what is a creativity coach.

Okay. Well,

I studied to be

a creativity coach in the early 2000s
with a man named Eric Maisel,

who was sort of the father of this
whole idea of creativity, coaching.

what my training with him taught me was to

00;02;14;04 - 00;02;16;28
really help people know themselves

00;02;16;28 - 00;02;20;24
as creators, to

00;02;20;29 - 00;02;23;32
deepen their understanding
of the creative process

so that they can be more joyful
and more free in not only in

00;02;29;30 - 00;02;35;11
creating their body of work so their art,
but also in creating their lives.

And so I do a lot to try to understand
the kinds of things that block creativity

00;02;40;47 - 00;02;46;03
or that interfere with our ability
to sort of have our creativity flow.

And because my own background
is not in psychotherapy

but is in social science
and sort of social and cultural studies,

that has informed my work in the sense
that when I'm thinking

about creative blocks,
I'm not just thinking about the blocks

00;03;02;55 - 00;03;08;14
in our psychology,
but the way in which our culture itself

00;03;08;19 - 00;03;11;02
and the dynamics of our culture

00;03;11;02 - 00;03;15;12
can block our access
to our creativity.

00;03;15;17 - 00;03;18;47
And so can you speak about

00;03;18;52 - 00;03;23;11
how patterns of domination
versus partnerships

00;03;23;11 - 00;03;27;01
show up
when we think about creativity.

00;03;27;01 - 00;03;30;12
Yes, I mean, it's been such a gift
to be working

00;03;30;12 - 00;03;33;59
with the Center for Partnerships Systems
over these last decade,

00;03;34;04 - 00;03;39;30
while I simultaneously have been doing
so much of my

00;03;39;35 - 00;03;43;44
developing my thinking
and writing around creativity.

00;03;43;48 - 00;03;48;25
So for me,
these things are very intertwined.

00;03;48;30 - 00;03;50;43
We know that domination systems

00;03;50;43 - 00;03;55;45
are inherently anti creative,
and this is for a lot of reasons.

00;03;55;46 - 00;04;01;42
So their hierarchy domination systems
operate as hierarchies of control.

00;04;01;47 - 00;04;06;22
And of course, creativity is this force
that is inherently wild.

00;04;06;31 - 00;04;10;46
It is inherently uncontrollable
by external forces.

00;04;10;46 - 00;04;12;53
It's

00;04;12;58 - 00;04;14;06
imminent.

00;04;14;06 - 00;04;18;40
It's a form of imminent power
that, you know, exists within each of us

00;04;18;45 - 00;04;22;03
and is really not amenable completely ever

00;04;22;08 - 00;04;26;31
to external control.

00;04;26;36 - 00;04;27;32
And we see,

00;04;27;32 - 00;04;31;52
I think, in the culture wars
that we're witnessing in the United States

00;04;31;52 - 00;04;37;29
today, in this impulse to silence diverse
voices, right to silence

00;04;37;29 - 00;04;42;02
the creativity of authors of color, of,
you know, LGBTQ

00;04;42;08 - 00;04;46;03
authors to ban books,

00;04;46;03 - 00;04;50;48
to shut down, libraries to restrict
what teachers can teach.

00;04;50;53 - 00;04;55;38
All of that is a way, you know,
of sort of controlling the narrative,

00;04;55;51 - 00;05;02;44
right control, having control
of a singular story that we all agree.

00;05;02;49 - 00;05;07;19
And as we move toward the partnership
end of the spectrum,

00;05;07;24 - 00;05;12;47
what starts to happen,
I think in partnership cultures

00;05;12;47 - 00;05;19;45
is that there's this recognition
that truth exists in multiple,

00;05;19;55 - 00;05;22;48
you know, there's that there's
multiple truths to be told

00;05;22;48 - 00;05;26;08
and that our perspectives
and our identities shape

00;05;26;13 - 00;05;29;15
the way we see the world and that our job

00;05;29;15 - 00;05;34;08
isn't to pick the one and enforce it on
everybody else,

00;05;34;19 - 00;05;38;13
but is to try to deepen our understanding
of one another's perspectives,

00;05;38;18 - 00;05;43;05
to be respectful of those ways
in which our position

00;05;43;05 - 00;05;46;59
in the world shapes
what we're able to see and not see.

00;05;47;04 - 00;05;51;05
And so

00;05;51;10 - 00;05;55;01
I think the other way that I know

00;05;55;06 - 00;05;57;22
Riane and many others have talked about

00;05;57;22 - 00;06;00;39
creativity in terms of domination systems

00;06;00;44 - 00;06;05;07
has to do with gender and the way
in which domination systems inherently

00;06;05;07 - 00;06;08;23
have that hierarchy of the masculine

00;06;08;28 - 00;06;12;06
is superior, feminine inferior.

00;06;12;11 - 00;06;17;41
And this has translated over time
into our thinking about

00;06;17;46 - 00;06;20;33
creativity in the sense that

00;06;20;33 - 00;06;22;59
the creativity of men is has historically

00;06;22;59 - 00;06;26;22
been valued over the creativity of women.

00;06;26;27 - 00;06;29;44
And so we have, you know, male chefs

00;06;29;49 - 00;06;33;25
and women have been home cooks, right?

00;06;33;30 - 00;06;35;30
Men have been fine artists.

00;06;35;30 - 00;06;38;16
Women are crafters

00;06;38;16 - 00;06;43;08
and sort of access to the training
and to the,

00;06;43;12 - 00;06;47;56
you know, trajectories
that that help people to cultivate their

00;06;47;56 - 00;06;52;50
creativity have been limited for women
and for people of color.

00;06;52;55 - 00;06;58;02
The one other thing I wanted to say around

00;06;58;07 - 00;06;59;20
domination systems and

00;06;59;20 - 00;07;03;47
creativity is one of the things
that happens in domination systems

00;07;03;47 - 00;07;08;19
is the suppression of creativity
through play. In our culture

00;07;08;19 - 00;07;11;32
we see this in the erosion of,

00;07;11;36 - 00;07;15;40
you know, arts programs, music programs

00;07;15;45 - 00;07;18;16
in our schools, and

00;07;18;16 - 00;07;21;06
but also just the erosion of time

00;07;21;06 - 00;07;25;24
that's allocated for children to play.

00;07;25;29 - 00;07;29;23
And across
all that translates across the lifespan.

00;07;29;28 - 00;07;35;03
And that when we as
we lose our access to play.

00;07;35;08 - 00;07;38;10
What's fascinating,
I mean the studies have been done,

00;07;38;22 - 00;07;42;33
that play deprivation

00;07;42;38 - 00;07;46;00
leads to antisocial behavior.

00;07;46;04 - 00;07;50;23
It erodes our ability to think flexibly
and imaginatively

00;07;50;23 - 00;07;55;53
and create solutions to complex problems.

00;07;55;58 - 00;07;57;03
In play,

00;07;57;03 - 00;08;00;39
we learn to see past

00;08;00;39 - 00;08;04;04
how things are
and to see what they could be right

00;08;04;06 - 00;08;08;21
to invent new worlds,
to invent the future.

00;08;08;26 - 00;08;12;09
We get comfortable
with this sort of malleability of reality,

00;08;12;09 - 00;08;16;23
the multiplicity of reality. And

00;08;16;28 - 00;08;17;53
we, I think,

00;08;17;53 - 00;08;21;41
do our
culture, you know, such a disservice

00;08;21;41 - 00;08;27;41
when we don't stand up for the

00;08;27;42 - 00;08;33;32
value of play in terms
of how that sets the stage for that

00;08;33;37 - 00;08;38;44
poly-cultural, healthy cultural ecosystem
that we would want to live in,

00;08;38;44 - 00;08;41;44
that that represents a sort of partnership
vision

00;08;41;57 - 00;08;46;18
of the world.

00;08;46;23 - 00;08;49;34
And I think, the way
in which domination systems,

00;08;49;39 - 00;08;52;17
the reason that we've shut play down

00;08;52;17 - 00;08;57;40
isn't in a sort of overt desire for

00;08;57;45 - 00;09;02;37
sort of control in the traditional
domination system sense.

00;09;02;42 - 00;09;06;14
But it has more to do with our
with the way in which

00;09;06;19 - 00;09;12;14
our particular American culture
has embraced

00;09;12;19 - 00;09;14;59
the ethos of productivity

00;09;14;59 - 00;09;18;28
as its sort of dominant ethos.

00;09;18;36 - 00;09;21;11
If that's the value system,
this ethos of productivity

00;09;21;11 - 00;09;26;55
that we've been living with,
and I've learned from Riane Eisler that

00;09;27;00 - 00;09;30;52
the idea of a caring economy says

00;09;30;57 - 00;09;35;30
we're not valuing the work of care
as we should, right?

00;09;35;30 - 00;09;40;44
We're not valuing the time
and

00;09;40;48 - 00;09;43;59
the energy and the exchange

00;09;43;59 - 00;09;47;08
and the relationship development
and the nurturing and all of that.

00;09;47;08 - 00;09;50;08
That's in the realm of the ethos of care.

00;09;50;15 - 00;09;53;45
You know, the whole point of the caring
economy work is to say,

00;09;53;58 - 00;09;57;03
hey, all this work
that's going on here to care for people

00;09;57;03 - 00;10;01;13
and the care for nature is also productive
work, right?

00;10;01;13 - 00;10;02;27
So we should value it.

00;10;02;27 - 00;10;04;18
We should stand up for it.

00;10;04;18 - 00;10;07;18
And so I thought to myself, well,
we need to do the same thing

00;10;07;20 - 00;10;12;31
for creativity,
because just as productivity drove out,

00;10;12;36 - 00;10;17;30
as sort of the rise of
productivity as our dominant

00;10;17;35 - 00;10;19;46
value system,

00;10;19;46 - 00;10;22;46
you know, the world of care

00;10;22;51 - 00;10;27;47
was sort of shoved to the side
and we shrunk our site.

00;10;27;48 - 00;10;31;40
You know, it's the world of women
and it's not productive

00;10;31;40 - 00;10;33;17
labor, it's reproductive labor.

00;10;33;17 - 00;10;36;39
So we don't have to think about it
in terms of economic value.

00;10;36;44 - 00;10;39;15
And it just happens
out of the goodness of people's hearts.

00;10;39;15 - 00;10;40;27
So good.

00;10;40;27 - 00;10;41;58
That's taken care of.

00;10;41;58 - 00;10;44;31
Where is creativity in that picture?

00;10;44;31 - 00;10;47;20
I think, you know, we
we come from this history

00;10;47;20 - 00;10;51;31
of productivity as this masculine world.

00;10;51;36 - 00;10;54;36
Care is this distinctly feminine world.

00;10;54;45 - 00;11;00;14
Creativity is in this really queer
kind of in-between non gendered space.

00;11;00;14 - 00;11;00;27
Right?

00;11;00;27 - 00;11;03;34
It's not doing,
it's not traditional

00;11;03;34 - 00;11;06;38
women's work, but it's also not
traditional men's work, right?

00;11;06;39 - 00;11;10;49
It's this place
where boundaries and categories

00;11;10;49 - 00;11;16;00
and binaries
and all of that are fluid and,

00;11;16;05 - 00;11;22;05
you know, open for malleable
and open for exploration.

00;11;22;10 - 00;11;26;57
So one of the things I

00;11;27;02 - 00;11;29;18
started to think is, okay,
so what is the?

00;11;29;18 - 00;11;32;18
If we were going to assert

00;11;32;31 - 00;11;36;09
that creativity is itself an ethos,

00;11;36;14 - 00;11;39;10
creativity is a value system,

00;11;39;10 - 00;11;42;02
It is a distinctly third thing.

00;11;42;02 - 00;11;46;04
So I've started to explore
like what is the ethos of creativity?

00;11;46;09 - 00;11;49;28
And it's a really fascinating question,
like, what are the values

00;11;49;39 - 00;11;52;58
that writers, artists, creators share

00;11;53;02 - 00;11;55;42
and what does that
have to teach us in our world?

00;11;55;42 - 00;12;00;29
And I think that at the core of that
is this distinction

00;12;00;29 - 00;12;05;31
between the productive self,
the productivity self.

00;12;05;36 - 00;12;09;46
We are trained with this attitude of
I impose

00;12;09;46 - 00;12;13;50
my will upon a world of things, right?

00;12;13;54 - 00;12;16;54
I make things happen.

00;12;17;07 - 00;12;20;36
I, you know, do the thing.

00;12;20;41 - 00;12;24;06
I get my stuff done.

00;12;24;11 - 00;12;26;17
The creative self and this is

00;12;26;17 - 00;12;31;14
part of the ethos of creativity
says I interact

00;12;31;19 - 00;12;35;24
within a dynamic living world, right?

00;12;35;29 - 00;12;38;22
I am not surrounded by things and objects.

00;12;38;22 - 00;12;43;53
I do not turn the natural world
into a resource or an exploitable.

00;12;43;58 - 00;12;49;29
You know, I don't see a tree as a thing
to be chopped down and turned into profit.

00;12;49;34 - 00;12;54;51
I see a tree as a living being with whom
I can have a relationship.

00;12;54;56 - 00;12;58;39
And, if I'm a painter,
I can deepen that relationship by trying

00;12;58;39 - 00;13;03;51
to capture the spirit or the essence
of that tree, you know, in my painting,

00;13;03;56 - 00;13;07;07
or if I'm a writer,
I can write my poem about that, you know.

00;13;07;17 - 00;13;09;05
So we have this.

00;13;09;05 - 00;13;11;49
I think the creative ethos is

00;13;11;49 - 00;13;17;19
this idea of interactivity,
of interplay

00;13;17;23 - 00;13;21;39
that everything is reciprocal,
two way mutual.

00;13;21;44 - 00;13;24;22
And it's very much the way Riane Eisler

00;13;24;22 - 00;13;28;18
describes the sort of spirit
of partnership systems right?

00;13;28;18 - 00;13;31;43
Is that relationality,

00;13;31;43 - 00;13;36;11
the relationships of mutual respect
and mutual benefit?

00;13;36;16 - 00;13;38;41
You know,

00;13;38;45 - 00;13;39;43
and so

00;13;39;43 - 00;13;45;36
there's this way of being in the world
that says

00;13;45;41 - 00;13;50;44
my work is to, as a creator,

00;13;50;48 - 00;13;55;01
is to heal and involve myself

00;13;55;05 - 00;14;00;10
through my caring
and curious relationships with the world.

00;14;00;15 - 00;14;04;59
And by so doing,
I will also heal and evolve the culture

00;14;05;03 - 00;14;08;01
and I’ll create a culture worth living in,

00;14;08;01 - 00;14;10;45
or at least be part of that.

to really help us move

There's are two parts to the solution

or to the, the directions
we might head at an individual level.

It has to do with really owning

00;14;56;12 - 00;15;00;58
and advocating
for the values of creativity.

00;15;00;58 - 00;15;02;28
What is it?

00;15;02;28 - 00;15;03;02
What is it?

What are the values
we are expressing when we are engaged

00;15;06;40 - 00;15;09;40
in creative play or creative work?

00;15;09;49 - 00;15;11;56
What does that look like?

00;15;11;56 - 00;15;16;15
And those are, as I've said,
you know, profoundly relational values.

00;15;16;15 - 00;15;18;32
They have to do with our

00;15;18;37 - 00;15;21;15
sense of interconnection,

00;15;21;15 - 00;15;26;07
with one another
and with the world around us.

00;15;26;12 - 00;15;30;15
The other is a more systemic answer.

00;15;30;20 - 00;15;33;56
And it really has to do with
a shift in

00;15;33;56 - 00;15;39;13
how we think about time.

00;15;39;18 - 00;15;43;35
Time is really
such a central part of this story

00;15;43;37 - 00;15;49;59
because the vision of time
that we have

00;15;50;03 - 00;15;54;28
inherited from the industrial age,
as we talked about before,

00;15;54;28 - 00;16;00;35
is this time is scarce and linear
and right is clock time.

00;16;00;40 - 00;16;05;06
And if you picture, you know,
when I talk about this in presentations,

00;16;05;06 - 00;16;11;05
in classes, there's a wonderful video clip
from Charlie Chaplin's

00;16;11;10 - 00;16;14;18
1930 whatever movie called Modern Times,

00;16;14;18 - 00;16;18;51
which is his critique of productivity
culture in which

00;16;18;55 - 00;16;22;28
his character is just like being hit
by the pendulum

00;16;22;28 - 00;16;25;51
of the clock and falling down
over and over and over again.

00;16;25;51 - 00;16;26;16
Right.

00;16;26;16 - 00;16;29;03
And
the image of the clock, you know,

00;16;29;03 - 00;16;33;40
looming so large in that film
as this emblem

00;16;33;40 - 00;16;39;12
of how power
is exercised through productivity culture.

00;16;39;16 - 00;16;41;20
So one
of the things I'm really interested in

00;16;41;20 - 00;16;48;11
is, having us expand
our vocabulary of time beyond clock time,

00;16;48;16 - 00;16;52;20
because what creators know about time
and what caregivers know about

00;16;52;20 - 00;16;55;33
time is very different.

00;16;55;38 - 00;17;00;08
Is essentially that time
is a kind of container that changes

00;17;00;08 - 00;17;04;10
shape and feeling depending
on what you're doing with it, right?

00;17;04;15 - 00;17;09;44
So the structural part of this is we see

00;17;09;46 - 00;17;14;46
workplaces, you know, moving toward things
like the four day workweek,

00;17;14;51 - 00;17;19;20
flex time,

00;17;19;25 - 00;17;21;00


00;17;21;00 - 00;17;24;36
time off that you don't have to pretend
to be sick to

00;17;24;39 - 00;17;28;23
to get, right.

00;17;28;28 - 00;17;32;25
Those kinds of workplace shifts

00;17;32;25 - 00;17;38;45
that just move us away from being

00;17;38;50 - 00;17;44;13
in a perpetual state of exhaustion
such that all we can imagine doing is

00;17;44;13 - 00;17;49;10
trying to offer some care to our families
and then taking a nap or falling asleep.

00;17;49;10 - 00;17;49;19
Right.

00;17;49;19 - 00;17;56;13
There's not a
lot left over of that kind of

00;17;56;18 - 00;17;57;21
you know,

00;17;57;21 - 00;18;01;57
room for imagination and dreaming
and envisioning and musing

00;18;01;57 - 00;18;05;41
and you know, all of those kinds of things
that are part of the creative life.

00;18;05;56 - 00;18;08;31
We all need

00;18;08;31 - 00;18;13;12
to retrain ourselves
from thinking about time and task

00;18;13;17 - 00;18;17;32
and focus on a sort of new equation,
which is sort of the quality

00;18;17;32 - 00;18;21;49
of our presence informs
the quality of our interactions

00;18;21;49 - 00;18;25;45
with others,
which informs the quality of our results.

00;18;25;50 - 00;18;30;07
And so I think we see the threads of this
in the culture

00;18;30;07 - 00;18;33;18
of more emphasis on self-care,

00;18;33;23 - 00;18;37;26
more emphasis on the quality of presence.

00;18;37;28 - 00;18;41;26
You know,
when you're making widgets,

00;18;41;30 - 00;18;45;28
it doesn't matter if you're cranky or,

00;18;45;33 - 00;18;49;51
you know, tired or stressed or impatient.

00;18;49;56 - 00;18;54;04
You're there as part of the
machine and you're churning something out.

00;18;54;09 - 00;18;58;01
But as soon as you're
trying to create a result

00;18;58;01 - 00;19;02;34
that requires a sort
of high quality interaction,

00;19;02;39 - 00;19;04;05
it matters

00;19;04;05 - 00;19;07;05
how you show up, the energy
that you bring,

00;19;07;07 - 00;19;11;28
the quality of your spirit, you know,
are you there and enjoy.

00;19;11;32 - 00;19;15;06
So are there tools
that you can speak about or that you've

00;19;15;06 - 00;19;20;25
developed to help us all really get in
touch with our creative selves?

00;19;20;28 - 00;19;24;35
Yeah, well, 

00;19;24;40 - 00;19;27;40
on this productivity, creativity
ethos side.

00;19;27;53 - 00;19;31;20
I've developed some tools, tools
that describe

00;19;31;20 - 00;19;35;20
each of these ethoses
as a set of values and beliefs

00;19;35;24 - 00;19;38;01
and what happens is and so you can kind of

00;19;38;01 - 00;19;40;44
go through and sort of,

00;19;40;44 - 00;19;43;10
you know,
check the ones that, that you hold

00;19;43;10 - 00;19;46;10
most dear from all three of the columns.

00;19;46;14 - 00;19;50;18
And what happens is you begin to realize
like, I hold beliefs and values

00;19;50;18 - 00;19;54;39
from all three of these ethos’s,
productivity, creativity and care.

00;19;54;44 - 00;19;57;44

we think about making, if you have a friend

that makes no sense.

Time cannot be made.
It's just ticking away. Right.

But so thinking about what we already know
about these other ways

of being in time
and giving more value to those.

cyclical map of the creative process

that's really helpful for people

Will I ever write another book?

is so such a critical part

we treat those spaces
where nothing seems to be happening

in productivity, culture, what do you do?

You get to work faster,

you get more restless, you get more busy,
you know, more breathless.

You just like, I got to get through this,
you know, as quickly as possible.

And what creators know is like,
if you sit with that space

and, you know, in Tibetan Buddhism,
there's like 32 forms of consciousness

that are available to you
only in times, right?

That are not available to you
and other times, which is fascinating.

But you sit in that space of not knowing

and trust that it is not the empty
void, it is a fertile void.

And so that piece of that tool.

that particular lesson yesterday in a

in a class, and it's just so powerful
to give people that tool

for accepting naming,
honoring that those times.

And people are like, well I've experience
like, yeah, we all have,

but we don't talk about it
or we talk about it as depression

or we talk about it as lost ness or we,
you know, we have all these ways

of sort of invalidating
the importance of those times.
