Effort Is The Evidence

If you’ve ever stared at your phone wondering, “Do they even like me?” this conversation is for you. We take one of the most repeated dating lines, “if he wanted to, he would,” and slow it down with a matchmaker’s eye for patterns. Because the problem usually isn’t that you can’t tell what’s happening, it’s that you’re trying to make inconsistency feel like a sign.
We talk about what effort really looks like in modern dating: consistent communication, clear intention, making and keeping plans, real follow-through, emotional availability, and forward movement. We also level the playing field. Men experience the same uncertainty when a woman says she’s interested but disappears, cancels, or stays vague. “Mixed signals” aren’t mysterious, they’re inconsistent, and inconsistency is information.
From a faith-centered perspective, we anchor this in a simple test: confusion versus peace. God is not the author of confusion, so when dating feels like anxiety, guessing, and emotional whiplash, it’s worth paying attention. We also get honest about why people override the signs: potential, sunk time, fear of starting over, and early chemistry that gets mistaken for long-term alignment.
If you’re tired of carrying the connection alone, you’ll leave with a clearer standard for healthy relationships and a better question to ask: what is the effort showing?
The Phrase And The Problem
Renee RichelHello, loves. Welcome back to 1 True Talks. I'm really excited about today's conversation because it is something I see every single week as a matchmaker. And the phrase is this if he wanted to, he would. Now, I want to approach this a little differently because yes, that statement holds true. But if we don't understand it correctly, it can also create frustration, confusion, and even disappointment. So today I want to break this down from a real matchmaker's perspective. What effort actually looks like, how to recognize it, and why so many people, both men and women, misread it. And I want to anchor us in this truth first. God is not the author of confusion. It says in 1 Corinthians 14:3 , for God is not a God of confusion, but
Effort Makes Interest Visible
Renee Richelof peace. So if something feels constantly unclear, we need to pay attention to that. What I see is a matchmaker. Let's pull back the curtain for a moment. I have watched hundreds of connections unfold, first date, second dates, relationships that move forward and ones that don't. And one of the most consistent patterns I see is this. When someone is genuinely interested, you don't have to chase clarity. Whether it's a man pursuing a woman or a woman leaning in with intention and openness, there is movement, there is effort, there is follow-through, not perfection, but presence. And this applies to both men and women listening right now. Effort is how interest becomes visible. Effort equals priority. Let's simplify this. People make time for what matters to them, not perfectly, but consistently. And I want to be really clear because I work with incredible men too. Many men are leading businesses, carrying responsibility, building their future. But when they need a woman, they are truly excited about. They make space, they plan ahead, they follow up, they pursue with intention. And the same is true for women. When a woman is truly interested, she is receptive, she is responsive, and she is invested emotionally. Effort goes both ways. And this is where scripture gives us such a grounded lens in James 2:7. In other words, what you say
Actions Matter More Than Potential
Renee Richelneeds to be backed by what we do. And that applies in dating. This is where so many people get stuck because I hear this all the time from both sides. They're a really good person. They have such a good heart. I just feel like maybe they need more time. And again, that may all be true, but here's what I've learned. As a matchmaker, a good person who is not showing up consistently is still not the right person for you. The Bible says in Matthew 7:16 , not by their potential, not by their intentions, by their fruit, by what their actions consistently produce. And if the fruit is inconsistency, confusion, or lack of effort, that's information.
Inconsistency Feels Like Anxiety
Renee RichelMixed signals. Let's talk about something important because this goes both ways. Mixed signals aren't just something women experience from men, men experience this too. I've had male clients say, she says she's interested, but I barely hear from her. She canceled plans. I don't know where I stand. And I've had women say the exact same thing. So let's level the playing field. Signals are not mixed, they are inconsistent. Because when someone is aligned, when they are ready, when they are intentional, there is clarity, there is steadiness, there is peace, and that peace matters deeply. Colossians 3:15. If your dating life feels like anxiety, guessing, or emotional ups and downs, that's something to pay attention to and to not ignore. Now, here's the deeper level.
Why We Override Red Flags
Renee RichelBecause most people do see the signals, they just override them. Why? Because they see potential, they've invested time, they don't want to start over, they feel a strong connection early on. And sometimes they confuse emotional chemistry with long-term alignment. But I want to remind you of Proverbs 4:23. Rounding your heart doesn't mean being closed off. It means being wise with your investment. It means not overgiving in a situation that isn’t meeting you.
What Real Effort Looks Like
Renee RichelLet's make this extremely practical. Real effort looks like consistent communication, clear intention, making and keeping plan, following through, emotional availability, forward movement. And this is important. Effort is not gender specific, it's character specific. A man should pursue, a woman should be receptive and responsive, but both should be contributing to the connection. Because a healthy relationship is mature. And when it is mature, you feel it. You're not guessing, you're not chasing, you're not questioning your work. This is where we bring it with. Because this isn't about becoming rigid or guarded, it's about becoming alert, aligned with truth, aligned with deep, aligned with what God calls for you. Because love, real God-centered love, 1 Corinthians 13:4
Peace As The Relationship Test
Renee Richelthrough 7, is consistent, it is honoring, and it is studying. Not perfect, but not confusing. So if you find yourself constantly asking, do they like me? Where is this going? Am I overthinking this? Pause and ask a better question. What is the effort showing? So as we close today, I have to leave you with this.
Closing Reminders And Next Steps
Renee RichelYou should not have to convince someone to choose you. You should not have to demonstrate interest. And you should not have to carry a connection on your own. The right person will move you. And when you do, it will feel like peace. Thank you so much for being here with me today. If this spoke to you, share it with someone, man or woman, who may need this reminder. And as always, we are praying for you, believing in you, for a love that is clear, intentional, and aligned with everything God has for your life. I'll see you on the next 1 True Talks.
