Please join us as we continue you with Bro. John "Ernie" Perez as he continues to teach us "A Simple Presentation into The Book of ACTS - Chapter 6". Growth brings pressure—and in Acts 6 that pressure becomes the doorway to greater power. We open with a real tension: Hellenistic widows are being overlooked in the daily distribution. Instead of spinning plates, the apostles protect their call to prayer and the word while inviting the community to choose seven trusted, Spirit‑filled servants. That simple act of clarity—character first, wisdom second, commissioning always—transforms a complaint into a catalyst. The word increases, disciples multiply greatly, and even priests are drawn into the faith.
From there, we follow Stephen, a non‑apostle whose life demolishes the myth that only platform leaders carry power. Full of faith and the Holy Spirit, he works signs and wonders, reasons with unanswerable wisdom, and faces a hostile council after false witnesses twist his words. The room watches his face shine like an angel’s, a quiet miracle that reveals how the Spirit steadies a person under fire. We talk about why some hearts soften under conviction while others harden, and how rejection doesn’t signal God’s absence but often confirms the impact of faithful witness.
Along the way, we draw out practical takeaways for churches and everyday believers. Daily discipleship matters more than big moments. Healthy structure is a trellis that helps spiritual life grow. Leaders must guard their devotion and empower others. Servants can carry miracles into ordinary spaces—homes, markets, workplaces—through simple prayers and open hands. If you’ve wondered how to resolve growing pains without losing your soul, Acts 6 offers a blueprint that blends order with outpouring and turns service into multiplication.

SPEAKER_01So we ended Acts chapter 5 with all 12 of the apostles on trial for their testimony of Jesus. Once again, the attention of the high priest and the Sanhedrin is focused on the apostles because of their use of the name of Jesus. You have to understand that the power of a name in that culture and what that represents. And the closest thing I can tell you is if you are sent to another country and you say to their dignitaries, I'm here in the name of President Trump, that name, that name moves other governments. Well, that was for family names could do that in in the book of Acts in Jewish culture. Family names, if some of you are maybe familiar with the movie Ben-Hur, that name, her, meant something. Judah Ben-Hur, Judah, son of her. The name of Jesus was attached to all that he was and all that he did. So this would always make the high priest, the Sanhedrin, this would be a huge insult to them. So to make matters worse, there were many, many undeniable miracles being done in the name of Jesus. Not only were they teaching and preaching that that Jesus was the Messiah, they were teaching and preaching he had risen from the dead, and that they had been commissioned by him to carry on the ministry, and then miracles were being done in the name of Jesus, and that was more than they could stand. The church is suddenly booming in growth. We find no spectacular buildings being erected. There are no promotional drives recorded. Not one of the apostles is mentioned as sponsoring a healing crusade. They just preach and teach the gospel and miracles and signs and wonders follow just like Jesus instructed and prophesied over them in Mark chapter 16, verses 15 through 20. These signs shall follow them that believe. Now, the apostles, notice they are not intimidation, excuse me, intimidated by the persecution. They are bold in their defense of the gospel. They're more in defense, they're in proclamation, they're on offense. They are bold in preaching the gospel. The Spirit of God convicted the high priest and the Sanhedrin through the testimony of the apostles so much that they come to arrest them. Notice how carefully the Jewish leaders responded to the conviction of the Holy Ghost. When you you look at Acts chapter 5 and 33, when they heard the proclamation, it says they were cut to their heart and took counsel together to slay them. You know, later on, I I would suggest you contrast that with Acts 237, because it's the same concept. It says, when they heard Peter, he was through preaching, he said, and then they were cut to their hearts, they were pricked in their hearts, and they said, Men and brethren, what shall we do? So the strength of conviction caused them to look inside and say, we need to know what to do about this. But the same spirit, same strength of conviction to the Sanhedrin and the high priest and their ilk was, we got to shut this down. Same spirit. You remember Jesus when he sent the apostles out by two, he said, where they receive you, let your peace be upon this house, and where they reject you, shake the dust off of your feet. It will be easier on Sodom and Gomorrah than it will for them on the judgment day. This God who is filled with love and mercy and compassion, when judgment falls, it will be equal to his love and mercy and compassion. You can also look at another scripture might want to consider Acts 10, 34, and 38, when you go back and rehash these things in your own heart and soul. So wherever souls are coming to Jesus, Satan panics and hatred will be on display. The church in the book of Acts is familiar with opposition. The apostles, they leave the courtroom and are beaten for the name of Jesus. Yet they rejoice that the word of God was fulfilled in their lives. I'll never read anywhere. You'll never find anywhere where, you know, the apostle said, beat me, beat me. Oh, I just love it. They were whipped and beaten with rods, and it's nothing like people see today. They were not embracing the pain. They were seeing the prophecies of Jesus Christ come to pass in their lives. He had told them, whatever it is they've done to me, they'll do to you. Well, they saw people lavish affection and praise and worship on Jesus, and they saw people murder Jesus. We ought not be surprised when the testimony of Jesus Christ upsets people. So Acts 5 ends with this testimony of faith, that daily in the temple and in every house they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ. It wasn't enough that they had a fantastic outpouring at Pentecost. Or if it was the next day or two or three days after, with the man at the gate called Beautiful was healed. There was another couple of thousand. It wasn't good enough for them. They determined to go from house to house daily, breaking bread and sharing the word of God. It should not be good enough for us that we have a place to go and worship. If we're following the pattern of the church in the book of Acts, thousands coming to Christ did not satiate their spiritual hunger. It was a daily thing. We should be in the word of God daily. Even if it's just five or ten minutes when you get up in the morning because you're hustling to work or whatever. Get the word of God into your heart. All right. So we're going to open up chapter six. We're going to read through the chapter. And then, as is our habit, we'll go back and give you my personal commentary on it. And I say this often, I don't consider myself the ultimate teacher or preacher or arbiter of the word of God. That's over there somewhere. But I just try to keep things simple and hope to build an appetite within our hearts for more of the word of God and to inspire you to enjoy the word of God. So let's go ahead and read. Now, if you're reading the King James Version, then it'll read verbatim, what I'm reading. If you're reading the New King James, it's super close. But what whatever version you have, we're just grateful you have a Bible. And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. Then the twelve called the multitude of the apostles unto them and said, It is not reason that we should leave the Word of God and serve tables. Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you, seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. But we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word. And the saying pleased the whole multitude, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip and Procorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenus, and Nicholas, a proselyte of Antioch, whom they set before the apostles, and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them, and the word of God increased, and the number of disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly, and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith. And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people. Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines and Cyrenians and Alexandrians, and of them of Sicily and of Asia, disputing with Stephen. And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake. Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God, and they stirred up the people, and the elders and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him and brought him to the council, and set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place and the law. And all that sat in the council, looking steadfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel. Now, let's go back and I'll begin reading again. I'll reread verse one and and I'll give you a little commentary in verse two, and then we'll make our way through. All right, and in those days when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. Now, what had happened was there were so many people who had come to Jerusalem. You'll read that if you've been following along, you've read this. There were 17 nations represented at Pentecost, 17 different languages. Not to mention how many pagans were living in Israel at the time because of past occupations and current occupations by other governments. Now, was these people converted? They had come only to experience Pentecost. The Jewish tradition, keeping the law, keeping Pentecost. But thousands were saved. Thousands came to repentance. Baptism in Jesus' name, infilling of the Holy Ghost. They couldn't just send them back home without some sort of training and discipleship. They had no place to stay. They came with money to stay, what? A week at the most? Stay through the feast of unleavened bread and sheep of first fruits and go home. But now, with this experience, this crowd that comes through Jerusalem is suddenly looking to hang around. Well, they had to be fed, they had to be housed. So we remember believers were selling everything they had, many of them, bringing it to the apostles' feet, and they were using that money to feed people who could not feed themselves who were there. They were not feeding all of Jerusalem. They could have never done that. They were feeding those who had come to Christ and needed a help so that they could stay. They needed a helping hand so they could stay and be taken care of spiritually as well as physically. So now a great gathering of souls is happening. The number of disciples is multiplying. This is the pattern from Acts 2 and 3. The demonstration of Holy Ghost power with powerful teaching, powerful preaching, testifying, and discipleship daily. Not on Sunday and Wednesday, not on the Sabbath. Daily. Something's got to happen when we're away from the building on a consistent basis. House to house daily. Let it begin in your own house. Break open the word of God, discuss it, talk about it. Who knows who God will send or will send you to, that you might be able to minister to them. The church sees the need to help support those in need, and they get after it. All right, now the Grecians, who are they? The Grecians are people who have converted to Judaism first. Many of them are proselytes, and many of them are just Jews who, because of the influence of Alexander the Great and the scriptures, Old Testament scriptures being written and translated into Greek, they happen to use that translation. So they are called the Grecians. The purist, they would not be doing that. There were some Jews who just didn't like that. There were others who just embraced it. But historically, Alexander the Great had a key part. He was used by God to make the world ready to receive the gospel because he made Greek the language of educators throughout his conquested countries. The Romans saw that was a good idea, so they didn't change it. But it made Paul able to preach to all these other countries who didn't understand Hebrew or Aramaic. He brought them the language they learned in school. Nothing has happened in the world in government that hasn't somehow benefited the plan of God. Nothing. So the the Grecians felt like some of their people, especially the widows, were being neglected or not treated as well as as those who were not Grecians, as those who were bloodline Jews. And this was problematic for the church. Verse 2. Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. You know, one of the worst things we do in our culture is demand the pastor be a skilled businessman. Because it takes time to acquire that skill. And they have to dedicate themselves to that sometimes as much or more than they can dedicate themselves to other things. The apostle said, We're not taking care of the business. We're not doing it. It's not reasonable. Let's look at that again. Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. Would to God that every pastor had a sufficient board, five, six, seven, however many, that could handle the business end of the church. Because many a pastor has grayed early and stressed out early, because they have to be everything besides the pastor. When there are people in the church who have the skill and can be anointed. And if you wonder about that, that pattern is set when God says to Moses, I've put on these certain men a spirit of wisdom that they might make all the articles that are needed in the temple. Moses and Aaron and all the Levites were not required to do that. God anointed people to do that. We have anointed people in our congregation. God give us a sensitivity to know who they are and to lay hands on them for that anointing to be activated. Notice the apostles dress the situation with, it is not reason that we should leave the word of God for other obligations. These are not our obligations. It is not reason that we should leave the word of God to serve tables. And listen, coming up in ministry, I cleaned the restrooms. I scrubbed the church. I washed dishes at the camp meeting. And I was not Joe Handyman, but I followed around the handyman and carried tools and helped him do things. A minister is first a servant. Romans chapter 1, Paul opens his letter with Paul, a servant. And then he said he was an apostle. So don't think that you're going to be in ministry if you are not ready to serve in the kingdom and serve the needs of others. Minister. Minister is not really a noun, it's a verb. All right, I'm getting distracted here. So here's my paraphrase of the rest of the apostles' response. You all take care of this issue. Search among you, among you for seven men. Full of the Holy Ghost. That's a requirement. Be baptized in the Holy Ghost. And wisdom. They got to know what they're talking about. Choose men that live a life that gives a genuine testimony of Jesus and bring them to us. You choose them, you bring them to us, and we will appoint them over this business. So there was still spiritual authority, but they trusted the disciples to be able to look among themselves and agree. Yeah, these people got the goods. This one, this one owns his own business. This one's highly educated. This one here is a physician. This one here is a skilled carpenter. They pick people who are knowledgeable in life. Do that. We'll put them over this business. We will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word. We have just read about the priority of apostolic ministry. The seven that took care of the business, it was appointed for them to do it. It was, hey, we need to lay hands on them. We need to pray over them. They can be anointed to do this. They don't need to be just anybody willy-nilly. They need to be people who can be dedicated to a cause. People who can accept responsibility. Look, you don't just let anybody take care of your babies. You want somebody that you think is mature, can babysit my child. Well, the babies in Christ. We don't want to feed them to just anybody. But we won't find those people if we don't pray them in, if we don't look for them, and then we've got to believe in them. We got to lay hands on them. We got to pray over them and we got to believe in them. And if they're not up to the task, then we have to pray over them and find something they are up to because they're showing they have a burden to do something. Let's help them find the right place to work in the kingdom. Now, I'm going to read verses three and four. But we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word. I'm sorry, wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business, but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word. How important is it that we understand the word of God? How can you give out that which you do not have within? So then, what do we do with young disciples who've just come to Christ? The most powerful word and testimony that they have? Tell people what Jesus did for you. You don't have to defend doctrinally what Jesus has done for you. You don't have to be a master of scripture to say, God answered my prayers in this way. God opened these doors for me. God met my needs like this. Show them that Jesus is active in your life. You are not required to have a doctrine of divinity in order to be useful in the kingdom of God. But you do need to give yourselves continually to prayer and keep yourself in the word. Verse 5. 6 and 7. And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose of, excuse me. And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man, full of faith and of the Holy Ghost. Isn't that what the apostles told them to do? Full of faith and of the Holy Ghost. And Philip and Procorus and Nichanor and Timon and Parmenus and Nicholas, a proselyte of Antioch, whom they set before the apostles, and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them. And the word of God increased, and the number of disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly. And a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith. So the whole multitude saw this was the right solution. They chose the seven men, they found men full of faith and full of the Holy Ghost, and they brought them to the apostles. We have them named here. Pay attention to the fact that Stephen and Philip are at the top of the list because we're going to read about them later. And remember, they're not apostles. Stephen and Philip are not apostles. None of these men are apostles. At most, they're what we would call deacons in the church. The whole multitude saw this was a good solution. They brought to the apostles these men. Then after the apostles prayed over them, they laid hands on them and commissioned them to the task. This action, pulling them out from the rest of the saints, laying hands on them, commissioning them to the task, evidently led to an increase in both the Word of God and the number of disciples in Jerusalem multiplied exponentially. I have heard men and women of God laboring in ministry at this time saying, you know, I've been laboring all this time. Where are the results? Well, this is what I would say. Are we following this pattern? Does it mean we don't have real desire? Does it mean we don't have a real anointing or a real calling? Are we following the pattern that was established in the book of Acts? Who's going from house to house daily? Who wakes up in the morning and says, hey, let's get in the Word of God? Who's praying for people in the grocery store? At the gas pump? At the restaurant? Who's saying to your neighbor, hey, good to see you? How are you doing today? And just having conversation. Conversation gives people a chance to feel the spirit that's working within you. You don't have to knock them over. With you need to repent right now before you go to hell. You need to knock them over with the love of God. And when they're impacted with the Spirit of God, you'll have the opportunity to talk to them about repentance, faith in God, water baptism, the promise of the Holy Ghost. Just because you are not seeing thousands come to Christ does not mean you are not being used and that you don't have an anointing. People like you. There are people who like you, unsaved people who would love to talk with you. Just have a conversation. The first day you don't have to tell them everything about Jesus. Build that relationship. And disciples will be greatly multiplied and added to the church. Not everyone I've ever befriended has come to Christ. But people who have come to Christ have generally been our friends first, Mama. They were our friends first. And we played Uno and Skipbo and talked with them and built. Now, the number of disciples multiplied exponentially when the church got their business in order. Isn't that something? God is concerned with us having things in order. He's a God of order. He does all things in decency and order. Have faith. People talk to you every day. Those of you're listening to this podcast, you're seeing this. Let me tell you something. Nobody is loved by Jesus more than you are. Nobody. Take advantage of the fact that He loves you. And that you are important in the kingdom of God. You have your place in the kingdom. You can find it and you can work in it. God will show you. So from here we'll focus on two of the seven men chosen. The first man we're going to look at is Stephen. Alright, so we're going to read now verses eight, nine, and ten. And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people. Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines and Cyrenians and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen. And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake. Some commentators think Stephen was a young man, like between 17, 30, somewhere in there. Not aged in wisdom necessarily. But he had great wisdom in the Word of God. Stephen is thought to have been by some maybe 17 or 18 years old only. I don't know how scholars come to this conclusion, but Luke notes Stephen is full of faith and power. And he did many great wonders and miracles. Note Stephen was not an apostle. Mark chapter 15, verses 16, on to the end of the chapter. These signs shall follow them that believe. Stephen is one of them that believe. Now this power is moving beyond demonstration from the apostles into the life of Stephen. Stephen's ministry greatly frustrated, particularly Jews from a certain synagogue. It is thought that these Jews were possibly formerly slaves, made to fight in Roman wars, as one commentator says, that this service resulted in them being awarded their freedom. And they were greatly influenced by Roman and Greek culture, but they were Jews who had become free people. In other words, Roman citizens. There was such a large number of these Jews, they formed their own synagogue, the synagogue of the libertines, of the liberated. Then they, you know, listen, they had problems within Judaism, just like within Christianity, you know, some churches don't get along. And the big problem for them was they were either proselytes to the Jewish faith, not bloodline Israelis, but proselytes to the Jewish faith, some of them. And all of them used what is known as the Septuagint, the Greek translation of scriptures. Hence the moniker, Grecians. Now, there was such a large number of these Jews, they formed their own synagogue. They were continually not able to deal with the ministry of Stephen. His wisdom and his logic was too much for them. And then on top of that, many miracles and signs and wonders were being done. And how would he have done that? In the name of Jesus, Jesus said, In my name, they shall cast out, in my name they shall do these things. It should be a natural understanding for us that Stephen did these things in the name of Jesus. And it really frustrated these people. So the same anointing that was on Peter in Acts chapter 2, that caused people to look up and say, Men and brethren, what shall we do? is on Stephen. But instead of saying, What shall we do? they get that same anointing and it frustrates them because their conscience does not want to yield to the will of God. That's one of the biggest problems with people not coming to God. I don't know how many times I've had somebody that I was witnessing to look at me and say, Well, why do I have to do it that way? I'm serious. I said, Well, I don't make the rules. God make the rules. Lately he hasn't asked me, did any of them need a changing? God doesn't need our suggestions. And we're gonna tell him, you do things differently and I'll serve you. He that created all that is existent today, he who is infinity, he who was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself. We're gonna tell him, you need to do things my way. Just try that, walking in the White House with any president. Forget the one we have now. Try that with presidents past, walk in and telling them, no, I don't I don't want this desk here anymore now. You move it. What's that, Audia? It's not happening. Not happening. I know sometimes people reject Christ. They rejected him in the book of Acts. We forget about the rejection and the persecution and the suffering that went on, and we focus on all the miraculous, wonderful events, acting like the other things didn't happen. And then when they do happen, we think God isn't with us. That's a lie. That's proof that the enemy is afraid of you, trying to discourage you. God didn't love Job any less than he loved anyone else. But it made Satan irate that Job could keep his testimony under such circumstances. Don't think that walk living living with Jesus is a is a walk in the park. It's a cake. Sometime you should get in the Corinthian letter and read Paul's testimony about his ministry, about his apostleship, and the beatings, and the times he was left for dead, and the times he was robbed, left on the highway, stoned, whipped with rips and rods, and shipwrecked, and running from Jewish assassins as well as highway robbers. But we think if the man of God, if the woman of God doesn't have a big building and a big following, they're not anointed. Paul, when he started talking about that, he said, he told the Corinthians, I sound like a fool now talking about this. Why? Because the power is in Christ. That's how we survive. The power is in Christ. That's how they survived. Reading verses 11 through 14. Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God. And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him and brought him to the council, and set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place in the law. For we have heard him say, This Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us. Have we ever seen lies like that in Scripture before? In an effort to stop the influence of the Holy Ghost that was manifested through the ministry of Stephen. They hired certain men to bring false accusations against him. Does this remind you of Jesus? Jesus told the disciples, whatever they've done to me, they'll do to you. The servant is not greater than his Lord. They brought Jesus before Caiphas and Annas and Herod and Pilate and told lie after lie about him. And when they could not validate the lies, finally Jesus was asked the question Are you the Son of God? He said, You say I am, and when you see me coming in power again, you'll sing a different song. Then they said, Ah, we got him. His own words. Look, this is perjury. Stephen is being taken. Instead of going to jail, they take him right to the courtroom. We got the kangaroo court happening here. We're gonna nail your hide to the wall, Stephen. Why? Because he preached the love of Jesus Christ, because he preached the value of repentance, water baptism, infilling of the Holy Ghost, because he was evidently laying hands on people, and many signs and wonders and miracles were being done. And you know what? He doesn't even list all what they were, just as many. Finally, verse 15. And all that sat in the council looking steadfastly on him saw his face as it had been the face of an angel. Everybody that was sitting on the council and in that courtroom looked at him and saw something miraculous on his face. His face became the face of an angel. But you know what? The miracles did not move them because they worshiped themselves. They couldn't see the miracle that was in front of them. They saw Stephen's face that it became like an angel, but it did not move their hearts. Some people, miracles just won't matter. Well, that ends chapter six. It was a briefest chapter in the book of Acts. And next next week we'll be back with uh Acts chapter seven. And I really thank you for spending this time with us. The Lord bless you. May you be so blessed by Jesus that you become the source of blessing in the lives of others.
SPEAKER_00All right. Hope everybody enjoyed that. I was just surprised because it was so short. We've been doing so many parts per each chapter.
SPEAKER_01So well, there was only 15 verses in this chapter.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Well, I would, you know, I want to continue. I want to continue QA after this. Okay. If since we've got Brother Mark and we've got uh Sister Sheila, Sister Patty, everybody's here today. And and I just think what maybe we could do a little QA.
