of the Bible to point out that Jesus was coming, if he worked all that hard to do all of that to make it all happen, then it must have an impact in our lives. 00:01:56.640 --> 00:02:00.959 It must Psalm chapter 1 this morning. 00:02:41.120 --> 00:02:54.400 And I want to unpack this Psalm a little bit, but I want to put it in that context of you beginning the process of establishing a spiritual you. 00:04:55.360 --> 00:05:04.319 But sometimes what happens is the more familiar we get with something, the more we lose the incredible beauty and richness of it. 00:05:04.480 --> 00:05:07.199 So I want to unpack this psalm with you this morning. 00:05:07.519 --> 00:05:22.480 Psalm chapter 1 begins this way How happy is the one who does not walk in the advice of the wicked, or stand in the pathway with sinners, or sit in the company of mockers. 00:05:23.040 --> 00:05:29.600 Instead, his is the happy, the man who does this. 00:05:30.319 --> 00:05:36.959 His delight is in the Lord's instruction, and he meditates on it day and night. 00:05:37.279 --> 00:05:48.240 He is like a tree planted beside flowing streams that bears its fruit in season, and whose leaf does not wither. 00:05:48.959 --> 00:05:52.079 Whatever he does prospers. 00:05:53.120 --> 00:05:55.839 The wicked are not like this. 00:05:56.319 --> 00:06:00.720 Instead, they are like chaff that the wind blows away. 00:06:01.040 --> 00:06:07.199 Therefore the wicked will not stand up in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteousness. 00:06:07.439 --> 00:06:15.439 For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of wicked leads to ruin. 00:06:18.879 --> 00:06:29.360 Vision, a spiritual vision, an expectation that's driven by imagination and faith and impact. 00:06:29.680 00:06:47.680 Now, the point of this song, now you know the word psalm means song. 00:06:47.920 --> 00:07:00.160 And the point of this song is this: this incredible picture of what God does in the life of someone who follows him, painted in the image of this tree. 00:07:00.399 --> 00:07:03.680 That's the central part of this song. 00:07:03.759 --> 00:07:05.040 It's the point of it. 00:07:05.279 --> 00:07:13.759 God is trying to give us this picture of the fact that it means something that you're a follower of him. 00:07:14.560 --> 00:07:23.920 That he works in your life and he has this purposefulness and he has a point and he has an impact that is incredible in our lives. 00:07:24.079 --> 00:07:29.040 And so the linchpin of understanding this psalm is driven in this incredible picture. 00:07:29.279 --> 00:07:33.279 Now, this song is this song is so powerful. 00:07:33.519 --> 00:07:38.800 This entire, just these six verses right here, it is so rich and it is so filled. casts a vision for us that we need to latch on to and have a desire for in our lives as well. 00:07:55.600 --> 00:07:57.839 Listen, here's the way it begins. 00:07:58.480 --> 00:08:00.399 Look how this song begins in verse 1. 00:08:00.560 --> 00:08:03.360 How happy, how happy is the one. 00:08:03.519 --> 00:08:08.959 And that word happy there actually is a much more expansive word in the original language. 00:08:09.120 --> 00:08:15.199 It is, it could be translated blessedness, or actually it's in a plural form. 00:08:15.360 --> 00:08:18.480 So it's blessings and blessednesses. 00:08:18.959 --> 00:08:40.559 If you think about when Jesus spoke in Matthew chapter 5 in the Sermon on the Mount, and he began with the Beatitudes, we've done a series of those throughout 2023 on our Triangle Podcast, and he talks about the blessed condition, the happiness, the joy, the fullness of life that comes when those characters are ours. 00:08:40.799 --> 00:08:42.399 And so he begins this psalm. 00:08:42.639 --> 00:08:49.200 The very first image is this plural sense of abundant life and blessings. 00:08:49.519 --> 00:08:56.480 The last verse in this song says, For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous. 00:08:56.720 --> 00:09:04.559 You see, it is at the beginning and the end, this work of God moving in our lives. 00:09:04.799 --> 00:09:08.879 He has blessings for you that are plural and beyond description. 00:09:09.039 --> 00:09:18.159 And he watches over our way as we move in the direction with him of being a part of what he's doing in our lives. 00:09:18.399 --> 00:09:23.440 And in that frame, he now paints this incredible picture. 00:09:23.679 --> 00:09:25.919 He is like a tree planted. 00:09:26.159 --> 00:09:29.759 Now, that original language there is really beautiful. 00:09:29.919 --> 00:09:34.000 You get a sense of it in the English, but it's even more in the other. 00:09:34.399 --> 00:09:38.399 You get a sense, this is a tree that's not just growing there in the wild. 00:09:38.480 --> 00:09:41.279 It is a tree that has been planted there. 00:09:41.519 --> 00:09:49.519 And it's clear in the original language, this means it was intentionally planted like someone who is a farmer planting an orchard. 00:09:49.679 --> 00:10:05.600 Or it even could be with the connotation of transplanted, that it was changed, it was found over here, and it was put here on purpose by this stream where it can draw all of these resources and flourish. 00:10:06.080 --> 00:10:18.799 This is a picture of God taking a person who follows Him and having a vision for their lives that He has created and that He is working to accomplish in them. 00:10:19.360 --> 00:10:21.039 He chose this tree. 00:10:30.639 --> 00:10:37.120 So that it can do what He purposed for it to do when He planted it there. 00:10:38.080 --> 00:10:40.159 Now that's pretty incredible. 00:10:41.200 --> 00:10:46.320 I can't even wrap my mind around how powerful that message is. 00:10:46.639 --> 00:10:52.879 That's who you are when you are a follower of Jesus. 00:10:53.279 --> 00:11:08.080 That God is saying, I have chosen you and planted you, and I have planted you for a purpose and in a place, and I'm going to resource you, and I'm going to use you, and I want you to flourish. 00:11:08.320 --> 00:11:10.639 And that's why I've put you there. 00:11:11.279 --> 00:11:14.080 Man, it's just an incredible picture. 00:11:14.559 --> 00:11:35.679 And so, in our identity as a follower of Christ, we need to understand that we are created by God in his image, saved for his purpose, that he has a plan for you, and that he wants something dynamic to happen spiritually in your life. 00:11:35.919 --> 00:11:37.840 Now look at what he says again. 00:11:38.399 --> 00:11:46.000 You're like a tree planted beside the flowing streams that bears its fruit in its season. 00:11:48.320 --> 00:11:58.639 Bearing spiritual fruit is inherent in the identity of every follower of Christ. 00:12:00.240 --> 00:12:11.039 There is no such thing as a Christian who is simply a nice looking bush that you get nothing out of. 00:12:39.279 --> 00:12:39.919 Right? 00:12:40.559 --> 00:12:44.639 There's no such picture of that in Scripture for Christians. 00:12:45.120 --> 00:12:56.639 Every time God uses an agricultural example in Scripture, he uses a fruit-bearing tree or plant or vine. 00:12:56.960 --> 00:13:04.559 For example, Jesus, in teaching his disciples and his followers in John chapter 15, he says this. 00:13:09.039 --> 00:13:22.639 You're a vine, and when you as a vine are attached to the branches, who is Jesus, that's where the life source flows into that vine, then you're going to bear fruit. 00:13:22.879 --> 00:13:28.879 And if you don't bear fruit, we're going to cut you off as useless. 00:13:29.519 --> 00:13:40.879 But if you do bear fruit, which is your identity as a grapevine, then we're going to prune you and work on you so that you bear more fruit. 00:13:41.600 --> 00:13:52.080 Because your purpose in being as a believer and follower of Christ is the work that he has designed and planned to do through you in your life. 00:13:52.320 uses an agricultural example in the New Testament, and it is about a fig tree. 00:14:19.120 --> 00:14:22.080 Now, personally, we love fig trees in my family. 00:14:22.240 --> 00:14:24.399 I mean, we deeply love fig trees. 00:14:25.120 --> 00:14:27.600 But they create kind of a conflict in our world. 00:14:27.919 --> 00:14:37.919 My wife eats the figs just right off the tree, which is really a problem because God designed figs to make fig preserves. 00:14:40.559 --> 00:14:47.279 And since I'm spiritual and the pastor, I understand this truth, but my wife gets confused with that. 00:14:47.440 --> 00:14:53.919 And she'll eat all the figs before we have a chance to actually preserve them into fig preserves. 00:14:56.240 --> 00:15:00.480 God loves us and made figs just for us to make fig preserves. 00:15:01.279 --> 00:15:05.200 And Jesus understood the power of that, so he used an illustration of a fig tree. 00:15:05.279 --> 00:15:14.480 And he said, A guy owned a vineyard, and he had a fig tree in there, and all the other fig trees were producing fruit, but this fig tree didn't produce fruit. 00:15:14.799 --> 00:15:19.840 And so the guy that owned the vineyard comes to the gardener and he says, Listen, cut that thing down. 00:15:19.919 --> 00:15:21.360 It's wasting my time. 00:15:21.519 --> 00:15:25.039 It's taking up space, it's using resources without value. 00:15:41.679 --> 00:15:44.320 And let's see if we can't get it to do what it's supposed to do. 00:15:44.480 --> 00:15:48.639 Because it is a fig tree and it's supposed to bear fruits, and it can if we work with it. 00:15:48.960 --> 00:15:59.519 And it was a spiritual parable where God is the owner of the vineyard and he expects the plants to bear fruit the reason that he planted them. 00:15:59.840 --> 00:16:03.919 We're the trees, and the question is, are we bearing fruit or not? 00:16:04.080 --> 00:16:13.600 And Jesus is the gardener, and it's his work around the tree, impacting the tree, and working in the tree that equips the tree to help it do what it was supposed to do. 00:16:14.080 --> 00:16:17.679 The Bible tells us in Ephesians chapter 2, and it talks about salvation. 00:16:17.919 00:16:36.559 And then it says this, because we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works that he has prepared beforehand for us to walk in. 00:16:37.200 --> 00:16:47.120 Our identity as a believer is to impact the people and the world around us by bearing spiritual fruit. 00:16:47.840 --> 00:17:07.680 Your identity as a believer, if you're a follower of Christ, what that means is you were chosen and you were planted, and he loves you, and he created you to flourish, and he gave you the identity of bearing fruit, and he's put everything in your life that would allow you to bear that fruit, and he has a plan for the fruit that you will bear. 00:17:09.279 --> 00:17:16.480 A spiritual vision is inherent in our spiritual identity. 00:17:17.359 --> 00:17:25.359 That fruit has got to have involved in it the salvation of others and the advance of the gospel. 00:17:26.319 --> 00:17:38.079 There is no definition of bearing fruit that does not include us leading people to faith in Jesus Christ. 00:17:40.240 --> 00:17:44.960 And that gets lost so often in life. 00:17:45.359 --> 00:17:51.839 Our purpose in being is to be a part of the advance of the gospel and to see people saved. 00:17:52.160 --> 00:18:07.759 As we are working and cranking up towards these mission partnerships, it is so vital that we understand we must see the vision that God has for us and the responsibility that He has for us as a church to advance the gospel. 00:18:09.200 --> 00:18:17.200 The opportunity that we have to help that fledgling church in El Salvador. 00:18:18.640 --> 00:18:30.640 Really, the incredible opportunity that we have to join with brothers and sisters in Christ in a place like London, England, where the gospel is desperately needed. 00:18:32.000 --> 00:18:54.319 A vibrant baptizing church with a history of evangelism and a history of prayer, we can go step into that opportunity and help build that network of evangelistic pastors to bring the happening is we are a part of a platform that God planted here well over a hundred years ago, many generations ago, because he knew that the river valley was going to grow and be a city and be an influential city in this region and in our state, and there needed to be a lighthouse here to point the way to Jesus, and that's why we're here. 00:20:10.240 --> 00:20:11.759 That's why we're here. 00:20:12.400 --> 00:20:24.240 And so in January, we're going to we're going to study prayer, and then we're going to have daily prayers that we're going to pre we're going to pray together, and we are
