Speaker A:

Welcome, my fellow music lovers to another exciting episode of the music of me. As always, I'm your host, Terry. Today we're diving into the dazzling, glittering world of the Eurovision Song Contest. Imagine a night where countries from all over Europe and beyond come together for a spectacular celebration of music, culture and creativity. It's a thrilling mix of catchy tunes, jaw dropping performances and a dash of friendly rivalry that keeps fans cheering and dancing all night long. Here's a fun fact to get us started. Did you know that the very first Eurovision contest in 1956 featured just seven countries competing with only two songs each? Fast forward to today and we have over 40 nations battling it out for the coveted trophy. Each one bringing their own unique flavor and flair to the stage. From outrageous costumes to unforgettable melodies, Eurovision is like a musical carnival that has captivated millions worldwide. In this episode, we're going to explore the history of Eurovision. Highlight some of the most iconic moments that have made us laugh, cry and cheer and discuss how this beloved contest has evolved over the years. So grab your flags, get ready to sing along and let's embark on this fabulous journey into the heart of Eurovision. I don't know a lot about Eurovision, which is why I wanted to do this episode. That and you know, I did the episode about Celine Dion which I'll link in the show notes. It's a very interesting episode and she actually won the Eurovision contest. So then I was curious about Eurovision, so that's why I'm doing this episode. So what exactly is Eurovision? Imagine a spectacular musical showdown where countries from all across Europe and even a few from beyond, come together to celebrate their unique sounds and styles. The Eurovision Song Contest is an annual international music competition organized by the European Broadcasting Union or the EBU. It's kind of like the Olympics for pop music, where each nation showcases its best talent in a night filled with glitz, glamour and a whole lot of heart. At its core, Eurovision is all about promoting unity and cultural exchange through music. It's a chance for countries to share their stories, celebrate their heritage and perhaps even heal old divides. All while delivering some of the catchiest tunes youll ever hear. Picture dazzling performances, wild costumes and an audience filled with fans waving flags and singing along. Its a true celebration of diversity, with each act bringing its own flavor to the mix. Now lets break down how this fabulous contest works. Each participating country submits an original song performed live on stage. These performances are often a whirlwind of creativity, featuring everything from traditional folk elements to the latest pop hits and sometimes even jaw dropping choreography. You never know what you're going to get. One moment you might be mesmerized by a heartfelt ballad and the next you could be dancing along to an upbeat disco anthem. As for the voting, it's a thrilling part of the show that keeps everyone on the edge of their seats. Each country has its own national jury, made up of music professionals who score the performances. But it doesn't stop there. The real magic happens when the public gets to vote too. After all the performances, viewers can cast their votes for their favorite acts via a televote system. It's kind of like, you know, American Idol, America's Got Talent, stuff like that, only for Eurovision. This mix of jury and public votes makes for some nail biting moments as the scores are announced, with countries eagerly anticipating the results. So whether you're tuning in for the first time or you're a seasoned fan, Eurovision is all about the joy of the music, the thrill of the competition and the power of unity. So get ready for a night of unforgettable performances and perhaps a few surprises along the way. Because who doesn't love surprises, right? Alright, let's take a trip down memory lane and explore the colorful history of the Eurovision Song contest. A journey that began in 1956 when it was created as a way to bring post war Europe together through music. Picture Europe, still healing from the scars of war, decided to come together for a friendly competition where countries could showcase their musical talents. The first contest featured just seven nations, each one presenting two songs. It was a humble beginning for what would become a monumental event. Fast forward to today. And Eurovision has blossomed into a massive spectacle featuring overdose, 40 countries. And guess what? It's not just Europe anymore. Australia has also joined the party. That's right, the land Down under has been sending its best acts since 2015, bringing a fresh vibe to the competition and proving that great music knows no borders. Throughout the years, Eurovision has undergone some incredible changes and milestones that have shaped it into the spectacular event we know today. One of the biggest game changers was the introduction of televoting in the late 1990s. This allowed the public to have a direct say in the results, adding a thrilling layer of excitement to the contest. Imagine the tension as the viewers across Europe pick up their phones to vote for their favorites, all while cheering on their own countries. Then came the introduction of the semi final rounds in 2004, a brilliant way to accommodate the growing number of participants. Now, countries that may not have previously made it to the final could have a shot at showcasing their talents. This change not only increased the competition but also created more dramatic moments as countries battled it out for a chance to shine on the grand stage. Now let's talk about the evolution of musical styles and performances over the decades. In the early years, you might have encountered simple ballads with orchestral backing, but fast forward to the seventies and eighties and you'd see the rise of glamrock and disco. And who can forget the iconic Abba who took the crown in 1974 with their infectious hit Waterloo? Their victory marked the beginning of a new era, paving the way for more extravagant performances and outlandish fashion choices. As the years rolled on, the competition began to reflect the changing musical landscape. The nineties and early two thousands brought a wave of pop, hip hop and even ethnic sounds, showcasing the rich tapestry of cultures across Europe. The performances became more theatrical, incorporating elaborate staging, dazzling costumes and choreography that left audiences breathless. From techno beats to heartfelt ballads, Eurovision became a platform for experimentation and creativity, with artists pushing the boundaries of what a song contest could be. In recent years, we've seen an even wider variety of musical influences, with non english songs gaining popularity and performances that blend different genres and styles. From the catchy hooks of pop to the poignant lyrics of ballads, Eurovision has become a vibrant melting pot of sounds that keeps fans eagerly anticipating what's next. From its humble beginnings to the dazzling spectacle it is today, Eurovision's history is a testament to the power of music to unite and inspire. As we continue to celebrate this beloved contest, we can only imagine what the future holds for the next generation of Eurovision stars. Alright, Eurovision fans, buckle up because now we're about to dive into the wild, wacky and downright legendary moments that have made Eurovision unforgettable. We're talking cheers, tears and oh, yes, those moments that make you want to cover your eyes, butt peek through your fingers. From dazzling performances to jaw dropping controversies, Eurovision has given us plenty to talk about long after the glitter has settled. First up, drum roll, please. Let's give it up for the ultimate Eurovision royalty, Abba. Know I love Abba. Flashback to 1974 when this swedish super group hit the stage with that song. You know it, you love it. Waterloo. Cue the flashy costumes, perfect harmonies and energy so electric it could power the disco ball. Abba didnt just win the contest, they owned it, launching a musical revolution that still gets us dancing today. Picture it. Epic choreography, catchy hooks and a performance that snatched the hearts and votes of Europe. Waterloo wasnt just a hit. It was the moment Eurovision skyrocketed into pop culture fame. And Abba? Well, they showed the world that Eurovision isnt just a contest. It's a superstar factory. Now, let's talk about the diva herself. None other than Celine Tion. Yep, before she was belting out titanic anthems and making stadium swoon, she was repping Switzerland at Eurovision in 1988. Armed with her killer ballad, ne parter pas sa moi, Celine hit the stage and, let's be honest, left everyone completely speechless. You could practically hear the collective gasp as she poured her heart into every note, leaving the audience gripping their seats like they were on an emotional roller coaster. And spoiler alert, she won. But Celine didn't just win the contest, she blew the roof off Eurovision's potential. Her victory was a game changer, proving that Eurovision wasn't just about catchy bopse. It could showcase serious vocal talent too. Who would have guessed that this fresh faced canadian singer would go on to sell over 200 million records and become a pop legend? Eurovision did, that's who. This performance is the ultimate proof that Eurovision doesn't just create stars, it creates icons. Alright, zoom ahead to 2021 and boom. Here comes main skin, the italian rockers who crashed onto the Eurovision stage and lipped everyone's jaws on the floor with their song. Forgive me for this pronunciation because I don't speak Italian. But with their song, Z de Buoni, they brought an explosive performance that practically screamed, we're here to rock and you better listen. Forget glitter and pop. Main skin gave us raw, unapologetic rock and roll with enough swaggers to power the entire show. Their edgy style, electrifying energy and take no prisoners attitude lit up the stage like nothing wed seen in years. The crowd obsessed, the judges sold Manskins, snagged that Eurovision trophy. And the best part? They didnt just win. They went viral. Suddenly the whole world was rocking out to their tunes and they sparked a full on rock revival in the mainstream music scene. Manskin's epic victory wasn't just another Eurovision win. It was proof that Eurovision isn't afraid to break the mold and launch global superstars, no matter what the genre is. Rock on Eurovision. Uh, main skin. I had not heard of them until I did a workout video one day and one of their songs was in there. So now I know they won Eurovision, so that's cool. Alright, I have more to discuss, but first, here is my interesting fact of the week. Welcome to my interesting fact of the week. Let's talk about a Eurovision powerhouse that might surprise you. Ireland. Yes. The land of shamrocks, leprechauns and riverdance also happens to be the ultimate Eurovision champion. How, you ask? Well, Ireland holds the record for the most Eurovision wins, a jaw dropping seven victories. They also have the ultimate bragging rights for the most consecutive wins. Ireland managed to clinch the title three years in a row from 1992 to 1994. If that isnt pure Eurovision magic, I dont know what is. Lets break it down. In 1992, Ireland's reign of musical supremacy began when Linda Martin belted out why me? A soulful ballad that tugged at Europe's heartstrings. A year later, Nima Kavanaugh came in strong with in your eyes, proving Ireland was there to win, not just compete. And finally, in 1994, Paul Harrington and Charlie McGeton swooped in with rock and roll kids, serenading the continent into submission. This was also the year Riverdance was born as the interval act, further cementing Ireland's role as the Eurovision royalty. These back to back wins were basically like Ireland saying, oh, you thought we were done, we're just getting started. But here's where it gets even wilder. Ireland was so good at winning Eurovision that by the late nineties there was a rumor that they didnt want to win anymore because hosting the event became too expensive. They may or may not have allegedly toned down their performances to avoid winning too often. Whether thats true or just Eurovision folklore, Ireland will forever be the legend of the contest, leaving the rest of Europe, and now Australia, of course, in awe of their unmatched reignite. So the next time someone asks which country dominates Eurovision, just toss on some Linda Martin and say, why not Ireland? And now back to our episode. Welcome back, everybody. Alright, now we're going to talk about the juicy stuff. Eurovision wouldn't be Eurovision without a few controversies and some performances that make you go, wait, did that just happen? First up, the infamous political voting. We've all seen it. Countries handing out points to their neighbors like they're trading snacks at lunch. It's become a running joke. Sure, it makes for some eyebrow raising results, but hey, it's all part of the Eurovision chaos we've come to love. It adds an extra sprinkle of excitement and maybe just a dash of frustration to the mix. And Eurovision wouldnt be Eurovision without the epic performances. Right? From glittering costumes to next level creativity, this stage has seen it all. Remember when Conchita Wurst took the world by storm in 2014 with that stunning drag performance of rise like a Phoenix? Conchita didn't just win the contest, she won our hearts and gave us all goosebumps. And how could we forget Ukraine's jaw dropping 2016 entry? A perfect fusion of folk and modern pop that left us all breathless. Eurovision isn't just a contest. It's a glittering, unapologetic, larger than life spectacle where boldness always steals the show. And who could forget the viral moments that have forever become part of Eurovision history, whether its Norways 2019 act rocking the infamous duck face and fully embracing the playful, meme worthy madness, or that time in 2018 when a stage invader literally crashed the UKs performance. Yep, anything can and will happen when you go live on the Eurovision stage. These chaotic blink and youll miss it moments are the heart and soul of Eurovision on predictability. Eurovision is more than just a music contest. It's a celebration of creativity, boldness and let's be honest, a little bit of chaos. And that is why fans can't stop coming back for more. Because in Eurovision, the only thing you can really expect is the unexpected. Okay, now buckle up because we're about to dive into the epic cultural impact of Eurovision.
