So how did yokomis come to be? Well, yokomis, obviously, is a holiday celebrating Nikoli Yokic, and it was the day that he was put into the starting lineup for good, and that day changed the Nuggets franchise history. So the day was December 15th 2016. Yokic was in his second year and he was good, but obviously he wasn't in all time great like he is now. But we also had another young center named Yusuf Nurkic, and the team was struggling. They got off to a slow start. It was kind of clunky because the Nuggets were trying to play two big men at one time, so Yusuf Nurkic and Yokic were playing at the same time and neither one of them is a power forward. Both of them are natural centers and so they were trying it, they were trying to make it work, but it just wasn't going well at all.

The Nuggets ended up being 9 and 16 before yokomis and it got so bad that Yokic actually went to coach Malone and said coach, this isn't working, just bring me off the bench. Because he knew that Nurkic and himself just could not play together, just wasn't good basketball. And so he even volunteered to come off the bench and, according to the story, coach Malone I think he thought about it and just said Nikola, jokic is our center, he's going to be our center of the future. And so he made the decision to put Jokic in the starting lineup as the starting center and Nirkic would come off the bench. Now they won their first game and I'd love to tell you that Jokic had 40 points and a triple double and all that good stuff. He had a pretty average game, but it was a turning point.

I think the Nuggets really started winning some games and they developed what we now call Jokic Ball, where kind of the offense centers around him. He's such an amazing passer that he is unlike any other superstar where he touches the ball quite a bit, but he's always looking just to let other people score. What the right move is to play good team basketball. And so the Nuggets obviously, years later, would go on to win the championship, and a lot of Nuggets fans look back to December 15th 2016, as the day that really led to that championship. So that is Yokemas and that is what we're celebrating this week. So mark December 15th on your calendar, tell your friends about Yokemas and let's celebrate together.
