Welcome To Good Neighbor Podcast

SPEAKER_00

This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Susanna Hodges.

SPEAKER_02

Welcome. And with me is Dr. Susanna Cash with Lane Dermatology. Welcome, Dr. Cash. It's such a pleasure to have you.

SPEAKER_01

Hi, and you can just call me Susanna. My husband is a doctor, and I'm one of the PAs. Thank you. Yes.

Lane Dermatology’s Auburn Location

SPEAKER_02

Well, I'm excited to learn about Lane dermatology. So tell me a little bit about your practice there.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so Drs. Josh and Dr. Tandalane started lane dermatology in Columbus, Georgia, a long time ago, about 18 years ago. And they decided a couple of years ago to open up an Auburn location. And my husband, who is our main dermatologist of the office, and he and I have known the lanes for a very long time since my husband was in medical school, like 15 years ago almost. And so they we've stayed in touch and they opened up the Auburn location in October of 2024. And right now we currently have my husband is one of the main dermatologists there. Um Drs. Josh and Dr. Tanelaine also come every so often as as well. And then we have myself, one of the PAs there, and then we have another PA, Nicole Roberts, there, and possibly somewhere to come soon.

SPEAKER_02

Oh wow, it sounds like it's already growing. That's awesome. Yeah. How long have y'all had the location there? Uh since the end of 2024. Okay. All right. And that area that you're located in has just exploded with growth. Um, you have a really nice um office there. Where what is the address? It is 338 Sanford Village Court. Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, we love the area. There's a lot of businesses popping up, and it's good.

SPEAKER_02

It really uh it's been fun watching that um area grow because um it started out with just a few places and now it's full of apartments and uh offices and even some retail. And of course, bow and arrow is there and a great place to eat. So, and now there's a coffee shop uh right down the street. So you got everything you need, right?

SPEAKER_01

Absolutely, right.

Why Dermatology Is More Than Acne

SPEAKER_02

So tell me a little bit about your journey. What how did you get into dermatology?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so I've always been interested in medicine, of course, but mainly what's fascinating about dermatology is we're able to see all ages. So from the day you're born till the day you die, we see everyone. Um, we treat a lot of different things, it's not just one thing. And a lot of people think dermatology is just treating acne, and there's just a lot more to it. Um, we have to know a lot about every specialty to treat dermatology because certain GI conditions and heart conditions can present on the skin. And so we just have to know a little bit about all of it. So I liked the challenge in that regard. Um, but I also enjoy the fact that you can build long-term relationships with patients because it's not just a once-a-visit, it's we're seeing people on a regular basis and seeing them for yearly skin exams. And so I enjoyed all those aspects of it. It's always something different.

SPEAKER_02

Well, you've been in dermatology for a long time now. I'm sure you've come across some misconceptions people have, and you just addressed one about people thinking it's just about certain problems. But what are some of the others that you've come across?

Skin Cancer Myths And Real Risks

SPEAKER_01

Yes, people often think skin cancer is something that older people get, and that's not the case. Um, people often delay going to get their skin exams because they think it's going to be a waste of time for us and them. And that's not the case. Um, unfortunately, even though we are seeing less people using tanning beds, which is great, we are seeing a lot more skin cancers in younger patients. Um, in fact, the last month I had four or five 20-something year olds with melanoma. Um unfortunately, we are seeing a lot of that. And um, so it's important. So people often think, oh, you know, why do I need to go get my skin checked? But you do. And another thing that people think is skin cancer must be symptomatic. You know, it must be painful, it must hurt, it must bleed. And while those things can happen, it's not always the case. Um, most of the time, skin cancers are asymptomatic. Um, most of the time when we find them, people didn't even know they were there. So, especially melanoma. Um, unless that's very advanced, it doesn't, it doesn't bother people. It doesn't hurt it unless it's a very advanced type. But um, those are a couple of things.

SPEAKER_02

So oftentimes when you get a symptom, it might you it, you know, is it too late when you start feeling it or really?

SPEAKER_01

Not not necessarily, you know. Okay, good. Yeah, so yeah, I know the the most common types of skin cancers we see are actually they're not even melanoma, they're called basal cells and squamous cell carcinomas. They are very slow growing and they can be a little symptomatic, like they can bleed easily, but um good to get anything checked.

Family Life And A Big Move

SPEAKER_02

Well, tell me a little bit about yourself. What do you and your family look like to do for fun when you're not at work helping people with their skin problems?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so my husband and I, we have two young boys, and they're three, and the youngest is about to be two. So we're busy trying to entertain them. And um right now we're just trying to enjoy Auburn. We came from a bigger city in Memphis, Tennessee, and um, so going to moving from there to Auburn has been great to raise a family because there's so many fun things to do that are kid friendly and a lot of parks and all the sporting events, and so we're just trying to enjoy time in Auburn with them and um trying to save as busy as possible and get out and about.

SPEAKER_02

With that age, uh uh age range, yeah, y'all are y'all are pretty busy with those children.

SPEAKER_01

Yes.

SPEAKER_02

Now, part one reason I do this podcast is encourage people in their business and for people to go into business for themselves. And but you know, uh there's always gonna be a challenge, either personal or in your business when you're getting started. So, what are some of those things that you had to overcome in your life that helped you be a better person or your business stronger? Yes.

SPEAKER_01

Um, really, as of lately, the biggest challenge was we were we came from a very established practice in Memphis, Tennessee. We were both booked up for a while. We had our patients for over seven years there, and um we had our second baby and decided it was closer, it was better to get closer to family. Um, we were the only ones in Tennessee. Everyone else is over an hour away in noon in Georgia. So we made the decision to leave our established practice to join a brand new practice um in a new state, in a town we didn't know anyone to make it more of a challenge. My youngest was two weeks old when we decided to move. So I had a few session, we moved the next week. And so um that was a challenge. But um, it definitely was obviously well worth it. Auburn's great and we've been welcomed by the community and our patients, and um, we've really enjoyed it, but it was absolutely a challenging person.

SPEAKER_02

Sounds like it. Yeah. And you know, that's a you know, that's uh what a lot of people, you know, uh encounter when they're starting businesses. Maybe they have to move and they have to, you know, get used to a new place. So yeah, that is quite a challenge. But kudos to you for choosing Auburn because it is an awesome place to live, isn't it?

SPEAKER_01

It is. Oh my goodness, we love

One Stop Dermatology Services

SPEAKER_01

it.

SPEAKER_02

Well, thinking about your business, what is one thing that you wish uh people knew about Lane dermatology that they wouldn't necessarily realize?

SPEAKER_01

Yes, the main thing that I think makes us a little unique is we're kind of a one-stop shop. We try to be a full-service dermatology clinic. So not only do we treat all ages, so we take all pediatric patients as well, um, but we also um do not only general dermatology visits like skin exams and you know, treat all the various skin conditions, but we also do offer mo surgery as well as general excisions for skin cancers and for other benign lesions people may want removed. Um we also have a cosmetic um and an aesthetic department as well. So we have an aesthetician, Gwen, who's been in the field for over 30 years, and she's incredible. And um, we have a lot of different lasers and chemical peels and um products we can help out with too. So we try to have it all there that way. Yeah, and of course, we always you know do injectables as well from Botox and fillers and all that. So we're trying to just have it all there.

SPEAKER_02

Dermatology doesn't have to just be about fixing problems, it can be, you know, uh taking care of yourself. So in in those ways, you know, just preventative care and then just doing the things that make you look better and feel better about yourself.

SPEAKER_01

Absolutely, yes.
