Have you ever looked around and been troubled by what you see going on in the world.  It seems like we're surrounded with trouble and dispair. The bad rules and goood seems to be in retreat or defeated.

Well, this has happened for years.  Imagine Noah looking around at his world where everything is evil.  Or, as the subject of this episode, Habakkuk looks around and only sees violence and injustice.  So he turns to God with questions.

In today's episode we look at that and God's response and how that affect us and, what we can do about it.

Speaker

Hello friends, I'm your host, Dr. Dave Leighton, and thank you for joining me on our journey to hope. This podcast is a place where together we explore how to discover, sustain, and sometimes regain hope. Wherever you're listening, let's take a deep breath, open our hearts, and continue this journey towards hope. And remember, no one walks alone. Have you ever read the news and wondered, God, what is happening to this world? Well, you're not the first person to ask this question.

Speaker

There was a prophet named Habakkuk, and he asked it a thousand years ago, and God gave an answer that still brings hope today. Well today I want to talk about something most of us experience almost every day, and that's troubling headlines. You'll hear about violence, conflict, injustice, corruption, disasters, and certainly suffering. It can leave us asking questions like where is this world heading? Or why does evil seem to win so often? And God, are you seeing this? Well these alone can be challenges to our hope. If you've ever felt that way, you're in good company.

Speaker

Let's go back to Habakkuk. He was a prophet in the Old Testament, and he asked those very same questions. Habakkuk begins his book with a burden. Let's listen to what he says in Habakkuk chapter one verses two and three. Habakkuk says, O Lord, how long shall I cry for help and you will not hear? Or cry to you violence and you will not save. Why do you make me see iniquity and why do you idly look at wrong?

Speaker

Well friends, does that sound familiar? Habakkuk is looking around his nation, and what he sees troubled him deeply, because he saw violence and injustice and laws ignored and the righteous thrown aside. In other words, Habakkuk could have been looking at the headlines of his day. But here's something important. Habakkuk doesn't walk away from God with all this trouble and misery. He turns towards God with his question. Faith does not mean you're pretending everything is fine. Faith means bringing our concerns honestly to the Lord. In verse five of Habakkuk, God responds to him, and his answer is fascinating. God says, Look among the nations and see, you'll see wonders and be astounded, for I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told. If we updated God's words to today's language, he could be saying, Habakkuk, you think nothing is happening, but I am already at work. Or God might say, Habakkuk, you wouldn't believe it if you saw it. And that's an important reminder for us today. Just because we don't see God working does not mean he is not working.

Speaker

Behind all the chaos of today's headlines, God is still moving, and behind the troubling headlines, God's purpose continues. The news cycle shows us a moment in time, but God sees the entire story. The headlines might say violence is increasing, morality is collapsing, the world feels unstable. But the larger story of Scripture says something very different. God is still calling people to him, he still transformed hearts, he is still advancing his kingdom, and he is still preparing eternity. The news tells us what's going wrong. But the gospel, which by the way means good news, the gospel tells us what God is making right, and He's making it right for eternity. Habakkuk looked at the world and asked, God, do you see what is happening?

Speaker

Today, maybe we ask the same thing, but perhaps God is asking us a question in return. Maybe God is asking us, Do you see what I'm doing? Because even in dark times, God is still at work. He's still working in quiet places and quiet acts of kindness. He's working in people turning to Christ, in believers, sharing hope, in families, choosing faith, and in hearts learning to trust him.

Speaker

These things rarely make the evening news, but in God's kingdom they matter most. So what do we do when we see the headlines and they trouble our heart? Well Habakkuk teaches us three simple responses. First bring your concerns to God. Don't carry the burden alone. Pray earnestly and honestly. And Habakkuk tells us to trust that God is working even when we can't see it. His timing and plans are bigger than ours. And the third one is choose hope over despair. The story of God has always moved through dark chapters and moving toward redemption. Well, here's a closing thought. Remember this. Don't let the headlines of today rule your heart or challenge your hope.

Speaker

Maybe we need to turn off the headlines, not to hide from them, but to not let them rule our thoughts. As the book of Habakkuk begins, he's troubled by what he saw. But by the end of the book, he says something remarkable. Even if the fields fail and the crops disappear, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will take joy in the God of my salvation. We can do the same thing.

Speaker

The apostle Paul tells us in Philippians chapter four verses eight and nine, finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable. If there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

Speaker

Friends, thank you for walking this journey with me. Until next time, let's keep moving forward together towards hope. If this episode encouraged you, share it with someone who may need hope today and remind them no one walks alone. And remember, in all things, we give glory to God our Father.
