you've been in church a long time, you've probably heard reference to this. 00:07:26.000 --> 00:07:29.839 We sing songs about these are the days of Ezekiel and all that. 00:07:30.399 --> 00:07:32.319 So here's the passage of that. 00:07:32.480 --> 00:07:37.920 Uh, Ezekiel is a prophet in Israel, uh in Judah, actually. 00:07:38.000 --> 00:07:41.120 You know, there's been a civil war, the nation's been divided into two countries. 00:07:41.199 --> 00:07:43.519 There's the two tribes, and then there's the ten tribes. 00:07:43.600 --> 00:07:46.160 The ten tribes have already been conquered by other people. 00:07:46.399 --> 00:07:50.480 Uh the two tribes, Judah, they've been walking away from the Lord a long time. 00:07:50.560 --> 00:07:53.519 He warned them through Jeremiah and everybody else, you're going to be conquered. 00:07:53.600 --> 00:07:55.680 I'm going to have Babylon come conquer you. 00:07:55.839 --> 00:07:58.720 And sure enough, now Babylon has been conquering them. 00:07:58.959 --> 00:08:03.600 They several times would come in and do battle with Israelites. 00:08:03.680 --> 00:08:04.560 They would defeat them. 00:08:04.720 --> 00:08:06.879 They would take people in captivity off. 00:08:07.120 --> 00:08:13.040 Ezekiel was taken in captivity off with people like Daniel and Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. 00:08:13.439 --> 00:08:17.759 So he is now a prophet in Babylon, speaking to the children of Israel. 00:08:18.000 --> 00:08:32.720 And so once they're defeated and all this is happening, he's recently had a guy come from another captive group who tells him the walls have been destroyed in Jerusalem, the temple has been destroyed, and it's been defiled, and it's all a mess and all of that. 00:08:32.879 --> 00:08:40.799 And so now the children of Israel are in this despondent state that we have been defeated and we have no more hope. 00:08:41.039 --> 00:08:47.600 And so God shows up into Ezekiel's life and he is going to give him a message here. 00:08:48.000 --> 00:08:52.399 And so the way that he shares with Ezekiel is important in this. 00:08:52.480 --> 00:08:57.039 So here's, we'll just read it, and then I'll talk to about, I'll talk about how to write a lesson out of it. 00:08:57.200 --> 00:09:05.919 But here's what he says, Ezekiel 37, verse 1 The hand of the Lord was upon me, and he brought me out in the spirit of the Lord, and he set me down in the middle of a valley. 00:09:06.080 --> 00:09:10.000 So this is that we most scholars think this is a vision that he's given him. 00:09:10.080 --> 00:09:13.360 It may have been a real valley, either way, it doesn't matter. 00:09:13.600 --> 00:09:28.320 In the spirit, it's God putting him into a setting that God has created, and he is creating a movie here that he's going to unpack for Ezekiel to try to make a point to Ezekiel. 00:09:28.480 --> 00:09:34.080 And so he says, He led me around in this valley, it was full of bones. 00:09:34.320 --> 00:09:41.200 And he led me around them, and behold, there were very many on the surface of the valley, and behold, they were very dry. 00:09:41.440 --> 00:09:43.279 So you got to paint a picture of this. 00:09:43.360 --> 00:09:49.840 He's in this big valley, and it is just the aftermath of battle, if you want to look at it that way. 00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:56.080 It's just skeleton after skeleton, and they've been there so long that the bones have dried up. 00:09:56.159 --> 00:09:57.039 They're brittle. 00:09:57.120 --> 00:09:59.919 It's just this awful picture of desolation. 00:10:00.159 --> 00:10:06.159 So God has put him in this setting where he's thinking this is the worst, most desolate thing he's ever seen. 00:10:07.120 --> 00:10:11.679 God asks Ezekiel, son of man, can these bones live? 00:10:12.159 --> 00:10:17.679 And Ezekiel responds, O Lord God, only you know. 00:10:18.000 --> 00:10:24.320 Then God says to Ezekiel, Prophesy over these bones and say to them, in other words, preach to them. 00:10:24.559 --> 00:10:30.320 O Lord, uh, he says, uh, O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. 00:10:30.559 --> 00:10:35.279 So he is preaching to the bones now what God has said. 00:10:36.000 --> 00:10:56.080 Uh and then thus says the Lord God, to these bones, behold, I, God, will cause breath to enter you, the bones, and you the bones shall live, and I, God, will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and to cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord. 00:10:56.480 --> 00:10:59.840 So Ezekiel says, I prophesied as I was commanded. 00:11:00.000 --> 00:11:07.919 And as I prophesied, there was a sound, and behold, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. 00:11:08.159 --> 00:11:09.600 Now get a picture here. 00:11:09.919 --> 00:11:13.200 This is a valley filled with dry bones. 00:11:13.440 --> 00:11:20.720 If bones are starting to come together, they're starting to come together all over this valley, and so this is a roar going on. 00:11:20.799 --> 00:11:22.799 I mean, this sounds like a train wreck. 00:11:22.960 --> 00:11:27.600 I mean, you got all these skeletons rattling and all these bones together coming, all this kind of stuff. 00:11:27.759 --> 00:11:32.639 It's this incredible picture and vision of what's happening. 00:11:32.799 --> 00:11:42.240 And then he says in verse 8, and I looked, and behold, there were sinews on them, and flesh had come on them, and skin had covered them, but there was no breath in them. 00:11:42.399 --> 00:11:45.120 So he watches literally they come back to life. 00:11:45.279 --> 00:11:54.639 It's almost like a virtual reality CSI show or something that you see where they take some skeleton and they run it through something and then they tell you what the person looked like. 00:11:54.799 --> 00:11:57.440 I mean, it's literally that kind of deal, but in real life. 00:11:57.679 --> 00:12:00.159 And so he said, but he says there's no breath in them. 00:12:00.320 --> 00:12:07.279 So God says to Ezekiel in verse 9, Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath. 00:12:07.440 --> 00:12:12.960 Now we're speaking, and he's talking about the four winds and all of that. 00:12:13.519 --> 00:12:19.279 Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain that they may live. 00:12:19.440 --> 00:12:27.200 And this is a picture of speaking and calling out in prayer, basically, to the Holy Spirit to come and move. 00:12:27.360 --> 00:12:36.000 This four winds and the extent of the earth and all that is a picture of God as creator, and he's asking for God's breath to come and to breathe into them. 00:12:36.240 --> 00:12:44.960 So as I prophesied, as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived and stood on their feet, an exceedingly great army. 00:12:45.600 --> 00:12:46.960 Imagine that picture. 00:12:47.200 --> 00:12:54.720 Verse 11, then God said to me, Son of man, these bones, and now he's going to explain what he's doing, these bones are the house of Israel. 00:12:54.960 --> 00:13:07.279 What you've looked at, this desolation, is what my people feel in captivity and in judgment and in destruction, and that's the spirit of the people that we see. 00:13:08.559 --> 00:13:19.600 Behold, they say, the people of Israel say, our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost or destroyed. 00:13:20.480 --> 00:13:23.919 And then he says, We are indeed cut off. 00:13:24.080 --> 00:13:35.360 That is the spirit of the people, and God has illustrated the spirit of the Israelites and the hopelessness that they were feeling in this moment by this picture of these dry bones. 00:13:35.600 --> 00:13:47.519 Therefore, prophesy and say to them, the people of Israel, thus says the Lord God, behold, I will open your graves, the children of Israel, I will open your graves and raise you from your graves, O my people. 00:13:47.759 --> 00:13:55.919 I will bring you into the land of Israel, and you shall know that I am the Lord when I open your graves and raise you from your graves, O my people. 00:13:56.159 --> 00:13:58.960 He keeps repeating, O my people, O my extent of their hopelessness by this whole picture of dry bones and all this business. 00:14:13.200 --> 00:14:19.440 And when God reinvigorates them, he is now telling, that is what I'm going to do for Israel. 00:14:19.600 --> 00:14:29.039 And Ezekiel, I want that in your heart, and I want you to preach that message to my people, and I want you to preach it, believing in what you've just seen. --> 00:15:07.120 That's the covenant name of God. 00:15:07.360 --> 00:15:14.639 So he keeps repeating, O my people, O my people, O my people, and he reminds them and puts his thumbprint on this. 00:15:14.879 --> 00:15:22.320 This says the covenant-keeping God of Israel, that I will bring you back to your land and restore you. 00:15:22.480 --> 00:15:35.200 So this is a prophecy and a reiteration of a prophecy God has given that one day he will restore the nation of Israel, the people of Israel, to their land, and he will be faithful to those promises. 00:15:35.360 --> 00:15:38.799 And he is reminding him that he is the promise-keeping God. 00:15:39.039 --> 00:15:56.639 And so, in essence, what he's telling him is listen, I need you to reiterate to my people that they do not do before you speak, you need to be able to write your entire message, the four corners of your message, into 30 words or less. 00:17:38.319 --> 00:17:45.359 If it's not that plain and that clear, you them to understand I need to get my message of hope and faithfulness to my promises back in front of them because they are saying their hope has perished and it has not because I got and their hope,
