In this third installment of the series on how grandfathers help instill hope in their children, I am speaking with Dr. Steve Wages of the Cloverdale Center for Youth & Family Ministries at Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama. A Grandparent’s Prayer

O Heavenly Father, make me a better grandparent. Teach me to understand my
grandchildren, to listen patiently to what they have to say, and to answer all
their questions kindly. Make me as attentive to them as I would have them be
to me. Forbid that I should be indifferent in the face of their mistakes, may I
always be mindful of the importance of my influence on their lives.

Guide me day by day that I may demonstrate by all I say and do that faith produces
eternal hope, character is demonstrated in righteousness, and honesty brings
happiness. And when I feel old and out of sorts, help me, O Lord, to hold my
tongue.

May I ever be mindful that my grandchildren are children and I should
not expect of them the judgment of adults. Help me to teach them to earn their
own way and learn to do for themselves. Make me fair and just and kind. And
fit me, O Lord, to be loved and respected and imitated by my grandchildren.
