an intimate relationship

domestic violence in it,

sort of a deep dive

to try to figure out

what the heck happened
to me.

term coercive control,

And after doing so,
I was like, oh,

this is spot on
for what I experienced.

because I'd never heard
the term before,

other people weren't
discussing this term.

bad experiences.

through a custody battle

controller. And so on

those cases, I'll do

an assessment

protect themselves

of that system

that are dominating
or oppressing

are invisible to us

who may be experiencing
coercive control,

about how you developed
this model?

Sure. So,

I was going through

a situation where
there was a protective

order in place

00:06:52:07 - 00:06:54:00
and there had been
protective

00:06:54:00 - 00:06:57:16
order violations,
and there was a,

00:06:58:06 - 00:07:01:06
a protective order
violation case pending,

00:07:01:18 - 00:07:04:10
which had been pending
for more

00:07:04:10 - 00:07:05:19
more than two years,
almost

00:07:05:19 - 00:07:07:02
three
years at that point,

00:07:08:04 - 00:07:10:23
when the
county attorney's office

00:07:10:23 - 00:07:13:12
advised me
that they planned

00:07:13:12 - 00:07:16:12
to dismiss the case.

00:07:18:00 - 00:07:21:07
And, that was very
shocking to me.

I had been hoping
for a lifetime

00:07:25:04 - 00:07:28:03
protective order
to come from that case,

00:07:28:11 - 00:07:30:07
for myself
and hopefully to protect

00:07:30:07 - 00:07:31:20
my children as well.

00:07:31:20 - 00:07:34:22
And so but apparently,
because of Covid,

00:07:35:08 - 00:07:37:20
all these cases
had stacked up

00:07:37:20 - 00:07:39:07
and the county
attorney's office

00:07:39:07 - 00:07:41:13
simply couldn't
prosecute them all.

00:07:41:13 - 00:07:43:14
And so they were,

00:07:43:14 - 00:07:45:08
this was how they were
going to handle that.

00:07:45:08 - 00:07:46:14
They were either going
to plead them out

00:07:46:14 - 00:07:49:01
or they were going to
dismiss them altogether.

So the stress from that,

what it
it caused my PTSD,

00:07:57:04 - 00:07:59:11
which I actually had
complex

00:07:59:11 - 00:08:02:04
post-traumatic stress
at the time,

00:08:02:04 - 00:08:05:04
and it caused all of
my symptoms to flare up.

00:08:05:14 - 00:08:08:13
And I was having
increased panic attacks.

00:08:08:13 - 00:08:10:20
I was having
increased flashbacks,

00:08:12:13 - 00:08:13:05
all sorts of

00:08:13:05 - 00:08:16:05
symptoms that
were really negative and

00:08:17:05 - 00:08:19:05
distressing.

And, and the middle
of one night, I woke up.

It was maybe 1
or 2:00 in the morning,

and my heart was racing.

It was pounding
out of my chest.

00:08:30:09 - 00:08:33:09
I couldn't
catch my breath.

I was I was just
overwhelmed by this

feeling of terror
and dread of

what could happen next.

Because I felt like
I was being failed

by the system.

And it was difficult
enough to deal with

a coercive controller,
but I but my body

was responding
to this new threat,

this systemic

coercive control that
I was experiencing now

in the criminal justice

and family court system.

And I was,

I must have been an hour
like that

with my heart racing
and I couldn't breathe.

finally, at some point,

myself, oh, this must be

what it feels like
to die in quicksand.

And at the time,
I wasn't thinking, oh,

yay, a new name for my
for my training model.

But that's what
it turned into.

I was told by a CPS
worker

following an assault
by my partner,

that the emergency
protective order

I had gotten, if I did
not go into court

and get that emergency
protective order

extended into a two year
protective order,

then they could take my

children from me for
failing to protect them.

And that's
a very coercive thing

to do to threaten
someone who's already

been victimized
by domestic

violence, domestic abuse
and coercive control.

And then to say, well,

if you don't do what
I say,

then the government's
going to take your kids,

So there are things

like that throughout
the system and, and

targeted
victims of coercive

control run into those
over and over again.

And we start to

see that,
oh, this is a lot bigger

than one person doing
harm.

There are there's
this domination mindset

in all of these systems.

And it's not 100% right
