Speaker 2:

Hey everybody, I'm excited to be chatting with Nancy Massoud from Locked In Wellness Welcome.

Speaker 3:

Nancy, hello, how are you?

Speaker 2:

We're going to talk about yo-yo dieting, weight maintenance, how people can get off this roller coaster of losing five pounds, gaining five pounds and all those things. Do you want to talk about how people fall into the cycle of yo-yo dieting and how people can start to identify the patterns in their life?

Speaker 3:

the patterns in their life. Absolutely, yo-yo dieting is a big deal. We see clients complain about yo-yo dieting. Range from one year to 50, 60 years of their life on some sort of a diet and yo-yo diet. It gets really frustrating, of course, at that point and that's why they reach to us to say, hey, how can we stop the pattern of yo-yo dieting? Well, yo-yo diet is really to me.

Speaker 3:

When somebody comes in and talk about yo-yo diet I say the first thing is they're stuck to a number. They're looking for a number that is driving, telling them about their health. They measure their health with a number. They're looking for a number that is driving, telling them about their health. They measure their health with a number, not how they're feeling or if there's any underlying condition that needs to be addressed to help with weight loss. We start with what causes the weight gain. When they're yo-yo diet. They're not looking at the causes of weight gain. They're just looking at a short-term fix to the weight gain that they have. So it's not measured through muscle. They're not addressing am I gaining muscle? Am I losing muscle? You know fats, you know, yeah, sure, you can lose fats, but what does that entail? With quick weight loss. We tend to lose more muscle if it's not done properly. We see that happen because we're not treating the issue that caused the weight gain from the beginning.

Speaker 2:

How can somebody shift from short-term let me get to the right number on the scale mentality to having a long-term health and wellness approach and maybe get to the root cause of weight gain?

Speaker 3:

The best way we can say for situations like this is that finding the end of the line. You know what the pattern? If someone is on a keto diet, they lose 50 pounds. They get off the keto diet, they gain 60 pounds. Well, that's what we consider a yo-yo diet. So that means, yes, it is a short-term fix, but for long-term it's not working. It's maybe putting more physical stress on their body or emotional stress on their body, and it's a rebound, so their body's rebounding. So they may be going into ketosis. Which keto diet is going into? The goal is to get you into ketosis, but when they come out, the body doesn't realize that introducing carbs back to their diet causes their body to rebound and fat cells to mutate.

Speaker 3:

The first thing to know is what foods trigger weight gain. We need to go backward to the main component when this person started to gain weight. How long ago did that happen? Finding out if it's related to food. Find out it's related to stress. Is it an emotional eating issue? Are they craving sugar? Is it insulin resistance issue? What, not eating enough?

Speaker 3:

Okay, some people come in and they barely eat and they're gaining weight and they're confused why they're gaining weight if they're not eating. Your body needs nutrients, so there could be an issue there. But find the underlining, the cause of the weight gain first. Then get them to their goal weight in a healthier pattern. Making sure that they're gaining muscle because it helps fat burning. Making sure that they're losing a visceral fat, reducing inflammation in the body that causes mutation of fat cells. To start with, finding out what kind of metabolism they have a good metabolism that we need to work on. Enhancing what minerals their body is deficient in Sometimes heavy metals can be a contributor to weight gain. We're looking at the core issue inside that causes weight gain and then focusing that back out to the outside body. So that's the easiest way to maintain it, because their body is doing the weight loss in a safe, consistent pattern, not rebounding and able to maintain the weight loss.

Speaker 2:

We know lots of people are going on medications for weight loss. Can you talk about how that's impacting the yo-yo dieting and weight loss and what you can offer those trying to get off them?

Speaker 3:

Correct? That's a really good question because what we're seeing is people getting on different medications, injections to help with the weight loss journey. It's a startup for weight loss but the problem is, when you're off of it, how your body's going to respond to that. We have seen that people tend to gain the weight back or have to be consistent or go on to a maintenance phase of the medication or injection. If somebody comes in on the shots and they have success, I still look for the core cause of the weight gain. If I treat that situation, then when they're weaned off the medication we don't have to worry about rebound or weight gain. So they're not yo-yo dieting anymore and we help identify the issues.

Speaker 3:

We also focus on muscle because we know certain medications and shots and we have seen that people lose muscle with that as well. So they get really fatigued. They don't feel good. So what we do with those clients? We help them get their energy back. We help them build the muscle back, get them all the nutrients, because they can't really eat too much. We push more nutrients back into their able to help them get all the nutrients back and help them gain strength, power and energy so that when they are done taking it. They don't have to fear dieting again or gaining weight back.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, In a previous episode we talked about mineral testing. I imagine that when you mineral test some of these folks, they probably are missing some key nutrients and minerals and not impacting them.

Speaker 3:

Oh, absolutely. We see that all the time. Minerals are essential elements in the body. We all need nutrients to feel better. When you're lacking certain minerals and certain imbalances, like we talked about in the past, makes a big difference. This is where we start to get all the key elements back into the body so that they get the strength and build the essential elements back and feel better.

Speaker 2:

What are some myths about dieting and weight loss that you and your team try to walk people through and coach them so they can have a better understanding and get to a place of continued health?

Speaker 3:

When someone comes in and says I want to lose 50 pounds, and they are really serious, want to start a journey, they have either something that they want to do or their doctor has advised them you got to lose weight to make sure that you feel better, or their labs are showing some some you know levels that needs to be addressed with diet and exercise. So the first thing I say we're going to work from inside out. Okay, we're going to look at the inside, figure out what is going on, focus on that. Put you on a plan that helps with information to your body. Even though you're not going to be able to do it, I put them on some sort of restriction diet. It's not aggressive.

Speaker 3:

Most people say this is the most I've eaten ever. I never eat that much. They complain about eating way too much, but they're losing weight. That's because sometimes your body needs more than you think. When we start to improve your metabolism, you have to eat.

Speaker 3:

We first look at that person's body. Your plan is so unique. I write a plan based on their food sensitivity and not based on a basic standard weight loss program, and it's not a split-sided kind of plan. It's more personalized to that person and that person's need. So they present that exercise seven days a week and they love their exercise. They don't want to give it up. Well, I have to make sure that they eat more. It's also dependent on what their food sensitivity looks like, so that we can reduce the inflammation as much as possible to help them with their journey. They feel better, they're more better, their energy is better. That's the first thing. A lot of clients come in and they're like oh my God, I lost so many inches. It's amazing, I can't believe it. It's not about energy scale, it's about how you're feeling. Clients never lie. We need to make sure they feel better in their body. That's the winning piece of this journey.

Speaker 2:

What are some of the strategies you use in your office to help folks with weight loss? I know you do some laser acupuncture. Is that something that can help someone who's on a weight?

Speaker 3:

loss journey? Absolutely. We have multiple different lasers. We have the acupuncture laser, which is sense frequencies to the body, and we, you know, enhance metabolism. We also have the lipo contouring lasers. It helps lose inches. We apply it in the areas that this person would like to lose more inches, and we do that. Some people, you know, they feel just, they just want to lose a little inches. It's not about just a number scale too. So they were like, oh, I wish I can lose, you know, a few inches here and there. We have the lipolaser that helps contour that area and gets rid of cellulite as well. We also have a green laser for inflammation, lymphatic as well. So, and that also, we focus on the lymphatic system and, of course, when you get the lymphatic system working, toxins are coming out and the metabolism is in a better place.

Speaker 2:

And what about alimentation? Can you talk about the success you've had with people putting back minerals and nutrients they're missing and how that's helped their weight loss?

Speaker 3:

Absolutely. A lot of clients come in and we look at their mineral tests and see severe deficiencies. Or sometimes they're taking so many vitamins that their body does not need, so it's going into a deposit. If they have a mineral deficiency, we supplement what their body needs. I'm not a person that if a client comes in and complains of fatigue, lack of sleep, this or that, and I put them on 20 different supplements because I don't really know if he or she needs all of that. That's why we do the mineral test to see what true supplements this person is going to need to help them with their journey. It may not be just weight loss, it could be anything else, but we definitely look at that as well.

Speaker 3:

The turnaround, you know, when people feel better it's a week to two weeks. They see changes right away which motivates them to continue the journey and focus more on their journey of health. It can go from somebody that never had good sleep to, oh my gosh, I'm sleeping like a baby. We see people that have had severe diarrhea for so long and, you know, when we've balanced their minerals, now they're actually going normal. Or the opposite constipation. They have suffered with constipation for a very long time and now they're regular. It really depends on the person, but we definitely have seen major changes when we start to balance those minerals. The best thing about it they don't have to be on a lot of supplements to feel better. Okay, so that's not about how many I can add or put someone on, it's what they need. That's a big thing for me to make sure they only take what they need, not too much.

Speaker 2:

What is the role of their emotional well-being and mental well-being, and how do you address that in your office?

Speaker 3:

Oh yeah, emotional and physical. Some people when they're yo-yoing, it's very emotional. They feel good, look good, and suddenly gain 30 pounds in no time. They feel good, look good, and suddenly gain 30 pounds in no time. They're not feeling good. I have so many clients First time they see me they say I feel good when the scale is down. Okay, and that's like the response to how are you feeling? Well, it depends on my scale. Okay, well, that's an emotional. So then, course, they get, you know, discouraged by the scale. So then they jump into emotional eating because now it's like, forget it, nothing is working, so I'm just going to sit there and eat what I want to eat. It's not working because they're introducing foods that their body may not be able to tolerate or cause inflammation. Then they're not going to feel good and that vicious cycle starts again they jump on the scale and they don't feel good.

Speaker 3:

It's a vicious cycle. So they're connected in many ways. Now would the physical emotions start first, then the emotional? Not necessarily. It could be either one. They may have one versus the other, or they may have two and that's a huge one. We measure adrenal insufficiency or activity. We see if the adrenals are highly active and how to address that. Hydration has a huge part of emotional well-being and lack of certain nutrients. Also, when they're heavier, they feel heavy. It's hard to get motivated to exercise, they don't feel good, the exercising part gets shoved to the side because they don't feel good, inflammation starts to accumulate, they get joint pain and it's a vicious cycle. If both of them work the same, the bottom line is they're not going to feel good and can lead to other issues.

Speaker 2:

You mentioned water. Can you talk about the differences between alkaline water and regular water and which people should be drinking? It used to be. There was one type of bottled water. Now we go in and there's a million to choose from and you know how does somebody figure out what's best for them?

Speaker 3:

Absolutely. That goes back to how their body is. Are they hydrated? Are they absorbing water properly? How much water retention do they have? We measure that with body composition. We look at intracellular to extracellular water. Based on that, we decide which direction to go. Of course, alkaline water is more hydrating water. You've got the alkaline, you've got the electrolyte water and then you also have the regular water, distilled water, purified. We will be able to tell them which water works best for them in terms of hydration, because some people come in and they're drinking so much water.

Speaker 3:

The more water they drink, the more bathroom visits they have. They still feel thirsty and it's like oh my gosh, I can't drink anymore. Their lips are dry, they feel dry mouth and when that happens it's like how much more can I drink? I cannot drink anymore. They're in the bathroom all the time because of water and they're not drinking the right water. It could be water resistance. Their body's just flushing. We look at these issues because that can trigger weight gain. If they're dehydrated. That's a marker for me to look at, to make sure that they're gaining muscle, they're losing weight, they're hydrated, their skin is feeling better. Most clients, if they have that situation of the water and they don't know they're drinking normal water. They don't know the differences and I switched their water. They feel this change and it's like, it's fascinating. It's just their face starts to glow. It's amazing how, when you're hydrated, how good you feel. It's a very important part of this journey here.

Speaker 2:

Anything else you'd like to speak to about long-term weight maintenance and what you guys offer at LockedIn Wellness?

Speaker 3:

Here at LockedIn Wellness. What we focus on, yes, getting person to their goal weight, but it's more and that's, I call it, the easy part. Okay, but what we really here. My goal is to help everyone maintain their goal weight without being on a diet. It's a lifestyle change finding the right stuff for their body and enjoying it. We should not be restricted at all times. We should not be on a diet all the time. It's the change in lifestyle figuring out issues that causes them you know the triggers and eliminating that. And that is the key with our plan here. That's why we have so many clients come in. They want to put an end to yo-yo dieting.

Speaker 3:

The focus here is to help you avoid yo-yo dieting, is to help you get to a maintenance plan that is suitable, easy to follow forever for a long term, with too much fluctuation.

Speaker 3:

I mean, of course we all fluctuate two pounds up, two pounds down, that's normal. Nothing beats normal fluctuation of normal body. But otherwise, this is where we start off and this is what we target here and we focus on. And, of course, course, when clients come in, they learn so much more about themselves and that motivates them because they know so much. Now they know what to do if they feel different, if they start to feel fatigue again, they have all the answers for their bodies. They can relate back to figuring out what to do to help with that or, you know, go back to saying, okay, what did I do wrong that could have done this or made me feel this way? Usually they got it. We teach everyone. Of course, everybody's different, so each one person, each individual here, has a different plan. But each person learned their body like anyone else, and they get to know their body, what the best for them and how to keep it optimal with optimal health.

Speaker 2:

That's what we are here for Locking into better health, and can you share where folks can find you or how they can contact you?
