congregation. 00:00:56.240 --> 00:01:13.359 Turn with me in your Bibles to Matthew chapter 28, and we're going to finish our little three-week study here today on the core values that we are trying to build into our church life to complete the mission that Jesus gave us in the Great Commission. 00:01:14.079 --> 00:01:27.120 We refer to that, the Great Commission, as a sort of a church term, an idiom that's been used through the years to explain how we go about what Jesus commanded us to do as his followers. 00:01:27.359 --> 00:01:31.840 And so the question is not what it is, but how to do it. 00:01:31.920 --> 00:01:43.680 And so these three core values we've studied over the last three weeks, and they really encourage us, they help us understand why and how we're doing what we're just experienced that just a moment ago, to hear the voices of God in unison singing about the person of God and ushering us into his presence as our teacher, as our Savior, and as our Lord. what we are, it's not what we do. 00:02:46.560 --> 00:02:57.840 We are the body of Christ fulfilling the commission of Jesus to help people to enter into a relationship with him so that he can marriage, being involved in the church and other believers investing in them, and now them giving that back into the lives of others and wanting to invest so that they can grow and walk with Jesus. 00:03:19.360 --> 00:03:24.080 That's an incredible picture of what we're going to talk about today in transformation. 00:03:24.319 --> 00:03:29.840 I want you to uh, if you have not turned in your Bibles with me to Matthew chapter 8, go ahead and do that. 00:03:30.000 --> 00:03:35.520 And on the screen we have uh that part that's called the Great Commission. 00:03:35.759 --> 00:03:40.560 But I want to back up just a little bit and get a running core into this moment. 00:03:40.719 --> 00:03:46.240 So you have there verse 18, but I want you, if you have your scripture, to start with me in verse 16. 00:03:46.800 --> 00:03:51.360 And let's see this moment here and get a context of this moment. 00:03:52.000 --> 00:04:00.879 Uh in verse 16 of Matthew 28, the Bible says, the eleven disciples traveled to Galilee to the mountain where Jesus had directed them. 00:04:01.039 --> 00:04:04.879 Now, earlier in the chapter, we saw the resurrection of Jesus. 00:04:05.120 --> 00:04:07.280 And so he was resurrected from the dead. 00:04:07.439 --> 00:04:15.840 He met with Mary and those ladies who went to the tomb, and he instructed them, go back and tell them to meet me at this mountain. 00:04:16.079 --> 00:04:24.800 Now, in all of the gospels, if you put them together, there are a number of events that happen between that moment of resurrection and when they come to this mountain. 00:04:24.959 --> 00:04:25.839 But here they are. 00:04:26.000 --> 00:04:31.120 They were directed to meet Jesus here because he has something very important he wants to do with them. 00:04:31.360 --> 00:04:36.160 Verse 17, when they saw him, they worshiped. 00:04:37.680 --> 00:04:39.920 Now you think for a minute. 00:04:40.800 --> 00:04:45.439 They saw Jesus nailed to a cross. 00:04:46.000 --> 00:05:04.000 They saw Jesus beaten, bloodied, and they saw him hung on a cross, and they were standing there, at least in close enough proximity, that they could hear Jesus cry out, It is finished. 00:05:06.399 --> 00:05:08.879 And then he died there on the cross. 00:05:09.680 --> 00:05:14.800 They understood when he was buried in that tomb. 00:05:15.279 --> 00:05:20.079 And now they are looking at Jesus alive having conquered death and sin. 00:05:20.800 --> 00:05:27.680 The response that we should have to a risen Savior is always to worship him. 00:05:28.319 --> 00:05:30.720 He is the King of kings and the Lord of Lords. 00:05:30.879 --> 00:05:34.079 The Bible says he is the author and finisher of our faith. 00:05:34.319 --> 00:05:37.680 He is the one who accomplished what no one else could. 00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:41.120 He died on the cross to pay the price for our sins. 00:05:41.279 --> 00:05:58.000 And he, in a way that no one else ever could, he is the only one as the author of life, as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, as the creator of life, he walked out of that tomb, conquering death and sin in victory to offer us salvation. 00:05:58.319 --> 00:06:01.920 That is the Jesus that they are standing before. 00:06:02.240 --> 00:06:10.480 And they are worshiping him in his resurrected person, in his victory as our Savior. 00:06:11.199 --> 00:06:20.639 Now that nothing should encourage our faith and strengthen our faith any more than the fact that we serve a risen Savior. 00:06:22.399 --> 00:06:26.399 But it also says, but some doubt it. 00:06:27.040 --> 00:06:30.399 Now the question in my mind is, what is there to doubt? 00:06:31.279 --> 00:06:35.279 I mean, Jesus walked out of the tomb and he's standing there alive in front of you. 00:06:35.360 --> 00:06:36.879 What are you gonna doubt? 00:06:38.079 --> 00:06:40.800 Most likely what they're doubting is the future. 00:06:41.279 --> 00:06:42.879 What's going to happen? 00:06:43.199 --> 00:06:44.879 How is this going to work? 00:06:45.839 --> 00:06:53.439 We had a vision for what Jesus was going to do, and he didn't do what we thought he was going to do, and then we saw him die, and then he rose again. 00:06:53.680 --> 00:06:55.600 Yeah, he's risen again, but he could die again. 00:06:55.680 --> 00:06:58.959 He died once, and what's going to happen to us, and how's this future gonna go? 00:06:59.120 --> 00:07:04.160 And all these Roman soldiers are lying, saying we took his body and hid it, and all this kind of what's happening. 00:07:04.399 --> 00:07:10.959 And their eyes are not on the person of Jesus, they're on something else. 00:07:12.319 --> 00:07:20.240 And when we take our eyes off the resurrected Savior, it tends to allow those other thoughts and doubts to creep in. 00:07:20.560 --> 00:07:27.839 In that context, Jesus came near them and he said to them, All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. 00:07:28.160 --> 00:07:44.160 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you, and remember, I am with you always to the end of the age. 00:07:44.399 --> 00:07:57.759 And we see there in this encapsulated vision statement for us as a church, the instruction of what to do, the vision of what this is going to look like in the future. 00:07:58.079 --> 00:08:02.240 But also we have the how-to of how this is going to work. 00:08:02.399 --> 00:08:08.639 And so he is given a nutshell version that's going to be unpacked through the rest of their ministry. 00:08:08.800 --> 00:08:18.639 It captures the principles that he taught them all those three years that he was walking with them, leading up to that moment of the cross and the resurrection and accomplishing salvation. 00:08:18.800 --> 00:08:21.600 And so he encapsulates it all in this moment. 00:08:21.759 --> 00:08:31.759 And so it is the most beautiful place for us to understand how we go about this Great Commission and what this great commission is. 00:08:32.000 --> 00:08:34.000 That's where we get evangelism. supposed to take it into the lives of each and every person who's not accepted Christ as their Savior and give them that good news of the gospel so they can be saved. 00:09:00.799 --> 00:09:02.240 The 00:10:01.039 Jesus didn't come for us to act better, do better, be better. 00:10:01.279 --> 00:10:13.600 Jesus came to take us from who we were as sinners and to literally transform us in every way, rest of our lives here on this earth transforming us into his image, creating in us the person who would be described as a disciple. 00:10:30.000 --> 00:10:37.519 And then he ultimately takes us home to heaven and transforms us finally and eternally to live with him there. 00:10:37.840 --> 00:10:42.399 Jesus came to transform us into someone else. 00:10:42.639 --> 00:10:46.720 So I'm going to use the actor, he is the power, he is all of that. 00:11:19.200 --> 00:11:24.720 This is all about being transformed in the image of Jesus, and that only comes through the work of Jesus. 00:11:24.960 --> Jesus. 00:11:46.639 --> 00:11:51.039 Listen, people don't come and get saved just because we open the doors. 00:11:51.679 --> 00:11:59.840 It is the activity and the power of Jesus who works to save powerful and profitable in our lives. 00:12:47.200 --> 00:12:58.000 It is the precepts of Scripture and the principles that Jesus taught and embodied and that He encourages and commands in our lives 00:13:08.240 Listen, we're not here making up stuff or figuring out whatever. 00:13:08.320 --> 00:13:12.639 It's all here in Scripture and we are following what He teaches. 00:13:13.120 --> about who Jesus is and what he's done in us and how his mercies are new every day, and how he is faithful to us, and it is all him, and we are surrendering ourselves to him so that he can work. 00:14:39.919 --> 00:14:41.679 All throughout Scripture we're taught that. 00:14:41.840 --> 00:14:52.720 Galatians chapter 2, verse 20, he says, I have been crucified with Christ, and it's no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me, and the life that I now live in this flesh. 00:14:52.879 --> 00:14:55.759 I live through the Son of Jesus Christ. 00:14:56.000 --> 00:15:04.000 In Titus 3, 5, the Bible says, Not by works of righteousness, which we have done, but according to his mercy, he has saved us. 00:15:04.159 --> 00:15:08.639 By the washing of regeneration, by the cleansing of salvation is what that means. 00:15:08.799 --> 00:15:12.639 By the washing of regeneration and the renewing of the Holy Ghost. 00:15:12.879 --> 00:15:21.840 Romans chapter 12, verse 1 and 2 says, I urge you, brothers, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice to the Lord, which is your reasonable service. 00:15:22.000 --> 00:15:27.360 And don't be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the don't know if the promises that this church talks about, if you don't know that those are real, if those are going to work in your life, listen, it's not promises that come from us. 00:16:49.279 --> conquered death and sin who comes into your life and does that work. 00:17:13.200 --> 00:17:26.000 When you learn the precepts of Scripture and the Holy Spirit works that in your life, man, it changes you eternally because it's Jesus that is doing that work. 00:17:27.200 --> 00:17:37.200 If you're lonely, if you have questions, if you're doubting, if you're struggling, whatever your question is, so that we can be obedient to the command that he's given us. 00:18:55.279 --> 00:19:06.240 And so Jesus' transformation involves a clear process that can and must be followed in obedience to this who's learned from a teacher who has inculcated their belief system and their behaviors and philosophy and structure of life, and they now are not only living it, but they are promulgating that same folks here served in the Marine Corps. 00:20:07.920 --> 00:20:09.680 How many of you were in the Marine Corps? 00:20:10.160 --> 00:20:10.880 Raise your hand. 00:20:11.119 --> 00:20:13.519 Marines are proud to raise their hands. 00:20:14.000 --> 00:20:16.079 Marines are disciples, amen? 00:20:16.480 --> 00:20:18.559 You guys can nod with me there, right? 00:20:18.720 --> 00:20:20.799 Once you're a Marine, you're always a Marine. 00:20:20.960 --> 00:20:23.200 And they make you a Marine, don't they? 00:20:23.359 --> 00:20:26.240 And you follow what the Marine Corps is. 00:20:26.480 --> 00:20:41.119 And so what happens is a guy or lady who's been transformed by the Marine Corps becomes your drill sergeant and your boot camp leader and all that kind of stuff, and they build you up in the Marine Corps, and then you go out and you serve as a Marine. 00:20:43.119 --> 00:21:02.880 And then someone from that unit is going to become the next trainer who takes the history of the Marine Corps, the ethos of the Marine Corps, the vision of the Marine Corps, the belief system of the Marine Corps, the how-to of the Marine Corps, and they build the next generation of Marines. 00:21:03.759 --> 00:21:05.599 That's what discipleship is. 00:21:05.759 --> 00:21:09.039 That's what being a disciple is. 00:21:09.599 --> 00:21:13.599 And so he gives us that command to make and to make what?
