Mechanical ventilation applies positive pressure breaths to patients with impaired ventilation, compromised airways, or respiratory failure. Respiratory therapists need a thorough understanding of mechanical ventilation, airway mechanics, and human anatomy to effectively manage intubated or tracheostomized patients. The three primary indications for invasive mechanical ventilation are airway compromise due to disease, hyperventilation resulting from impaired drive or gas exchange difficulties, and hypoxemic respiratory failure.
