Rumeal Season 1 Episode 1

Ever been left hanging by a show's abrupt cancellation just when it started getting good? That's exactly how I'm feeling, and I'm here to vent about it! Join me, Rumeal, as I launch our new segment, "Netflix & Never Again," where I talk all things prematurely canceled. In this episode, I unleash my frustration over two series that were snatched away from us far too soon: "First Kill" and "The Imperfects." Both had so much potential—an enticing vampire-meets-monster-hunter narrative and a sci-fi tale with a dash of X-Men flair—but Netflix pulled the plug way too early, citing viewer statistics that seem to miss the point. Let's unravel why these shows deserved to continue and explore what made them so captivating.

Not all hope is lost, though. There's cause for celebration as we finally see the renewal of "Supercell," a series that I can't stop raving about. Following a group of six Black strangers in London, this show tackles the complex genetics of sickle cell, intertwining personal stories with broader social issues. I can't wait to share why this series holds a special place in my heart and the excitement of its return. So tune in for a whirlwind of emotions, from rants to rejoicing, and join the conversation by sharing your thoughts and series suggestions for future episodes.

Speaker 1:

All right, welcome to Straight Gay Reviews. It's your boy, ramil SGR. Whatever you want to call me, just don't call me late for dinner. We're here to talk about a new segment that I like to call Netflix and Never Again, and a few shows had me in a chokehold in 2022.

Speaker 1:

2022 was a very interesting year, you know, two years after COVID and, like good old Netflix, good old Netflix had to come through and they had to make me feel real small and you see how, like Netflix is taking up the screen and I'm like, oh, my goodness, they were, they real small and it, it, it made me small. Well, we are here today to talk about some things. The thing we're here to talk about first is a show called First Kill. Now, first Kill. I know it's a little soap opera-y blah blah, blah, blah blah. You know it had about shoot eight episodes. So I gave Netflix eight hours of my life and it was Netflix and never again. And what does that mean? We watched a show that ain't gonna never show a second season, even though they left us on cliffhanger, and blah, blah, blah, blah blah. It was about a girl named Juliet who was a vampire, and Calliope, who was a monster hunter and essentially Juliet came from this vampire. As family who had powers, they could do tons of different things and their mothers hated each other and then, like I mean, they had some attractive family members and then one of the brothers and I I'm like trying not to spoil it just in case you guys decide to see it. But what I'm trying to say is this Netflix, y'all know y'all wrong. Even though this was a little soap opera, it was kind of cutesy, like y'all left me on a cliffhanger. Y'all left me on a cliffhanger and I'm like, okay, you know it, you know it's, it's, it's kind of cute. You know, I see what y'all did here, but you know what the reviews probably is. What did it in? Although, if you look at Google, we got a 4.5. We got a 4.5 out of 2,000 reviews. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 59. Imdb 6.5. But again, these are pretty good for a Netflix series and this is the first time it premiered. Um, why was it cancelled? Netflix excuse for canceling first kill was not enough. People watch the show to its bitter end. So if no more than 50 of the people finish a show's first season, it's unlikely to be renewed for a second season. Well, y'all got the money. The special effects wasn't even there. Y'all got the money.

Speaker 1:

And then another show that hurt my feelings, the imperfects. Now, if y'all haven't seen this one, this is another one that I, you know I kind of fell into. It was about a siren, a chupacabra and a succubus, and that was a joke, like the. The premise of the show was that these people had these powers and you know they all had, I guess, abilities. So the synopsis, let's go ahead and read it.

Speaker 1:

You know, three seattle-based adults avia scientists, want a comic book artist and tilda singer turned into monsters after after undergoing an experimental gene therapy. The trio subsequently decides to hunt down the scientists responsible for their transformation, dr Alex Sarkoff, and force them to make them human again. They are joined by Dr Sidney Burke, a scientist who can assist them. Tilda again, she becomes I apologize, I called her a succubus. She is a banshee. The succubus is Abby, who releases those pheromones, and when she releases those pheromones, she essentially puts you under her control. And Juan ends up being a chupacabra. And you know, there are some interesting things. This was 10 episodes, so this was 10 hours of my life that, sadly, I wish I was getting back. But I'm not getting back, and when I tell you I was kind of sad that they left us on a cliffhanger for it.

Speaker 1:

The reception, the show was called fine, she was praised for a decent note reminds her of a match of the X-Men, fringe and Riverdale and the blends of five devices. I mean I liked it. I X-Men, fringe and Riverdale and the Blitz and Supply Devices. I mean I liked it. I was shocked that it didn't get a second season, but it did get canceled. And again, this is Netflix and Never Again.

Speaker 1:

There will be other segments and other shows that we're going to talk about, but that was one of the shows that kind of like got me First Kill and again the Imperfects. Those were two shows I was just like, really, really, I liked how their powers displayed. And the Imperfects because again, she would have to spray a different Abby would have to spray stuff to stop people from being crazy over her, and she eventually figured out her powers could trigger other things too. So, and while he was a trooper copper, he learned how to control his powers. But the screeching with tilda, it kind of got wild because she um and again, this is so you can see and sorry for any spoilers. She learned how to control her powers through communication devices like a cell phone, so she used her screech. Her screech was deafening and she essentially unalive somebody by doing that. I can't say that I really remembered First Kill the way. I'd like to say that I remember First Kill but it still, to me, was good enough for it to get a second season. I mean, there have been some shows on Netflix. I'm like what you doing, what you doing, but I felt like it had a decent cast and they were hour-long episodes, like that was the thing that kind of cracked me up. And again, I don't know, they've even tried to renew it with different renewal efforts.

Speaker 1:

A month after the cancellation, fans around the world continued the efforts to the series, get renewed and boost a different streaming service. The social media outcry was taken by observers as proof that there is a popular market for LGBTQ plus TV shows with queer characters and their stories. In the same style as Riverdale's First Kill resonated with some fans because it was a queer storyline with a black representation and on the list of fan favorites netflix canceled. The show has been compared to a must watch, other than shows like fate of the wing saga, which again was a pretty good show. The only reason I'm not saying netflix will never get on that one was because it had a second season. Um, because the focus was on young girls with magical, mystical capabilities.

Speaker 1:

First kills runner, first kill showrunner has hopes that the series will get renewed. Because of fans' effort, us Weekly included First Kills in the list of shows canceled too soon, in November 2022. So again, it's one of those shows that I feel, and again I try to sit in my business, but it's like, okay, make it, make sense to me, and I don't know. Those are just two of the shows that I feel like should have never been canceled. But we're here now, so tell me what you guys think, let me know in the comments.

Speaker 1:

Is there another show you'd like me to review or watch? I am so, so, so happy that Supercell got renewed. That was an amazing series and, again, if you have not seen Supercell, it takes place with six strangers in central London and they're all Black and the reason why they have Supercell is because their parents have the sickle cell trait, which I actually believe. They're not Carrie, I don't have sickle cell, but if I happen to have children with someone who has a sickle cell trait. I can pass the trait to somebody who has. You know my child would have sickle cells at that point. So, aside from that, this is SGR, your boy, signing off. If you guys have anything else you'd like to talk about, feel free to you know. Put it in the comments. Let me know how you feel. Talk to you guys soon. Bye.
