About the Co-hosts:
Will & Max are long-lost college friends who met at the University of Virginia where they co-chaired Crosswinds, the college DJ-ing club. The two have taken divergent paths over the years with Will remaining on the East Coast and leading a charmed life as a bachelor, and Max living overseas for more than a decade and now spending way too much time arranging carpools for her kids and researching meal kit plans.
They started the Midlife Marauders podcast as a way to catch up with one another as well as to engage with, motivate and entertain their peers. The podcast title is a nod to A Tribe Called Quest’s 1993 album, “Midnight Marauders.”
Beats/theme music: Moyne Music

Are you too old to wear Vans, Jordans or bobby socks?
Will & Max discuss the ample representation of midlifers during Usher's Super Bowl halftime show, including Jermaine Dupri in his designer toddler socks (plus midlifers in the Dunkin' Donuts commercial), which led to a discussion of what shoes and clothes are age-appropriate and whether either of us could pull off wearing an Apple Vision Pro around town.

Thanks for listening--keep on marauding!
Hey, Will, hey, how are you? I'm good. How are you? I'm great. I'm great. Another blessed day on Earth. Happy to be here. Happy to be on the podcast. I feel like we should welcome first time, listeners, subscribers, whatever you call it. I don't, I don't think we shout them out enough. And also we should give a big thank you for all those people that have been listening to us and subscribing. Keep that going. Keep that energy that way going. We listened to all your responses and everything. And we just try to make this a better podcast each and every time. So I just want to say thank you to the first time people and our longtime listeners So how was the Super Bowl party that you went to? Oh, super party. It was good. It was it was good. It was like I said it was it was a it was a joy. You know, there was lots of good food. There were a lot of good drinks. It's also a place where everybody every male, I think, Thanks, Sarah, football wizard, football Insider. So you know, we're we're breaking down like what the teams are doing wrong, why are they not running enough? Why are they not passing enough? That sort of thing. And that's kind of fun, though. With the males is kind of like, you want to keep up and you want to kind of like match your, your football IQ with them. So it's kind of you know, it's a anytime where males watch. If they're interested in football, I've definitely met some guys who don't give a shit about football. But like, who are you rooting for? I didn't move any teams. I had no no rooting interest in anybody, which I think is one of the great ways of watching a football game because you just want a good game. You don't care who wins. And I placed a couple of bets. I had a kind of went back and forth. My initial feeling was that Kansas City was going to win because I think the stars were aligned for that. You know, that whole the whole numerology about 13? I don't know if you saw that. Okay, but wait, what was my initial thoughts? Like, who was saying it? And how it all had to do with Taylor Swift? I don't remember all that die entail, but it was like, well, she had to fly from Tokyo to get there. And how many hours is that? Take? 13? Yeah, it was a bunch of like, yeah, yeah. And there were a bunch of 13 references. But so I don't know if that fit into my thoughts. I can see what's going on when I just think when I look at a football game in that sense, particularly so we'll always go with the best who I think is the best quarterback. Okay, smart. Yeah, yeah. So experience for sure. Right? Definitely for sure. Then toward the game. I started thinking, well, San Fran does have the better team all the way around. Right. So I kind of I kind of, I guess, uh, toward the end of the, toward the beginning of the game, I was thinking San Francisco is going to win. So it was a jersey betting your friend. Oh, I bet. I bet a lot. And when I got there. Some people saw that I was betting online. So they wanted to jump in on that. And you know, they gave me some money to make bets for them. And that sort of thing went a lot. But we all lost. So we all lost. But yeah, it was it was fun. It was good time. It was also the host of the party. His mother was celebrating her seven, seven years. Wow. That's nice. So it was a combo Superbowl party. So she was their birthday party. She was like multi generation. Well, yes. Any kids? No kids, no kids. What about you was at a party with two other families. And the kids were all downstairs so kind of separated out. They didn't really watch the game. They were just playing video games. And then we watched the adults watched upstairs and it was great. Because I actually wasn't like a big group either. And so we could kind of watch the game and focus on the game and have a little bit the chit chat. And they have a ton of food. Like they went out and bought all this stuff from Costco for a barbecue, you know, because we were rooting for Kansas City. So we did this whole barbecue theme. Yeah. Tell me your thoughts on the halftime show. It was it was midlife heavy. Are you a fan? I'm a I'm a fan. I'm not a super fan, but I enjoy and appreciate his work. I noticed I don't know if you noticed ushers mic wasn't that great at the beginning? Did you? Yeah, I didn't know what was going on. I also thought like, a lot of you know, he played a lot of slow songs at the beginning. Right, right, right. Right. I don't remember exactly what the first song was. But we kind of took like, informal bets on like, what was going to be the first song? I think the consensus was? Yeah. Oh, really? They would say he would save it till the end. Save it to the end. I forget what I picked up. Maybe I'll remember it shortly. But it was cool. Yeah, yeah. Um, what? I love the roller skating. go roller skating was the best part for me. I know that. Alicia Keys. She started off with a really horrible note. I don't know if he knows. Yeah. Yeah. She's the one she didn't she didn't hit her. Yeah, she Yeah. But I mean, she's always so great. So yeah, I mean, and you know, I'm sure she was playing the piano where she can do very well. Just that one note or two at the beginning was like that it sounds so good. But no, the costume changes the roller skating, which I thought was cool. And he's in good shape. Age 45. Looking good. Yeah. You know, it's funny, because I actually saw some flack about his shape. Really, on social media. Yeah. What? They said he didn't have the abs that he used. Oh my gosh. Like 45 years old. And I would kill for whatever shape he's in right now. I know. I think it would put most a lot of people younger than him to shame. Go back and look at that. For sure. And then I also saw I didn't really notice maybe you noticed that he was perspiring quite a bit. Yeah. Well, it's natural, right? Yeah. I mean, he's a 45 year old man. Singing and doing all those dances and skating. But don't you think that's also because maybe the cameras are better these days? Lights are hot. Yeah, everything. Everything's hot. So I thought it was I thought it was awesome shout again. I wish his mic was a little bit better. The Alicia Keys thing I don't really care about did you like having like The Little John in there and I liked a little John and then ludicrous from the Illuminati was in there. Also, will I am was uh, oh, yeah, I don't I don't know what they were the other black eyed peas were, but I definitely recognized. Well, I am and yeah, I thought it was I thought it was a good show. So what was your reaction? So I actually didn't know who Jermaine Dupri Well, you didn't know. JD Yeah, so I looked him up. Right. But I actually didn't. Look, I thought the outfit was like a little bit odd. I didn't really think about it, but then reading up on it later, but what was your reaction or people at the party? I didn't. I guess I was with people. Like you who didn't really recognize who that was. I mean, it was really quick, right? It was quick. And like it took me about 30 seconds to process who that was. And I was like, oh, that's JD is Jermaine Dupri. And by the time I process who it was, he was gone and I didn't really have a chance to really break down his fit. So then when I saw it in pictures and videos later, I was like, Oh my gosh, what is my midlife man? Doing? So many comments online. So I saw a lot about his socks. Yeah, because I guess there and then he posted that there Louis Batanes $500 socks or something. So then everybody was ripping on him. Like, it doesn't matter if they're designer socks. You look like a child. Yeah, you he looked like a fat middle age toddler on that stage with with children's socks. His shoes and socks like what Jamie Foxx wore in Django when he had that blue suit with the ruffles and I don't know if you remember that. But I thought it was appalling. I thought it was atrocious. I think that that set mid life. Well, I just wonder who who styled him. You know what I mean? A lot of people say him look like lollipop kids. From the lollipop. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Whoever is does this should should be on LinkedIn right now looking for another job. Because that's just terrible. And if he Well, he should get most of the blame because he has to approve that. Oh, I don't know what he was thinking. I really don't. I really don't Jermaine Dupri is, is I wouldn't say an idol. But I love and respect Jermaine Dupri all he's done for the music industry and the people that he's put on, do so many songs. carries. Mariah Carey, he was with Jenna. He was with Janet Jackson at one point they were together. Right? The brat? I mean that whole soso deaf family, you know, he is Atlanta, music. You know, when I think of Atlanta music, he was one of the guys that paved the way paved the way for that. But, you know, midlife we gotta do better. We got to do better. Just because we can't we have the ability to wear and afford to wear things. Sometimes we just, we just shouldn't. Right. And I think the sad thing is like, if even though he's got this great body of work, people are gonna remember him for those socks. It's gonna take a while. Yeah, he can't. It's hard to live that down. Like, I think he even comedies like, Oh, I got all these number one hits stuff, you know, but who cares? So anyhow, I mean, like, Do you believe that? Like, if you are at our age, we shouldn't wear certain things. Yes, and no, yes. And no. And I approach it as I don't really care what other people think I go with, I look at myself and say, I should not be wearing that. You know? Is there something you put on and you said to young? Well, I would like okay, let's talk about shoes. For example. I would not wear vans. You know, the skating shoes, that's just too too useful. But which is crazy, because vans are from the 80s. When we grew something, something should be left in it. Carry it on to because we wore it in an ad. No, I mean, can't do that. But that kind of reminds me I didn't see a funny, real or I don't have tick tock so I had to be a real but it was a gentleman in his 50s. who posed, I guess he has his own podcast, but who posed the question, and we should let me pause for a second. When next time we do this max, we're gonna have like, like a, like a music and maybe a an audio kind of thing. Am I too old for that? But here we go. The segment. Um, am I too old for this? Am I too old to wear Jordans? And that was the question that he posed. Okay, and how old was he? He was 5051 52. Okay. And he's like, I think I'm too old or joint. And I think I was drinking something at the time. And I did because I have Jordans out quite a few, you know, and I like my Jordans. And you know, it made me think Jordans. And you know what my conclusion was? Right? Oh, no, no, no, not to all words. Your logic between the Jordans like Jordans are also from a long time ago. Probably 80s But I couldn't I couldn't afford Jordans back then. So the I think that's a little bit different. I think Jordans now are somewhat of a luxury item right like status right? Well yeah, vans vans are kind of more useful I guess there's like 100% nine kids can wear join anybody can wear obviously, but you know they're they're not cheap. And they're becoming harder and harder to get there. You know, a lot of these brick and mortar sneaker stores are are closing I just read about the champs in the mall here shutting down. But now if the man who the shoe was designed for and and he owns you know that part of what the Jordan Brand if he can wear him and he's older than us if he can wear but by gosh, we can wear I think anybody can wear Jordans come home I think anybody can wear vans. It just depends on your style. You don't if you can pull it off. You know what I don't think a 50 year old man should his style should include vans. I just that's just me, just like those Jermaine Dupri sucks. I can't think of any fit that will say hey, man, I'm gonna kill him with these Amish shots or whatever hell he was wearing. It looks like a 1600s public defender. Yes. That is so amazing flowers. Yeah, that is so fun. But that is an extreme example. But women to you know, like, if you see a woman like wearing, you know, she's obviously middle aged and she's wearing like a tiny skirt or letting it all hang out. I mean, what are your thoughts on that? Like, do you mind that? Well, that's different. I mean, I think I guess I'm gonna be sexist here. But I think if you got the body to do it, then you should do it. I mean, I think you I think you should don't cross the line of being looking to study or to promiscuous or something like that nature. But I think you should, where there is a line that I think you should wear age appropriate clothing, but I think you can also mill that with being sexual. Being sexy, I should say not sexual, but sexy. Being sexy. You know, cuz women, women like to look good. Men like to look good. Men like to wear clothes. Correct. We wear clothes that accentuate, if we have muscles, that sort of thing, right? Like, you know, my friends are gonna laugh at me. But I have big arms like, you know, muscular type arm. So my fit will. I like to wear shirts and wood sleeves and everything that makes my arms look good. And then then then the rest of me is pretty much trashed. But my arms look good. So I'm aware I'll work clothes that that accentuate that. Now women, women can do the same thing. Alright, I think it is pull it off. And you're right. Some people are more fit. I mean, one thing that we talked we didn't talk about was the Superbowl commercials. Right with JLo and JLo. You know, she's always an example of, you know, she looks good. She's 54 years old. Before it looks like she could wear anything, right? So you can she can? Since you brought up JLo How did Ben Affleck and Matt Damon looked to? Ah, you mean older? I didn't say that. I just asked you. How did they look? Well? Definitely. Ben Affleck looks older. I think he's even showing some gray. Like I don't mind that. But he looks great. Now the problem is there skin. Yeah, I definitely you I think Ben looked better than Matt. I think Matt Yeah. Well, I think Matt had a lot of makeup on or something. Something he didn't he didn't quite look right. Yeah. He didn't look like I mean, of course he's gotten older and he's our age. He's just 33 benna flex. 51. Jayla is 54. Tom Brady's 46. Yeah, I mean, I guess I guess it is what it is. Yeah, I mean, age a little bit better than others. You know, partying, you know, they if we were in their shoes, don't you think it'd be kind of living it up and that takes a toll on your body? Not that we're not now but I feel like that lifestyle is just, you're gonna be staying up late. You're gonna be partying you're gonna argue so I mean, as far as Matt Damon is concerned, I don't I don't really remember him being in the news for being like a super party or anything like yeah, he's all about his lifestyle. Yeah, he's, I think he's basically been with like the same woman for for years. And you know, never hear about him like getting in trouble or visiting a dad that can age. That'll definitely he facts, facts. So yeah, I mean, I shouldn't be so so. So catty. Sorry, viewers and listeners out there. You know, it was a moment of weakness. I'm sorry. No, you know, fuck that. I'm gonna speak my mind. Actually, when you asked me about that, I do think that Matt Damon did look a little bit older, but maybe our view of what should you know, I mean, he's under a microscope. You know, he's on TV. So it's hard. Yeah. Like if I always think about I look when I'm on Zoom. Right now they touch up your look, you know, they touch up a face so but if somebody saw me in real life, they might be like, Whoa, yeah, he definitely didn't look like Jason Bourne anymore. Look far from it. Jason died or something. But yeah, but yeah. JLo looks. Yeah, I mean, he's great actor, you know, I'm being a little bit petty. Let JLo always look sensational. T pain and a plugin. Plugin Apple vision pros. Here we go again. What do you think we need to over this? Oh, no, no, no, no, listen, I am a nerd when it comes to like new technology, stuff like that I'm. I'm an early adopter. But why do you think you're an early adopter? Is it because you kind of work in technology? I've always been that kind of bright. I always wanted new to new game systems, or the handhelds back in the day surround sound and yes, surround sound always trying to talk my friends as far as TVs. Yeah. Back in the day when, you know, in high school, you know, I tried to have the best, you know, audio system in my car. Walkman, this man, you know, whatever I could get, you know, and, you know, I would always want to be on top of top of the game when it comes to the new technology, stuff like that. I think the apple vision is cool. I like it. I mean, I wish it wasn't four stacks, but hopefully it'll come down in price at some point. Hopefully. I just don't agree with T pain. I think he said he's going to work 24/7 He wants to avoid reality. Yeah. I mean, you know what? The Metaverse is cool. Sometimes I think you know, I've been known to skip social activities, and just be in the metaverse all weekend. You know, it's cool. But with that, I think it's just a little little too early in the game to be walking around with that, you know, walking through the airport or the mall? Is that another thing about? Are you too old to be looking like that or wearing? I think so. I really do. I really do. I think we should definitely try. But what is the deal with the metaverse? So you actually have a meta quest? I do I have a I forget what it was called. When did you get it? I've had it for two years. Okay. And so tell me about your experience with that, because I'm not really as familiar with it was it's, you know, it's a virtual reality system. So, so you just connect with whoever's on right. You can Yeah, you can interact with other meta quest users. You know, they'll have situations where you will be in a lobby somewhere or, or, or any type of deal where you could see people and what you see is like, their avatar, right. And it's kind of funny because avatars don't have legs. So it's just basically a torso and head. So did you make yours look like you? Or did you? Were you somebody? Yes. You make you can you I made my look like me, you know, Fly Fly black man outdoors? And, yeah. And yeah, it's cool. You know, you'll get into I think it's called metal world or horizon world. I'll name a couple of times. But you know, they'll have a situation where it's like a made up like a virtual bar, or virtual club, so you can go in there with a little avatar and talk and you know, Hey, ladies. Hey, what's up, dude? Blah, blah, blah. Bunch of people. Yeah, so people Yeah. 100%. And, you know, just talking about whatever I had some gentleman give me a dissertation about cryptocurrency at one point, and I had to politely excused. Which is easy, because you just log out. You know what I mean? It's not like you have to, you know, in the like, in a real setting. You have to find a way to get out of the rooms. I just did. Yes. Yeah. So do you are you just sitting the whole time? No, it depends on what you're doing. So they'll have games for example, so they're like I played there a few times. I played a buddy of mine to my buddies. I haven't and we did like bowling. We did golf. Oh, that's fun. Yeah. So yes, a second you know, for virtual reality game like we're we can see the other person bowling a strike or bowling or whatever you see, see the other person's swinging their club and do all that kind of stuff. So it's really cool. Did you would you do it for hours and hours? I'd do it for hours. I would do it for hours. I mean, I can't tell you how many hours I love playing virtual golf. I played a lot of the I don't know what they what it's called. But the beat thing where there's music playing and there's like a visual representation of the beats you have to hit Yeah, you have to hit it. You know, it's a good little workout. And there was like, a zombie game I used to play all the time I kill the zombies. And I'll cut off there was a football game where I was a, it was a team, like pick an NFL team. And I was a quarterback. So I would, you know, receive the hike, and I'd have to throw the ball to the receivers and everything. So it's pretty cool. Yeah, that's cool. Yeah, I need to get back into it. It's been a while since I've done it. But you're more into that then like Apple vision Pro? Yeah, because what I read about the vision Pro is there's there's no, there's no other interaction with other users. So you're basically in there by yourself. Okay, so lying. Yeah, exploring, putting up screens like YouTube or any kind of, I don't know, documents or whatever productivity apps and stuff like productivity apps, I should say, you're kind of in this just your own little world and you just put it you know, you can see the real world so with the meta quests, you can't see what's around you what's around, you're totally immersed in the in the VR world with the with the Apple vision, you can see the real world and then you can see whatever you You're messing with in there. So that's a pretty cool thing about it. But once I feel like once they find a way to make it so that you can react with other share experiences with other Apple vision users, I think that's well we'll take it over. I don't care about the interacting with other people. Thanks for joining us for this episode of midlife marauders. Follow us on social media and wherever you stream your podcast.
