Finding the best therapy and therapist for your neurodivergent child can be overwhelming. Evaluating your options and their potential benefits while looking out for the emotional well-being of your child feels like a heavy responsibility with potentially lifelong impact. Trusting your resources is important, but trusting your instinct is vital. Welcome to the Tender Resilience Podcast, providing encouragement and maybe some wisdom to the tender resilient parents of neurodivergent kids. If you have a child with ADHD, autism, OCD, anxiety, auditory processing disorder, learning disabilities, andor any other neurodiverse condition, this is our spot to cheer each other on. This podcast isn't designed to give a medical diagnosis or psychological advice for you or your child, and there's no artificial intelligence, just a lot of real-life experience and a genuine desire to lift up moms and dads so that you realize what an amazing parent you truly are. When it comes to therapies for neurodivergent kids, there is no magic formula for success. If there was one incredible therapy with one amazing therapist, the wait list would be never-ending. For now, we have a long list of possibilities depending on your child's diagnosis. You are probably all too familiar with the acronyms. CBT, ABA, ACT, DBT, EMDR, SLP, OT. Many of these have their fans and detractors. Some may be suggested by your child's physician, mental health professional, or school. Some discovered by your own research or recommendation of others. Many of us have even received conflicting recommendations from our various resources. Although selecting the right therapy is very important, finding the right provider can be even more critical. Of course, you want a provider that has reputable experience, but you don't want someone who acts like a know-it-all and jumps to conclusions about your child. The right provider gets to know them and adjusts the therapy to your child, not the other way around. Research shows that the positive outcome of the therapy hinges on the relationship your child has to the provider. If you sense that the provider isn't taking time to understand your child and develop trust, then it's time to have a discussion. No matter how many college degrees are hanging on their wall, there's no one who understands your child better than you do. As parents, we all have a BS degree, meaning that when it comes to our child, we can spot BS faster than anyone. If you're investing time, copays, maybe even out-of-pocket expense and emotion in services for your child, you deserve a return on your investment. The provider should respect your child and you.
