chapter three verse one. Likewise, you wives be in subjection to your own husbands that if any, obey not the word. They also may without the word be warned by the conversation of the wives Now. In this particular verse here, we have the unfortunate relationship in which Darius, uh, a saved wife and an unsaved husband. Apparently, the wife became a Christian after they had married. Peter instructs the saved wife. He says, likewise, which means in the same manner. He is continuing his thought from chapter 2. Just like the servants are to be subject to their masters, so must the saved wife, to her unsaved husband because he is her head. She is to continue on in the same position of being in subjection to him. Now, if the unsaved husband wants his saved wife to go to the club, should the saved wife submit to that? Absolutely not. We see this clearly in the next verse. Look at verse number two. While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. A Christian wife must live very carefully before an unsaved husband. She is to preach a wordless sermon by her pure life. So this tells us she is not to do anything ungodly that he asks her to do. no. No, she is to live a pure life. She is to preach a wordless sermon by her pure life where she lives before him. The most effective method for a saved wife to win her husband to Christ is living a holy life in the fear of God before him. Jesus said, let your light so shine that men might see your good works and glorify your father which is in heaven. Whose adorning, let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel. But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. Now Peter shows here that sex appeal does not win an unsaved man to Christ. Being beautiful on the inside, possessing a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God, is the thing that draws them to Christ. Alright. Verse 5. For after this manner in the old time, the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands. Even as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him Lord, whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement. Now let me read these two verses from the Living Bible. It says this. that kind of deep beauty was seen in the saintly women of old, who trusted God and fitted in with their husband's plans. Sarah, for instance, obeyed her husband's Abraham, honoring him as the head of the house. And if you do the same, you will be following in her steps like good daughters and doing what is right. Then you would not need to fear. Offending your husbands. Listen. It's something to note here that Sarah was such a beautiful woman. That several kings wanted her as a wife. And for a king to want you as his wife, you had to be beautiful. Because the king could have whoever he wanted to have. And so, Several kings wanted her, but all she wanted was Abraham. She loved her some Abraham. She called him Lord. She looked up to Abraham. Listen, it is wonderful when a wife can look up to her husband. Think about this husband. If your wife look up to you, then you are doing something right. Alright, verse number 7. Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honor unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers Be not hindered. Now, the Apostle Peter here is giving instructions to the saved husbands. He now talks to the saved husbands. Here he instructs the husband to reverence his wife. Listen, if we refuse to respect, to have high regard for our wives, our prayers will be hindered. Our prayers will be put on hold. God instructs the husband to be a husband of understanding. Husbands we ought to conduct our affairs with our wives with a gentle spirit in a soft tender loving way. Verse eight. Finally be all of one mind having compassion one of another love as brethren be pitiful be courteous. Now the word here pitiful means tender hearted. The word courteous means Humble minded. Peter says here be tender hearted and be humble minded. Alright, verse number nine. Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing, but contrary wise, blessing. Knowing that ye are there unto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. For he that would love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak, Nogal. Let him extue evil and do good. Let him seek peace and ensue it. For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers. For the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. And who is he that will harm you if ye be followers of that which is good? And if ye suffer for righteousness, Sake, happy are ye, and be not afraid of that terror, neither be troubled. But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear. Here in this passage we see five principles to obtaining the good life. Five principles to obtaining the good life. Principle number one, control your tongue. Number two, keep your lips from telling lies or deceitful things. Number three, hate evil. Number four, do good. Number five, go after peace. Seek to be peacemakers. All right, then he says in verse 15, for us to always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks us why we believe the way we do, and we must do it in a gentle and respectful way. Listen, there is a right way and a wrong way to do everything. When we present the word of God to others, we must do it in a gentle and respectful way. Alright? Verse 16, Having a good conscience, that whereas they speak evil of you as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accused your good conversation in Christ. For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing than for evildoing. For Christ also had once suffered for sins. The jest for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the spirit, by which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison, which sometime were disobedient, when once the long suffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. Now, verse 19 is one of the most misunderstood verses of scripture. The key word to this entire passage is in verse 20. It is the little word, when. When did Christ preach to the spirits in prison? It says, When once the long suffering of God waited in the days of Noah, for a hundred and twenty years, Noah had preached the word of God. He saved his family, but no one else. It was the Spirit of Christ who spoke through Noah. In Noah's day, in Christ's day, those who rejected Noah's message were in prison. The thought is that Christ's death meant nothing to them just as it means nothing to a great many people today, who as a result will also come into Judgement. Alright, verse 21. The life figure where unto even baptism do also now save us, not, not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God. by the resurrection of Jesus Christ who has gone into heaven and is on the right hand of God, angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him. Now the word baptism here is the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Our fate in the resurrection of Jesus Christ brought the work of the Holy Spirit into our lives and regenerated us.
