Welcome back to the Short Sleeve Travel Podcast. I'm your host, Kat Short Sleeve. I have worked in wealth management for five years, I got my MBA at Columbia Business School, and all at the same time I've been to over 40 countries, almost 50 at this point. I have an obsession with personal finance and travel and money, because I realized if you can manage your money, that's providing you personal freedom and power. I have a travel company called Short Sleeve Travel, and I'm always on the go. I just got back from Paris and Copenhagen a few days ago, and actually tomorrow morning I'm headed off to Brazil for about 9 days, and then on to Peru for another 8 days. I always bring you along for the adventure. There's a lot going on. So buckle up, let's get started. This episode is really quite special because I'm telling a story about a trip that I just went on last week where I surprised my mom and I took her to Copenhagen and to Paris. I've never surprised anyone with even just a little getaway weekend trip. And for this to be my first surprise bringing someone overseas, it was such a treat for me, but logistics were a lot as well. So I will get into all of the details, how I surprised her. What we did during our time on the trip. And just tell the story a little bit more because there's been a lot of people who are extremely interested in how we pulled it off. This trip actually came together extremely last minute. So nothing was planned for this trip at all. Just two and a half weeks before we took off. What happened was my mom took off a week and I knew that she had done this to be able to go out to Breckenridge. My parents have a little condo out there and they were going to go out for the week and enjoy skiing, but then it came down to it and they hadn't booked their flights and then two and a half weeks before they're supposed to take off and go, I heard that they ended up cancelling the trip and My parents always want to travel. They always want to go places. I'm constantly traveling and whenever I come back home from a trip, they always say, Oh my goodness, we really want to go there. And they mean it. They want to go to all these places. They have so many things that they like to do, but they have a hard time. Actually booking it, pulling the trigger, and getting it done. My dad really doesn't like to travel. He finds it much too difficult with work and logistics are a nightmare to him, but my mom, she really is itching to travel and go and I was so disappointed for her that she wasn't able to get the logistics together for this Breckenridge trip. And so I knew that she had this time off from work. So that was key number one. And then she was talking about potentially going to Amsterdam. She's always wanted to see the tulips in Amsterdam. And I heard that instead of going to Breckenridge, they were going to go to Amsterdam. And then that was called off. And so I texted her, and let me just pull up the text and I'll read it directly to you. I said, hey, I have a paid work trip to D. C., can you come with me? You'll have to miss work on Thursday, March 14th, and Friday, March 15th, as well as Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. March 18th, and we'll be back on Tuesday the 19th in the afternoon I told her flights and fancy hotel will be paid for by my company and I just have a conference for a few hours on Friday and on Tuesday Your flight would be paid for to could you please come pretty please and she responded instantly within a minute and she said yes I'm in and I said, are you sure I'll send them your info to book the flights Tricking her, of course. And she says, you know, I have a Zoom call with my boss at 2 p. m. Let me just make sure I can get some coverage for Monday and Tuesday. I'm pretty sure it will be fine. And then she needed to make sure that someone was around to kind of take care of my dad for the entire week because she was going to be gone. So she called my brother and made sure that he was available to be able to kind of babysit my dad. And we were good to go. So. As soon as I got the text back from her, I booked our flights round trip through Paris and I didn't know what the plan was going to be. I just knew I was getting her to Paris. I was getting her to Europe, getting her outside of the country. Now my brother then went to Paris the next week and didn't have a great time. He was a little bit down about it and didn't have rave reviews. And so after him coming off of that trip from Paris, I thought, okay, this isn't going to work. I need to do something in addition to Paris with my mom because he didn't love it. And now we need to kind of add on something else. And I knew for a while that she'd been wanting to go to Copenhagen. She's Danish. Her dad went to Copenhagen. So my grandfather When he was working multiple times and he just absolutely loved it. So my mom has some jewelry that he brought back from Copenhagen and it's just really been on her bucket list. But Copenhagen seems like a place that's really difficult to travel to and get to. So she never made it a priority to actually get there and do it. So I thought, this is amazing. Let me see if I can get some flights. So. I look up flights from Paris to Copenhagen and I thought it'll be much easier to arrive in Paris and then just immediately transfer to Copenhagen and then come back to Paris, spend a few days before we head out. So that's exactly what we did. I booked all of our flights and then I was able to spend the next two weeks putting together our hotels, our itineraries in each places. I booked a lot of Airbnb experiences, did a ton of research so that we had an itinerary of what we'd like to do each day and major things that we didn't want to miss, but keeping it very relaxed at the same time. so grateful for this because it was really hard for me to keep this secret even though it was only two weeks that I had to keep the secret. But I was traveling the entire time during the two weeks. I had to go out to California. I was in DC. It was all over the place. So it made it pretty easy. I went to the Cape, Cape Cod. So it made it really easy to keep the secret. Now comes to departure day. We departed on Wednesday. I woke up this morning and I just felt sick to my stomach. I was so nervous the entire day because I I needed to make sure that she packed the right things and I needed to make sure that She was wearing a really comfortable outfit. So she'd be flying overnight a really long flight and be comfortable And most of all I needed to make sure that I was able to get her passport She of course thought we were going to dc and didn't need to bring her passport and I needed to make sure I Bought her passport Number one, located her passport. Number two, was able to secure it without her noticing and three, get the airport without losing it along the way. So I wake up on departure day, Wednesday morning, and I go straight to their house. I worked there from, for the rest of the day and I went into her closet. I was able to dig up her passport and I put it, and I actually just left it there in her closet. The entire reason why I told my mom that we were going to Washington D. C. rather than telling her we were going somewhere else was because the weather was supposed to be the same in D. C. as it was in Paris and Copenhagen. So it's supposed to be pretty chilly. You need a pretty big jacket. But then there was this warm front that was going through D. C. opening up all the cherry blossoms down there. And The temperatures just started to skyrocket. So the temperatures were in the sixties and seventies and the departure day for us, it was 75 in DC. Meanwhile, it's freezing in Copenhagen and I'm trying to get my mom to pack a winter hat, gloves, winter coat. And luckily she listened to me and I was saying, you know, it's really windy. I know it's saying it's 75 degrees, but it's really windy actually. And you should bring these things and it's going to be pretty cold. She luckily listened, despite the fact that the. The weather forecast was showing about 75 degrees. So anyways, we get in the car, we're headed off to the airport. I grabbed her passport right as we were headed out the door. I ran upstairs. Oh, I have to grab something. Grabbed her passport, put it in my bag. I can't tell you the number of times I checked to see and make sure that her passport and my passport were both in my backpack on our way to the airport. I must have checked about 10 times. Okay, and now we're arriving at the airport, and of course, when you're in Boston, you fly out of Terminal E, which is the international terminal, and we're driving with my dad, and I wanted to keep the surprise for my mom, it was kind of our trip, it was something that we were doing together, and I wanted to keep it special and keep it a surprise as long as possible, and keep it for just us, and we're arriving at Terminal E, which is only international flights fly out of there. And I'm coming up with all these reasons. Oh, maybe the commuter flights from Boston to D. C. I heard that they had to move it to Terminal E because there's too much demand for those commuter flights now. So it's not just international. Luckily, my parents are buying it, so. Anyways, we go through. We're in the international terminal. My mom's like, are we really, are you sure we're supposed to be here? I'm like, yep, yep, right this way. Okay, minor pause, I'm checking in for my flight to Brazil tomorrow because I'm flying with someone and we want to be able to sit next to each other but of course didn't book our flights together so I have to fill this out really quickly. One moment please. Luckily I have my passport number memorized. Oh, goodness. Apparently there's an e visa required for Brazil. Oh, gosh. It can take two weeks for the e visas to process. Great. That's early tomorrow morning. Great. Anyways moving on so I go with my mom and we go through the line. We have TSA pre check. We're going through the line. We get up to the agent and of course I have her boarding pass. She hasn't asked for it luckily because of course it says we're headed to Paris and the TSA agent asks for our passports and my mom makes a funny face and she just goes to grab for her license. So she's opening up her wallet, looking for her license. Pulls it out. And I say at that point, I actually think you're going to need your passport. And she says, I don't have my passport. And I said, I have it. It's right here. And she says, why we're going to DC. I don't need my passport. And I said, I don't know, new regulations. I guess we need it to go to DC. So at this point, she realizes that we aren't going to DC, of course, but she doesn't know where we're going. And so she doesn't want me to tell her either. She says, don't tell me, don't tell me. I don't know why I probably would want to know right away, but she says, don't tell me, don't tell me. I don't want to know yet. And I say, okay, okay. So we go through and I'm the only one who's looked at our boarding passes and I say, okay, let's go to the lounge. We have some time to kill. We can go to the lounge. And I thought I'll tell her in the lounge. So we check into the Air France lounge. Okay. She's not suspecting anything. And in the lounge, we have some dinner, we work a little bit, and then I just can't contain it anymore. I'm still like sick to my stomach, basically from keeping the secret. I found it really difficult to keep the secret and I can't imagine trying to keep the secret from a partner or someone you're in a relationship with because. Then you're with them every day. Luckily I didn't have to see my mom for the two weeks, so it made it a lot easier to lie to her I found. But if I was with her day in and day out, I mean, it's just exhausting. Even before the trip, my brother called me up and said, Hey, like blah, blah, blah. When you're headed to DC this weekend. And I was like oh, oh yeah. Yeah. DC. Yes. Right. Had to do DC this weekend. Yeah. No plans or I made up something. But the lies just build on top of each other. It becomes too much. But anyways, we're in the lounge, we have dinner, and then I say to her, Okay, I need to tell you where we're going. And I think she wanted me to continue to wait. She was too nervous to find out. And I said, We are going to two countries. We are first going to Copenhagen, Denmark, and then we're going to Paris, France, and she could not believe it. She was so excited beside herself. She's always wanted to go to Copenhagen, she's telling me, which of course I knew, and She just couldn't believe. So we're flying overnight tonight. I said, yes, we land in Paris. We have a quick layover and then we're onto Copenhagen. We'll fly tonight. Instead of the one hour flight to DC, it'll be more like a seven hour flight to Paris, and then we'll have breakfast there tomorrow morning together. We can go to another lounge and then we'll be onto Copenhagen where we land at 2 PM tomorrow and check into our hotel. This was pretty mind blowing for her. Couldn't believe it. I pulled out the itinerary that I had put together with her. All the activities we had booked, which I'll get into. And I showed her the hotels that we'd be staying at. They were all like very sauna wellness hotel focused. And she just was beside herself. She was so, so excited. It was really quite sweet. And I pulled out the converter for her and then so that she could be using that while we're in Europe. And she said, Oh, that's why you told me not to bring this. That's why you told me to bring that things weren't making sense. I, but she never had put it together. What a mess right now. I'm trying to check in for this flight to Brazil and trying to record this at the same time, and the Brazil flight is having all these issues. Oh, goodness. The joy of traveling. Okay, next up we're going to get into the actual itinerary for this trip. What happened, I'm going to walk you through it. It was one of the most exciting and most fun weeks. I didn't know a lot of what to expect, and of course, neither did my mom. But let's get into it. So we didn't have much time at all in the lounge after I told her and after she called my brother and called my dad. So we had to make our way over to board the flight and we got over there and she couldn't believe when we got to the gate. I showed her our boarding passes saying that we're going to Paris and She looked up and saw the screen and it said, you know, headed to Paris, Charles de Gaulle, and she was just so, so excited, couldn't believe it, and she had a lot of work to do, actually, that she was anticipating doing when we were in D. C., and so she was kind of working away at the gate and then on the flight she ended up working quite a bit as well. But we got on the flight. We both had rose to ourselves, which was lovely for this red eye. And we flew about seven hours overnight to Paris. She worked for quite a lot of it and I do what I do best. And I laid out on the seats, had the eye mask and the ear plugs and took a long nap. We arrived in Paris, got off the plane. It was all very easy. We went through customs, had a quick layover, had some breakfast, just some green juices and some croissants. And then we took the next flight, which was. About an hour and a half onto Copenhagen. When we arrived in Copenhagen, I knew that there wasn't going to be any Uber, despite the fact that last time when I was in Copenhagen, Uber did exist, but they have pushed Uber out. So it is no longer in Copenhagen actually. Instead, they use an app called Vigo and it's all electric cars. So we downloaded that app or I had downloaded ready to go. And we went off to our hotel. You can also just grab a taxi from the airport, but it's a lot less expensive and nice to use Vigo. So then we arrived at the hotel, checked in. I had some work calls I had to get through. And then my mom took a quick nap while I was on those. She was very exhausted from not having slept on the earlier flight. And then after that, we ventured out into Copenhagen. So we went and found some bikes, which is our favorite thing to do in any city that we're in. We grabbed some electric bikes and we biked all around as the sun was going down, which was such a sweet little start to the trip, actually. We were both pretty hungry at that point, so we found this incredible little restaurant called Mangia. It's just a little bit outside of the city centre, and we had biked all the way over there. It just looked so good, and it was one of my favourite restaurants of the entire trip. So it's an Italian restaurant, they make everything from scratch right there, in the back of the kitchen, and you can watch them. We had this really good, it sounds quite funny, but we had this really great vegetable plate to begin with. Which I think after you're just jet lagged and pretty exhausted, having something fresh and delicious like that was such a nice treat. And then we had a bunch of different pastas. And on this trip, for the most part, we really weren't drinking because it's hard to deal with jet lag and work and be exploring a new city when you are drinking. So that was pretty inexpensive, not having any drinks. And then after that, we had, like I said, we had biked so far to get over there, but. We weren't tired, of course, of course, because of the jet lag. And so we decided to walk all the way back home. And we saw so much of the city this way. My mom was really struck by the number of bikes all throughout the city. There are just sea, seas of bikes and everyone gets around on bike it seems. We got back to the hotel and we went to the spa. We went up into the sauna, the steam showers. We did some facials like clay mask type things. There's a little cold plunge and then we went right to sleep. The next morning we went to one of the best bakeries that I know about in all of Copenhagen. It is super, super famous. It's called Atelier September. While there might be a long wait it'll look like when you're outside, the line goes very quickly because they turn over people pretty fast. But when we were waiting in the line we thought it would take quite a while. So I went right down the street to another bakery called Felix and I picked up a bunch of croissants, pastries for us to try, and some coffees. And we luckily zipped right through the line at Atelier September. So we were able to sit there, have some coffee, we had our pastries. They have this iconic Danish breakfast, which is a really nice thick cheese with hard boiled eggs, sourdough, some homemade jam and salt. I mean, this is all over TikTok, all over social media. So you might've already seen it. But it's really, really nice. And then in addition to that, we got some grapefruit, like I said, avocado toast. And then we sat there for quite a while, just chatting with the people next to us. This girl next to us, who we met, she's from Tokyo, but she has a jewelry brand. And she just got, she just came into Copenhagen from Paris because Paris Fashion Week was a week prior. And so now she's taking some time off to relax and go through Copenhagen and come up with some new jewelry ideas. Because the design, of course, in Copenhagen is pretty spectacular. So, Breakfast There is a major hit. Absolutely loved that and then so I don't have to go through all of the little minutiae details of what we did I think i'll just give you my top five favorites in copenhagen and my top five favorites in paris And then in another episode i'll do a full breakdown of my favorite things to do like how to do plan an itinerary That's very full if you're going to copenhagen for a long weekend or going to paris for a long weekend so That will be a separate episode, but right now I'll just give you my top fives. And for Copenhagen, my number one actually would be the Atelier September Bakery. The food is just very authentically Danish. It has a great feel. You could stay there for quite a while. I would go there day after day, even if I were to only be in Copenhagen for maybe a long weekend. And I'm going back to Copenhagen this summer, which I'm so looking forward to. I'm going with some friends, and so I will definitely be going to the Atelier September Bakery once or twice. And by once or twice, I mean probably every day. My second favorite in Copenhagen, this might sound odd, but you might know of the designer called Ghani. Well Ghani, I really like some of the things that they make and in Copenhagen They have three different Ghani stores in addition to a post modern Ghani, which is actually like a sale rack version of Ghani So things at that post modern Ghani are just on sale some cooler different styles that i've never seen before and You Of course, because it's more affordable, but still really high end, it's quite fun to go there. So I picked up a whole bunch of pieces from that Ghani as well as just the typical Ghani in Copenhagen because they have some pieces there that you won't find at any other Ghani, which is kind of cool. The postmodern Ghani is right outside of Christiania, if you know where that is. Christiania is the, is the area in Copenhagen where essentially there aren't any laws. I don't know if that's the best way to describe it. I'll get into Christiania and what that all means in the next episode when I talk all about Copenhagen. But that's where you can find the Ghani. Okay, coming in at number three, there are a bunch of really neat Copenhagen particular stores where they sell kind of boutique clothes for Swedish girl style. And the two of these stores that were my favorite, the number one is called Norr, N O R R, and the second one is called Boi, B O I I. Now, The things that they sell are not expensive And they have such unique styles especially when it comes to pants and jewelry So they have some really nice fabrics Great styles great cuts really well done Not too expensive whatsoever and great kind of trendy jewelry. I don't know if the jewelry would last forever I actually didn't end up picking any up and I regret that but i'll go back and get some this summer They have great linens and just kind of classic cuts and classic styles. Coming in at number four, I would have to say you need to go to a Danish pastry class where you learn how to make these different types of authentic Danish pastries as well as You learn the history of the Danish pastry, and that's really special to do. So go there, and if you don't have the time, I would go to Bukka Bukka. It's a great Danish bakery, and they have all the different types of pastries. You should pick up a couple just to try them, even if you can't finish all of them. And not too expensive there either. Coming in at number five, my fifth favorite thing to do in Copenhagen, and maybe my mom's first favorite, is going to take a biking tour. So renting a bike and going along with a group where you learn about the history, you learn the architecture, and the best part about doing a biking tour in Copenhagen is you go all through the gorgeous gardens out by the Little Mermaid. We did a 3 hour biking tour. We learned a ton. It's a great way to kind of be introduced to a city. And if you're going to do a biking tour, I'd recommend doing it at the beginning of your trip in whatever city you're in. Or if you're doing a free walking tour, do it at the beginning because you'll be able to notice some of the things and just be more enriched during the time when you're in that country once you have that tour. We really hit the ground running when we arrived in Copenhagen and we spent three days there, which was lovely. And then Saturday night, after a full day in Copenhagen, we flew on to Paris. This was perfect timing because we were able to have some wine in the lounge Saturday night, take the flight, which was nice and easy, just an hour and a half to Paris, had a taxi there ready and organized to pick us up and bring us right to the hotel. We got in, we showered, got ready for dinner, and went out and had a lovely Mediterranean dinner. Came back to the hotel, again we went to the sauna, relaxed in the spa, and then we went to bed. It was so nice to then wake up Sunday morning in Paris. And we had all day Sunday, all day Monday, and half of Tuesday to explore Paris before flying back home. I have been to Paris a handful of times. I absolutely adore the city I'd love to get into an itinerary of what to do each day if you have five or six days there as well as Kind of the major highlights of what I like to see If I'm just there for a weekend, but in this episode again, I will just give you my top five So my top five must do things even if I'm in Paris for only 24 hours, I would try to do these things Number one, I love to get a macaroon, or as other people say, macaroon, at Pierre Hermé. Now this is not La Dorée, it's Pierre Hermé, and that's where more of the locals will go to get their macaroons. So I like to go there and just feel like I'm actually in Paris. It's so funny, oftentimes because of the jet lag, I'll pick up a macaroon and a double espresso to have breakfast when I'm in Paris. Number two, I don't like to go to Paris without visiting at least one exhibit in one art gallery. This trip I was most excited to see the water lilies. And so I went and did that, but then the other exhibit we did this time was the Van Gogh exhibit in Orsay. Which was lovely, and I had never done that exhibit before. So picking one, focusing on one, spending two hours at that one exhibit, you can get a little bit more out of it than running all over to a bunch of museums and to a bunch of different exhibits. Number three, the vintage shops in the Marais, which is the third district. Oh my goodness, they're to die for. I didn't know about the Marais the first time I visited Paris and it's now my favorite place. It's where I like to stay. It's just awesome. A little bit more homey, a little smaller feeling. When I compare it to New York, it feels a little bit more like the West Village of New York. And I don't actually like to leave the Third and the Marais if I don't have to. Of course, you go outside of it to do a couple things, but there are so many great shops in the Marais. There are so many little wine bars and cafes. Little art galleries. It's such a perfect neighborhood. And Paris is huge, so if you don't have a great plan, you'll get caught up just running all over the city. Which is why I like to just hang out and kind of stroll around the Marais. Coming in at number four, I think this is quite fun because you can feel a little bit fancy, but not have to stay at this hotel, which would break the bank, but going and having high tea in Paris at the Ritz is an experience. It is super fun. I, of course, don't do this every time when I'm in Paris, but doing it here and there and having some champagne in the afternoon, 3 p. m. high tea, getting all dressed up, it's, it's quite the vibe. So that's enjoyable. And if it's your first time visiting Paris, that's a way to make it pretty special. I'm all about like staying at the cheaper accommodation, stay at the hostel, go have the experience. And I do think that having high tea at the Ritz once is quite an experience and extremely filling. I thought that it would just be, you know, a couple of little things and not much food, but it's quite filling. So go hungry for sure. Number five. I think this is just lovely and a very special thing about Paris. Going to a wine bar, going to a cafe, you sit on the corner for hours, just chatting and staying forever, maybe over a bottle of champagne or over some cappuccinos. And you just sit and people watch and let the day carry on. Let the sun go down, it's lovely. It's, it's the best way to spend an afternoon in Paris and just relax and enjoy and be very present. So if I had to recommend to you, A place to do this. Flores Café Flores is probably the most famous café, and I actually think it is worth the hype. Make sure that you wait for a table outside. They turn over very quickly. Be cautious of the cigarette smoke, because a lot of people do sit outside to smoke, but if you can just turn your head and not mind it too much. Café Flores is really, really nice and quite special. The other two would be Giraffe, that's a much more fancy experience, but from there you can see the Eiffel Tower, which is pretty special. And then the third would be a place called Carette, and they have some iconic hot chocolate with this extremely thick homemade whipped cream that they put on top of it. Very fun to have that. Great people watching. You kind of have a sea of outdoor tables, which is fun to be a part of, fun to be in the mix. Especially if you're solo traveling, that's a great place to go because the tables are all kind of cramped and up next to each other. And so you're bound to kind of begin chatting with the person next to you. And now if for some reason it's raining the entire time you're in Paris, but you still want a great place to go sit like this, a wine bar or cafe, I recommend Sevenly Heart. This is in the Marais. They have a wine bar and it's so cozy and another great place to kind of wait out a rain shower because it's been raining a ton in Paris recently. Overall, this was such a gift of a week to be able to do this with my mom and treat her to this experience. She was over the moon, excited about it. And while it was of course an investment for me, it was the best gift I could have possibly given. It was such a nice time to just spend days on end with her shopping and exploring and doing things that she loves. And she just loves to spend time with her kids and so she's really easy and go with the flow. It was such a nice experience and I'm so grateful and very blessed to have been able to give this gift to her. If you are considering planning a trip like this or doing something as a surprise for someone in your life, I highly recommend doing it. This was on my bucket list of something I knew I wanted to do and once I saw the opportunity open up here, with her schedule being available, and and me having the time as well, I knew I needed to grab hold of this opportunity and I'm so grateful that I did. I would love to take her on another trip again and maybe I can give her a little bit more lead time, but it was such a cool experience, so I'm really, really grateful for that. If you want to plan a surprise or you're thinking of doing this for someone, I would love to help. I love planning itineraries and helping people figure out their travels. I've been doing a ton of that recently. So if you have any questions, please reach out. You can always find me on any social media as always at Kat, short sleeve K A T. And I'll see you next time. You can always email me gmail. com. Let me know what you thought of the episode. If you could like this, if you could rate it, if you could share it, I would absolutely love that. But thank you so much for following along and next episode we'll do a deeper dive into Paris as well as into Copenhagen. Might have to split up the episodes, we'll see how long they get, but would love to give you my favorites because at this point I know the cities pretty well. Thank you all so much for listening. Thanks for tuning in and I will see you next time. Cheers.
