So what we are doing at Smart Soulful Business is we're helping ourselves, and you, like, we're we're a community together that are working to build businesses that are soulful, strategic, and successful.
Becky Brown 0:52
Yes, and today, it's December 31st. The last day of 2025, often the day when most or many entrepreneurs feel equal parts tired and hopeful and possibly unsure of where to even begin going into the new year. So this episode is going to be your permission to stop overthinking Quarter 1 and just zero in and focus on the most impactful things that will move your business forward. So, by the end of today's episode, you will know the three things that deserve your energy first so that you can start the year with more clarity, more momentum and a whole lot less pressure. So, let's go ahead and jump in. Let's start here with this idea that Laurie and I have been talking about a whole lot recently in our personal conversations, with this idea that most women hit January feeling like they're already behind before the year has even begun, they compare themselves to the entrepreneurs who have already posted their color-coded plans on December 15th for all of their 2026 beautifully laid out and intentionally prepared, and suddenly it feels like already you are starting from a deficit. So, it's important to start with just the reminder that quarter one isn't a race. It's just a reset. It's a beautiful restart. I feel like New Years and restarts are just, it's a great way to start new beginnings, and it's a season for evaluation and realignment. But it's not necessarily a sprint to get into all new things, all new systems.
Laurie Graham 2:41
Yeah, you know, the other thing is, you're talking Becky, you have been such a good voice for me in this, because I always feel like I'm behind. Like, when you said that, like many women in January, feel like they're behind. I feel like I'm behind in December and October, November and, you know, June, like I feel like I'm behind a lot. And I think it's so great to say, in our truly authentic, real life way, that no one has arrived. Like, if you're listening to somebody who has a podcast or teaching on business or anything, and they are the complete top-down expert, it is a lie. Like, I don't know. Can I just say that? Like, yes, no one has arrived. We all kind of bounce back and forth. We have certain things that might trip us up more than trips other people up. Like you and I, Becky, have different things, right? Yeah, and this is one of those things that you speak into me a lot. And so if you're listening right now and you're like, oh my gosh, I feel like this all the time, I'll never get out of it. First off, that's not true. Like we can get out of it. We can get better. We can shorten our we talk about emotional response time, like, I don't sit in it as much as I used to, but, but this still is a struggle for me. So I love that we're talking about this. I love and I think it is such great timing on January 1st, like even before I had a business. New Year's Eve, right? December 31st. It's the time when we don't just set goals for the next year, but we look at all the things we failed at and or I have done that in the past, and I don't do that the same anymore.
Becky Brown 4:11
No, I really don't. You have totally changed the way you evaluate and look back and so much less shame in the way that you process now.
Laurie Graham 4:19
Yeah, which I think that's why it's so important to talk about this. So we're all in this together. Keep going, Becky. I hope I didn't interrupt your train of thought.
Becky Brown 4:26
No, no, no, no. I think that's just really important. Because I think it's important to recognize this is where a lot of our energy goes. Right? If you are thinking you're behind, a lot of your energy is going into, yeah, that thought, reinforcing that thought, the emotions that come with that thought, a lot of energy goes into that.
Laurie Graham 4:47
Yeah, yeah, yeah. When I think about where I lose time and energy, and I think a lot of people do, because we talk to a lot of people, you know, sometimes just that thought of being behind, leads to kind of a spiral, like, when we wake up, like, sometimes I think, what is that doing to me? What is that thought doing to me? That I feel behind? It already makes me feel a little bit of shame, stress, overwhelm, panic, where, if I thought something different, like, No, this is where I'm supposed to be. Like, maybe two weeks ago, I would have defined this as behind, but maybe this is literally a learning thing, and this is where I'm supposed to be. I think, for me, when I think about where I lose business time and energy, it's, it's in spiraling in my brain, like if I spent that time working instead of worrying, right? Or, you know, moving ahead to a goal and not feeling bad, or wondering how I'm going to get out of hole, right? I think I would, I don't know. I think I'd move forward in a different way.
Becky Brown 5:50
I agree. Yeah, I think there is a lot of lost time and energy in those emotional freakouts. And you know when you're feeling freaked out and overwhelmed and scared and stuck and out of control of your business income and results. Not only is that an exhausting place to stay, it's a distracting place to stay because you can't really think clearly, lay out wise plans, work even with focus, or even evaluate the things that are working or not, when you're freaking out and just making every decision, feeling every decision, out of this place of fear. That's, it's the emotional freakouts are rough, and the number one goal, it's kind of like in parenting my kids, I have a three and a five year old right now and when, when I'm parenting my kids, I often have to remind myself that the goal is not to change the behavior in the moment. The goal is to get them calm first. That is the top goal, calm first. And so then work on behavior change. And, you know, whatever.
Laurie Graham 6:57
And when I get myself calm and happy and ready and I'm excited and I'm forward thinking, my work is so different, and I think this is the worth, this is worth the time to talk about, like, what we say to ourselves, because I've been so aware over the past year or so, even relationships, that a lot of what we think is just a hypothesis, like, we really don't know. Like, it's like it's almost a judgment, like the fact that we're behind actually is not accurate. Now, I could look at my goals last year and say, Okay, it looks like I'm behind, but the fact is that, this isn't done. This is done. This didn't work. Like I want those are the those are the pure facts. I can say I'm behind, or I can say, Oh, I set some goals that didn't happen. That doesn't mean I'm behind, right? And I think sometimes the way we talk to ourselves as we look into Quarter 1, I think it's a great place to start. So if we could all just take a breath and think we're not behind, maybe you had a goal to start a podcast or to release something, and you've been sitting on this for three years. It doesn't mean you're behind, because if we tell ourselves we're behind, it's going to give us a whole different frame of mind and a whole different energy moving forward. So what if, today, on December 31st, 2025, we all just agreed that we're exactly where we're supposed to be. How do we move forward? Like, don't you think that would like change something?
Becky Brown 8:17
Oh, absolutely, absolutely. I think I've mentioned this the past. What two three episodes is when we give ourselves permission to actually be where we are, in our businesses, in our emotional freakouts, like, give yourself permission to be where you are, because that's the only place where you can actually figure out your realistic next step. It's the only place.
Laurie Graham 8:38
Yeah, give yourself permission to be where you are, you know, like, let's name the emotional freakouts as what they are. They're not factual. They're just based on our hypothesis or our desires. And what about comparison? Do you think that comes in sometimes?
Becky Brown 8:50
Yeah, well, I think the comparison that you were just talking about in your own mind, you're, you obviously feel behind because you had some expectation of where you were supposed to be. So you have some comparison in your unconscious expectations of yourself. And like we just mentioned, you know, you're comparing yourself to all these other entrepreneurs who maybe do have the color-coded calendars, and the plans, and all that stuff, and they're, I think, like, I think it's really important to say out loud that avoiding all comparison is not the goal here. I actually want you looking at other people's businesses and what other people are doing that motivates you. That's fun and exciting. I want you looking at those things. And I also want you to be aware of that shame voice that starts circling, like, Oh, you're not as good as them. Oh, you you're behind. Like, those are the the phrases. I want you to be hyperalert and vigilant about to not let them take control here, because the comparison of like, Hey, that's a great thing that they're doing in their business. I want more of that in my business. Pay attention to those things. That's important. It stands out for a reason.
Laurie Graham 9:55
I even like that you said that's great, like, I'm celebrating with them, because that's really true, like we can reframe how we look at other people. They have a bigger email list, yay. That's so awesome. I want to get there too, instead of I'm behind. So that's another great reframe. Okay, so let's get into the practical, we want to help everyone, including ourselves, really get into what matters most in Quarter 1, as we get into a new year, if we're not behind, the real question becomes, what deserves our attention? First, you know, January gets really noisy. As I mentioned, my brain is usually really noisy. But let's talk about January. This is when we see everybody setting their goals, selling something new, announcing a new program. Hey, this is what's going to happen in January. And we also know many of those announcements don't come to fruition, and we don't want to be like that, like, we don't need to add to January noise. In fact, as we talked about launches an episode or two ago, your launch can be revealed. It can be quiet, like, we don't have to be noisy, even when we're doing great things. But January gets really noisy, and I think it would be so awesome to go into Quarter 1 really looking at strengthening the core of our businesses, not necessarily inventing a brand new one. That's because we all have and maybe you're just baby stepping, and you just have the idea, and maybe you've just launched something right? Whatever it is, if you're listening to this podcast, you got something going on already. And what if we thought about Quarter 1 as more clarity, choice and courage, rather than reinventing like doing something all brand new, because you've already got something in your mind, already going, already launched, whatever that is. What if we strengthen the core instead of, like, creating something brand new, because I think that foundation is really good and Becky, I think this is one of your strengths. Like, I'm always like, new idea squirrel, let's chase the fancy new shiny toy, and you're not. So do you want to speak to this a little bit?
Becky Brown 11:56
Yeah, I mean, it's true. I'm scared of new ideas, and this is why we balance each other, because we need both. We need the new ideas and the flexibility to change in our businesses. But I am like routine. Let's stick to what we know like it is. It's my strength and sticking to the core. And I think that what's important about this is to acknowledge and recognize that there is very likely something in your business that's working really well. It may not be where you want it to be, but there it is. Very likely there's something in your business that you rock at, that you are bringing your strengths and experience and expertise and action to, that you're doing really well right now. So let's not minimize that and say, Ah, but these other things are more important. Like, let's say, let's call that out and use that as your foundation, your launch pad, to like, okay, let's lean into that and grow that even more this year.
Laurie Graham 12:51
Yeah, that's why the three Focus Anchors, which we haven't gotten to yet, as you're talking I'm like, that's why this works so well, yes, because, you know, as I talked about the foundation, which gets into a lot of different things, and not chasing the brand new, shiny reinvention, that's they're all important, and they're all going to come into this quarter as we talk about the three Focus Anchors.
Becky Brown 13:13
And let's just pause for just a second, because some of us are really, really tired. It is the end of 2025, we have worked really hard, and we are not feeling like, Oh, I've got all this energy.
Laurie Graham 13:26
Christmas decorations aren't still up for me. How about you?
Becky Brown 13:28
Right? Yes, absolutely. And so let's just acknowledge the reality that you and I live in a lot, right? We are often very tired. Neither Laurie or I sleep well. And so if somebody's energy is low right now, but they still want that growth for their businesses, what are some of those strategic places to start now?
Laurie Graham 13:53
I'm just going to give one, because it's the only thing that helps me when I am overwhelmed, it's just choose, choose one. It doesn't have to be, it doesn't have to be perfect. It doesn't have to be the best idea. Just choose one place to start. Because I really believe our momentum, our motivation, comes when we start moving. Like sometimes we wait for motivation, or we wait, in the Christian world, for God to give me the perfect idea, for God to confirm it, or for clarity. I don't occasionally, I've gotten clarity ahead of time, but usually clarity, momentum, motivation, the success comes when I start moving. And so for me, the straight up strategic place to start is just choosing whether you have clarity or not, whether you're sure or not, just choosing. And these three Anchors, like these are the three places to choose. Like, I like we're creating what we what we live by Becky, and so, like, this is exactly where I would start, whether you are tired, exhausted, or, like, flying high. Like. I think it's the same place.
Becky Brown 14:53
And one of the things that we say to each other all the time is, wow, we have done a whole lot tired. And so I guess. I just want to speak that into you too, is that you being tired is real and it is important, and you deserve rest, and that doesn't mean you'll get nothing done in Quarter 1.
Laurie Graham 15:11
Yes, and I love that you said you deserve rest, and you can have that rest like, it's not just you're going to push through, like we do both and here all the time. But you're right. It's not either we can we can do tired, yeah, it doesn't mean we're not taking care of ourselves at the same time either.
Becky Brown 15:25
So absolutely. Okay, so you we have hinted at these free three Anchors this whole episode, so let's dive into what those actually look like. So these are the three Anchors that just simplify your decisions and direct your energy. We're just putting words to these kind of buckets that we already do. So this isn't about busy work. It's not about perfect systems or endless lists. This is just centerpieces of a profitable and soulful business. So your Anchor Number One is your Anchor Offer, your main revenue stream. It could be a product, it could be a service. It could be a package you offer. It's just whatever thing you have in your business that reliably brings in income and or clients. So think about what that looks like for your business, because this can look wildly different for all businesses, Laurie, what is your Anchor Offer? What does that look like for your business?
Laurie Graham 16:25
For me, for January, and I think also, like a lot of us, have different, different offers, right? So we're talking about choosing, choosing our Anchor Offer for this quarter, right? Like so it you may have focused on something else a year before, but for me, it's my membership with Small Church Ministry. It's my network. For me, this is what's raising to the top of, like, priority, streamlining it functioning better. Like, this is, this is a great revenue stream for me. It's solid. It's, it's worth some time and energy.
Becky Brown 16:57
Yeah, yeah, for sure, yeah, I love that. So I just want to emphasize to you your Anchor Offer, this thing that reliably brings in income and clients, this is, you need to have one of these. Okay, so I also want to say I did not have one of these for years. I was doing all of the accessory things. I was doing the rhythms of business, the things that you're supposed to do regularly that they recommend, oh, like, post on social media, do these things. I was doing those things, and I didn't have an offer and I wasn't making money, and it was confusing to me. And so I just want to encourage you that even, like everything else is optional. But if you have a business and you want to be making money, your Anchor Offer is not optional. You need something. This is the offer that deserves your best energy first, to make sure that people know that you have an offer. We've talked about that in other episodes too. Sometimes we're so kind of hesitant or scared that we don't talk about what we've actually created, and so people don't even know that you have something that they can buy from you. Yeah, that's important.
Laurie Graham 18:00
And let me just also mention this, because this is in the printable that we have for you. We have a PDF action guide that goes along with this. But under the anchor offer section, it's going to say, choose one of these. Not all of them. One of them. It says either. And this is a choice. This isn't all the same thing. The offer that brings the most income, the offer that already has momentum, the offer that you want to grow steadily, the offer that feels essential to your mission right now. And so I just, I just kind of wanted to clarify that, because I'm not sure that that was clear when I mentioned the network. Because the network is not my highest revenue offer, but for me, it's my steadiest. It brings in the monthly, more predictable income. And so we're not saying that there's one offer here, like we hope that you have multiple streams of revenue, right? Yeah. But for Quarter 1, what we're saying is choose your one Anchor Offer for Quarter 1. Does that resonate with you, Becky?
Becky Brown 18:55
Oh, absolutely. Because my Anchor Offer also like shifts. So I would say actually one of my Anchor Offers is a little bit like a little bit more abstract for this category. But is SEO income, like I get Google traffic still, and that has been like a big thing for me over all these years. And even though that's not necessarily my top priority, moving into 2026, it is still a steady income earner for me, and it's still something important. So anyways, okay, let's move on to Anchor Number 2, which is your visibility rhythm. So once again, this can look so different for everybody, but this is the the consistent, the doable, the simple things, whatever, whatever you're doing that gets you and your offers and what you're doing in front of real humans. That's what we're talking about in your visibility rhythm, yes. Can you talk about like this is something that you do very, very, very well. So I want you to tell them what you do.
Laurie Graham 19:42
I'd love to talk about it now. My ADHD brain would not naturally lead me to have good consistent visibility rhythm. The reason I have good consistent visibility rhythm is because of my daughter, Maggie, who has made me and forced me and pushed me, and because I have a team that needs me to create the things, because they have a system to put them up. I mean, really, that's what it is. It's true. I started the Small Church Ministry Podcast January 2022, we have not missed a weekly episode since we started, and that's because of Maggie.
Becky Brown 20:26
Well, and you that was a huge goal. When you started out, you said, there are all these other things that I feel irresponsible in. I'm hit, I miss, I have all this inspiration, and then I don't follow through. This is something you said from day one, I will not I'm choosing not to miss a podcast, and you had lots of good, valid reasons to miss podcasts.
Laurie Graham 20:45
Yeah, you're right, and I have missed other things along the way, yeah, but that has been one of my most consistent and that is a visibility thing for me. I don't make money, direct money on my podcast, but I do get a lot of new people finding me because of the podcast. Another thing I'll speak to with rhythm, because it doesn't have to be big, it doesn't have to be loud, it doesn't have to be doesn't have to be a podcast like I also do weekly quotes, again, for my other business is what I'm talking about here, not just Smart Soulful Business, because I think I really want to be able to talk about our other businesses on the side, because we know that you're listening from all sorts of different edges. So I do a quote weekly on a Sunday with a blurb that leads to that podcast. But I just sat down last night and did the next six or seven. And again, we talk about batching, because if I had to come up with a quote every week, there's no way I could do it. I literally would be like, what? Where does that happen? And so I batch it. I batch it ahead of time, and I spent a couple hours, because those quotes are important to me. They represent who I am. They represent not just my brand, but me. Like I want it to fit. And so that's another way I get in front of real people. And I will say consistency beats creativity. I'm not always in love with every podcast episode or every quote I put out, but that consistency has been gold for me. And again, I was pushed into that by my daughter, who is brilliant and a mastermind in so many entrepreneurial ways. She pushed me and thank you, Maggie. I know you're listening right now because you're probably editing this podcast episode, but she pushed me into that, and I am grateful. And Becky, you push me into that. But the visibility rhythm, again, is consistent. Keep it doable. Keep it as simple as you need to keep it but I would say a weekly consistency is pretty darn important, and you may be beyond that where you're doing a few different things weekly, but it doesn't need to be loud. It just needs to be regular. And consistency beats creativity when it comes to growth, every single time. Consistency beats creativity. Yeah, that's huge. Okay, I just kind of went on a tangent.
Becky Brown 22:45
No, it's important. It's important. Okay, Anchor Number 3 is your supportive systems. So this is a system, one system we're talking about here. You have lots of systems in your business. This is one system that will remove friction and lighten your load this quarter. So this could look a lot of different ways. We have a bunch of things specifically listed in the Action Guide that can be possible systems that you use in your business, but think about the things that help you keep your focus on your main things, but keep all that other busy work kind of stuff going in the background. And so, yeah, I mean, like, one cleaned-up system, and you and I have talked about this recently. Like, it takes more time to stop and work and improve these systems, but it can save you dozens of hours and so much focus in the new year, and this is something we talk about often. Laurie and I talk about our future selves often, like your future self will thank you for cleaning up this system now, instead of waiting.
Laurie Graham 22:46
Yeah, and without taking time to do our systems, I know this. I still have things that don't have systems that I'm actually doing right now, and spinning my wheels over. It adds to our suffering later. Like absolutely, we think, Oh, I don't want to take the time. But if we think, okay, if I don't have a system, it's really going to add to my suffering. It's going to add to my time. And it really does. And let me just say this also, Becky and I, we're really we're trying to keep these episodes down to 25 minutes, because we value your time. We know you're busy, we're also busy. And yet we choose things. We're probably going to go a little bit longer in this episode, just because I can tell we're already kind of at the time. But I just want to clarify that we're not telling you what your visibility rhythm choice should be for Quarter 1. We're not telling you what your supportive system should be. We're really encouraging you to pick one Anchor Offer. One visibility rhythm and one supportive system that you are going to work on and improve in Quarter 1, because we know this will change your business. This will change your outcome by choosing one, not by spinning over all the things you want to do, but choosing one. Can you imagine if in one quarter, in three months, we had these three things like improved or better or moving? So good. So Becky, give me a couple real-life examples of choosing these type of anchors in a way that feels doable, but not overwhelming.
Becky Brown 25:06
Yeah, and I'm just gonna say on this one, like, go, go back to what feels doable about it is sometimes when somebody tells you what to do. So we have put the wording on this for you, like, I am telling you I want you to go print the Action Guide right now and go write your answers. Laurie and I get so much clarity when we put words to these things that we're kind of already doing. And so that's what we did for you. We put words to it, we put an action guide to it. So all you have to do is go step by step, and if it takes some wrestling and some brainstorming, we want you to do it, because I'm going to bring back the clarity into the conversation, that clarity of, oh, this is the thing that I need to be talking to people about more this year, and I haven't really done that so far. Or this is the consistency I'm going to build in. And I do want to tell you, like I used to get more fuzzy when people would say, when business people would say that, Oh, just pick your one thing, whatever that looks like for your business. And I wish that we could sit down one-on-one with all of you, but that that's the point of our Soulful Strategy Group. If you are not in there, join our membership, because that's the place for that. Like, that's the place for you.
Laurie Graham 26:13
Just gonna say, we really will help you do that. Just, yeah, $9 a month, you guys. Like, it's the cheapest business kind of coaching thing you're ever gonna get. And, and I don't know, I think we show up well Becky.
Becky Brown 26:24
Oh yeah, yeah! And we're, and we're, we are there to help you wrestle through those things. Of, I don't even know where to start. What is my Anchor Offer? This is what my business looks like, like. We are the people to help you untangle that and just brainstorm back and forth and help you get the clarity that we're talking about here. So if you are feeling more fuzzy just listening to us speak vaguely and not tell you, Oh, post this many times on Facebook this week and you'll like, you'll win in Quarter 1, Soulful Strategy is where you want to be, That's where we can get more specific.
Laurie Graham 26:57
Yeah. And again, you don't need to figure this out perfectly. You just need to choose like. You just need to choose and move, learn and do, learn and do. We love talking about that so much. Sometimes, when we get stuck choosing to, it's not really because we're confused, it's just because everything feels important. I know for me that is so true, like everything feels important. It's not that I don't know what's important. It's like everything feels important. Yeah, Becky, do you want to speak to that just a little bit before we wrap up?

Yeah? So I think that is, yeah, that's another area where pre-planning and batching can save you a lot of headache, because you order your priorities before you're in it, if you're in it, if you're walking into a work day and you don't know what your plan is, then everything is going to feel important, because everything needs to be done, and everything will benefit your business. And it like, of course, of course, you get caught up in this whirlwind, because that is true. But if you can think before, if you can think one step ahead and have this intentional plan, which we're helping you with right now, right, this is your first step to creating your intentional plan. Have your priorities outlined, have a plan that aligns it, think ahead of time, and then walk into your day and do the things, execute the things, it helps prioritize your your business.

And I think stop re-deciding, because whatever we choose going into Quarter 1, if we work on it, improve it. If we change midway, we're never going to know, like, sometimes I read aside, or something else pops up. And I think for me, that's also really important.
Becky Brown 28:31
Yeah, and I think giving everything a fair shot and giving yourself permission to re-decide later on, but giving it a fair shot first, like investing the time in first, is important. So, okay, true. Anything else to say on this? Or can we bring this home right now? All right, okay, let's bring this home. You are closer to that, to that momentum, that clarity, that then you think. So here's what we covered today. You are not behind. Quarter 1 is another season, but it is not a sprint. What matters most here are deciding your three Anchors. Your Anchor Offer your visibility rhythm, and your supportive system for Quarter 1. If you choose these with intention, with purpose, everything else becomes optional, becomes flexible. This is important.
Laurie Graham 29:21
Yeah and Happy New Year. Like, my friend, Claudia Gross, who does a lot of business and life coaching, I learned this from her and and she almost with an eye roll. It's like most people don't have New Years. Like, we say Happy New Year, but we live the same year over and over again. Yeah. And it's so true. Like, how many people really create a new year? Like, we don't want to look back on the next year and say, Was it really, you know, we're saying Happy New Year, but we're gonna live the same year. Let's not do that. You know, in the next 48 hours, I'm gonna say 24 Becky, I just think people can do this in 24 hours. Choose your three Anchors for Quarter 1. Don't overthink it, just choose things that are going to create more movement, more clarity, more just, I don't know, going forward, and more ease, like Becky, and I talk about this a lot. We are not into pressure-filled businesses that are, you know, motivated by shame and failure, like and I think that's what pressure is, like, we're motivating ourselves by, oh my gosh, if we don't do this, we're gonna fail. Yeah, we're not. We don't want to do that at all. We're not putting that on you. We don't put that on ourselves. Like, let's move into more ease by making some steps to move forward,
Becky Brown 30:33
Ease and fun. I mean, what do you love about your business? Why are you doing it? Like, let that be part of your consideration too. What Anchor Offer do you just love right now that you can't wait to share with people?
Laurie Graham 30:43
