Why Traffic Beats Going Viral
Hey, welcome to the Ali D Show. Today I'm gonna talk to you about your website traffic, and I have a question for you. Does your website traffic just absolutely suck-erooski? Meaning it is not good, and you feel like no matter what you do, you are totally invisible out there. No one's finding your website, and you're just hoping and praying one day that you're gonna go viral because you think that's how people are actually gonna find your website and buy from you. If this feels like you, and you've been struggling with website traffic, or if you don't even know what I'm talking about and you're like, "I don't even really understand website traffic," this episode's gonna be for you. Because what I'm gonna do is give you three super simple things that you could start implementing immediate- like, immediately, like today-skis, in order to get your website traffic up. Because here's the truth of the matter Your website traffic is one of the most important stats and pieces of data that you will need to follow as an e-commerce business owner, as someone who sells physical products on Shopify. When you understand how to grow your website traffic, everything else will fall into place. Literally everything. Because the more website traffic you get, the more sales you get, the better conversions you get, and it all stems from you focusing on this stat and making sure you're not letting this get left behind, because most people don't find this glamorous. What they do find glamorous is, "How am I gonna go viral on social media? How am I gonna get all these people to watch my video that I spent hours making, that doesn't involve just, like, my mom and my best friend liking it and commenting on it," right? This is what, like, 99% of store owners are focusing on, and it's the totally wrong thing, and it's why you don't have sales, and it's why your website traffic sucks, and it's why you feel like everybody thinks that you're just... or it's why you think you're totally invisible out there, okay? It all comes down to your website traffic. So again, today, I'm gonna focus on three things that you could start implementing immediately for your business so you can start fricking rocking and rolling. You can start actually having regular, consistent traffic. Because when you have regular, consistent traffic, you know what else you get? Regular, consistent sales, baby. And by the way, this is coming from someone, me, who runs multiple Shopify stores, okay? Remember, I've sold millions of dollars in product. There are certain things you can do to make sure you're getting your website traffic consistent people, okay? Consistent people visiting your store. So I'm gonna break down, again, three very simple things that you can start doing immediately to make this happen for yourself, okay? Because again, right now, like most people out there, and if this is you, just be like, "Ugh, I feel so called out right now," most people are out there just kind of hoping people are gonna somehow click over to your website, and you don't even have a real pla- plan or strategy to get people to your site. It really isn't even the top of your mind. Oftentimes it's either not on the top of your mind, or it's kind of at the bottom of the barrel because you're so focused on doing everything else under the sun. You forget that, like, at the end of the day, we actually gotta get some sales, and the way we do that is by getting people to our site. Getting the right people to our site. And the cool thing about what I'm gonna teach you today is these three things are way fricking easier than trying to go viral. Way easier than doing some weird random trend that feels cringe to you anyways, okay? So are you like, "Yeah, Ali, I'm feeling this," 'cause I am so over just researching trends 24/7? This episode's gonna be for you. Okay, so let's get into these three simple things.
Turn Stories Into A Catalog
Number one. This is a big one, you guys. Stop treating your Instagram stories like it's a diary. Or like you're re-sharing your own posts all the time and like that's what goes on your stories and you feel like a good business owner because at least you have something up there on your stories, right? So you're just gonna re-share your own posts or you're gonna like take pictures of the food you're eating or some random thing. You're u- just kinda using it like your diary, right? This is a big, big issue when it comes to driving your traffic, and I'm gonna tell you why. Instagram Stories is one of the fastest, easiest ways to get warm traffic, meaning people who already follow you, right? They already know about your business. They're following you. So we need to take advantage of that. It's one of the easiest ways to get people off of social media to your website and then to buy. So what I do is I tell my clients that I want them posting a minimum of five Instagram stories per day. And instead of treating it like a random behind-the-scenes, "Here's what I'm eating, here's where I'm going," or sharing your own post, use it like a shoppable catalog instead, a shoppable catalog that people can just tap through. They already know you. They already like you. Now it's your job to make sure you are showing your products to these people every single day. This is it. It's not glamorous. It's not about going viral. How can we get the people that you already work so hard to get into your audience, your current followers, to your website and get them off social media? Instagram Stories is one of the fastest, easiest, most simple ways to do this, and most people sleep on this, okay? So again, I tell my clients minimum of five Instagram stories per day that are product-related. And by the way, there's gonna be people out there, they're gonna tell you, "Oh, don't put links on your stories. Oh, da, da, da." Like, don't listen to any of that. We're business owners. We have to get conversions here. We have to get people to our site. Instagram is giving us this tool. Don't think about that, okay? Just post what I'm saying. This is going to dramatically skyrocket your traffic, and you'll see it, like, the first week you start doing this, okay? So don't listen to any of that crapola. So five stories per day on Instagram. Five slides, okay? It's gonna be so simple. I want you to post a picture of your product, lifestyle or a white background. You wanna mix it up, that would be even better. But whatever you have, picture of your product. Use the Instagram sticker link, which is in the top right corner. I think you click on, like, the little smiley face, and it shows you, like, you can tag your location, you could tag, um, you know, the time, the temperature, a GIF, like, all those things. Select the one that says Link, okay? Now it's going to give you the option to add a link to that Instagram story. And what I want you to do is copy and paste the link from your website, okay? Not your home page, not another random page, but the product's page on your website where you are looking at the actual product, okay? Copy and paste that URL. Put it in the sticker for the Instagram story. That goes under the link area. Then in the description area, you can write something fun, right? Like- "Shop the look" or "Don't miss out" or whatever. So it's, so you don't want just, like, the link showing up as the sticker. You want words to be there. So just make sure in the description you type out some words, right? The very basics, shop the whatever it is, right? Shop the jeans, get the candle, buy the thing. And that's going to be the sticker that's gonna go on top of that product, okay? And you're gonna repeat that five times every single day. Make an album in your phone that has just a ton of pictures of your products, right? This is gonna take you, like, five to 10 minutes. It's a little tedious, but five to 10 minutes that are super focused on an effort that's actually gonna get you traffic instead of five to 10 minutes of you scrolling and watching random Instagram guru people talk about random Instagram things. Like, stop doing that. Do the things that are actually going to get you conversions, and this is one of them, okay? Instagram stories, a minimum of five per day. Now, if you wanna get a little fancy, you could do, like, a video product. A product, a video, and a photo of a, a... Or, I'm sorry, a video of the product and a photo of the product, and then a video of the product and a photo of a product. You can do five different products. You could do three products and just repeat. You could do one product and do five different stories. It's really up to you, and all of them work, okay? Sometimes it's better to just sell one product five different ways on stories. But it's just, the point is, is I need you posting five stories with links to your website every single day to give these warm people that are already following you, that have already opted in and like you, to your website. Okay? Focus on that. It's going to be huge for you.
Give A Non-Buying Reason
So number two This one is a little bit controversial, okay? But it works, and it is so good, and it can literally print you money if you do it the right way. And what I wanna talk to you about is give people a reason to go to your website that actually doesn't involve buying from you, okay? I know, controversial. Like, we're sending to our website, we want them to buy. Yes, but sometimes we gotta warm them up a little bit. And again, this is the step that everybody wants to skip because they're so desperate for sales. But these steps are what actually get you sales in the long run. The chances of someone finding you and buying from you right away is very, very, very, very slim. Like, the actual statistical chance of that happening is very slim. It's, like, 1%. So 99% of the people that find you will need some warming up to you, right? No one wants to marry you on the first date. They gotta get warmed up to you, right? And eventually, if they like you and things are looking good, yeah, we go down the road of engagement, marriage, all the things. But they first have to be introduced to you, and then you have to warm them up a little bit, okay? And that's what we're doing here. So give people a reason to go to your website that doesn't involve buying from you. Ways you can do this: number one, you could run a giveaway. This is one of my favorite things that I teach my clients, and I'll get more into this specifically. Number two, offer some kind of freebie, something free that you know your ideal customer would love to have in an exchange. They just give you your e- their email address, right? Something free. Maybe it's, like, a wallpaper. Maybe it's a free, um, guide on, you know... Maybe you sell athletic wear, so you're like, "Here's my top five tips on getting fit for the summer." Something that's interesting to your specific customer, give away, offer a freebie, get them to your site. Another option, offer some store credit, right? You can offer your customer, "Hey, here's a store credit. If you go to the site, use the code," make up some kind of discount code that sounds store credit-y, like YWXF1C5, right? Get, you know, "Here's a store credit. We'll put it in your account. Here's the link." You know, whatever it is, offer them a store credit. Again, what this is doing- is you are soft selling them on something that is for them, a benefit for them and not for you. And this feels really, really good to customers, and they take a lot of action when doing this. This is how we get so many new visitors to our own sites, is because we are constantly offering, whether it's in our forward-facing marketing or running in, like, you know, the background, some kind- like, in our flows, some kind of monthly giveaway or a freebie or a store credit or a mystery credit or something going on that's for them. It feels like it's for them. It's not, "Here's my new arrival. Here's this new thing. Here's this. Buy from us, get a discount," right? Those are all very, very salesy. These are soft selling in ways that do not come across salesy. "Hey, comment to our giveaway to win our free X, Y, and Z," right? So what I teach my clients is I teach them how to run monthly giveaways, okay? And this is a giveaway that you set up once, and it becomes like a sales funnel that runs for you in the background on repeat. It becomes a machine, a traffic machine, that is always bringing in constant streams of new people, turning them into buyers, nurturing them on your list, okay? So it's like this three-part process. We bring in new people, we nurture the current people, and we get everybody to buy. It is super effective, and it can massively skyrocket your Shopify traffic and print you fricking money if you do it the right way. So if you guys are inside Trendsetter University, you know this is one of my favorite modules to talk about and to teach on because it's something that can be so highly converting for you. And it's so cool the way that it just retargets people over and over and it gets them excited about your business and your brand. And then again, we can sell to them on the back end after they make the decision because they're excited about winning something for themselves. The... It's their idea. This is the psychology of sales. They get really excited about being involved and invested in your business. And they're, it, it's a super fun way. Again, you can almost set it and forget it. So you get your giveaway set up, you get things in place. Um, again, this is not a giveaway where you're, like, collabing with other people on Instagram and you're, like, you know, doing one of those, like, "Hey, there's 10 companies together. If you like and share all our things..." Like, this is nothing to do with social media. This is a giveaway that happens on your website, and you're driving people to your website to enter the giveaway. And to enter the giveaway, they have to give their email address, okay? It's not like a random thing you do with people on social media. It's not like a comment to get entered, comment to win kind of thing, okay? This is a very specific way that we do this that has a very specific result in mind, which is getting more traffic and getting more sales, okay? Everything goes down on the website. Remember, people don't buy on social media. They buy on your website, so everything has to filter there. We really, really have to focus on that,
Send More Emails For Sales
okay? Now, the third thing I wanna talk about, which is something that I harp on all the time, but it's so important, is I want you to send more emails, okay? Send more emails. Right now, you feel like if you send more than one or two emails per week, you are bugging people, and you don't want, like, your list to get annoyed, and you don't want people to unsubscribe. You gotta get over all that stuff, okay? Old Navy has sent me seven emails in the past 24 hours at the time of this recording, and you are worried about sending more than one email per week when I literally just got seven from Old Navy? This attitude, you feeling like you're bugging people, is crushing your traffic and it's crushing your sales because email is the number one driver of traffic and sales in e-commerce, period. Okay? It's like 60 times more converting than social media would ever be. So by you feeling like you're gonna bug people, you are limiting the own success of your business, and I am not okay with that, and you should not be okay with that too. So you gotta get over that idea. And here's what I want you to remember too You're competing for attention out there, right? So most people are, are really busy, so it's not like they're staring at their email accounts all day, every day and, like, waiting for your emails. Like, "Oh my God, she emailed me again." No, most people have lives. They're busy. They may see the email and never open it, so you send it again. It's like, "Oh yeah, I remember. I wanted to go see that." Like, you have to get yourself in front of these people as much as you can in order for you to actually have a chance of getting the sale. Or at the very minimum, get in the fricking game. 'Cause when you have Old Navy sending seven emails and you're sending one, and they're sending seven in 24 hours and you're sending one in seven days, this is a big, huge problem, and it's a reason why so many stores have crappy traffic and crappy sales, 'cause you're not willing to do the work and send the emails. Or they'll say, "Oh, well, email doesn't work for me." Email works for everybody. Everybody, okay? If it's not working for you, there's strategy involved in here that you have to fix too. But what I recommend, so just to give you a little strategy, is I recommend, number one, my clients have very important flows in place, okay? Flows, automations that are happening behind the scenes without you having to go into your email service provider and create the email and send it, okay? Every e-commerce store must have certain flows that are turned on and working for them in the background, okay? Doing the heavy lifting. So you're not... Email marketing does not mean you are stuck at your computer all day crafting emails and creating Canva graphics and never getting anything else done. Most of the email marketing stuff you can do, you can do in literally, like, an hour for the month, okay? You're making way too much of this. You're complicating it way too much. It can be very, very simple. So number one, I recommend all my clients have flows in place. Number two, I also recommend a minimum of three emails per week now. Like, three would be the bare minimum, right? I usually say, like, Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays are great days to send out emails. And you can mess around with that. You can see what works for you and your customer base. But most people, Friday's payday. Obviously, you wanna hit 'em up when they have money in the bank, right? And Sunday, they still... It's like that, that kind of that leftover feeling of payday. They've, they're, it's fresh, and they also are not super busy usually. They're, like, hanging out at home, kinda, you know, resetting for the week. So Sundays are a really good time. And then I pick, like, a day during the week, so Tuesday, Wednesday, whatever feels good for you, okay? So that's what I recommend right now, is that you've got your flows running in place, and then also I recommend a minimum of three emails per week now. Again, don't forget, this is the big thing. You are competing for attention, so we have to get you focused on the type of attention you get and how you convert that attention to traffic and to sales. Right? And the coolest thing is when you actually focus on this, you take time to do this and you're like, "Yep, I'm gonna focus on my traffic, and I'm gonna do it in a way that feels good," like these three things I just told you, you are going to improve your traffic with real sustainable strategy I mean, sustainable strategy instead of just praying the algorithm is randomly gonna shoot you into a million people's feeds and you're gonna get a million views and it's gonna bless you and send all your content into viral land, right? Like, that is a very hard place to live, and it's exhausting. It's exhausting feeling like you're on the viral hamster wheel of death, and you're just chasing virality day and night. Instead, when you shift your focus on actionable, sustainable steps like I've described in here and like I talk about inside to you, you get real customers visiting your store and buying from you on repeat, and it feels way more simple. It's crazy. It also takes way less mental energy. Way less mental energy. Because getting on that viral, like, I wanna go viral rollercoaster, you guys know that is a rollercoaster that
Sustainable Traffic Mindset
is not fun to be on, and it e- it removes that emotional rollercoaster of vanity metrics, 'cause that's what so many people focus on on social media, and it's hard. It's a hard place to be. So instead, when you do some- when you create real traffic strategies like this, you actually feel confident, like you know what the frick you're doing, and you wake up every single day, you've got your effort focused on the right things. You know that you're doing things that are actually going to convert to traffic and sales, and that is such a better place to run a business from instead of just hoping and praying that something randomly is gonna happen to you one day. 'Cause let me tell you, this is not luck. This is skill, okay? And everything that I talk about here in the podcast is giving you skills to improve your business. More tools in the tool belt means more money in your pockets, right? So just to kind of go over again the three things really quickly for you. Make notes. Listen to this again if you want. Number one, your Instagram stories, right? Stop treating them like a diary. Start treating it like a shoppable catalog, okay? Number two, give people a reason to go to your website that is not about buying from you, but it's a reason that makes it feel like you're offering something for them, okay? The giveaway, the freebie, the store credit, all those kind of different creative things you can do, soft selling something to them. And then number three, send more emails, baby, right? Don't forget, you gotta give yourself a chance to get in the game. It is an attention game. And don't think people are, like, just obsessed with, like, you and your business. You're obsessed with it. They're out living their own lives. So they don't even notice if you've emailed them once, twice, three, five times, whatever. And remember, they've opted into your list, so they like you. They're excited to hear from you, and that's the attitude I want you to have every single time you send an email. Do not think you're bugging people, okay? Your products are cute and amazing, and they deserve to be seen by the right people, and the right people have already said they're interested in it. So now it's your job as the business owner to make sure they have a chance to see your stuff. Remember, six to seven times before someone buys from you, okay? 99% of people are not gonna buy from you, uh, when they first find you, and they're not gonna buy from you the second time they see you, or the third, or the fourth, or the fifth. But the sixth or seventh time, that's when they come around. Isn't that crazy? It's so crazy. Okay. So I hope you really, really learned some good actionable tips today in today's
