00:01:25.359 So as we go through this book study together, as we talked about last week, one of the things that we're doing is learning how to study Scripture in context and study through a book at the theme that we'll be uh taking through the book, and that is a life worthy of the gospel. 00:01:41.200 --> 00:01:46.239 And of course, that comes from uh right directly from the scripture. 00:01:46.400 --> 00:01:50.560 It is verse 27 here in chapter 1. 00:01:50.799 --> 00:02:00.719 And so uh I want to ask this question that we asked last week as we begin this third this theory, this theme of walking through this book. 00:02:01.040 --> 00:02:05.760 Paul says in verse 27, just one thing. 00:02:06.719 --> 00:02:13.120 Now, if my dad stopped me and he said, Son, I'm only gonna tell you one thing. 00:02:13.439 --> 00:02:15.680 Okay, that means pay attention, son, right? 00:02:15.840 --> 00:02:20.080 That means I better remember that or I'm in trouble afterwards if I'm not paying attention to it. 00:02:20.240 --> 00:02:22.639 And so here's what Paul says, just one thing. 00:02:22.719 --> 00:02:24.240 And then he gives that command. 00:02:24.400 --> 00:02:27.840 Live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. 00:02:28.080 --> 00:02:32.639 That is an incredibly powerful and significant statement, obviously. 00:02:32.879 --> 00:02:41.840 He says, this is the thing that I'm going to talk to you about, church at Philippi, and down through the, by projection, down through the years to churches just like ours. 00:02:42.000 --> 00:02:45.280 What does that command mean for us in real life? 00:02:45.439 --> 00:02:46.400 What does that mean? 00:02:46.639 --> 00:02:48.240 I mean, he's telling us live. 00:02:48.400 --> 00:02:49.919 That means we got to live that out. 00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:57.520 That means Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday night, whatever it is, it's got to look like a life worthy of the gospel. 00:02:57.680 --> 00:03:00.800 How do we live out that command in real life? 00:03:01.039 --> 00:03:04.159 Well, we're going to begin to unpack that a little bit this morning. 00:03:04.400 --> 00:03:16.479 If you will, look with me there in verse 27, and we're going to walk through the last few verses at the end of this chapter so that we can see this command, and it's just exactly how he explains it. 00:03:16.719 --> 00:03:24.400 He says in verse 27, just one thing, live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. 00:03:24.800 --> 00:03:52.800 Then, assuming we're obedient that command, then, because we're doing that, then Paul, who is writing from prison, says, Whether I'm able to come and see you, or whether I'm absent, I will hear about you, church, that you are standing firm in one spirit with one mind, working side by side for the faith that comes from the gospel. 00:03:53.039 --> 00:03:54.639 That working side by side. 00:03:54.719 --> 00:04:00.400 There's another version that says, contending, which I love that we'll talk about that in a minute. 00:04:00.719 --> 00:04:09.199 Contending side by side for the faith that comes from the gospel, not being frightened in any way by your opponents. 00:04:09.360 --> 00:04:15.520 Now remember, he is writing from prison this letter to the church at Philippi. 00:04:15.680 --> 00:04:32.240 And he's saying, Listen, I know that there are people who stand against the gospel, but we are going to contend and wrestle for the gospel because that's the one thing that being saved by the gospel commands and requires of us to do. 00:04:32.639 --> 00:04:40.399 This is a sign of destruction for the opponents, but of your deliverance, and this is from God. 00:04:40.639 --> 00:04:56.160 For it has been given to you on Christ's behalf not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him, having the same struggle that you saw I, Paul, had, and now hear that I, Paul, have. 00:04:57.199 --> 00:05:04.720 And so he describes what it means for us in great detail using his own experience that he's in the middle of there. 00:05:04.959 --> 00:05:14.959 So I want you to just see a couple of scripture points that I want to remind you from last week that I want to set up on how we answer this question: how do I live for the gospel? 00:05:15.120 --> 00:05:21.759 Now you remember this live, this is an illustration of citizenship and our greater duty as citizens. 00:05:21.920 --> 00:05:27.120 And so he's literally putting up for us the idea when he says, live worthy of the gospel. 00:05:27.279 --> 00:05:32.480 That is to meet the duties that I have as a citizen of heaven. 00:05:32.720 --> 00:05:35.920 It is a call to that sense of citizenship. 00:05:36.079 --> 00:05:43.920 It elevates these greater duties that I should have that I am following that are calling me to live in a different way. 00:05:44.160 --> 00:05:46.079 And then we looked at this idea worthy. 00:05:46.319 --> 00:05:49.279 Live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel. 00:05:49.439 --> 00:05:54.800 In the original language, that's that picture of scales that you would use in commerce. 00:05:54.879 --> 00:05:58.879 And here's the price for something, and it weighs down that scale. 00:05:58.959 --> 00:06:02.480 And in order to be worthy, you have to balance those scales. 00:06:02.639 --> 00:06:08.959 And so we know that the way we're we're not worthy in our own, again, he's talking about the gospel of Christ. 00:06:09.120 --> 00:06:12.240 What that means is I have to surrender my life to him. 00:06:12.560 --> 00:06:26.319 I have to allow him to work in me, and I have to be so surrendered, allowing so much Jesus to come into my life that it is beginning to balance my life to the scale of the life of Jesus. 00:06:26.720 --> 00:06:29.519 That's the standard that we're called to. 00:06:29.759 --> 00:06:35.040 Now, that's a standard that goes beyond just, Amen, Pastor Greg. 00:06:35.279 --> 00:06:37.680 We love the word and we go on about what we do. 00:06:37.920 --> 00:06:49.519 In fact, Paul is specifically challenging the idea that all we have to do is show up at church every now and then and say yes and amen, something, and then go about and live our lives as we want to. 00:06:49.680 --> 00:06:52.560 Look what he says here in verse 29. 00:06:52.720 --> 00:06:56.079 For it has been given to you on Christ's behalf. 00:06:56.319 --> 00:07:09.040 Now he uses that word Christ there, not just Jesus, his name as Redeemer, but Christ, his title, as the anointed Messiah sacrifice for our sins. 00:07:09.439 --> 00:07:23.680 In other words, he's saying, because you have trusted in Jesus' sacrifice for your sins, his death, burial, and resurrection, it has not been given to you on Christ's behalf only to believe in him. 00:07:25.120 --> 00:07:31.600 Christians are called to a life far beyond just hell of Jesus. 00:07:33.519 --> 00:07:34.959 How go to church. 00:07:36.879 --> 00:07:47.759 In this context, we've got to understand that we are called to a standard of citizenship and activity and living that is way beyond ourselves. 00:07:48.560 --> 00:07:57.199 It is something that is approximating the same sacrifice that Jesus had when he gave his life for us. 00:07:57.439 --> 00:08:04.319 It should only make sense that if Jesus gave his life for us and I give him my life, it's not my life anymore. 00:08:05.600 --> 00:08:07.199 It's Jesus' life. 00:08:07.439 --> 00:08:13.600 And what is Jesus going to do with this life that I've surrendered him other than what he did with his? 00:08:14.800 --> 00:08:28.000 And so my life is called literally, behaviorally, activity-wise, to a greater standard than just I believe in Jesus. 00:08:28.560 --> 00:08:30.800 And here's, get these other pictures. 00:08:30.959 --> 00:08:32.159 Here's what he says. 00:08:32.720 --> 00:08:35.679 In verse 27, live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. 00:08:35.840 --> 00:08:45.120 Then whenever I see I come, matter what comes against us, it doesn't matter what those struggles are, we are standing firm in the gospel, greater than he who is in us, than he that is in the world, and therefore we are strong fourth and two, and we're down by four, and we have to get a touchdown. 00:10:04.639 --> 00:10:10.799 And you get in the huddle, and the quarterback looks at you as a guard or a tackle or a center. 00:10:56.480 He contended for our souls on the cross. 00:10:56.799 --> 00:11:03.440 He conquered death and sin and rose again conquering death and sin in victory. 00:11:03.759 --> 00:11:06.399 And we are struggling for that. 00:11:06.639 --> 00:11:15.360 This is the call, this is the challenge, this is the standard, this is elevating our definition of what it means to be a Christian. 00:11:16.000 --> 00:11:23.759 We've got to learn in our lives and our modern culture, there are so many things that distract us and so many things that pull us away. 00:11:24.000 --> 00:11:26.000 There are so many things we can be involved in. 00:11:26.159 --> 00:11:28.639 There are so many duties and responsibilities that we have. 00:11:28.799 --> 00:11:37.039 We are so busy, just not that far after COVID, when we were all sitting around bored and now we're running ragged already again. 00:11:37.200 --> 00:11:38.799 It did not take very long. 00:11:39.039 --> 00:11:44.960 In the midst of all of that, are we contending for the gospel? 00:11:46.240 --> 00:11:49.279 Are we fighting with everything that is in us? 00:11:49.519 --> 00:11:57.519 Are we struggling to advance the gospel regardless of what's going on around us? 00:11:58.159 --> 00:12:02.480 Paul uses the example of himself here. 00:12:02.960 --> 00:12:05.840 And listen to what he says again in this verse in 29. 00:12:06.080 --> 00:12:17.919 For it has been given to you on Christ's behalf, not only to believe in him, it is not enough to give mere assent to the truth of the gospel or scripture. 00:12:18.159 --> 00:12:19.600 I've hidden that because I didn't want anybody to know I did it. 00:12:48.799 --> 00:12:51.919 All of us understand what the conviction of sin is. 00:12:52.480 --> 00:12:57.200 The effect of sin is this our sin must be judged by a holy God. 00:12:57.759 --> 00:12:59.679 That's why death happens in the world. 00:12:59.840 --> 00:13:01.120 That's why people die. 00:13:01.440 --> 00:13:07.919 Death is that our bodies do not live for eternity because of the judgment of sin. 00:13:08.000 --> 00:13:14.159 And our bodies will physically die, but that death, that physical death, that human death, is not the only death. 00:13:14.399 --> 00:13:20.720 We will spend an eternity in hell paying the price for our sins, being judged for our sins by a holy God. 00:13:22.240 --> 00:13:26.720 Paul says, look, they can put me in prison for preaching that, but that's what the gospel is. 00:13:26.960 --> 00:13:29.200 And he says, there's no other hope but Jesus. 00:13:29.360 --> 00:13:32.799 But he uses the term the gospel of Christ, and that's the good news. 00:13:32.879 --> 00:13:36.399 And he goes on to give in detail in chapter 2 what happened. 00:13:36.720 --> 00:13:38.960 God looks at us as the when I sinned. 00:13:50.639 --> 00:13:56.000 But that picture in that psalm also gives the picture of Jesus as the Son of Man. 00:13:56.240 --> 00:14:01.120 Because he looked down out of heaven and he said, Greg's life, I am not satisfied with that. 00:14:01.360 --> 00:14:04.960 And he stepped out of heaven in grace and mercy and he lived a sinless life. 00:14:05.120 --> 00:14:06.879 He put himself in the form of a man. 00:14:07.039 --> 00:14:14.639 It says, he humbled himself into the form and the physical nature of a man in chapter 2, so that he could live a human life. 00:14:14.799 --> 00:14:16.159 He lived a sinless life. 00:14:16.240 --> 00:14:32.399 And then he allowed himself and gave himself to people who took him to a cross and they nailed him there, and he died so that his sinless human life could become a substitute death to pay the price for our sins, so we would not have to. 00:14:32.639 --> 00:14:36.159 On the third day, Jesus rose again, conquering death and sin. 00:14:36.240 --> 00:14:43.840 And now the good news of gospel, the gospel, the good news of Christ is he is that sacrifice that died in our place. 00:14:44.159 --> 00:14:54.799 And if we will bring our lives to him and our sin to him, and we will confess our sin to him, Jesus, I know I'm a sinner, but I know you love me and pay the price for my sin. 00:14:54.879 --> 00:15:01.279 And I'm going to says: listen, if it has radically changed your here and your later, if it has radically changed your human life and given you eternal life, if your sins were forgiven and you have been transformed and you are in the process of being transformed in the image of Jesus, then how in the world can you just sit around and not contend for the gospel that has saved you? 00:16:21.360 --> 00:16:22.799 That's was opposed in Philippi when he was preaching the gospel there in Philippi. 00:17:24.160 --> 00:17:34.559 You've heard the story of the Philippian jailer who Paul led to Christ while he was in prison when God released him from prison. 00:17:34.799 --> 00:17:42.319 And now they know he is in Rome and he is in shackles and chains and prison because of preaching the gospel. 00:17:42.559 --> weird to kind of preach sometimes about these things in America because we have the First Amendment and constitutional protections, and we were, you know, godly nation and all that kind of stuff, you know. 00:18:04.000 --> 00:18:05.759 That's we've we've had all that. 00:18:05.920 --> 00:18:10.319 But listen, we're going to have to learn what passages of scriptures like this mean. 00:18:12.079 --> governor of one of the states in America, who are standing firmly and celebrating positions that are in direct contravention to the Holy Scripture of God. 00:18:45.359 --> 00:18:58.559 I mean, you know, some people don't like it when preachers, whatever, but you know, when they step into the Word of God and they step into our world, it is clear. 00:18:58.880 --> 00:18:59.759 Thank you for that. 00:19:18.160 --> 00:19:44.160 Just to understand, when they celebrate taking your tax dollars to pay for abortions to the ninth month, then it's not a far stretch for the radical LGBTQ agenda that they both clearly have been invested in for the entirety of their political careers. 00:19:44.960 --> 00:19:52.000 It is not difficult if you're going to take our tax dollars to pay for abortions. 00:19:52.799 --> 00:20:07.519 If you care that little about life, they'll take our tax dollars and they'll pay for the surgery of minors to attempt to change their genders and celebrate it as if that is invested in the picture of marriage. 00:21:01.440 --> 00:21:09.440 Husbands play a part where we live out the gospel and the picture of Jesus before our families and our children. 00:21:10.160 --> 00:21:20.160 And then when you live a sacrifice-loving life like the gospel of Christ, then what's going to happen is people are going to see and they're going to want to know how to receive that picture of marriage by making it something other than a man and a woman living out the gospel so their children know what the gospel of Jesus is, then They it is a direct attack on the very gospel of
