Hi everyone and welcome back to learning languages in society with Gabi. Today's episode is all about accents how they evolve what they say about your personal story and why they are a Unique reflection of your Journey through life and language. Accents are in just a way to pronounce words they carry traces of where you've been the people you've met and even the challenges you've overcome for me my Accent tells a story of Transformation one that started when i was fourteen years old and struggling to learn English maybe your Accent has a story too and today will unpack why that something to Celebrate so stick around because by the end of this episode you might just see your own Accent as badge of honor.
A testament to your experiences and a marker of your Growth so lemme start with my own experience when i was fourteen i was really struggling with English in school to be honest i was flanking English all the time so mi mother determined to help found a teacher through a newspaper ad. He wasn't like any teacher had had before from the very first session he only spoke English to me.
Ah, no. Spanish allowed not even for simple responses so at first he was quite intimidating. But with that approach did was force me to internalize English grammar and sentence structure almost subconsciously so he'd ask me questions la an ad struggle to respond and then he'd guide me gently but firmly toward the right pronunciation and phrasing his strong British accents became my model and.
Then i made a delivery choice to shift to an american Accent why well it wasn't just about my personal preference it was practical British accents are often closely ti to original identity ah and i found that speaking with one as a foreign could invite scrutiny people might wonder why i was imitating a specific British Accent or assume i was pretending to be someone i wasn't.
Contra the american Accent felt more inclusive y represented melting pot content mattered more than form so spent a year with this teacher honing my skills and shaping my pronunciation that Foundation became invaluable when i later move to Leon France. France i applied the same approach i mimed the way people spoke around me and tried responding kind imer myself in the language Accent and rhythm of speech help me adapt quickly over time i developed a Distinct French Accent that matched the environment i was living in.
What i realized during this time is that accents accents don't exist in isolation they're shaped by the places you are living the people you interact with and the situations you find yourself in if you listen closely to someone speaking a second or third language you can sometimes hear echoes of their past for example I've met people who speak spanish with traces of italian synex.
Or German intonation this you where someone has been or what languages they grew up with it's like a roadmap of their life experiences reflected in the way they speak but that's the beauty of accs they aren. Just a tool for a communication there a piece of your history every word you pronounce carries fragments of your Journey the teachers who corrected you their friends you their friends who teach you and the moments you struggle to be understood.
But less also acknowledge the challenges saxons can bring sometimes they make it self conscious other times they invite and wanted attention or even judgment my case deciding to adopt an american Accent was eh was way to avoid a necessary scrutiny braons can also be a source of pride they show effort adaptability and resilience think about it if you have learned a new language as an Adult.
You've done something remarkable your Accent has proved that you stepped out of your comfort zone to connect with a new culture from a practical standpoint having a clear and comprehensible Accent can be important especially in professional settings but there's no need to aim for perfection instead focus on communication clarity is more valuable than sounding like a native speaker i want to emphasize this point there's.
Beauty having an Accent it's a marker of your experiences your adaptability and your courage every mispronunciation every phrase you've stumbled over has contributed to the way you speak today for me my English Accent reflects the hours i spent struggling with a teacher who refuse to let me speak spanish my French Accent reminds me of my time en Lyon surrounded by a culture that was completely different from my own.
When you meet someone with an Accent you are hearing a story maybe it's the story of a family who moved across the world for better opportunities or the story of someone who started lading to the night determined to masters second language accents show effort they show that someone was brave out to start over in a language often in a new country so worth.
Worth celebrating so what can we take away from this well first don't be ashamed of your Accent is a testament to your Journey your hard work and your resilience second when you hear someone else's Accent to listen closely think about the story might be telling about worth of been what they overcome how they're connecting you with that very moment finally remember that learning a language is.
About more than just words it's about connection culture and personal Growth your actions is just one part of that bigger picture anyway. This does not mean that accents do not matter sometimes you really have to bring the effort to be to make yourself understood in a different place or sometimes it is true that in some context you might not want to sound way to foreign so make an effort to sound as native.
As you can is probably gonna give you a lot of advantages too so i wanna clarify that part as well anyway thank you for turning into learning languages since society with gaby as usual if today's episode resonated with you please don't forget to subscribe and share it with your friends and the next time you feel self conscious about your Accent while remember this it's not a flaw it's a reflection of everything you've accomplished see you next time Guys and happy language learning.
