Behnaz:

Today, we talk about one of life's most important and most fascinating things hope. Hope is what gets us through difficult times. It's what inspires us to keep going, even when the path ahead seems dark. It lifts our spirits and gives us the strength to overcome challenges. So what exactly is hope? At its core, hope is a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. It involves wanting something and believing that it could become a reality. Hope provides us with optimism, even in uncertain or difficult situations. When we feel hopeful, we have faith that good things are possible. Many see hope as a choice we make each day. We can choose to be hopeful or choose to give in to despair. Even in our darkest moments, hope gives us the option to believe that better days are ahead. It's a choice to keep believing in possibilities rather than dwelling on problems. The hopeful person sees opportunities where others see obstacles. They have faith that challenges are just temporary and solutions exist. To further explain how hope is a choice, I want to share a personal story.

Behnaz:

A few years ago, I went through a very difficult breakup. It felt like my world was falling apart and I didn't think I'd ever be happy again. Every day was a struggle just to get out of bed. But I soon realized I had a choice. I could immerse in self-pity and despair or I could choose to be hopeful. The super positive person that I am, I started making a daily effort to focus on the good in my life rather than my heartbreak. I got professional help and surrounded myself with supportive friends and, of course, my family. On tough days, I reminded myself that in time the pain would lessen. Slowly, my outlook improved. I began to have faith that I was strong enough to get through this and that better relations and ships were ahead. Choosing hope lifted me out of that dark place and empowered me to move on with my life. My experience shows how hope is a choice we make in how we frame our mindset. We can believe our current difficulties are temporary or permanent, based on the perspective we adopt. Hopeful thinking helped me reframe my breakup as a lesson that would make me stronger, rather than the end of the world. I had the power to be optimistic. That changed my entire recovery process.

Behnaz:

Hope also gives us motivation. When we are hopeful, we are more likely to keep trying and preserving toward our goals. We have the drive to take action because we believe our efforts can make a difference. Most people may give up easily, but hopeful see every small step as progress. They know that with time, focus and work, their hopes have a chance of being fulfilled.

Behnaz:

Scientists have extensively studied the physical and mental health benefits of being a hopeful person. One important study published in the Journal of Health Psychology followed over 800 adults for 20 years to examine the effects of optimism and hope and longevity. The researchers found that participants with higher levels of optimism lived an average of 11% longer than their pessimistic counterparts. They were also less likely to develop cardiovascular and other chronic health issues over the two decades. Other studies have shown that hope is linked to lower rates of depression and better coping abilities during difficult life events like job loss or medical diagnosis. It also contributes to better cardiovascular health by reducing stress levels. When we are stressed, our bodies produce more cortisol, which can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease and other issues over time. But hopeful thinking literally helps our bodies at a physiological level by lowering cortisol production during challenges. Our minds and body are in a healthier state to deal with problems when we approach them with optimism rather than negativity.

Behnaz:

Hope also plays a key role in relationships. One study published in Personal Relationships looked at levels of hope in over 300 romantic couples. They found that people who were more hopeful about their relationships reported being more satisfied and committed to their partners overall. During conflicts, hopeful partners were better able to problem-solve constructively rather than attack each other. They had faith that issues were solvable if they worked as a team. Other research has shown that hopeful parents tend to have children with better mental health, higher self-esteem and greater achievement levels. Their optimism seems to rub off on their kids and empower them to succeed academically and socially. Children of hopeful families also cope better with life stresses like divorce or a parent's job loss. They learn from their parent's example that challenges can be overcome through preservants and teamwork rather than fear or avoidance.

Behnaz:

Even in our careers and work lives, hope makes a positive difference. One study in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology followed over 500 employees and tracked levels of engagement, performance, turnover rates and more based on measured hope scores. They found hopeful employees were 37% more productive, had higher job satisfaction rates and were half as likely to quit their jobs compared to colleagues with less hope. Hopeful workers believed their efforts were worthwhile and that opportunities existed for career growth if they kept learning and improving. In the Entrepreneurship Board, research shows hopeful founders are more resilient when facing setbacks in their businesses. A study in the Journal of Business Venturing interviewed three entrepreneurs who had each started multiple failed ventures. They found that ones who kept pursuing their startup dreams even after financial losses were those who maintained hope in their long-term vision. Rather than seeing failures as the end, they had faith in their ideas and an eventual success if they learned from their mistakes. Their hope empowered them to preserve long-term despite short-term disappointments. So in summary, the research is clear Hope provides extensive mental, physical and rational benefits that improve our quality of life.

Behnaz:

It lifts our moods, strengthens our health and empowers better problem-solving. Hope allows us to believe in ourselves and our capabilities, even when facing uncertainty or adversity. This optimism is a protective factor for both individuals and their communities. So where does hope come from? For many, hope is found through spirituality and faith in God or a higher power. Believing in a greater purpose beyond ourselves gives us hope that life has meaning, even in suffering. It provides reassurance that we are not alone in our struggles and that a loving force is watching over us and rooting for our success. Prayer and scripture reading cultivate hope for spiritual people that positive change is always possible through divine help.

Behnaz:

For others, hope comes from within. It's a choice we make each day to be optimistic. Rather than giving in to despair or negativity, we have to consciously work to reframe our mindset and look for the good, even in small doses. Making gratitude lists, focusing on blessings rather than complaints and celebrating progress nurtures an internal sense of hope, even when external factors seem bleak. Positive self-talk like I've overcome hard things before, but I can get through this too, becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Behnaz:

Our relationships with supportive friends and family can also cultivate hope. Knowing we have people in our corner boosts our confidence that we can get through hard times. Hopeful friends encourage each other and celebrate even small wins. They lift each other's spirits and provide perspective during low moments. A supportive community gives us faith in humanity and in our own ability to help others in need. Group activities, volunteering together and acts of service spread hope within relationships.

Behnaz:

Nature can also inspire hope. Being in natural setting like parks, gardens or hiking trails has powerful restorative effects on our mental health and perspective. Taking a walk outside on a sunny day immediately lifts our mood. Appreciating the beauty of nature reminds us that life continues to thrive despite difficulties. It gives us perspective on our small role in the bigger picture and reassures us that renewal is always possible, even on bleak days. Nature shows us that new growth and change are constant through the seasons. The resilience of flora and fauna cultivates hope within us that we too can bounce back from challenges.

Behnaz:

As you can see, hope is a powerful resource that impacts every area of our lives. It gives meaning, motivation, health and strength through difficult periods. While external factors influence our hope levels, ultimately hope is a choice we can make every day. We have the power to be optimistic. Rather than dwelling on problems, we can focus on possibilities instead of limitations. So, in closing, I encourage you to cultivate hope however you can, through spirituality, relationships, nature or positive self-talk. Make hope a daily habit. Write small wins and keep striving toward your goal step by step. Have faith that, with effort, solutions can be found. Remember that you always have the option to be hopeful, no matter what difficulties you face. Hope lifts our spirits and empowers us to overcome any challenge.
