Simple Discipleship - UNFILTERED
The Gospel of St. John - Chapter 1, Part 1 - Bro. John "Ernie" Perez
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Recorded as curriculum for our new E3 School of Ministries, join Bro. Ernie as we dive into The Gospel of St. John. John’s opening line is not gentle. It grabs you by the collar: “In the beginning was the Word.” We sit down in a simple classroom-style Bible study and walk straight into John 1:1-18, letting Scripture define Scripture as we look at who Jesus is before we ever get to the manger, the miracles, or the cross.
We talk about why John’s Gospel feels different from the other three and how his perspective pushes us toward the divinity of Christ, not just the biography of Jesus of Nazareth. Then we give you four down-to-earth tools for Bible interpretation you can actually use: the principle of first mention, reading for context, complete mention across related passages, and praying while you practice listening for God’s guidance. No intimidation, no gatekeeping, just a clear path for deeper Christian discipleship.
From there we trace “the Word” as God’s communicated concept and eternal plan, using Jeremiah 1 to show how “the word of the Lord” comes as meaning and mission, not merely vocabulary. We connect John’s prologue to Revelation 13:8 and Acts 2 to highlight God’s foreknowledge, then anchor the claim with Colossians 1: Jesus as the image of the invisible God and the One through whom creation holds together.
We also wrestle with one of the most striking themes in Scripture: light before the sun in Genesis 1, and Jesus later saying, “I am the light of the world” in John 8:12. If you’ve wanted a Gospel of John Bible study that is both reverent and practical, this is your next listen. Welcome To Simple Sunday Unfiltered
SPEAKER_01Hey y'all, welcome to Simple Sunday Unfiltered. I'm your host, Sister Diamond. Thank you so much for joining me on this journey today. It's not always easy. But you are let's open the word and see what Jesus has to say today.
Classroom Setup And Guests
SPEAKER_01Hey, welcome to Simple Discipleship Unfiltered. I'm your host, Sister Diane. It's so good to have you with us today. We're in our classroom setting again with uh brother John Ernie Perez. How are you?
SPEAKER_00I'm good this morning. Thank you very much.
SPEAKER_01How are you doing, Mama? I am blessed today. And Sister Audia.
SPEAKER_00Good morning.
SPEAKER_01All right. So we don't have the whole crew here because we're just doing this intimate setting to get this study for Saint John, a simple presentation of that book, right?
SPEAKER_00Amen.
SPEAKER_01So grateful to have you come and share your wisdom with us, and we're so grateful for you. Do you want to do a little recap and then we'll go into the word? So ahead.
Why John Writes This Gospel
SPEAKER_00What we had done simply was the introduction. I wasn't prepared to go over the introduction again, so give me a moment. What we talked about, the the date, the scholars are uncertain of the date. We referenced the the fact that it is a hor historical document. And from my perspective, we're going to see in John's writing and confirmation that the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is revealed in and through his only begotten Son, Jesus of Nazareth. The purpose is to declare the truth, that to believe in Jesus according to Scripture is what needs to happen in our lives. And not to believe in a Jesus that is created in the minds of various philosophers. The Jesus that's declared in the Word of God. And so we're looking at John's perspective. And to me, it's always been very powerful and beautiful. Scholars suppose that John was 15 to 18 years old when Jesus called him to be a disciple. He is thought to be the youngest of those called by Jesus. And I could see that youthfulness in John on the night of the Last Supper when he laid his head upon Jesus' chest. I mean, men just don't do that to each other, grown men, but a young boy doing that to his dad, his uncle, his older brother, that I can clearly see. And so I've always interpreted that as relative to his youth. John wrote five books in the New Testament. They're the Gospel of St. John, first, second, and third John, and finally the revelation of Saint John Divine. It is the last book in your Bible. Now, when you have questions about interpretations as we go through this book, I'm not going to reference a lot of Greek and Aramaic and those type of things because I want you to understand that God can speak to you no matter where you're from, and that he can use the word of God to guide you by his spirit.
Four Rules For Bible Study
SPEAKER_00So I'm going to give you four simple rules to guide your study. When you're reading the Word of God alone, you're prayerfully looking to understand God's word. So when you have questions about interpretation, first you use the principle of first mention. That is, if it's what you think is symbolic, then you look at how this language was used the very first time in Scripture. And whatever the intent was at that time, whatever the symbolism was at that time, it remains constant from there to the end of Scripture. Then you would use the principle of context. So we would consider that. Because there are various covenants with different components to the covenants that apply to different people. We are not under the covenant of Moses. We don't live that law. So there are things that apply strictly to the covenant of Moses, promises that applied strictly to Abraham. And so we want to know which covenant is it under? Who wrote it? Who wrote it down? To whom was it written, or for the benefit of who? Why was it written to them? And then, you know, it's a good idea, just get in the habit. It's not enough to use a single scripture to formulate a doctrine. You want to read everything that came before it and everything that came after it. Sometimes just going back two or three verses and reading through two or three verses beyond, sometimes you'll need to go back and read an entire chapter or read the introduction of a book to remind yourself of why it has been written. And then we'd use the principle of complete mention. That is verifying the meaning of a statement by using all similar or related scriptures. So obviously, this takes a little effort, but you don't have to be a theologian to do this. You don't have to study Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, although those are wonderful tools. And if you have the opportunity, by all means dive into them. But if you don't, God knew that the disciple was for or the gospel was for the whole world, that disciples would come from every ethnicity. And he is able to communicate to you in your language also. But if you if you have the ability to get those other tools, enjoy it. You will enjoy it. But if you don't, do not despair. God is still a prayer answering God. And finally, verse four, or point number four, always pray and ask for guidance when you're delving into the word of God. You want to learn anything. And then after you've prayed, practice listening. And listening takes practice. You ask any married couple, they talk to each other for years sometimes before they develop the skill of listening. Listen to understand. Don't listen with the idea that I'm gonna prove my point. Don't listen with the idea that I'm gonna prove someone else's wrong or I'm gonna make the scripture say what I want it to say. Listen with the goal of understanding. And if you will approach your study of God's word in that capacity, in that fashion, you will find in your experience with God that He knows how to communicate with you. He knows how to speak to you, not only in dreams and visions, but sometimes the written word can just jump off of the pages of Scripture and into your heart, and you can know this is an answer from heaven. Sometimes it'll be in teaching or preaching, or maybe a Christian author that you read after, or maybe a brother or sister will testify, but God will send you an answer. So please remember when you pray, we we want to be careful and not treat God like Santa Claus. And we're just here to tell you everything we want, because we've been somewhat good or very good or not rotten, not good at all, but rotten. No, we're here, Lord, because we love you and we want to hear from you. We want to honor you as the creator, as the redeemer, as the king of our lives. So we want to learn, to listen for the Spirit of God. The scripture in the book of Revelation, all seven churches. God had John write at the end of every little note to every church, he that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. We want to cultivate an ear to hear what the Spirit is saying to us as we study God's word. And so with that, that would be all of the recap I have for the introduction. And we're getting ready to dive right into the lesson. Okay, is everyone good to go?
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00I can't hear you shake your heads. Yes. Yes, thank you. All right, so I'm gonna read the first 18 verses of the Gospel of
Reading John 1:1-18 Aloud
SPEAKER_00St. John, chapter 1, and then we'll go back as is our habit, and we'll give you a personal commentary. Confessing. Confessing. I am not the ultimate wisdom in the Word of God. It's far greater than I am, and you can find better and brighter teachers, but just giving you my best and asking you to pray over it and to use it as a springboard in your personal studies. John chapter one. In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men, and the light shineth in the darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness to bear witness of the light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of that light. That was the true light which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not, but as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name, which were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the word was made flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John bare witness of him and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake. He that cometh after me is preferred before me, for he was before me, and of his fullness have all we received and grace for grace. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. No man hath seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. Okay, so we're gonna go back and read some verses and talk about them as we go. Sometimes we'll read one verse, sometimes we'll read two or three, but we'll start off with John 1 and
“The Word” From Genesis Forward
SPEAKER_001. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Now, when John opens his gospel or the personal testimony of his life with Jesus, his mind immediately connects to Genesis 1 and 1. And John repeats exactly what you find in Genesis 1 and 1 in the beginning. So rather than talk about when I first met Jesus, he goes back and snatches terminology from the very first book of the Bible and creation, and he says regarding Jesus in the beginning. Only John does not continue with God. Instead, John writes, was the word. In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God. So John does not just continue with God, he uses the term the word. And by my simple understanding, his use of this language, word, in this particular fashion, should be rendered in our mind as concept. As when you hear someone say, What's the word for the day? In other words, what are we planning for today? That's a culturalism that you would hear in our day. Now, there is a great deal written about the Greek language and its use of this term word. So, not going into all that, I'll explain to you just using scripture why I say that the term concept is how we should understand and explain the usage of word here in Scripture. John using the term in the beginning was the word. So I'm going to start by pointing us to the book of Jeremiah. So
Jeremiah Shows “Word” As Concept
SPEAKER_00I want you to turn with me to Jeremiah chapter one. We're going to talk a little bit about what's here. Remember, both Jeremiah and John are Jews, even though it's from history, it's the same culture. In Jeremiah chapter 1, the term word is used four times, four times at least. And we're going to look at verses two, four, eleven, and thirteen. So let me just read it through. The words of Jeremiah, the son of Hilkiah, of the priest that were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, to whom the word of the Lord came in the days of Josiah, the son of Ammon, the king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign. It came also in the days of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, king of Judah, unto the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah, the son of Josiah, king of Judah, unto the carrying away of Jerusalem, captive in the fifth month. Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Before I formed thee in the belly, I knew thee, and before thou cameest forth out of the womb, I sanctified thee. And I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. Then said I, Ah, Lord God, behold, I cannot speak, for I am a child. But the Lord said unto me, Say not I am a child, for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak. Be not afraid of their faces, for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord. Then the Lord put forth his hand and touched my mouth. And the Lord said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth. I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build and to plant. Moreover, the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an almond tree. Then said the Lord unto me, Thou hast well seen, for I will hasten my word to perform it. And the word of the Lord came unto me the second time, saying, What seeest thou? And I said, I see a seething pot, and the face thereof is toward the north. What am I saying here in Jeremiah? Each time the prophet received a word from God, it wasn't a written word, as in a letter or a telegram that was written and sent to him. It wasn't a word like go is a word, like bill is a word, or like high is a word. It was expressive of a concept that God wanted Jeremiah to understand and to communicate to the people who he would affect with his prophetic ministry, verse 2 of Jeremiah 1, to whom the word of the Lord came. What the word of the Lord came. And as we go on each time, verse 4, then the word of the Lord came. Each time, this is a concept that is communicated to Jeremiah, that he is supposed to communicate to the Jews. The word of the Lord came, verse 11 and verse 13, the word of the Lord. So when we say in the beginning was the word, we're not meaning that the word is, as in some translations, some people will tell you that's a person. But it wasn't a person, it was a concept, it was an idea that was being communicated. So God informs Jeremiah of his purpose, speaking through Jeremiah, God says, I ordain thee a prophet unto the nations. Jeremiah verse 1 and 5, you need to understand the anointing that I'm giving you. The ministry of prophecy that I'm giving you. There is a concept for you to function under Jeremiah. So each time the word is used, it is relative to these concepts. This was the word that was in the beginning and was with God and was God. Look at verse 1 again of John chapter 1. In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God. Whatever concepts are in your mind right now, they are with you. They are not separate entities from you, they are a virtual extension, portion of yourself, of your identity, of your person. This is the word that was in the beginning, that was with God and was God. The complete concept of the eternal God, then, is revealed in the word that was with God and was God. This word, this concept, was with God in the beginning. Look at Revelation chapter 13.
Foreknowledge And The Lamb Slain
SPEAKER_00We'll turn there quickly. And if you can hear the pages of my Bible turning, I I used to say when I was speaking from the pulpit, I love the sound of the pages turning in a Bible. It means someone's picking up God's holy word. And delving into it. I still love it. All right, Revelation chapter 13 and verse 8. In the midst of John's vision, there is a word spoken, and all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, relative to the beast, whose names are not written in the book of life of the lamb slain from the foundation of the world. Now the foundation of a house is its beginning. Jesus was the lamb slain from the time the world began. That's what I'm telling you. Accordingly, the concept of Jesus, the only begotten Son of God, the crucified, risen, Savior, and Messiah, was already an established reality at creation in the beginning of time. We see it also not only in Revelation 13 and 8, but let us look at Peter's preaching in Acts chapter 2. And we're going to pluck out of his sermon something in particular he says about Jesus. He said several things, but we're going to focus on this thing. And we're going to look at verses 22 through 24. Peter says to the crowd there in Jerusalem, Ye men of Israel, hear these words. Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you, by miracles and wonders and signs which God did by him. In this case, by is just as good as through. It denotes agency, which God did through him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know. Him, Jesus, that is, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God. God thought about it, God molded over, just like you take counsel with yourself when you think what you're going to do with the rest of the day. You're alone in your room putting together your thoughts. Who's giving you counsel? Yourself. God, according to his determinate counsel and foreknowledge, ye have taken and by wicked hands have crucified and slain whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. It was decided in the mind of God. Before there was conception in the womb of Mary, before anything else was created, according to the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God. Before time. Now let's look at verse 2 in John chapter 1. The same was in the beginning with God. The same idea, thought, concept, and plan was established from the foundation of the world. It was in the mind of God and spoken into existence. The concept of Jesus, the only begotten Son of God, was established in the mind of God at the very foundation of the world. I've hit that nail several times because I want you to meditate on it. I want you when you read the scripture to think on it. Look at verse 3. All things were made by him. And without him was not anything made that was made. All things were made by him. People tend to think of that as a potter making things out of clay. That with his hands he made. How about through him? Through Christ. And without the foundation of Christ, without him was not anything made that
Creation Through Christ In Colossians
SPEAKER_00was made. Now, if you look, you compare these translations: the King James Version, the English Standard Version, the Tree of Life version, the Amplified Version, and the American Standard Version. And you will find that by and through him is an excellent interpretation, not by me, but of translators. And now let's look at Colossians 1, 15 through 19 and see did Paul talk about this at all. Paul writing to the Colossian church, chapter 1, speaking of Jesus, he writes, Who is the image of the invisible God? God is invisible and he fills all time and space. So then, how do we see the invisible God? He created for himself an image. And that image was Christ. That means that Adam wore the image of God before God wore the image himself. Let's keep reading and see if I see if I'm giving you good instruction. For by him or by through, or for through him were all things created that are in heaven, that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, dominions, or principalities or powers. All things were created by, that is, through him, for him. And he is before all things. How does that happen? And by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body. We understand that. The church. Who is he who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he might have preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fullness dwell. That is, there is a complete and total revelation in Jesus, who was the Word, who was with God in the beginning. This means, this by means by which a thing is accomplished, via. For example, I traveled via or through a tunnel. Therefore, I conclude that all things in creation were created in and through the concept of Jesus Christ. Jesus is correctly called the firstborn of all creation. Why is that? Because the first thing God created was the
Light Before Sun And Life In Christ
SPEAKER_00light. Let's go back to the book of Genesis. Chapter one. We'll read verses one through three. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth, and the earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God moved upon the waters. Well, where's the act of creation? Verse 3. And God said, Let there be light. And there was light, not sun, not moon, not stars. Light, not electricity, light. And God said, Let there be light. And God saw the light, that it was good, and the light divided, I'm sorry, and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light day, and the darkness he called night, and the evening and the morning were the first day. So what is the first thing that God create? What was it? It was light. We're going to study that Jesus is the light. Let's look at verse 4. In him was life. So then in Christ is all the life that was spoken into existence when fish and birds and mammals and reptiles came into existence. All life is from God. He spoke it into existence. It issued forth from his mind. This is the power of infinity, the eternal God. That's why you know people talk about how great it was that Peter walked on the water, but I really believe Peter walked on the words that Jesus spoke when he said, Okay, step out on the water and come to me. Where did he get the confidence to step out of the boat? From the words that Jesus spoke. They became a reality in his life as he walked on the water. Verse 4, in him was life, and the life was the light of men. Jesus is both the life and the light. All life comes from God. And this light that was created, there was no sun, moon, and stars until the third day. Now, we'll look at Colossians chapter three. And I'm going to read there verses one through four. If ye then be risen with Christ, this is what Paul is telling the church at Colossae, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affections on things above, not on things in the earth, for ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, this is what he tells the Colossian church, he is our very life. He is the essence of our being. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then ye shall also appear with him in glory. Not only will we see him as he is, but we will be as he is, because he is our life. And the fullness of that life will be on display. It will be revealed. Jesus is our life. 1 John chapter 5. I'm wanting you to see that this is a concept that runs through Scripture. It's not something we're just plucking out of one scripture and saying, this is how it works. This is throughout the Word of God. 1 John chapter 5. Same author, John the Beloved. Speaking of Jesus, he that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness on himself. He that believeth not God hath made him a liar, because he believeth not the record that God gave of his son. And this is the record that God hath given to us eternal life. And this life is in his son. The preposition here in here has great meaning. If we are in the house, we are not with the house. This life is in his son. He that hath the son hath life, and he that hath not the son of God hath not life. Life is in Jesus. We talked about the first thing that God created is light. We read that in Genesis 1, 3 through 5. We know that Jesus is the light of the world. John would go on to say this again. He would write it again in his gospel in John chapter 8. So we'll look at John chapter 8, verse 12. Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world. You know, when God said, Let there be light, Jesus is now claiming to be that light. That was the light of the world, not the sun, not the moon, not the stars. The light that God spoke into existence. Jesus is laying claim to that identity. I am the light of the world. He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. Back to John verse chapter 1, verse 4. In him was life. And the life was the light of men. So when God said, Let there be light, the concept of the Christ, child, the crucified risen Christ was manifested in the natural world by the obliteration of all darkness. What did Jesus do to our sin? He brought us out of darkness into his marvelous light. He is the light of the world. So he is the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. It was determined. We read in Acts chapter 2, Peter's statement, according to the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, this Christ was crucified and is risen from the dead. Everything about the Son of God was determined in eternity before time began. It was a concept in the mind of God. There is a doctrine that says Jesus is the unbegotten Son of God. That just won't fit with Scripture. He is the only begotten Son of God. Adam was the created Son of God. We are his descendants. We become the adopted sons and daughters of God. But Jesus is the only begotten Son of God, the only one who came via human pregnation and birth. As the revelation of God Himself, as the revelation of the light. Now, I'm gonna read verses five and six.
John The Baptist Witnesses The Light
SPEAKER_00And the light shineth in the darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God whose name was John. Okay. The light shined in the darkness. They just didn't have a clue who Jesus was. They thought he's the son of Joseph and Mary. He's a carpenter or a builder or an architect. He's a laborer, he's a common man. He aspires to be a rabbi, and so he has disciples who follow him around. No. He was the light shining in the darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not. The Pharisees and the scribes and the Sadducees and the Levites who were crooked, who were blinded by their own affluence and influence. They couldn't see who he was. They remained in darkness. Now there was a man who was sent from God whose name was John. John the Baptist is sent by God. For what purpose? To bear witness. To bear witness of that light. That is to testify of the light that is the life. So that all men might believe. Believe what? They were not to believe that John the Baptist was the word that was with God, that was God, that was the life, that was the light of men. This is what they must believe about Jesus. Just as a point, as as we're traveling on, back up to verse 1 of John for just a minute. If we read it and say it's true, in the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God, then it's just as true for us to read it this way. In the beginning was God, and God was the word. If the word was God, most certainly God was the word. Emphasizing that word here does not mean a spokesman, an individual entity standing next to God. You'll need to go through the book of Isaiah and and read how Isaiah prophesies about God and the Redeemer. That I just don't have time to go into all of this and keep with this lesson. But say from Isaiah 40 through 45, somewhere along there. So we'll we're beginning to wrap this up here with verse 6. John the Baptist was sent by God to bear witness to testify of the life that is the light. And we'll pick up, we'll read there from verse 6 through 8 when we come back. We'll reread verse 6 and we'll go from verses 6 through 8 and take care of that. I hope you've enjoyed this. I have a lot of fun doing it. I hope you're having just as much fun.
SPEAKER_01All right. So thank you so much. Well, that's a
Final Reflections And Ways To Support
SPEAKER_01powerful lesson right there. I was trying to do some other things over there, and I was like, oh my gosh, that's so good. Trying not to shout in the middle of the video, but so good. Man, when you when you see that that Jesus is the light, I you know, years ago I taught that on a Wednesday night uh prayer meeting thing, and everybody looked at me like, what? And I was like, Well, the light didn't come till several days later. So, what light do you think they were talking about? So I just I love that. I love that.
SPEAKER_00Excellent.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's exciting. I love the book of John and the St. John. It's just my one of my favorites.
SPEAKER_00So if uh there are any questions, we probably don't have time for questions and comments. I spoke quite a bit.
SPEAKER_01That's okay, it's okay. But it but it was a good, it's a really good study. Anyone have any comments that if you want to tag on here? It was a lot to comprehend, but it was it was it was it's deep for just those few verses that you went through. It's so deep because John does dive into the divinity of who Jesus is, and uh you know, outside of the other three gospels, he goes a little, he goes to the deep side.
SPEAKER_00So I think it's because of his unique relationship with the cross, where they all said to him on the Last Supper, when he said one of you is gonna betray me, they all said to John, you ask him who. Here's John, the youngest one in the bunch. We don't know if he's 12, 15, 17, but they're looking at him saying, These are grown men. You do it, he'll take it from you. You can do it.
SPEAKER_01But he but he has the purest heart. Why? Because he maybe because he is the youngest.
SPEAKER_00Because he has a childlike mentality.
SPEAKER_01That's what scripture tells us, right? Right.
SPEAKER_00In spite of his intellect, yeah, he knows how to come to Jesus as a child.
SPEAKER_01Just simple, just the simple. Oh, so good. Well, thank you, brother. Thank you so much. Looking forward to the next lesson. Thank you, mama, thank you, Audia, and thank you all for joining us. We're gonna leave you with our tagline today. Go show some love, show some compassion, give mercy and go be Jesus today.
