hello. Hello. Welcome back. Reductive reviews. Okay. Okay. Welcome to Summer camp. Summer camp. The Live Easy. This is our camp episode. Lots of questions about whether we do camp or camp. Camp. In some cases, both turns out we decided, we've decided to do both. It's been a crazy month. Yes. Wait, what? Wait, you mean like of movies? Of movies, yes. Of movies. I was like and a life and maybe personally as well, but, and personally, especially movies. Right before this, I was telling you that I was super excited to get into talking about all of these movies because the theaters are full of bangers right now. The theaters are full of bangers and bangers. They're full of people. Shout out Alamo Draft House. Please consider sponsoring us. Okay. Shout out a MC. Okay. Shout please. Can I have been going to I think I counted like I went 10 times within a span of 14 days. Yeah. That's insane. Yeah. That's insane. I'm putting in numbers here. I don't think that a MC or Alamo Drafthouse realize how good their like season pass tickets. Yeah. Like how good of a deal that is. Alamo has a good one. Alamo has such a good one. You can see a movie a day for$30 a month. Yeah. I pay for two tickets a month. So that Christian and I can go together. It's$60 and we can see a movie every single day and we probably go three or four times a week. So we are in the theaters and, alamo don't change that deal because it's actually, it's so good. A MC opened up, it used to be three free movies a week. They just opened up to four free movies a week. Four$24. It's a month. Yes. That's, it's perfect. It's unbelievable. Like Empire 25 is right around the corner from my office. I love to occupy 34th Street. I love to occupy Village seven. I'm like at a MC. We come to this place, come to this place, we come to this place. Yeah, so Christian's been out commission with Rip with his appendix, so it's been it's been a real big movie month for us. Yeah. Me too. Which came the perfect time. Yeah. Honestly. As good of a time as one can get appendicitis Correct. Which is, sounds like it's never a great time, but it's never a great time. But if you're gonna get appendicitis at least it could be during the time that Amy and I decide to do a camp episode. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yay. Okay. So as always, we will start with new releases. Everything that we've been watching, which might not always be a new release, although for me it has mostly been, yeah. It's all new releases. And then we will get into our camp movies. So let's rock. Take it away. Let's rock. I know that I just off the bat, wanna talk about two that I know you have not seen because you are not notoriously a superhero girl. I don't consider myself a superhero girl. I do watch them and appreciate them because. They're fun. They can be fun. Okay. Sue me. I saw Superman, which has a 4.0 on letterbox by the way. I was tempted to see super, like I ran out of movies to see. Yeah. And I was really tempted that Fantastic Four, when Superman came out, we were in a dry spell. There was nothing out for a week or two. But I did see it, I saw it in IMAX 3D. The thing about Superman in general is he doesn't have that much of an interesting story in general. Like Spider-Man and Batman are a lot darker and moodier and more interesting. To me, Superman is just cookie cutters. Yeah. So it's a little bit lighter and brighter of a story in general. It was very good. The effects were awesome. It looked unbelievable. But the story itself was just okay, it's a superhero movie. And to that I will talk about Fantastic Four, which I thought Fantastic. Four was going to be like my end all be All is fantastic. Four Marvel yes, I get the Universe is mixed up, so Superman is dc. And so interestingly enough, Pedro Pascal was going to be. The new like head avenger. And this movie did so poorly that they are pulling him back from being like the head avenger now for the next movies future Pascal is like the hot topic of this podcast this week. Yeah, it will be. He will be. He will be. He will be. But I will say I was expecting Fantastic four because like they're setting up a whole new Marvel universe with this movie and it really did not hit, it was too much about like them having a baby. And who has a baby? Pedro Pascal and his wife whatever her name is. Damn. Yeah. The erasure of women. No, she's really cool. She's gorgeous. She's the girl from the Crown. She was Okay. I truthfully don't know. She's British. Oh, okay. Perfect. Yeah. Oh, okay. I don't, the only British woman on earth, I don't know British women's names who's ever asked. Sorry. Anyway, that, that's my fantastic four. I'm just like, I was really disappointed'cause I was expecting so much from it. I don't know why, maybe.'cause we're in a Pedro Pascal renaissance. We are getting Pedro Pascal renaissance. He has his little hands in everything. And I will, we will get to this, but as much as I love this man, he's not giving, the characters are not giving for me. Yeah. I something I did not, something materialist. I know honestly, him and Fantastic Four. He was a whiny baby. Yeah. Anyway. Okay. Should we just start with Edington? Yes. Okay. Now that we're on our Pedro Pascal Rena, my first note this Pedro Pascal renaissance that we're in, see actually, he didn't really hit for me in Edington. He was the only person that I liked in Edington. Yeah. I think it's because he actually represents everything that's wrong with liberals in, in Eddington. It was like the virtue signaling that was happening during 2020, and it's like he represents all of that in his character. I agree. But don't you think that making this movie is that Yeah, a hundred percent. That's exactly what the movie is. I just like, I can't separate Pedro Pascal from what that is. No, totally. But I'm also like this white guy making a movie about this 2020 experience. Yeah. Like it also felt I don't even know what the right word is. What did I write down? I don't know. Like performative, basically like a white man making this as performative about us being performative in 2020. I think it's wait, did you like this movie? Okay. I think it's meant to be very meta. Like I think that's the point of it is Everybody on either side and especially in 2020 was like just becoming these sort of like animated caricatures of themselves and completely lost the plot. I don't know, they were just, obviously this is the most exaggerated version of the subpopulations of these sort of sides Yes. Of people. Yeah. But I think he nailed it. I actually agree with everything that you're saying and I think that it's because I left the movie being like, why do we need this? Yeah. We experienced it. Do we really need an Antifa movie? I don't like why I'm I thought why if somebody was gonna make the Antifa movie, I appreciated that it was Ari Ster who obviously. Is a very like skilled storyteller and is very good at creating these really exaggerated amplified sets that make it it is a palpable movie. Yeah. I just, I feel like I hated Beau was afraid and I was like going in already yeah, my, okay. My friend put on his letter box, a third act hates to see Ari Aster coming. I think it's different. I think Ari Aster hates to see a third act coming. Be, was afraid was. Four acts, I'm pretty sure, regardless of however many acts it is, the last one or two were bad. And I feel like that with this loved, I loved the third act in editing time. I was just like, get me out of here. I really like that. Also, two and a half hours, almost three hours. I was like, I can't do this. That's one thing that I have to say about our camp episode is obviously most of the movies that we were doing, hour 30. It was so nice. We've been banging them out. I know. It was so nice. I know, like now I'm used to watching like episodes of a limited series that are 93 minutes long. Like I've just conditioned myself to be okay with that and movies that are like 260 minutes long. Yeah. And I'm like, bring back 90. No. Every movie I all the camp movies have been, it's been such a sweet treat. I know for watching a 90 minute, but I don't know my, I just didn't know. Because like at some points I like felt so bad for Joaquin Phoenix and same. And I was like the old man who was trying to get into the grocery store, I'm like, I feel for him. But then my cousin who saw it, she was like, fuck that. You don't play with COVID. And I'm like, okay, but listen, so this is what I was getting at, which is like so many comments on letterbox start condemning the movie and say that like they're making light of right wing politics and George Floyd's murder. And sometimes I'm just like, I hate it here so much. Like it is fucking satire. Like it is meant to be satire. This isn't a serious movie, obviously, like it is. No, I totally get that. And I think I'm like, as I was perusing letterbox and I see all these like one stars and it's this is just so tone deaf. This is just horrible that we're like making light of these topics. And I'm like, is that not literally what like art or storytelling or movies are, you're just like making light of things that were horrible in the moment. Not even making light, just like retelling them in a way that is easier to swallow. Yeah. But like still somehow Mark's history and still somehow like Mark's experience that we all went through in a way that is like easier to stomach digest. Yeah. So I'm like all of the people on letterbox saying that I'm like, you are what? This movie is a about though. I, okay, so I saw this movie with my cousin Molly, and she had your perspective. I was like, why was this made? And she was like, then why is any movie made? Like art? This is what art is. Yeah. And I'm just like, why are we having Antifa fly on a pj? Yeah. Because like, why not? But what is he saying? I think my issue with this movie is like, what is he saying? I think the movie is just. I think what he is saying is I think it's an incredibly existential message. I think it's a movie about how none of this matters because Antifa can come in and just kill you. I think sometimes it's just like a little more simple generally, yeah. We, I think that I was just like looking more, I, you're probably right because you seem to have a better grasp on edit ton than I do because I feel like I was just like trying to like search for hi, what his actual messaging was outside of this is all just goofy. Yeah. Yeah. Okay, let's move on. Do you wanna talk about together? My, I liked together. My only real note is that they showed the entire movie in the trailer. They did. And I was very disappointed by that. I like to, we also get back to 32nd trailers. S because I don't need a three minute long trailer. No, we saw the entire movie. Yeah. In the trailer. Yeah. Period. The entire movie. So I have nothing to say, because guess what? Everyone's seen it. Everybody's seen it. I saw a review that said this is what happens to straight people when they start calling each other partner. Which felt Oh true. And I so true. I wrote, it was just fun. They're killing the marketing of this movie, which is like ultimately a pretty mid movie, honestly. But that's how it goes, when you're just really good at marketing. Like Alison, no. Yeah. The marketing is insane or out there doing their press. I, no, I liked it. It wa I think it was above mid, I don't know about, how everyone's saying that it's a ripoff, like they stole this movie from That could be true. And it probably is. I tried to investigate it. It's like very unclear. I didn't yeah. But I'm like, it's like a simple enough premise that. It can't be whatever. Anyway. Yeah, I think it's it's about all of the things that everybody says. It's about it's about codependence and whatever. Yeah, I wrote, but it's also just fun and has a shit ton of plot holes. And the CJI isn't even that great. But ultimately, who cares when you're enjoying some much needed body horror on a rainy day at the Alamo Draft house? Am I right? Am I right? The one other thing that I wanted to say is that I think Dave Franco and Allison and Brie don't come for me, but your chemistry is not that palpable and you shouldn't have relied so heavily on that because I was not convinced at any point in the movie that they even liked each other, let alone were like, let's be so together forever that we merge. I think the point is that they hate each other though. Is it because when I was like watching some of their pro, so I did a lot. I went to the live Q screen. No, in the movie, not in real. Do you mean in real life or in the movie? Oh, in the in real life. But in the q and a in the movie, they're supposed to hate each other in real life. As I'm watching this, I'm also like, yeah, that's what I mean in the q and a. They were like, this was perfect for us because obviously our chemistry is so incredible. Yeah, and I'm like, is it like, I'm sorry, I'm not even convincing you guys like each other this much. Like in real life. In real life, like watching you, like watching your body language together. I'm not really convinced of anything and so all I will say is they probably, I don't disagree with that actually. Yeah. But I think it was noted in one of these like Q and As or interviews that he is really. Has bad anxiety and she doesn't. So I think that he leans on her to be like the outgoing, fun one. Yeah. Okay. And he's a little bit more reserved and I do think that might be where the divide is. Yeah. But I also have been picking that up. I'm like, for people that have been together for 12 years and seem like you're never going to get divorced in the near future at least. Yeah. Like it, you would think that it's like you could feel it more, right? Like all they talk about is how obsessed they are with each other, but I'm like, it's not really coming through. Yeah. And that's, no, I get it. Whatever. I get it. The private parts of your relationship are private. Maybe it's just hard to perform for people even when you're actually being yourselves. But maybe do a little more I don't know, work on the parts before you go in instead of relying on this chemistry that you claim carried you through. Yeah. Also I do think that they were just supposed to hate each other in the movie and that was palpable. That was palpable. But I'm like, I couldn't separate them.'cause I'm like, you guys are so obsessed with the fact that you're a real couple. So now it's also palpable that maybe you don't like each other in way. I don't know. I've, I think to this point, I was very surprised that they merged because I'm like, for people who hate each other, why are they doing this? I guess it's a codependence. It's like at that point you don't really care at the end of the day. At the end of the day, it's not codependence. Okay. Sorry baby. Sorry Baby. Loved loved. It's a story about friendship. It is a story about friendship. Her friend was such a down bitch. I, she was like the best friend. A girl who has been sexually assaulted, could ever want in their lives a thousand percent. Oh my God, I just got chills. It's like we all would so lucky to have this like calm and nurturing person. Yeah. In our life. In our life, yes. Yeah. I loved like the four part act, how it was all over the place. Yeah. Yeah. I loved when the actual assault happened. We didn't see it. We were just outside. I love Oh my loved it. And I love just the filming from day to night, I know, to dawn. Yeah. I was like, what a perfect representation of how time actually moves when you are put in a situation like that. Totally. You're just so disassociated and your only marker of time is like the light in the sky. Ugh. So it was honestly, I was like, oh, it's gonna be good. It was so good. It was hilarious. She is so fucking funny. Yeah. Like her timing, She's so dead, man. She's just just a natural. Yeah, she's like a natural comedian. Yeah. Without one of those people who's not really trying and you can tell that she's like self-consciously funny'cause she's I think probably everybody misunderstands me. Type of funny. Yeah. But I guess I'll just keep going with it. Yeah. I think it was heartbreaking, funny, patient and warm. It was like everything that you would want. I will actually say the ending and how they ended it with the baby and her being like, sorry baby. I was like, not my favorite. Yeah. But I, Eva, Victor. If you're listening to this, we're very proud of you. I remember like my, when I was working at Three Arts years and years ago, my boss at the time sent me Eva's materials and was like, should I sign this girl? And this was like so long ago at this point. And I was like, dude, she looks insane. Like a hundred percent. Yeah. She never did. Of course. Yeah. But I ju I, so I've been like tracking her for a really long time. Yeah. And I'm like so happy that she is able to like, have this breakout movie for herself. Yeah. And and this movie of all things, Yeah. I was like, I didn't realize that she was the writer and director. Yeah. When I was only after I saw,'cause I was just, was like getting a bunch of ads about it and I'm like, of course this is my type of movie. I know nothing about it. I can just tell it's my type of movie. Yeah. And I was obviously very moved after I saw it. And so I started. Doing some digging. And I was like, she wrote this, she directed this. She's acting in it. Like what a perfect movie. Yeah. And I just love that the topic wasn't sensationalized at all. When she says, I feel guilty when I don't think about it. I, she just, I don't know, she just really made a movie that is both entertaining but is not actually making light of what she, went through her character goes through. But I also feel like it's probably the purest depiction of what that feels like. That feels yeah. Yeah, exactly. And like how rare and like to have movies for over a hundred years and for it to like finally be depicted well for one of the first times is like an insane thing, and I won't get into details, but that is how it feels some, part of you does feel when you've had an experience like that, like you owe it so much, almost like you owe it so much brain power and attention. Yeah. And it's almost like a child that you need to tend to like it, it becomes its own sort of entity. And I think that's beautiful. Yeah. I mean it does though. Yeah. And and I think to be able to depict that in a movie that's a couple hours long is incredibly power. It's a unique gift that she has, honestly. Yeah. And I'm not trying to be dramatic. It, she is like a rare No, I, she's like a rare talent. I can't wait to see what she does in the future. Yeah. I agree. Okay. Did you watch I Love You forever? I didn't. I asked Christian for his review because he watched it. It Okay. And what's his review? He said, I can't formulate thoughts right now, but I hated it. Okay. And I do understand that I do think it's a really good depiction of what it's like to be actually, not that I really know truthfully, but would I assume it is. Okay. What people seem the consensus is that it's a really good depiction of what it's like to be in that kind of a toxic relationship. It's like emotional abuse, right? It's somebody who's like Borderliney. The character is clearly based off of Pete Davidson. Yeah. So reading who has borderline. Yeah. And after reading Cassie David's. Book and she talks a lot about her relationship with him. It's very clear that this character, the girl and her boyfriend, her like famous boyfriend is based off of their relationship. And it's such a tough watch because it's I definitely don't re recommend it if anyone has this kind of like emotional abuse kind of trauma. I really don't when it comes to relationships. But it was like tough for even me to watch. Yeah. It wasn't like phenomenal, but it was like clearly well fleshed out and I think the abuse, just like the abuse in the previous movie. Sorry baby. I think that it's like a pretty good depiction of what it is. I wish that you did watch it so we can, we could discuss, because I actually think that you would. Like it not on a level of this is a perfect film. But just like on the emotional level. Because you're really good at that stuff and you're very like tapped into that with movies. I think that you would, if nothing else, just appreciate how it's portrayed. Yeah. Yeah. I appreciate that. I am gonna watch it. It's been on my list. Christian like randomly watched it when I wasn't around. I don't think he knew that I was on my list. Can't fault him. Fake, fake. Just getting these, fake as fuck. Okay. But that brings us to O High. Okay. And O High is the one that I didn't see. Oh, no, you didn't. I know I was supposed to see it two nights ago and I ended up not. Okay, great. I saw, which I am devastated about. I will say I've gotten so many movies in the last two weeks and I'm devastated about not getting Ohio in. Devastated. It's, it, you definitely don't need to see it in theaters. You know what, on Wednesday I was supposed to see it and I saw that it's coming out on Apple TV plus in two days. And I'm like, just watch it. Just watch it. It's actually a really I'm trying to be a little more intentional about that saving some movies for at home, just so I'm not like, as I have nothing to watch at home, which ends up happening. Or shout out Zach Bailey when we are like, scrolling through new releases when we're at home together. Yeah. And you're like, seen it. He's, did you see this? That's how I'm too yes. And he is like, all right, that's enough. I was, I'm trying to save some movies. But I just, I took a sick day from work and I went swimming. It was during the heat wave. It's 98 degrees out, and it was like, I have to be in a pool. And where did you go swimming On the roof. There's a pool here? Yeah. Oh, wow. We're recording in Christian's apartment. Christian, you've got it made, bro. Yeah. And specifically in his bathroom? Yes. Because the sound sounds really good in here. So actually Amy and I are sitting on the floor basically clutching the toilet right now. Literally, the microphones on the toilet. Anyway, and then I was like, oh, perfect, I'll go see O High because I just, I can't be outside unless I'm in water or I need to be in the movie theater. But I won't say too much about it. I just liked it so much more than I thought I would. I it's just good. Okay. It's really entertaining. Love it. It's it's not that. That deep. It's about an emotionally unavailable boy and a girl who's I love you, but you treated me like your girlfriend. Yeah. And why would you do that? And he's you're crazy. And then, and then they fall in love, I assume. I'm not gonna say, okay. You almost got me honestly to tell you the ending, but no it's a bit of an unexpected ending. Okay, cool. So that's so high. What else do you got? The only other one that I have is, I know what you did last summer. The new one. Oh, how was that? It was really fun. It was like just another team Thrasher. Yeah. Yeah. I saw it with Courtney. She took me out to dinner. Cute. And we went to the movies. I feel like her and I have like a really thick bond around those sort of like nineties, early two thousands. A hundred percent. And me watching the one Friday the 13th being like, this bitch really has got me watching this right now. But no, we saw, it was just like, again, yeah. If you have nothing to watch at home, watch it. Yeah. Don't watch it by yourself. It's not like a movie that you need to see. But it was really fun for us to go and see in theaters. We're like jumping. We're like, oh my God. Nod to the old one. Yeah. Jennifer Love, he, and it and Freddie Prince Jr's in it. Yeah. So it was a fun nod to the old one. But yeah, it was good. I think I gave it three stars. Cool. I only have a few more. I saw a creature of the Black Lagoon for the first time in my life. Loved it. Classic. I watched The Lion King, which ultimately is, I just wanted. Real quick, just say The Lion King Hamlet is a perfect movie. And I really long and yearn for the early two thousands and the nineties Disney movies that were absolutely perfect. And we will never have that again. If we have children, our children will never have that ever. Yeah. And I think that like nineties, early, early two thousands not even like past 2005, I think that we just lived in such a special time with the Lion King and the Princesses, and it's just and like early Pixar toy story, I just think that it was like a dream. And rewatching Lion King every song. It's just something that like millennials and nobody else will ever get to experience. And that's really beautiful. Yeah. And I'm very grateful for that. I saw F1. And just like when we watched Top Gun it like, I was like, okay, I love America. I love sports. Okay. I feel like I have to like, in order to actually watch these movies, I just need to watch'em with you. Okay. Yeah.'cause it just makes it so much fun. I saw it when we get really into it by myself and I was like, I love this. Yeah, it's so good. It was another like two and a half hour one, but I was like, and I've never really been a Brad Pitt girl, but I was like, Brad Pitt, I love you, Carrie. What's her name? Carrie K Con or whatever. Who? The girl from Banes. Oh, she's, I do love her's. The love interest. And it's just it was so good. And does she have her Irish accent? She does. And I love her. I hate it. Stripped up her accent. I know. Don't do that to me. When she was in the swimming, I hate that anyway. Oh, that fucking movie. That's stupid. I, but no, it F1 was so good. I love a, my, I think my letterbox review was like, I love a sports movie about a sport that I know nothing about. Obsessed. Yeah. Moving on, I, oh, the last one is, which is So Not you, but Naked Gun. We haven't had this kind of movie and it, and I feel like it we're gonna talk about what Hot American summer and I feel like they're so similar of a super slap sticky just like a movie that like you make'cause it's fun and funny. Yeah. And everyone who wrote it directed it. Produced it. I don't even know the premise. He's a cop. Great. Period. Okay. And there are old ones, old naked guns that, like my dad loves which I actually don't recall. I'm sure I've seen them, but I don't recall like watching them. But it's like the old Pink Panther. It's just like old just nonsense and goofy. And we haven't really had that and Akiva from. The Lonely Island directed it. Oh, so it's his movie? Yeah. Yeah. And it's just, it was just so fucking good when Molly, my cousin, and I saw we were the only girls in the theater shout out. And we saw it opening night, actually. It was like all of these nerdy men that were like so pumped to see it. But I have to say, like being in a theater ha laughed the entire time. Have not experienced that in so long. And like I do feel in my heart that comedy is slowly, I think studios and streamers are starting to take more chances. Yeah. With comedy again. We talked about this last episode. It does feel like the comedy renaissance is happening right now. Is starting again within all of those shows that we just got all at once. Yeah. And I guess now with and like Friendship. Yeah. For example, like obviously that's a student, but I feel like this is so particular because it's like. Like a spoof movie. It was so good. And I'm overjoyed with the fact that Naked Gunn is like doing well and everyone's this is the best comedy we've seen in years. It's such a dream. All right. Guess I'll watch it. Okay. Camp. So moving into our camp episode, should we say what movies we're going to do? Sure. I have already name dropped a few of so we are gonna run through, but I'm a cheerleader. Wet Hot American Summer, Friday the 13th, the original from 1980, and then Friday the 13th, the remake from 2009. Heavyweights and Moonrise Kingdom. Yeah. Okay. Should we start with, but I'm a cheerleader? Sure. This was the first one that I re-watched. Same camp, but also camp. Camp. Natasha Leone has never been prettier in her life. She or a better actress. So Good. Natasha? Never been better. I really liked, but I'm a cheerleader. Wait, have you not seen it before? So I saw it in high school. Yeah. And I think I didn't understand what satire was like. It was just randomly on. Do you remember if your parents had HBO, but like you couldn't go on and. Pick what movie you just had to see what time the movie was on. Oh, yeah. It was Channel 301 for us. Oh 3, 0 1 to three 10 were the channels. And so I'd have to look ahead to see what movies were planned. That's like how I saw so many movies in like high school, middle school. My house did not have that. My dad's house had it. And I would be like, oh, but I'm a cheerleader. That looks interesting. That sounds fun. I'm 14. Yeah, this sounds really interesting to me. And so I'd be like, okay it's playing at eight o'clock on channel 302. And then you're like, what is this? I remember being like, I don't get it. Yeah. I just don't really get what's going on here. So I didn't see it in a real way, or maybe I saw it in the realist way. Yeah. But rewatching it I, I really liked it. I just actually I'm done with that thought. Okay, cool. I cry that vegetarian is like the main indicator for being a lesbian. Wait, so you know, I cry at that. I do too. And everyone's oh yeah. Everyone's you're a vegetarian. Wait. Yeah. Les, when they're talking about their root and the one girl's like the root of being gay or whatever, and the one girl's oh, my root is my mom wore pants to her eyes. I cried at that. It was like the way that, that's gonna be my future daughter's. Yeah. Root is crazy. Like when she said that, when I re-watched, I was like, okay, pans litter, wedding. Love it. Love it. What else did we have? Great costumes. Gorgeous colors, shapes and angles. It's giving Tim Burton it's Bubble Gum Dream. It's Jamie Babbitt, the director, was aiming for the queer version of Clueless vibe And Tone wise, yes. Okay, I see that. I see that the soundtrack was so dreamy. Yeah. I love, it's just like a chimes, it's just like a pink, cloudy dream. It's very cloudy. Yeah. It's very it feels like you're on a cloud. I wrote this was The Curse Barbie for the early aughts oh's. True. What I would like to say. Yeah. I'm sorry. Rewind. RuPaul, Julie Del, Michelle Williams, Lia Dal. What? Yeah. Okay. That is something that 14-year-old me did not, could not, I know. Comprehend. I know. So when I was re-watching it. And RuPaul appeared. Zach walked into the living room and he is is that RuPaul? And I was like, holy shit. You're like, wait, yes it is. Yes. That's RuPaul. It's, yeah. And then he is like, when he is saying to all the boys, he's your punishment will be watching sports. It really is. It is so funny. It's so campy. I do love it. It's so campy. It is a classic. And I just, I loved the color palette. Yeah. It's gorgeous. Loved it. Like even the costumes when they're wearing like their like little pink and purple nightgowns, I'm like, gorgeous. Yeah. Gorgeous. Yo, like they, the detail, especially for when it was created, like it really is I don't know, I was rewatching it and I was like, everybody was losing their fucking minds for Barbie. And I'm like, but nobody's talking about, but I'm a cheerleader, which actually invented pink. I feel like people. Did at the time, right? I wasn't around. No, me neither. But I do feel like it's such a cold classic. I guess you're right. The fact that it's a cold classic and not just like a classic in general and everyone like references it all the time. Yeah, exactly. Is something in, its in and of itself. Everyone's gre Gerwig had all these meanings about the color pink and in invented the color pink. And I am like the way that, but I'm a cheerleader, doesn't get its flowers. I'm that You're not wrong. No, you're not wrong. So yeah, I loved it. Oh love it. One last thing. My first audible laugh during this movie was when she's this is my son Rock. It's just so fucking stupid. It is. It is a stupid, silly movie. This is Rock. Rock. I'm like, I love that name. Why can't we bring back the name Rock. I, that's actually one of my notes in this, in, in one of these movies. Like simpler Times Not Rock, but we'll get there. Okay. Let's go to Wet Hot American Summer. Yeah. The same, in the same vein of like, how lucky are we? Like we are so lucky to have had this cast devised 25 years ago. Everyone is a heavy hitter. Everyone is like the top of Hollywood now and it's so crazy. It's insane how this was made when they were all like, relatively young and starting now. That was, yeah. And like really. Extremely consistent. It's an unbelievable movie comedy wise. It's it is genius and Yeah, like I was talking about with Naked Gun, this is yeah. We texted briefly about the drug scene. It's to have a plot and then like weave in and out of the plot and have like little side plots that like, obviously don't make sense time-wise. Or like at all actually. Yeah. Like it's fun to do that. Yeah. Although the drug thing was crazy and I was like, I don't, I did not remember that. I do remember it either. And I read that apparently it was filmed last minute. Just as like potentially a gag or, no, not just if they needed a filler scene. Oh. And then they decided to put it in and. It's like apparently the most in like comments and stuff that people have or like reviews that people have. It's like the most talked about scene in the entire movie is like the going into town montage. The town. Yeah. But it's just like a fun, it, it like definitely goes to a place where now I might not appreciate it as much as when I used to watch it, yeah. Yeah. I think it's'cause your humor evolves a little bit. For sure. I can appreciate. But I'm like the way that, like the old movies used to have such a wild, insane montage that strays away from the plot, like plot wise and timewise Yeah. And then comes back to center and let's get back on track. That's regular. Yeah. That's what, but like that, like what a beautiful thing about comedy that you can just be like, that was genius. We're moving on. Yeah. You, I think I would like more of that. Yeah. In this upcoming comedy renaissance is I love that. Yeah. Can we also talk about the fact that this is Bradley Cooper's first role ever? Is that true? Yes. Whoa. It's his first role in movie he bought. Oh my God. He's bottoming in his, he was probably so in over his head with all of these major comedic, but were they at the time, they all, yeah, honestly, yeah, because they were all like Chicago people and they have all been doing stuff like, but they weren't like, who they, who we know them. Like they weren't household names, but not all of them, but christopher Maloney, Amy Poer, like the, like Elizabeth Banks, they, Molly Shannon. They all started really young. Yeah. Yeah. Oh my god. Molly Shannon. Michael Showalter is in it, and Michael Showalter, I would like to say is one of the best showrunners that we have. Ever in our generation I guess he's the older generation, but he is a television icon, and it's funny to see him on screen in this. It is so good. This is the camp that I want to live inside of all the movies that we that we watch for this episode. This is the camp that you wanna, this is the camp I want the heroin montage. I actually can agree with that. I want it all. I wanna, yes. Everyone's great. I think Janine Glo is the star of this, in my opinion. Which one is she? She's like the main, like the camp director. Camp director, yeah. Oh, yeah. She's such a familiar face. Yeah. Like one of those people I just don't know her name. I have a quick story. When she was at Stress Factory Comedy Club, when I was running it back in the day, she did a standup set and she like does sets all over New York. You see her all the time just walking around. She's so cool. But somebody came with like DVDs for her to sign and they were like, put your character's name on it. And she was like, who did I play in this? It was just so funny for me to see her and watch her be like, who the fuck did I play? Was I in this movie? I'm like, that's an icon. That's so funny. And two of my favorite scenes. I think it's hilarious. Two comedy genius things that happen in this movie. Number one, when they're about to play the baseball game and they're like, this is too trite. We're not doing it hilarious. And also when he's I'm cold, she gives the sweater and they're doing like the flannel in this sweater thing. I'm like, we just don't, we don't have this anymore. But I guess we are starting to get it with that's so naked gunny comedy. Yeah. You're like, call back to naked gun. I think my favorite bit in this whole movie, honestly. First of all, let's talk about the Paul Ru of it all. He hot, like he's hot. Apparently he improvises most of his part. So like when he slaps the tray, slaps all the food and shit on, he's I'm not I don't know how she kept a straight face and he had to pick it up. Oh my God. That is one that really is one of the funniest scenes. But it's the camp director and the professor's back and forth is the funniest bit to me in it. Especially because he keeps specifying that he's an adjunct professor and she's she just like pretends that she knows what it means to be an adjunct. And he's hysterically crying because he's an adjunct. And when I, I watched this movie a lot throughout like high school and college. Yeah. Because I thought it was so funny. Only rewatching it now at 30 years old, I'm like, oh, I get the significance of this show. Wait, I don't like being like a full professor versus an assistant professor. Oh. So it's like you're not tenured. Oh yeah. Basically. No, Yeah, obviously. But I'm like, I did not get that joke, get that back in the day joke. And to me rewatching, I was like, this is so fucking funny. Yeah. Apparently so both this and when I'm a cheerleader absolutely bombed obviously when it first came out, which like makes sense. It's like such a. Specific type of humor that both, but I'm a cheerleader. Doesn't surprise me. This one does. No, apparently this bombed really bad and both are now considered cult classics. Yeah. So did you ever watch When we were in college, they came out with the TV show? No. About I the last remember this? Oh no. They came out with the TV show about the first day and then when I was looking into it, when I re-watched it for this episode, I saw that, I think that they came out with a few years after a new, a different season about another day or something. So I think that they have two Yeah. Full separate seasons, years apart about, and it's like the same cast. Yeah. I don't know. Sometimes things like that, I'm like just let it. I recall liking it. I think I'm gonna rewatch the, at least the first day of summer.'cause that's when Amy Poer doesn't know that Bradley Cooper's gay yet. And she's like trying to hook up with him. Oh, I watch that. Watch that fun. Alright, let's move on. Let's move on to Friday 13th, 1980. Sure. I've never seen it. I actually don't think I've seen any Friday the far 13th. I thought this was boring. Yeah, but I didn't know it took place in New Jersey and I was like, shout out. Shout out New Jersey. Shout out New Jersey. And that's like my note. That's literally my note. I have two notes, two other notes. I love a good psycho and mother son pipeline. Yeah. Like Norman ba give me, kill her mother. Give me Norman Bates as hell, bitch. Yeah. Yeah. Kill her mother. And my literally only other note is why does the hero girl have to have that haircut? Because it was nine TV and I hate it. Alright. I don't have a lot of notes on this. I texted Amy right after I rewatched it and I said, I'm so sorry for making you watch this. She was incredibly forgiving. It is the most boring movie. It's on this earth. It is good to set up. I'm sure the entire franchise though. Yeah. Yeah, definitely.'cause the one, the 2009 is so involved in the franchise. Yeah. 1981. What it really is that in 1980 I apparently so this movie costs$550,000 to make in 1980, but grossed 60 million. Which I think at the time was, it was inspired by Halloween, like the original Halloween from 1978. And obviously in 1980, 60 million in movie theaters for a horror movie Yeah. Is like insane. Insane. Yeah. Like it did insane numbers. And apparently this was considered so disturbing at the time, Ireland and Finland Bandit completely from being shown. So it's it's just that our threshold, like our tolerance for horror has just gone up. Yeah. So significantly. I always think of that one quote that's you will live to see manmade horror beyond your comprehension. That's gorgeous. And I think about that. Who said that all the time? It's just it just circulates around Twitter sometimes I think a random person just said, my God, I love that. But it's, but like we are like, we are getting there. And I think a lot of it starts with the mid summers and the hereditary and we've just been on this horror is such an important genre. It is. It is, to me the most important genre. And I think like we are obviously moving towards a society that actually acknowledges that and starts to like I think we're moving, yeah, we're moving towards, we're not there. But I think hereditary. Changed horror. Like it changed toward, like seriously in a permanent way. Obviously we've had good horror movies before Hereditary. Yeah. That's not a question, like Silence of the Lambs won the best picture Oscar, I forget what year that was. So it's it's not like nobody thought about horror before considered it, but I think generally we are moving towards a place where people are actually like, this is a serious genre. Yeah. And it's like important even with Monkey Paul too. Jordan Peele movies, Yeah. That, yeah. Get out yeah. All three of them. See all of'em. Nope. So it's I think, watching this, I'm like, this is gimmicky, but it, I don't know. Something about it like tickles me to know that even in 1980, all of these people rushed to the movies to see this. Yeah. No I have appreciation for that for sure. Another fun fact is that Tom z Sini he was the makeup artist, was a Vietnam War veteran. Oh shit. And he used his wartime medical experience to make the kills look disturbingly realistic. And he did a good job. And he did a good job. And so I guess like the point of these fun facts is just to say us in 1980, we would've been like, holy shit. No. And listen, I totally get that. I don't, I'm not like, this was a horrible horror film. It was just like a little boring. It was boring. But I'm saying it was hard for me to watch, honestly. I was like very understimulated during it. I think that's really it. It's just, I think it's just funny to watch a movie like this and think about how the quality has increased so much. The one guy Bill, when he is dead on the back of the door, his eyes are fully fluttering. They're just fully blinking. I was like, I rewound like six times. I like, there's no fucking line. There's just no way. And I'm like, that just wouldn't fly. Yeah. Know. I feel like a lot of what you're saying actually has to do with I just watched the like 1954 Creature of the Black Lagoon and I feel like it's the same thing. I'm like, this is like not scary to me at all, but it is technically a horror film. And people back in the day, in the fifties were shaking in their boots over shit like this. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. It's the same thing. And, but like our palette tends to keep getting more elevated over time Yeah. As the films do. So Yeah. That the older stuff just feels a little bit paler. Yeah, exactly. Totally. Okay, so what the next one, let's think, let's talk about Friday 13th, 2009. Everyone is so annoying. Oh, by the way, wouldn't wanna be at either of these camps, even though shout out New Jersey. Yeah, no. Yeah, def not, but everyone like, so there's like the first group and then the second group of people. Everyone in the first group sucks and I hate them. Although I do love the actor Ben Feldman. I love his ass, but he is also annoying. Wait, he's the one with the big eyes and he's like having sex with the girl. I love him. He's so cute. He's a great actor. N now shout out madman. But one of the best lines ever. I don't think about you. I know. Yeah. Ah, I don't think about you at all. So good. But yeah, shout up madman. Shout out Ben Feldman. I love you in this. You did not. You were annoying. Everyone in the first group was fucking annoying to me. Okay. But love the roll credits 25 minutes in. Yeah. Love it. Love it. Your favorite boys in this, the guy from House of Wax? Yes. The second group is definitely more of, we've got a Pan. Pan and Baker girl. We got the blonde guy from Party Down. Yes. We've got the guy from House of Wax. Yes. The second group is an iconic early aughts. It is group. Wait I wrote that too and I was like, I, in my notes I wrote, wait, let me read what I wrote. I wrote, it's just the perfect teen Thrasher, to be honest. Justice for Marsha, like what happened to her? I guess I'm just shout out New Jersey. Also, how old are these people supposed to be Crazy. This is what early two thousands tarros look like. All I kept thinking was how much our standard of beauty has changed. And thank God for that, thank God. But love the roll into credits. 25 minutes into it and apparently this had the biggest opening weekend in 2009 for any horror remake ever at the time. Okay, so it did eat it up. No e my rock comment, which is so funny because the guy's name is Clay. Uhhuh, rock and Clay. Rock and Clay. Could it be any more? Nineties, early two thousands sports are gonna be rock and clay. Rock and clay stop. But this one was definitely like more fun and I did notice that the. The way that the deaths happened were so so fun in this one. They were fun. It's just porn and gore. That's what your favorite, it's literally, I know. It's literally porn and gore. I'm like, they're all of their like fake boobs are out. They're sucking and fucking Are they fake though? Because I feel like a lot of them were, the first two sets of boobs are fake. The third are naturals. They're definitely naturals. They're definitely natural. Oh, fake boobs. As in the girl has real, like fake boobs in real life. Yeah. Okay. I thought you meant like they, oh no they're not. I'm like prosthetic. Okay. Why would they do that? How would they do that anyway, that's my notes on that. Alright, great. Heavy weights. Heavy weights. Let me just read the logline of this poorly misfits. Portly misfits. When I die, put portly misfit on my tombstone. That's the funniest thing I've ever seen in my life. Portly, misfits join up to take back their summer camp from a fitness guru, portly Misfits. I love it. I love it. Heavyweights is literally just dodge ball. I realize. It is just dodge ball, apparently. Ben Stiller had a lot of shit for just like soft watching this, doing heavyweights and then dodge ball. I like never put that together until I was watching it and I was like, wait a minute. Say what I, this literally I wrote, honestly, this movie is great. It's just nostalgic. And Ben Stiller's a 2000 gem. I don't think I appreciated his humor or character acting when I saw of his movies at the time. And of course I didn't because I was a kid, but like Dodge ball, Zoolander, even meet the parents. He's just funny. I agree. A fun fact about this movie is that most of the kids actually attended camp where it was filmed for weeks leading up to the shoot so that they could all bond. That's why you can see it all, you can really see it on screen. They seem like besties cute'cause they spent weeks together at camp and a lot of them are in the Mighty Ducks together. I obviously saw Mighty Ducks, but I can't remember Keenan's in it. Yeah. Oh yeah. The other guy's in it. It's crazy that Keenan is the only one who that turned out Ra the other guy, I forget his name, but he's been doing a lot of podcasts. He was also very addicted to drugs for a while. I know. Because him last night, bummy the fuck out. I know. It's so bummy, but the main, but he's okay now. The main guy, the main kid couldn't tell you his name. He's so cute. There's one point where he is look, this qui quivering. And I'm like, give this man an Oscar. That's it. Yes. And then there's another line that I liked in this. Someone once said war as hell. They've never been to summer camp. I love that. Also, I'm like, do they still have fat camps? I did look it up. And they're, and they do exist. Are you kidding? And you know what, I was scrolling through some of these pictures on these fat camps and these girls just look, guess what? Normal. Yeah, I'm sure that they do. I'm pissed. Yeah, I'm pissed. Big diet is coming for us. I fucking hate big diet. I hate big diet. Apparently the candy sash was real, by the way, like the kids in the movies actually. That's hilarious of candy. And I love them for that. Also, the blob. Like the big, the movie Playable. Oh no. Yeah, the block, the big inflatable thing in the water. Apparently Ben Stiller, during filming, he couldn't be in it, but like apparently he spent all of his time in character. But just playing the blob playing. That's so funny. Which I love. It makes me like it, it's just crazy. Ben Stiller going from this to severance, like directing severance. Yeah, I know. Who would've predicted? Probably him. Yeah. Honestly he always had a plan. Alright. And on to our last movie. Last but certainly not least, definitely not least A Perfect Cozy Sunday Night Watch. I watched it on Sunday. Moonrise Kingdom. Moonrise Kingdom Per it's a perfect movie. Wait, my last note is rated at five out of five. Yeah.'cause it's literally a perfect film. It's a perfect period. It's a perfect movie. This movie is near and dear to my heart. Do you know the scene of Susie when she's on the watchtower, the binoculars in her orange dress? Yeah. So I, this came out in 2012. I probably saw it in like 2013 and it was my phone background for three years. That's still oh shit of her because I, that's how obsessed I was Yeah. With this movie. I just remember at the time, even at 18 and I guess the actors are probably like 12 or something, just thinking it was remarkable how talented and beautiful they both work. I know. I was like, they are the way they both move many places. The way they both move their mouths. Yeah. I like I get, yeah. And I forgot that in rewatching it. I was like, oh my God, I forgot they moved their mouths and spoke this way. Especially Sam. Yeah. He speaks so low, but is so animated in his face. Yeah. It's incredible. So good. It feels, watching, it feels do you remember those popup picture books? Yeah. When you were a kid? Yeah. That's what this movie feels like. I don't, it's just like warm and animated. Yeah. But it's real. I don't even know. It just feels like the best. I was gonna say a hug, but it's like more than a hug. I, yeah. I can't really explain it. This is Wes Anderson. This is his best movie to me. I, in my opinion, me too. Yeah. He has nothing has come close to Moonrise Kingdom. Yeah, I think so. I wrote, this is really Wes Anderson at his absolute best. Before he became so stylized that he effectively lost the plot of his own movies and just became a spectacle or caricature of the color palette that he pioneered. And for that, I am grateful to have known and loved this movie for over a decade. It's like a time capsule of everything. One Wes Anderson was once so skilled at Totally, he invented the color yellow in this film. He literally, he invented color. I think he did. I think he invented color. He really he put his whole pussy into this one. He really did. And it's I don't wanna he's still making, decent. It's not just, I haven't loved any of his latest, although French dis dispatch was fine. Didn't like, I liked one act, didn't like asteroid city. And I didn't see, I hated Asteroid City. I didn't see the, what was the latest one that was. The veian scheme. Scheme. I didn't see it. Christian saw it. He said he liked it, but probably same vibe as Yeah, like asteroids hair. Yeah. Dispatch. Yeah. I just, this is Christian's opinion, not mine, but I do agree with it that Wes Anderson, like at this point should just stick to animation because his movies are becoming like live action animation. And that's why they feel like they, that's an interesting take. Yeah. But I agree. Yeah. Like it's just so stylized. Yeah. That it's it's distracting from the actual story. And I think if it was just animation, it could still be like beautiful and have a unique style. I don't know. I don't know if I agree that it's distracting. I think that it's what in Moonrise Kingdom at least it's what makes it yeah, but that's when he was, had the balance. Yeah. No, now it's like moving. Sets and shit. No I get what you're saying. Yeah. I would be at this camp. I would happily be at this camp Edward Norton. This is Edward Norton's. Best role ever. Ever it ever. It's so good. And you know what? Watching Bruce Willis made me sad as hell know. I know. It is sad. My last two notes. Yeah. One of my favorite love stories of all time. Yes. And my last note is Susie bringing records and books. Just records and books while she runs away is me and her kitten. And her kitten. She didn't bring anything necessary. She broke fucking, she brought books. I know. And I'm like, that's my bitch right there. I know. And when they pierce her ears, oh my God. It's just, oh, it's such a good story. It's such a perfect beginning, middle, and end. Wes Anderson can is actually one of the few. Male writers who can write a woman like he wrote Francis McDermott. Yeah, like I think he makes her complicated without her having this overbearing role.'cause it's really about the kids. It's just so good. It's so good. It's a perfect film. Stuck in time forever. Ugh. Amazing. It is a, and then all the camp kids come together. I know. So I have a question. Of all of the camp activities that we watched, which camp activity would you like to be a part of? I guess the blob. That's my answer. Wait, really? Yes, of course. I'm like, course. What else did they do? They like, played sports. No boring. There's wet Hot American Summer has like all of the activities going, like they're doing art and they're acting art can be fun. I'm a little theater kid. Which, but you could do that whenever if we're talking like summer, I mean I would be a part of the theater and love that. But more than anything I would want my little ass in a bathing soup in the lake. Yeah. Playing with the Bob Blob. Playing in the Yeah. Lake all day. Yeah, I agree. Or like Moonrise Kingdom when they're learning survival skills. I don't need that. That would be fun. I don't think that would be fun. I think that would be like, I'm learning survival. Yeah. No, I wanna literally swim. You're like survive all the fittests. Exactly. And if I'm not meant to be here, I'm not to be here. Alright. I think that concludes our episode. Yay. Summer camp. If you've listened for this long. Thank you. We love you. Thank you. Amy's alarm keeps going up. Yes. So I think we're done. Okay. Stay tuned for our next theme, our next episode. We'll be back in the fall. We'll be back in the fall. We're traveling. Amy's going to London. We're going to London to go see every play. Known to man. Known to man. And I'm going You're gonna, Paris? I'm going to, oh, France the south of France. Oh, south of France. Okay. With Courtney Ann Crosby. If you're listening. Oh, you are? Shout out to my girl. Oh, wow. I didn't know It's actually me and Courtney's first, like one-on-one interaction. Yeah. I'm like, wait, romantic talent is beautiful. It's one getaway. All right. See you in September. Bye. Bye,
