We often think of stress as a mental or emotional condition, but it doesn’t end there. Stress manifests physically, creating a ripple effect throughout our bodies. One key player in our body’s response to stress—and, importantly, our ability to heal—is the vagus nerve. This nerve plays a critical role in managing stress and I find there’s a connection between its innate purpose and the deep wisdom behind the system of Reiki.

Stress is more than just a state of mind. When stress triggers set in, physiological changes follow suit. The heart rate increases, muscles tense up, and the digestive system slows down. However, the body also has its own mitigation strategies to deal with stress, many of which involve the vagus nerve.

The vagus nerve is one of the 12 cranial nerves and serves as a complex network that links the brain to many vital organs. It plays an essential role in the autonomic nervous system, particularly in activating the “rest and digest” response. A well-toned vagus nerve can improve your ability to handle stress and regulate your emotions, a characteristic often measured by “vagal tone.”

The vagus nerve isn’t just a physical pathway; it’s a potent symbol of the body’s inherent ability to heal itself. When stress kicks in, your body initiates a cascade of hormone releases, including cortisol and adrenaline. These hormones prepare your body for ‘fight or flight,’ but they can also wreak havoc when their release becomes chronic. If we are always feeling stressed and asking for relief the body begins to crumble. Elevated cortisol levels can lead to digestive issues, insomnia, and even heart disease.

The vagus nerve attempts to work its magic by initiating the “rest and digest” response, where it neutralizes the overwhelming surge of stress hormones. This is not merely a passive act but a proactive initiation of self-healing processes. The vagus nerve actively reduces inflammation by releasing neurotransmitters that lower the production of cytokines. It also improves gut health by promoting digestive enzyme release, further demonstrating that your body is wired to restore itself to equilibrium.

Our bodies know exactly what we need to heal ourselves. The processes are there ready to work for us. And yet, sometimes, when that stress IS chronic and we find it difficult to keep up, we need to reach out and ask for help.

That help does not have to be interventionist. It might simply be a booster.

The system of Reiki is a blessed booster and self-healing also lies at its foundation. The experience of Reiki meditations and techniques, reiju, hands-on healing, chanting and a deep immersion in the Reiki Precepts is non-intrusive and serves as a catalyst for the body’s innate healing mechanisms. When a Reiki practitioner practices, they are not intervening, but asking the complete self to let go and find its wholeness, its balance, and to remember the wonder of innate healing. This is a boost for any of the body’s natural self-healing processes.

The vagus nerve and the Reiki system both operate on a foundational belief in the body’s inherent wisdom and capability for self-healing. Stress, although initiated in the mind, finds its playground in the physical realm, but it also meets its match there, if we allow it.
