We are, essentially, a collection of stories—tales we’ve been told, tales we tell ourselves, and tales we share with the world. But not all stories serve us well. Some are unhelpful narratives that we’ve unknowingly allowed to embed themselves deep within us, influencing our thoughts, behaviors, and even our destinities. These narratives might stem from childhood, societal expectations, or past experiences, and they often manifest as limiting beliefs or self-doubts.

The process of embedding these stories is often unconscious, but incredibly potent. We think them, write them down in the diaries of our minds, and voice them in our conversations. Before we know it, these stories aren’t just something we believe; they are an integral part of who we are. They dictate how we interact with the world, how we treat ourselves, and what we think is possible for our lives.

So, how do we detach ourselves from these limiting narratives? The antidote lies in the same steps that led us to internalize them in the first place: Think it, write it, say it.

Think It

Begin by identifying the unhelpful stories you’ve subscribed to. Do some deep introspection to pinpoint where these narratives originated. Understanding the source can make it easier to separate yourself from them.

Write It

Writing offers a form of detachment. When you put these narratives down on paper, you’re taking them out of your internal ecosystem and giving yourself the chance to scrutinize them more objectively. Writing can be a form of release, and it can also serve as a constant reminder of what you’re trying to let go of.

Say It

The final step is to verbalize this new, healthier narrative. Speak it into existence. Share it with someone you trust or say it to yourself in the mirror. Words have immense power, and speaking them aloud can solidify your commitment to change.

By consciously engaging in this process of think it, write it, say it, you’re not just rewriting your story; you’re reclaiming your life. It’s never too late to change the narrative. So, what story will you choose to tell yourself today?

I have a Pre-Recorded web class on just this subject where I take you through a process of finding and naming and RE-NAMING your stories :-). Find it here.
