status, I'm telling you. So keep up with all these new words.
SPEAKER_01Our four-part mini-series is wrapping up. We've watched what Asha recommended, which was Mr. Crockett. We watched what I recommended, which was one hour photo. We've watched what you recommended, which was uh this movie, Annabelle Creation. What's our random movie gonna be? Our movie that none of us have seen.
SPEAKER_03I forgot the name of it.
SPEAKER_00It's that it's it's me. I'm him.
SPEAKER_03Alright, it's him. That's what it's called. It's him.
SPEAKER_00That's the one. That's the one.
SPEAKER_03Jordan Peel. Let's go. It's Jordan Peel direct, uh not directed. He did not direct it. Produced it. But it has one of the Wayne's brothers in it.
SPEAKER_01Yes, I think it's Marlon Waynes that's in it.
SPEAKER_03He's just acting, right? He's not directly involved in the writing process or anything.
SPEAKER_01I don't think so. I could be wrong.
SPEAKER_03I was very interested about the movie him. Um it's I know it's only produced by Jordan Peel, um, but I was very interested to see how it would turn out. I know critically it didn't do that well, but it's it's one of those movies that I feel you should watch and you know come up with your own thoughts on. Um but the premise looked interesting from what I saw. From the trailers, at least.
SPEAKER_01I'm going into this movie completely blind.
SPEAKER_03Then that's the next movie. Unless you guys have anything else to add, that's pretty much all I have for Annabelle.
SPEAKER_01Yes, I got nothing more.
SPEAKER_03This has been a wrap. Until next time, stick around for the next random rental.
