I'd like to begin by asking you
to share the difference
00;01;43;29 - 00;01;48;04
between education systems
that are really grounded in partnership
00;01;48;04 - 00;01;52;11
ethos versus
those types of education systems
00;01;52;11 - 00;01;55;45
that really come
from a very entrenched domination
00;01;56;53 - 00;01;59;53
ideology or focus?
00;02;00;20 - 00;02;02;52
Well, in a nutshell, there’re
00;02;02;52 - 00;02;05;51
very few systems in the world that are not
00;02;07;46 - 00;02;10;42
teaching children
on the basis of domination.
00;02;10;42 - 00;02;14;47
I mean, the assumption is
that children are lazy
00;02;14;47 - 00;02;20;13
and won't do what they need to do unless
somebody deprives them or coerces them.
00;02;20;18 - 00;02;24;33
So there's normally a government involved
and it has ideas
00;02;24;33 - 00;02;26;37
about what children need to know.
00;02;26;37 - 00;02;29;39
And some of
it has to do with literacy and,
00;02;30;17 - 00;02;33;47
you know, skill with arithmetic,
and some of it has to do
00;02;33;47 - 00;02;37;26
with being a good citizen
or patriotic and obedient.
00;02;38;13 - 00;02;41;27
But I'd say a domination is the norm.
00;02;42;10 - 00;02;43;24
Now there are degrees.
00;02;43;24 - 00;02;45;28
You know,
we don't see too many schools that
00;02;45;28 - 00;02;49;24
cane children in public these days,
although it does happen.
00;02;49;26 - 00;02;52;34
And I have seen it we don't see
00;02;52;34 - 00;02;56;35
the dunce hats
and sitting kids in the corner.
00;02;56;35 - 00;03;01;31
But you know, sending kids to the office
or suspension or frankly,
00;03;01;47 - 00;03;06;08
you know, living in fear,
I mean, the average modern American
00;03;06;56 - 00;03;11;11
public school has a security guard and,
as you know, some kind
00;03;11;33 - 00;03;15;39
of a metal detector and, you know,
very limited ways of getting in and out
00;03;15;40 - 00;03;19;03
and they live in fear of someone
coming in and shooting.
00;03;19;24 - 00;03;20;24
I'd say that's.
00;03;21;28 - 00;03;23;29
I'm not suggesting we're creating
00;03;23;29 - 00;03;27;17
that dominator culture,
but the kids are certainly experiencing
00;03;27;51 - 00;03;30;31
a culture that's not one of safety
00;03;30;31 - 00;03;33;31
and security and freedom from fear.
00;03;33;58 - 00;03;36;58
And again,
I don't blame the schools for that.
00;03;37;48 - 00;03;41;53
But it is really sad
that so many schools have to do it.
00;03;42;16 - 00;03;45;54
I think also,
just in a normal public school
00;03;46;37 - 00;03;50;27
or many private schools,
I imagine there may be a P.A.
00;03;50;29 - 00;03;54;30
system where, you know, you're
hearing announcements throughout the day.
00;03;54;36 - 00;03;57;55
You know, well, will Johnny Jones
please come to the office?
00;03;57;55 - 00;04;00;25
And remember, today is hopscotch day.
00;04;00;25 - 00;04;05;59
You'll need to bring your tickets
for the big game tomorrow, or whatever.
00;04;06;39 - 00;04;09;21
And this just interrupts
children's concentration
00;04;09;21 - 00;04;12;26
and that sense of being able
00;04;12;26 - 00;04;17;24
to just quietly do their work
or to really attend
00;04;17;29 - 00;04;21;18
and so it's always amazing to me.
00;04;21;18 - 00;04;25;28
We're talking so much in education
these days about executive function
00;04;25;28 - 00;04;31;27
skills, which is essentially the ability
to stay focused, to follow through,
00;04;31;27 - 00;04;35;32
to organize your own time,
to resist temptation and so forth.
00;04;35;59 - 00;04;38;50
But we throw so many obstacles
00;04;38;50 - 00;04;41;07
there are schools that are child
00;04;41;07 - 00;04;45;20
honoring and that very deliberately try
00;04;45;43 - 00;04;49;55
to create a culture
where we're not doing that.
00;04;50;15 - 00;04;53;58
So I think in part, you've really got
to go to the deeper question
00;04;54;56 - 00;04;55;24
What does it
00;04;55;24 - 00;04;58;24
take to create a partnership school?
00;04;59;11 - 00;05;02;15
So again, Riane Eisler, in her
00;05;02;38 - 00;05;06;57
thinking, talks about needing three things
00;05;07;35 - 00;05;10;31
the partnership structure,
00;05;10;31 - 00;05;12;51
a partnership process
00;05;12;51 - 00;05;15;31
and a partnership content.
00;05;15;31 - 00;05;18;30
Montessori has all three.
00;05;20;19 - 00;05;22;02
Specifically,
00;05;22;02 - 00;05;25;52
a partnership structure means that the way
00;05;26;19 - 00;05;30;36
the school is organized,
its policies have got to be oriented
00;05;30;36 - 00;05;36;10
to seeing each child as a universe of one
where we recognize
00;05;36;14 - 00;05;39;21
they learn learning in different ways
and learn at different paces,
00;05;39;52 - 00;05;41;16
and they have different interests.
00;05;41;16 - 00;05;45;39
And yes, there are things
that in our society, this particular
00;05;46;45 - 00;05;50;50
time in history,
there is skill and knowledge
00;05;50;50 - 00;05;56;01
that we would expect a well-educated human
being to understand or to be able to do.
00;05;56;56 - 00;06;00;23
There are also things
that kids need to learn,
00;06;01;01 - 00;06;05;00
but kids don't learn at the same pace
and they don't learn in the same way.
00;06;05;00 - 00;06;08;00
And anyone
who thinks you can teach a course
00;06;08;23 - 00;06;12;05
day by day
and you're going to actually achieve
00;06;12;10 - 00;06;16;20
a reasonable level of knowledge
across the board unless you stack the deck
00;06;16;58 - 00;06;21;31
by gathering together
kids who are good at doing school
00;06;22;39 - 00;06;25;21
is really not thinking very clearly.
00;06;25;21 - 00;06;26;39
It's just not what happens.
00;06;26;39 - 00;06;29;23
You get a bell curve of achievement.
00;06;29;23 - 00;06;32;44
In Montessori
we recognize kids are different.
00;06;33;11 - 00;06;36;10
We recognize that
whatever we do with kids,
00;06;36;21 - 00;06;39;19
some of them are going to be
absolutely in tune with it
00;06;39;19 - 00;06;42;21
and they'll ring like a bell
they’ll be excited,
00;06;42;21 - 00;06;45;36
they'll be absolutely fascinated,
want to learn more.
00;06;45;36 - 00;06;49;23
And there'll be other kids who are okay
and other kids
00;06;49;23 - 00;06;52;25
who really are turned off and or resistant
00;06;52;25 - 00;06;55;34
or anxious or feel phobic about that,
00;06;56;13 - 00;07;00;37
recognizing that people learn
in different ways at different paces.
00;07;00;42 - 00;07;03;27
Part of what you're trying to do is create
00;07;03;27 - 00;07;06;27
a relationship
where the child is ready to learn.
00;07;06;56 - 00;07;10;42
That means as much as anything else,
they have to feel safe
00;07;11;18 - 00;07;12;55
in front of their friends
00;07;12;55 - 00;07;16;29
because what causes
most stress in school is not the teacher.
00;07;16;42 - 00;07;19;24
It's not teacher causing most of the pain.
00;07;19;24 - 00;07;23;18
It's the other students in
and outside of school bullying, whatever
00;07;23;18 - 00;07;26;59
you want to call it, the laughing,
the snickers, the dirty looks.
00;07;27;29 - 00;07;29;59
And so creating a culture
00;07;29;59 - 00;07;33;45
where kids really don't do that
to each other
00;07;33;45 - 00;07;37;41
is essential, obviously,
to get to that culture,
00;07;38;27 - 00;07;42;34
you need to have a system
that really values that culture.
00;07;43;58 - 00;07;44;43
Partially we do it
00;07;44;43 - 00;07;48;55
by having multiple ages together to first
00;07;49;36 - 00;07;52;48
allow kids to learn from older kids
because every kid wants to do
00;07;52;48 - 00;07;55;48
what the big kids can do there
all fascinated by the big kids.
00;07;56;26 - 00;07;59;26
Secondly, it's really good for a kid to be
00;07;59;56 - 00;08;03;04
in that position of entering
00;08;03;26 - 00;08;07;57
the experience, the middle experience
and the oldest in the experience.
00;08;08;29 - 00;08;11;29
So we design our schools around children
00;08;11;34 - 00;08;16;53
and our policies of, again,
how we structure the day or having kids
00;08;16;53 - 00;08;19;52
in a community where there's
00;08;20;01 - 00;08;22;50
minimal turnover
from one year to the next.
00;08;22;50 - 00;08;26;10
And, shall we say, development
00;08;26;10 - 00;08;29;28
of a class culture or a community culture
00;08;29;53 - 00;08;34;03
that doesn't get torn apart
when we have the summer break.
00;08;34;03 - 00;08;36;43
And by the way,
I don't know why we have the summer break
00;08;36;43 - 00;08;39;52
because we're no longer
sending the kids off to the country to
00;08;40;03 - 00;08;41;16
help with the harvest.
00;08;41;16 - 00;08;43;28
But we do a summer break
and everyone's used to it
00;08;43;28 - 00;08;45;46
and that's
what they think is got to happen.
00;08;45;46 - 00;08;49;56
And then we bemoan the loss of learning
after three months of
00;08;50;30 - 00;08;54;22
basically watching cartoons or doing
whatever they do during the summer.
00;08;54;49 - 00;08;59;19
Why can't those recreational things
be built into the school day,
00;08;59;31 - 00;09;01;02
the school year?
00;09;01;02 - 00;09;02;08
I don't know.
00;09;02;08 - 00;09;03;58
Why can't kids take vacation
00;09;03;58 - 00;09;06;16
when they want to take vacation
with their families?
00;09;06;16 - 00;09;07;18
I don't know.
00;09;07;18 - 00;09;10;16
You get a certain
number of days of school, you accomplish
00;09;10;16 - 00;09;14;57
a certain amount So again,
I think it's all about systems.
00;09;15;54 - 00;09;16;59
And to
00;09;16;59 - 00;09;19;59
do this
correctly, you have to have a real plan
00;09;20;01 - 00;09;23;51
for preparing your teachers
and you've got to overcome
00;09;24;52 - 00;09;26;13
a lifetime.
00;09;26;13 - 00;09;29;51
In most people's cases
of being indoctrinated into
00;09;29;51 - 00;09;33;30
a totally different culture
and a totally different idea
00;09;33;48 - 00;09;36;49
of how children relate to each other
00;09;36;49 - 00;09;40;18
and how children relate to adults
and how school is done.
00;09;40;54 - 00;09;42;15
And that's hard.
00;09;42;15 - 00;09;45;09
I mean, we all swear to ourselves
as parents
00;09;45;09 - 00;09;48;43
when we've got kids, we're going to do it
differently than our parents did.
00;09;49;21 - 00;09;52;21
And then we have kids
and we get tired and frustrated.
00;09;52;37 - 00;09;56;04
We hear our mother or father’s
voice coming out of our mouths
00;09;56;04 - 00;09;59;04
and we realize,
Oh my God, I’ve become my mother.
00;09;59;51 - 00;10;01;55
So helping teachers
00;10;01;55 - 00;10;05;11
to learn
how to do it in a totally different way,
00;10;05;47 - 00;10;10;25
which is not only how
to how to evaluate learning
00;10;11;55 - 00;10;12;40
and how
00;10;12;40 - 00;10;16;27
to report
on learning to the administration,
00;10;16;27 - 00;10;19;27
to the family, to the student.
00;10;19;32 - 00;10;21;25
But it's also on
00;10;21;25 - 00;10;25;15
how do you facilitate a child's
love of learning?
00;10;25;15 - 00;10;28;12
How do you
how do you inspire a sense of wonder?
00;10;28;12 - 00;10;31;35
How do you get them really interested
and how do you get them?
00;10;31;44 - 00;10;33;27
I mean, they need to move. Nice.
00;10;33;27 - 00;10;36;30
The last thing that Riane talks about though
00;10;36;34 - 00;10;40;03
in addition to partnership
structure, partnership process,
00;10;40;55 - 00;10;43;22
and we've only glanced on those two
00;10;43;22 - 00;10;46;22
things is partnership content.
00;10;46;31 - 00;10;51;26
And for what it's worth, Montessori comes
the closest of anything
00;10;51;26 - 00;10;55;11
we know
now in terms of covering the content
00;10;55;11 - 00;10;58;16
that Riane speaks about in Tomorrow's
Children.
00;10;59;04 - 00;11;01;11
And we do it imperfectly.
00;11;01;11 - 00;11;04;28
I mean, one of the reasons
why I found her book really
00;11;04;41 - 00;11;07;44
interesting is that she took Montessori.
00;11;07;44 - 00;11;12;12
She mentions Montessori again and again
and again as a point of departure
00;11;12;29 - 00;11;15;21
and suggests
other things that one could do.
00;11;16;22 - 00;11;17;56
And as a
00;11;17;56 - 00;11;21;19
Montessori teacher, educator
and a researcher,
00;11;21;50 - 00;11;27;16
I certainly find what Riane imagined back
when she wrote that book
00;11;27;19 - 00;11;31;21
to be exciting and important
and one of the projects
00;11;31;21 - 00;11;37;10
she's asked us to begin at the Montessori
foundation is to try to get people from
00;11;37;10 - 00;11;41;08
both within the Montessori educational
community, which is pretty large,
00;11;41;42 - 00;11;44;42
100,000 educators in the US,
00;11;45;16 - 00;11;48;05
and anyone from the outside
who is interested
00;11;48;05 - 00;11;51;17
to begin to try to take the ideas
00;11;51;17 - 00;11;54;17
that she wrote about in that book.
00;11;54;21 - 00;11;59;03
We hope to be a second edition
updating it sometime in the near future.
00;11;59;03 - 00;12;03;26
But even if they don’t Riane
in her various books,
00;12;03;47 - 00;12;06;47
most recently, Nurturing our Humanity
00;12;07;00 - 00;12;10;41
really speaks about things
that children ought to know.
00;12;11;22 - 00;12;16;17
Children don't have access to it, whether
it's about the bonobo or about, you know,
00;12;18;00 - 00;12;18;32
the history
00;12;18;32 - 00;12;21;54
of humanity and what archeology
is revealing to us.
00;12;22;17 - 00;12;25;17
As Margaret
Mead was asked and answered, once,
00;12;25;19 - 00;12;29;03
you know, when did civilization begin
and she said it’s when we find
00;12;29;03 - 00;12;34;49
the first skeletal remains of a femur
that was broken and healed,
00;12;35;16 - 00;12;40;20
because for that to happen,
the people of the clan had to care enough
00;12;40;41 - 00;12;44;37
to bring water
and to provide food for this person
00;12;44;37 - 00;12;48;27
until they're able to heal, which would
been an extended period of time.
00;12;48;59 - 00;12;53;34
That's an important
example of what children need to know.
00;12;54;48 - 00;12;56;45
Has there been violence in human history?
00;12;56;45 - 00;12;57;24
Of course.
00;12;57;24 - 00;12;59;56
Is there violence in the world? Yes.
00;12;59;56 - 00;13;02;54
Are we capable of something better? Yes.
00;13;02;54 - 00;13;06;51
And that's
what we're trying to do, is teach children
00;13;06;51 - 00;13;11;07
not just about it in theory we
want to teach them to live it
00;13;11;52 - 00;13;14;42
to do it everyday just as second nature.
00;13;16;03 - 00;13;17;13
Can you speak
00;13;17;13 - 00;13;22;36
a bit about the partnership
based systems of education
00;13;22;36 - 00;13;25;56
and the preparation
that they're providing our
00;13;25;56 - 00;13;31;36
youth, our children
and youth for being successful adults,
00;13;31;36 - 00;13;35;58
for being able to be functioning adults
in this rapidly evolving
00;13;36;25 - 00;13;39;25
technologically oriented culture?
00;13;40;23 - 00;13;44;49
Well, again, I have seen very few schools
that I would call partnership
00;13;44;49 - 00;13;47;50
oriented other than Montessori schools,
but I have seen some,
00;13;48;32 - 00;13;51;50
and the common thread
that I see across them
00;13;52;18 - 00;13;58;06
is young people who look at those schools
as the best educational experiences
00;13;58;07 - 00;14;01;40
they had, whether they attended them
only for a few years
00;14;01;40 - 00;14;04;40
or all the way
00;14;04;56 - 00;14;08;32
that they encourage them
to find their own voice
00;14;08;32 - 00;14;12;50
to think for themselves to think deeply
to think outside of the box.
00;14;13;21 - 00;14;17;31
So they're usually kids who feel like
they have agency in their life.
00;14;17;31 - 00;14;20;13
They were given a choice,
they were given respect.
00;14;21;28 - 00;14;22;03
They seemed to
00;14;22;03 - 00;14;25;02
have really good people skills.
00;14;25;02 - 00;14;28;02
They certainly tend to
00;14;28;27 - 00;14;32;28
be more oriented
to thinking outside of the box.
00;14;32;28 - 00;14;36;35
And initiating projects
and coming up with novel solutions.
00;14;37;00 - 00;14;40;00
So if you Google, for example,
00;14;40;12 - 00;14;43;12
the word Montessori Mafia,
00;14;43;39 - 00;14;46;01
you'll come up with many tens
00;14;46;01 - 00;14;50;13
of thousands of articles,
mostly from the world's financial
00;14;50;13 - 00;14;54;48
press and business press,
talking about the uncanny number
00;14;55;11 - 00;14;58;22
of innovators and leaders around the world
00;14;58;49 - 00;15;02;20
who attribute their Montessori education
to what they are.
00;15;02;45 - 00;15;06;22
Somebody suggested
if it's almost like it is a conspiracy,
00;15;06;35 - 00;15;09;39
which is where the mafia came in
00;15;09;44 - 00;15;13;11
but I think that basically
you see higher levels of mental health
00;15;13;46 - 00;15;17;13
they may or may not have the highest test
scores, but
00;15;17;13 - 00;15;22;00
the level of mental health and happiness
seems to be much, much higher.
00;15;22;33 - 00;15;26;50
So I think that's some of what
I have sensed over my years.
00;15;26;50 - 00;15;31;54
I mean, certainly running a Montessori
school myself for almost 50 years now,
00;15;32;42 - 00;15;37;40
I've rarely had to deal with a discipline
problem of any significance.
00;15;37;40 - 00;15;41;35
And normally, when a child does
do something inappropriate,
00;15;41;35 - 00;15;46;49
that just becomes an opportunity
for a real discussion and a moral lesson
00;15;46;49 - 00;15;50;18
among the people affected,
where they figure it out together
00;15;51;26 - 00;15;52;09
instead of
00;15;52;09 - 00;15;56;03
simply, you know, punishing
somebody So, Tim,
00;15;56;03 - 00;15;59;06
what next for policymakers,
00;15;59;06 - 00;16;02;35
educators, parents, students?
00;16;03;02 - 00;16;07;27
What needs to happen
to transform education systems
00;16;07;27 - 00;16;12;23
across the world to partnership
based models such as Montessori?
00;16;12;54 - 00;16;14;08
Well, short.
00;16;14;08 - 00;16;18;36
I can tell you that most colleges
of education in America,
00;16;19;33 - 00;16;22;33
from what I have been told
and what I've heard from
00;16;22;51 - 00;16;26;36
attending meetings with the deans
in these schools of education,
00;16;27;05 - 00;16;30;24
they're well aware modern brain research.
00;16;30;24 - 00;16;36;53
They know that the way schools are
traditionally organized are not logical.
00;16;36;53 - 00;16;39;52
They're inconsistent with
what would be best practice.
00;16;40;19 - 00;16;44;42
They're desperately trying to help
teachers to learn how to make change.
00;16;45;09 - 00;16;48;34
And what they say is we send these
young people out into the classrooms
00;16;48;52 - 00;16;52;57
and they very quickly become disillusioned
because they get there
00;16;53;20 - 00;16;54;05
and they're told
00;16;54;05 - 00;16;55;24
this is what you're going to teach
00;16;55;24 - 00;16;58;17
and this is the pacing guide
you're going to follow.
00;16;58;17 - 00;17;01;55
And this is the test
you have prepare kids to take.
00;17;02;09 - 00;17;05;05
And this is the consequence
If your kids don't look good
00;17;05;05 - 00;17;10;51
, you know, it's very, very difficult.
00;17;10;51 - 00;17;13;16
Go ahead.
00;17;13;16 - 00;17;16;28
We will work on it in multiple ways.
00;17;16;36 - 00;17;21;59
We look at from the point of view
of trying to help the people
00;17;22;17 - 00;17;24;45
who are making the decisions
at the schools
00;17;24;45 - 00;17;29;22
the people in the state legislatures,
the people in the state
00;17;29;22 - 00;17;34;04
departments of education,
the local school board, the principals.
00;17;34;26 - 00;17;39;03
We're trying on the one level to help them
to see there is another better way.
00;17;39;37 - 00;17;42;19
There's a very interesting documentary
00;17;42;19 - 00;17;45;04
that was made about
Montessori for that purpose
00;17;46;02 - 00;17;47;01
just a few years
00;17;47;01 - 00;17;50;53
ago called Inside Montessori,
and I certainly recommend

who seriously interested in learning more.

Showing how Montessori is being used

around the country in public
and private settings

to make a real difference
in the lives of children.

So first you have to get people
to at least be aware something else
00;18;31;24 - 00;18;34;24
might be part of the answer.

Secondly, we've got to get more research.
00;18;36;55 - 00;18;40;53
We've got some good research out there,
but it's usually done by people
00;18;40;53 - 00;18;45;42
who have a direct connection to Montessori
which is obviously going to be suspect.

So we need more and more research done
on fully implemented Montessori programs
00;18;52;21 - 00;18;56;51
by people who are dispassionate
and objective outside evaluators.
00;18;57;34 - 00;18;58;43
And that's beginning to happen.

There's a research center
at the University of Kansas, for example,
00;19;02;18 - 00;19;07;12
that has a national journal of Research
done in the United States.

Other countries have been doing
this far longer than we have.

Thirdly, we need to try to influence
our universities,
00;19;15;10 - 00;19;18;51
our schools of education,
to help them understand that
00;19;20;00 - 00;19;22;02
if they really want
00;19;22;02 - 00;19;25;02
to help their teachers
to learn how to do it,
00;19;25;56 - 00;19;29;57
this may not be the only thing they can do
because most of the programs
00;19;29;57 - 00;19;34;10
that our teachers teach are graduates
will go into, will not be Montessori.
00;19;34;32 - 00;19;37;32
But increasingly we're seeing universities
setting up
00;19;38;33 - 00;19;41;43
or affiliating with Montessori
teacher education
00;19;41;43 - 00;19;45;25
programs
to give them a holistic systems approach.
00;19;45;53 - 00;19;50;14
Because if you train teachers correctly,
there's a reasonable chance
00;19;50;14 - 00;19;54;06
they'll know how to create and sustain
these kinds of programs.
00;19;55;16 - 00;19;58;16
Another thing we have to do
is we have to reach parents
00;19;58;30 - 00;20;04;12
because, you know, our public schools
are really run at the will of the families
00;20;05;32 - 00;20;07;40
If we really want to do something,
00;20;07;40 - 00;20;11;16
we've got to reach parents
to help them to again
00;20;11;52 - 00;20;15;19
begin to understand there really are time
00;20;15;19 - 00;20;18;19
tested, globally tested,
00;20;18;45 - 00;20;20;32
every different culture.

I mean, every country in the world
except North Korea has Montessori schools,
00;20;26;10 - 00;20;29;07
some of the biggest schools in the world
are Montessori

schools just look up the Guinness
Book of World Records,

the city Montessori school in Lucknow,
India, has 46,000 students.

I think now.

Under one administrative control.

So this is something
that the rest of the world
00;20;45;38 - 00;20;48;38
is really running with very quickly.

And it's America that's the most resistant

or it's certainly
among the most resistant.

We’d like to see it
grow faster than it is now.

But the more parents understand it,
the more likely

we are ready to get the kind of change,
whether they call it Montessori

or they

unpack it and say, these are things
we want in our schools.

Again, there's
no one right way to educate a child.

The best schools are designed
for differences

and the best schools see each child

as a unique human being.

So we're not suggesting
that one thing is right for everybody.

But we do think that in

if we're going to survive as a species,
we better be teaching children

how to live together in some kind of peace
and mental health. Wow.
