Chileya: Unleashing Creativity - discovering passions within theatre and film.
Welcome to another episode of the Soulcial Club podcast. Today, we're thrilled to introduce our first Soulcialite Chileya, a true powerhouse in the creative realm, someone whose journey from actress to writer, producer, director, and filmmaker is nothing short of inspiring. Join us as we explore the accomplishments of Chileya, and the journey of self discovery of her Zambian roots and within her different passions in the theatre and film scene.
Chileya's journey began at the University of East London, where her passion for the arts ignited. Through encounters with seasoned practitioners, she delved into various art forms of expressionism. It was during this time that Chileya's heart found resonance in physical theatre and contemporary writing. The university not only honed her artistic skills but also played a pivotal role in helping her connect with her roots and embrace her true self.
After her university experience, Chileya's love for acting led her to the Fourth Monkey Drama School. This marked a period of profound self-discovery as she explored diverse theatre genres and themes. Her very first play, "The Blind Truth," graced the stage at the Lyric in Hammersmith. This powerful play was a precursor to the remarkable trajectory that Chileya's career would take.
When the world faced the challenges of lockdown, Chileya's resilience shone brightly. Inviting a producer to experience "The Blind Truth" led to an exciting opportunity to create work at the Mercury in Colchester, where Chileya became an associate artist. Her dedication was further evident through her research and development of the script "Boundless," showcasing her unyielding commitment to her craft even in uncertain times.
Amidst the turmoil of the pandemic, Chileya's creative spirit persevered. She penned her directorial debut, "A Love Letter to You” a film that captures unique black voices and perspectives. As this film ventures into the festival circuit, it stands as a testament to her journey and determination, proving that creativity knows no bounds.
In the final segment of our podcast, we touch on crucial topics with Chileya. She shares her thoughts on navigating the challenges of the theatre and film industries, the importance of rest and mental health, and how to infuse joy into the creative process. Her journey is not only a tale of artistic growth but also an inspiring narrative of embracing one's passions with unbridled enthusiasm.
