00:03:15.680 Matter of fact, when there seems to be something supernatural that takes place, we uh we kind of look around and analyze it ourselves sometimes to see it, well, couldn't we explain it challenge you to look into the Word of God with me and see a time and an hour when there was a need, a great need for a new day, and how a man brought a new day. 00:07:14.000 --> 00:07:15.439 Now let me say this to you. 00:07:15.600 --> 00:07:28.639 I don't believe that any one man can bring the new day to First Baptist Church, Fort Smith, but I believe all together we need to be those who unite our hearts and lives together to bring a new day. 00:07:28.959 --> 00:07:43.680 Surging forward, moving forward, impacting this community, and doing our work for Jesus Christ in the hours and the days and the weeks and the months, and yea, if God gives it to us the years that we have together in the future. 00:07:43.920 --> 00:07:48.079 We don't have a time, I believe, in our day for a lot of analysis. 00:07:48.240 --> 00:07:59.600 I believe it's the time to move and for men to be those and for women to be those, and for young people to be those who are ready to take a step of faith into a new day. 00:07:59.920 --> 00:08:03.519 Let's begin reading in this 17th chapter of 1 Samuel. 00:08:03.600 --> 00:08:10.639 It's a familiar passage, though you may not have studied this in a long time, but though all of you know this story very well. 00:08:10.879 --> 00:08:16.959 Begin reading with me in verse 2 of chapter 17 of 1 Samuel. 00:08:17.199 --> 00:08:26.959 And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and they pitched their camp by the valley of Elah and set the battle in array against the Philistines. 00:08:27.279 --> 00:08:36.639 And the Philistines stood on one side on a mountain, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side, and there was a valley in between. 00:08:36.879 --> 00:08:40.159 I want you to see the picture in your mind today, if you would, all right? 00:08:40.320 --> 00:08:43.279 And the floor of the auditorium is going to be our valley today. 00:08:43.440 --> 00:08:49.120 And over here on this hillside is encamped Israel, and Saul is the king of Israel. 00:08:49.279 --> 00:09:00.000 He has been a failure to this point because of his pride and his arrogance, but he's still king of Israel, and the armies of Israel here, and over here are the old enemies. 00:09:00.240 --> 00:09:02.320 Always the old enemies of Israel. 00:09:02.480 --> 00:09:10.000 If I were to ask you to name the name of one of Israel's enemies, almost the majority, I'm sure I should say, would say, why? 00:09:10.159 --> 00:09:11.120 The Philistines. 00:09:11.279 --> 00:09:16.320 Certainly we always remember the old Philistines as the enemy of Israel. 00:09:16.480 --> 00:09:18.799 They've set their battle in array. 00:09:19.039 --> 00:09:21.840 They're getting ready to come into a confrontation. 00:09:22.080 --> 00:09:24.320 You know what's interesting to me when I look at this? 00:09:24.480 --> 00:09:32.399 If you were to study the history of Israel and look at Israel's history, they have been delivered from the bondage and the slavery of Egypt. 00:09:32.559 --> 00:09:38.879 They have arrived after 40 years of the wilderness to become a people in the land that God promised them. 00:09:39.039 --> 00:09:44.720 But though they've reached the promised land, the battles are still there to be fought. 00:09:44.879 --> 00:09:46.159 Now, folks, listen. 00:09:46.480 --> 00:09:53.279 You may have been delivered by the Lord Jesus from your sin, from the slave of your sin, from the slave master of the devil. 00:09:53.440 --> 00:10:00.000 But folks, listen, because we come to Christ, that does not mean the problems and the difficulties and the battles are over. 00:10:00.159 --> 00:10:01.840 The battles have just begun. 00:10:02.000 --> 00:10:07.279 And the Christian life is a spiritual warfare and it's an encounter with the enemy. 00:10:07.440 --> 00:10:18.879 You have an enemy that hates you, that opposes you, who is against you, and what you and I must do is trust God and realize that it's up to us to fight the battles before us. 00:10:19.120 --> 00:10:20.879 Well, the battle is in array. 00:10:21.039 --> 00:10:23.120 I like that word in the King James. 00:10:23.279 --> 00:10:24.879 They've set the battle in array. 00:10:25.039 --> 00:10:33.840 What that means, we're not exactly certain, but what I think it means is that over here on Israel's side, they've probably pitched their tents in a military order. 00:10:34.000 --> 00:10:40.879 They've probably aligned their shields and their weaponry along the edge of that ridge of that hill to impress the enemy. 00:10:41.120 --> 00:10:54.559 And I'm sure over on here, this side, where the Philistines are at, they've set their battle in array, and they've probably lined that hillside with all of their equipment and their men, and they're peering down at one another from the hills, ready to do battle. 00:10:54.879 --> 00:10:58.799 Now I know in this day we think of nuclear warfare. 00:10:59.120 --> 00:11:14.000 We go back to those pictures of desert storm and those screaming jets and the fear and the night that many must have experienced, and the tanks and the artillery, and those uh mechanized, computerized rockets and the Patriot missile. 00:11:14.159 --> 00:11:16.879 But in those days battle was very simple. 00:11:17.200 --> 00:11:23.360 Someone screamed to scream, called an order, blew a whistle, blew a trumpet or something. 00:11:23.600 --> 00:11:39.600 And this army on this hillside, Israel, and this army on this side, the Philistines, would rush down into the middle of that valley, and there they would come in a tremendous crash and confrontation of coal steel and hand-to-hand combat. 00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:54.399 It had to be, listen, it had to be a fearful thing to think of running into a battle of bows and arrows and spears and swords and daggers and knives and realize that you may meet your death in that fashion. 00:11:54.879 --> 00:12:03.759 Now, I don't believe these fellows were on this hillside on each side over here, just uh, you know, just sort of casually waiting for the battle to start. 00:12:04.000 --> 00:12:13.039 I I've had in my mind what would it be like, and the only picture that I have in my mind, have you ever seen when uh a football team that's really fired up comes running out on the field? 00:12:13.360 --> 00:12:17.360 First thing they do to test their strength is they run through a big piece of paper. 00:12:18.559 --> 00:12:25.279 And they run through that big piece of paper and they rush out on the field and they get to the sideline and then they begin to pile up on each other. 00:12:25.440 --> 00:12:26.879 Have you ever seen them do that? 00:12:27.120 --> 00:12:31.919 Boy, I've always thought I certainly wouldn't want to be that first guy, you know, that formed that pile. 00:12:32.159 --> 00:12:42.720 And they pile up about 40 or 50 or 60 of them, a college football team, maybe 70 of them, in a big pile, and they break up, and the kickoff's getting ready to happen. 00:12:42.960 --> 00:12:56.320 And two guys stand over there and grab each other by the shoulder pads and they bang their heads together, and then they bang their shoulders together, and then they bang their forearms together, and they scream and they grunt and they holler. 00:12:56.480 --> 00:12:57.279 What's the deal here? 00:12:57.360 --> 00:12:58.399 What's happening? 00:12:58.799 --> do you think was happening on these hillsides when these men were getting ready for that battle? 00:13:12.320 --> 00:13:14.320 Do you think they were standing there twiddling their thumbs? 00:13:14.480 --> 00:13:17.519 No, they were preparing for a great encounter. 00:13:17.919 --> 00:13:25.039 And while they're there, waiting for that great encounter, they are confident, I'm sure, in ready. 00:13:37.039 --> 00:13:45.200 I, you know, I've been working out, I'm in good shape, I've got my weapons sharpened, and I don't think there's a Philistine in that country over there that can stay with me today. 00:13:45.360 --> 00:13:46.559 I'm ready. 00:13:46.960 --> 00:13:55.919 And in all of that readiness, the Bible says that the Philistines pull a uh a different tactic and strategy. height was six cubics and a span. 00:14:07.840 --> 00:14:09.919 That's about nine feet nine. 00:14:10.240 --> 00:14:13.039 He could make a lot of money in the NBA today. 00:14:13.519 --> 00:14:18.080 If he could keep from breaking his face on the rim, he'd do great. 00:14:18.399 --> 00:14:24.639 Nolan Ryan, excuse me, Nolan Richardson would be right after him to recruit him if he were around today. 00:14:25.120 --> 00:14:33.039 And he had a helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail, and the weight of the coat was 5,000 shekels of brass. 00:14:33.120 --> 00:14:34.080 You know what that means? 00:14:34.320 --> 00:14:36.000 He's got a coat of mail on. 00:14:36.159 --> 00:14:41.440 That means a metal jacket that weighs 106 pounds in metal. 00:14:41.759 him. 00:14:59.679 --> 00:15:00.879 In verse 6. 00:15:01.200 --> 00:15:07.039 And he had greaves of brass on his legs and a target of brass between his shoulders. 00:15:07.279 --> 00:15:11.840 What that means is, is down here, he had uh brass shin guards. 00:15:12.399 --> 00:15:18.720 When you're nine foot nine or or nine foot nine inches tall, you get a lot of folks at your shins, too. 00:15:19.679 --> 00:15:22.080 And he's got a he's got a shield on his back. 00:15:22.159 --> 00:15:29.759 I can imagine a round shield with two loops in it, and he probably just sticks it on like a coat, and it's like a big round shield hung on his back. 00:15:30.399 --> 00:15:34.559 When you're nine foot nine, you get a lot of back shooters, too. 00:15:36.080 --> 00:15:38.799 And so Goliath walks out on the field. 00:15:39.120 --> 00:15:45.200 Verse 7 says he has a staff of his spear is like a weaver's beam. 00:15:45.279 --> 00:15:51.759 That's probably over 10 feet long, and his spear's head weighed 600 shekels of iron. 00:15:51.919 --> 00:15:57.360 That means the metal point on his spear weighed 20 pounds. 00:15:58.720 --> 00:16:06.000 That's about four or five pounds more than the weight of a shot put that they'll be throwing in the Summer Olympics this year. 00:16:06.480 --> 00:16:14.639 And that's just the cold, sharp steel edge of a 10 or 12 foot long spear that he might what you believe and what you stand for, what I believe and what I stand for, what this church believes and what this church stands for, the enemies of the faith are just as real and challenging
