Turning Trauma into Triumph - Colette Martin's Story and the Ongoing Battle Against Domestic Violence
Welcome to this episode of The FEMCAST, where we delve into the inspiring and courageous journey of Colette Martin.
Listener discretion is advised, as this episode discusses violence.
In 1997, Colette survived a brutal attack by an ex-boyfriend who broke into her home and stabbed her 37 times. Despite the immense trauma and ongoing battle with PTSD, Colette refused to let this horrific experience define her. Instead, she transformed her pain into a powerful mission to help other women and raise awareness about intimate partner violence.
In December 2022, Colette's advocacy played a crucial role in the passing of Bill 17, The Disclosure to Protect Against Intimate Partner Violence Act.
This legislation empowers police to inform individuals if their partner has a history of intimate partner violence.
In this episode, Colette shares her story of survival, from the initial signs of coercive and controlling behavior in her relationship to the terrifying night of the attack and the insensitive remarks she faced afterward from a doctor.
Her resilience and determination to transform her trauma into a force for good have led her to support women worldwide.
In July 2023, she participated in the documentary "She Is Your Neighbour," further amplifying her message and commitment to ending intimate partner violence.
Join us as we explore Colette's journey and the impact of her work in creating safer communities for women everywhere.
