Today we're stepping inside the Montgomery Cancer Center in Prattville, Alabama, a place where courage meets compassion, where healing begins, and where hope is offered every single day. At the heart of so much of that hope is one unforgettable man: Dr. Robert Avery.
Dr. Avery is known for his remarkable skill and compassionate care. But he also understands something powerful, healing often comes through laughter too. Because sometimes hope arrives through wise words. Sometimes through excellent care. And sometimes… through sky blue socks covered in bright yellow rubber chickens.
Today, I want to share the story of a doctor who understood that medicine treats the body, while humor and hope help strengthen the heart.
For me, this story is personal. Dr. Avery stood beside me in my own battle with leukemia, offering truth, courage, and hope when I needed it most.
So today, we celebrate a man who brings healing, humor, and hope to countless lives.
This is the story of Dr. Robert Avery, a man of humor and hope.

Hello friends, I'm your host, Dr. Dave Leighton, and thank you for joining me on our journey to hope. This podcast is a place where together we explore how to discover, sustain, and sometimes regain hope. Wherever you're listening, let's take a deep breath, open our hearts, and continue this journey towards hope. And remember, no one walks alone.
SpeakerIn today's episode, I'm giving everyone an insight into something that is very special at the Montgomery Cancer Center in Prattville, Alabama. This is a wonderful resource for patients throughout our region. They receive remarkable care during what for many is the most challenging period of their life. And we offer healing, humor, and hope in large doses. But there's also something special about the center, and that's the subject of today's episode. It's about how one very important person is at the heart of the hope we offer.
SpeakerAt the Cancer Center, every day carries its own rhythm. Phones ring softly at reception, nurses move with practiced grace. The coffee pot in the main hallway brews faithfully like it was on a mission from above, offering life, hope, and just enough caffeine to keep everyone moving. Patients arrive carrying courage, questions, and sometimes a little understandable anxiety. And then there is doctor Robert Avery.
SpeakerDr. Avery is respected for his incredible medical skills. He's admired for his kindness and compassion, and he's quite famous for one unexpected reason. His socks. Yes, his socks. Not plain socks, not boring socks.

Dr. Avery believes that if he's going to spend his days helping people face some of life's hardest battles, his socks ought to bring a little joy on the journey. Most days his footwear featured musical notes, tiny pianos, or the occasional trumpet section marching around his ankles. His white lab coat, his polished black wingtips, and his professional calm say I am a serious doctor. But his socks say, But I also know laughter matters. Patients notice, staff notices.
unknownunknown
Well one Monday morning, however, doctor Avery arrived unusually quiet. He greeted the nurses, he checked charts, he stopped by the coffee pot in the main hallway, poured himself a fresh cup, and then made his way down the corridor, white lab coat flowing behind him like a superhero cape in a gentle breeze of the ventilation system. But something felt uh different.
unknownBarbara Bartley, the clinical manager, ever on the lookout, narrowed her eyes. You're awfully calm today, doctor.
unknownDr. Avery simply smiled over the rim of his coffee cup. Some things he said are worth waiting for. Well that was pretty cryptic. Well by mid morning, the mystery ended. During a consultation, doctor Avery sat down, crossed one leg over the other, and revealed what would forever become cancer center history. Sky blue socks covered in bright yellow rubber chickens. An entire flock of rubber chickens stretched from ankle to calf like they were migrating south for the winter. The patient blinked, looked again, and burst out laughing so hard even the tension in the room seemed to pack up and leave.
unknownDr. Avery, are those rubber chickens? doctor Avery adjusted his stethoscope with perfect professionalism.
unknownYes, he replied. They're my emergency optimism socks. Emergency optimism? Absolutely, he replied, smiling. Side effects may include smiling, reduced stress, and occasional spontaneous clucking.
unknownWell, news traveled fast throughout the cancer center, faster than the smell of fresh coffee from the hallway pot and chocolate chip cookies in the staff break room. By lunchtime, staff members were making excuses to walk past his office. Everyone just wanted to see the socks.
unknownIn the break room, someone taped a handwritten sign near the refrigerator. Warning, Dr. Avery's socks have caused unexpected laughter. Proceed with caution. Even patients began asking, Is today the chicken sock day? And somehow, on a day that could have felt heavy, the halls felt lighter.
unknownOne gentleman receiving treatment looked down, chuckled, and said, Doc, if you can wear rubber chickens, I guess I can handle another round of chemo. Dr. Avery smiled warmly. That's exactly why they're on duty.
unknownFrom then on, the legendary rubber chicken socks became part of the cancer center folklore. People still appreciate doctor Avery's expertise. They still trust his wisdom. But they also know something else. He understands that healing isn't only about medicine.
unknownSometimes it's about easing fear. Sometimes it's about finding a reason to laugh. And sometimes it's about sky blue socks covered with yellow rubber chickens beneath a flowing white lab coat, a fresh cup of hallway coffee, and a perfectly respectable pair of black wingtips. Because at that cancer center, Dr. Avery knew an important truth. Serious work and joyful hearts can walk side by side, even if one of them was wearing rubber chickens.
unknownJust a small serious point. Dr. Avery was my doctor when I went through leukemia, and I am still under his care for follow-up screenings. I will never forget him telling me at the beginning of my journey through cancer, you have only three weeks to live, but we've got this.
unknownEvery day, Dr. Avery administers challenging news, the foundation of hope, and the healing of humor. Thank you, Dr. Avery.
unknownFriends, thank you for walking this journey with me. Until next time, let's keep moving forward together towards hope. If this episode encouraged you, share it with someone who may need hope today and remind them no one walks alone. And remember, in all things, we give glory to God our Father.
