This is a weekly podcast for drummers looking for new ideas on how they can maintain persistence to succeed in their musical goals. My guests and I tell stories and discuss ideas on ways to get through technical, physical and mental barriers.
I spent the last 10 years as a psychiatric provider and enjoy having deep conversations with people to help them find their motivation to get them where they want to be. I returned to drumming in 2022 with a commitment to listen, practice, and learn. Austn Haynes is a poet and producer from Asheville, North Carolina. He is a founding member of the hip hop group Free Radio. He is as much facilitator of music/creation as he is a creator. He's collaborated with Government Mule to remix their song Black Horizon. He also works with John Medeski and Jeff Firewalker Schmitt to produce their podcast Saint Disruption.
In this episode we discuss some ways that hip hop influences the drummers and beat makers of other styles of music, technology as an instrument, and ways to stay engaged with the creative process even when we are not actively creating.
