About the Co-hosts:
Will & Max are long-lost college friends who met at the University of Virginia where they co-chaired Crosswinds, the college DJ-ing club. The two have taken divergent paths over the years with Will remaining on the East Coast and leading a charmed life as a bachelor, and Max living overseas for more than a decade and now spending way too much time arranging carpools for her kids and researching meal kit plans.
They started the Midlife Marauders podcast as a way to catch up with one another as well as to engage with, motivate and entertain their peers. The podcast title is a nod to A Tribe Called Quest’s 1993 album, “Midnight Marauders.”

Midlife Marauders
Lenny in leather, Rock Hall midlifers, dating red flags in midlife
The Marauders chat about Lenny Kravitz's achievements, including working out in mesh and leather and getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame--and being nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame but unfortunately being snubbed (as did Mariah Carey). Celebrating midlifers who did get into the Rock Hall, including A Tribe Called Quest, Mary J. Blige and Dave Matthews Band. Chatting about whether being unmarried with no kids is a dating red flag, and whether it's okay to get work done or other enhancements.
Thanks for listening--keep on marauding!
Have you been doing any marauding lately? Any progress? Ah, marauding. i Well, I've been sticking out to a pretty consistent workout schedule. Yeah, that's pretty happy about that. Yeah. diet has been pretty decent as the doubleheader little had a burger today. It's not the worst thing in the world, but I had a bag of chips to go with it. So that's probably worse than the burger. If you're not eating that every day. It's not that big of a deal. Oh, no, no, no, no, I've been avoiding fast foods and all that stuff. So I've been pretty good. I've been pretty good. I'm sore as heck, my. My neck is sore today. My back. I've been having something with my shoulder. I'm pretty sure I may have like a combination of tennis elbow and a rotator cuff issue. But we were gonna say, is that from working out or from working like at a computer? No, no, no, it's definitely working with. I'm pretty sure it's from golf to be. Oh, yeah. No golf. Isn't that funny? I think I have golf elbow even though I don't play golf. But you have tennis elbow. Yeah. I mean, that's, I guess that's the universal thing or, yeah, something. So yes, it's my body. I mean, I feel good. I mean, I feel like, you know, the workouts are going well, the, you know, I feel like I'm becoming a little bit more muscular or whatever, but it hasn't been that long. So I mean, just I see small little gains. That's good. Yeah. But, you know, my body's like, Hey, buddy, you're 54 year though. Can't do that young stuff anymore. But you know what? We're gonna make it work. Right? Absolutely. breaks down. Yeah, for sure. Speed of the workout. So funny video of a gentleman our age. Marauders be working out in leather pants. Oh, I saw that as well. A lot of buzz about that. Right. A lot of buses gentleman named Lenny Kravitz, who we probably all know was seeing working out good for him. I mean, the mid lifers we gotta get out. We got to keep our body in tune. And he's in great shape. But his workout attire was an ask questions, right? Yeah, leather pants. Come on. Lenny. I get you know, you have this rockstar aura and all this. But come on, man. We could go for like some Lulu lemons or some workout clothes. And that would mess with his brand, though. You know what I mean? Is that I guess so. Does he have to stay in character? 24/7 I think it would be weird to see him like now that you've now that you've seen him working out in those leather pants and the mesh shirt. I can't picture him like going in shorts or you know, like the typical workout where and then it's kind of like what we say like when you're our age. You shouldn't give a fuck, right? Oh, you know, you shouldn't care. People think you know, you know you went to the midlife award today. You You call me out on that? No fucks given here I am. And I'm talking and letting you know. You got me today. You got a good one Max. No fucks given off was given Lenny Kravitz Keep doing your thing keep marauding out there with the leather pants on. And you're in your seat through whatever shirt you had on there. And I guess he had all his bracelets and all that accoutrement on or whatever you need to work out and get it done. I mean, it can't make cannabis uncomfortable. But you know if it works for him, but you know, I started you know, when I read up on him, or you know, I was looking at all the social media. And so then I go down this rabbit hole, like, oh, what's he up to these days? Right. So I guess he got his star on the Walk of set. What is it called? The Walk of Fame? Yeah, in Hollywood. Yeah. Now there was a really touching speech from his daughter. So I know why. But then I also saw from Zoe Kravitz. Mm hmm. So she gave a really funny speech toxic talking about his mesh shirts. But then also, I guess he I went to his website, and he's like, Oh, I was nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. So vote for me, right. So Right. Okay. I started to vote but then you have to register and all this stuff. So I didn't vote, but he didn't make it. Oh, no. You never thought he would been well deserved that honor. I did see who was the inductees? I saw the list. inductees are in our kinda generation here. I shout out to Mary J. Blige. And I tried. Yeah, absolutely. Share lifers out there. Mirotic Well, Oh yeah, Michelle to call out the run out the list. It was Cher, Dave Matthews, who I believe is our age. Yeah, he's probably foreigner. Foreigner Peter Frampton cool in the gang group I grew up on listen to a lot. And as he was born, so shout out all them. But since this is a midlife podcast, we want to give a real deep, hearty congratulations to Mary Jay and Dave Matthews and the Tribe Called Quest. Yeah. What did you think you told me earlier? What is the quote? What's the initial qualification for getting into that, or being one of those things where you, they have a nominating committee, right. And then they open it up to the public. And then they have some panel also, it's kind of like the Oscars where you know, you belong to some group. And then you get, you know, you're able to do the voting or be on the committee. So there's, I think, you know, some historians or experts that are on this nominating committee, and then the selection committee, but it's also influenced by the public's vote. So if you have a lot of fans, you know, it's a little bit like, I guess, American Idol, you know, when they open it up to a public vote. And so that's how they selected them. But I think it's a combination here. So it's weird, because I think, first of all, it's kind of weird that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame includes so many genres. I remember when that first when they started first opening it up, I was like, What is going on? Right? It's like change the name or, you know, I don't know. It just seemed like they opened up to everybody. But um, Mariah Carey was nominated didn't get in and think about like, right, so if you think about how you exclude Mariah Carey, I don't know. But I think that you can be nominated multiple times and not get in, you know, so maybe, maybe this is the first time she was nominated. And she didn't get in, but maybe she didn't have enough fans voting for her. Wow. Well, I think maybe you told me I read somewhere that you have to have released something at least 25 years before your first recording has to have been 25 years ago. So so then that means you have to have had longevity, I guess although I don't know if Peter Frampton or foreigner about out anything out recently. But um, they probably can't really get around for a while. So of the midlife piece of marriage J. Dave Matthews Tribe Called Quest do any of them have a, like a special meaning to you? Or, or, or one that kind of resonates more with you? Well, I remember when Mary Jays her big album, I'm not sure if it was probably wasn't our first one but the one with real love on it. So big and everybody loves, right? Like she's, she's always seemed to kind of be around or, you know, you see her on stage everywhere. So I think that, you know, look at that you're like, Oh, that makes sense. I liked her when I was growing up, but I didn't think they should beat out. Ryan Murphy or Lenny Kravitz. That's kind of crazy. Class. So we've got our podcast named after Dave Matthews. He was a big UBA. Yeah. He's from Charlotte. Yes, yeah. South African but I believe he moves public to Charlottesville. Like really? Yeah, I think we're seeing Dave Matthews when we were in school. Max When? When he wasn't well known at all. And I remember seeing him playing at the downtown Mall. Oh, wow. Yeah, just just playing out there. Did you know who he was? No, no, I he had just become somewhat of a local celebrity or you know, you know, some renown in Charlottesville. So I had heard the name and then when he blew up, obviously, you know, I was like, Well, I saw him when he was you know, basically playing in an outdoor mall kind of situation so that's cool. Shout out to Dave Matthews you could have taken obviously Tribe Called Quest is near and dear to my heart. That's what the name of this podcast is inspired from one of their songs you know, had an opportunity to see them live. You know, recipes to five dog. Obviously that's one that's near and dear but but you're right about Mary J. Mary J. has found a way to stay relevant and contemporary. You know, she's aged gracefully. He's very, very well done or anything. I will say, you know, there, there have been a few times Max. Where, you know, we touched on this before. I'm a sensitive person, but I'm not a very emotional person. So that, you know, the difference is I don't, I don't, like poor I don't like cry, or do any kind of that stuff. So you're sensitive, but you don't cry. Yeah, don't cry. You're okay. You're not emotional. It is within. There's no outpouring of emotion from it. That makes sense. Okay. Okay. Yes, you are happy. Right? Right. Yeah. Yeah, not not too high or too low. I kind of keep it in between. So for, I guess, we will want to call this like maybe some self healing, or to kind of get these emotions out. I used to have, and I probably need to go back to this. But I used to have, I would dedicate a day where I said, Alright, I'm going to clean my house. Right. So my routine of cleaning my house would be, I would put on, like, sad music like love songs. Right. Okay. And I would drink wine. Right? Wait, what's this? How long this music came out? This is Yeah, I mean, this has been, you know, I've done it a few times. It's been, right. So, you know, usually it's like, maybe if it's like a dreary Saturday day or something like that, right. And so, you know, I need to get in touch with my emotions. My you know, okay. So I would start cleaning. And I would put on like a, like a playlist of like, breakup songs or anything that was kind of sad. And I would crack open a bottle of wine, and I would clean and drink wine and listen to sad songs. And I would think about really funny. Yeah. The upbeat stuff to know because I'm trying to get these emotions out, you know? At work? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. So I'm doing this I'm drinking wine. I'm thinking about, like, you know, women who are loved and lost or have been dumped, or any kind of like sad things that have happened. And I haven't really had an opportunity to let my emotions out over these things. And I would clean and drink wine and listen to songs and there were tears. I was gonna ask you, if that's exactly what it was. It's just a emotional dump, so to speak, and I would cry and sit there and just drink and reflect that song of hers. What do you listen to? Oh, Mary's got many songs about her being, you know, you know, being ran over being done bad and stuff like that. I mean, I can't. So yeah, she's kind of the queen of that. But yeah, it would just be like, some sad songs. And yeah, and I would just man just, and I would just have all this time and, and to be honest, I didn't really do a great job of cleaning. It was just something to do to keep. keep me going. But yeah, it was those were those were really therapeutic for me. And I probably need to have another one. Yeah, so shout out to the Rock Hall of Fame. She deserved it, you should tell her that story. Twitter and let her know how much of an impact she's had on my life and how she is affected my my wellness, you know, so to speak. So shout out the mirror shot. So I ran into a situation the other night I want to get I want to get your opinion about something. Okay. Okay, so I was out last weekend. And I was with some friends and they kind of petered out and they left and I just found myself in a bar slash restaurant by myself. All right, so I'm having a cocktail or whatever. And I see this, this young lady, not young lady, but this lady comes up to the bar. And she's with a girl. Did you think she was well? i When you saw I did not. I did not formulate that kind of opinion. Do you do that when you see somebody you do size them up and kind of think so cool. as well, okay. Age is not the top priority. It's not the first thing. Okay, let's she was she was attractive. However, she was wearing workout gear. Okay, I'm gonna circle the other pants work. But she was wearing workout gear and it was probably like 1010 30. Right? Okay, so I'm out on a cocktail, and I'd see these two women sitting next to me now. The one I'm talking about was closer to Me and her friend was opposite her. Okay, so something happens, blah, blah, blah. I'm talking about something. I don't know, I don't know how the conversation got initiated. But somehow we're all talking. Right. And I, you know, I had already kind of size her up, and she looks good. You know, let's just see where this goes. And somehow age comes up. Now, I know that these ladies are they're not 20, not 30. I would have put them on late 40s to 50s. Okay. All right. Just just as a general look, you know, I'm not like, you know, looking for crow's feet or wrinkles or anything like that. Just so you know, generally, like when you add a glance, you kind of figure Yeah, thank you. Right. At a glance. So somehow, we get to talk about age, right. So I believe the woman that was absolutely me, who I wasn't really talking to, she tells me that she's 50 something. I can't remember what she said. And I said, I'm from 50. Something to write. So the one I guess I had sort of developed an interest in tells me that oh, I'm 60 I almost did like a split take you ever seen those companies split across the room? So I'm gonna say like a spit take. And I was like, There's no way this girl is 16. Well, she was so but here's the here's the interesting part. So we start going into our, you know, we started getting to our bio, so to speak, right? Okay, so she asked me hey, have you ever been married? I said, No. Marry you guys got there quick. Right? Yeah. About personal stuff. Yeah, I mean, look, we're old. Oh, well, no, but we're, we we got a Yeah, we got time for. I tell her no, I'm never married. No kids. You know, I'm kind of a unicorn out here. So I like to think of myself always putting the puzzle. And then she tells me that she has. No, I see. No. No. And I'm like, wow. And I'm thinking, Okay, this is this is rare. Very rare. I can't complain, or I can't cast any aspersions because I've never been married or have kids, right. So it doesn't come up as a as a red flag to me. Okay. But it is odd and it's rare. Okay. So the night goes on, we dance a little bit, blah, blah, blah. We exchanged numbers, and that was pretty much it. Okay. So, the next day. I'm talking to a buddy of mine. And he said, Hey, what happened last night. I was like, Oh, I was talking to this girl, blah, blah. You know, what she looked like what she looked like. So I had to find her on Facebook. I found her on Facebook. That's Oh, man. She's killed. What's the story? I say she's 60. And I thought he would be like, oh, man, come on, bro. But no, he's like, wow, she's he's 40 something 40 Yeah, he might be 41. Okay, so. So that doesn't really ringing alarms for him, right? So I said, yeah, she's 60. And that's cool. I say Yeah. What'd she say? Well, we'll set up today. Well, I mean, now she's cool. She's never been married and never kissed. He's like, whoa, hold up. What? I said no, I shouldn't have sacked him but yes, like, abort. Abort. Don't Don't Don't call her Don't text her. Oh, my What? It's like she crazy. Well, I never I kiss. She's crazy. He goes to his When I don't know what friend was, is, hey, if you met a chick over 40 something, whatever, 45 never been married, never had kids, what would you think? Oh, she crazy dog. So it was kind of a good thing, right? Like, wouldn't you think? In your mind, do you think, oh, it's kind of a good thing that you have to deal with any kids? And you could just be both. Yes, that baggage. They're looking at it as like, like, a flag. Something's wrong with her. So where do these narratives come where we get to our Middle Ages and with women, and it gives me the same for men to wear. No marriage. No kids crazy. Men. No kids gay now. Yeah, I know. George Clooney. Right. George Clooney. Yeah. You know, cool. Bachelor. Good looking dating around. He doesn't have kids. Oh, he got married. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. You know, after a while he got and now I think he has kids but right. So do you get that a lot though. Or people? Get I don't get I don't get the news. Well, must be gay. Or at least I've never heard of it. I don't get that. But I have heard that about other gentlemen. Like, you know, my age or older like, well, what's what's wrong? Like? Maybe he doesn't like women? Right? And but the women it's always, you know, once you get past 445, like no marriage, no kids. She's batshit. Crazy. And I'm like that. I mean, obviously they're cute. Did you call her You didn't call her? No, I have not called her. And is it because of that discussion with your friends? Oh, I just say yes. Say yes. Say yes. Now your thing. Yeah. Now that you're saying she could be crazy like I'm starting to think about like, what was that movie with Glenn Close where she boiled the rabbit fatal attraction so I just don't I don't I don't buy into that narrative is crazy. Oh, yeah, very much sir. stereotypes. And I you know, it's just like, types, right? But it was just so funny. The front was like, she didn't care. 60 no marriage. No kids. Oh, my God. I think you should give her a chance. A chance. We'll send you just go out on one date. TBD. Yeah. Well, we'll see. I leave that as a teaser, a cliffhanger. Did we'll go out with this 60 year old woman with no, never been married. No kids Bump, bump bump ball will say Do you think people should? Okay? When you get older? Should you try to do things to make your light? Should you dye your hair? Or should you get Botox or should you do things to make yourself look younger? Yes and no. Like, I'm all for your mental well being and if you feel like that makes it it's gonna make you feel better. Yeah. And give you more confidence. Yeah, yeah, you know, confidence, do it. I do think that people can go overboard with it. And you need someone to tell you hey, you're you're going a little too hard with that, you know? But you know, it's kind of like this whole ozempic thing is you know, it's it's it's good that people can get to having an availability option to to get their weight down and feel better about themselves. I think that is a good thing. Just like Botox and lip fillers or whatever filler whatever you want to do with yourself. Plastic Surgery. I don't think it's a bad thing, but I think we need to be careful about going too far. Too far. Like if I knew there were no there were no side effects or things and maybe, like open to even like like, whitening your teeth and I was like, oh, I should do it. But I tell people all the time. Don't be shocked when I come come come come around. I got brand new set of teeth. It's gonna have the biggest way I don't have bad teeth. I just they're not terrible. They're I mean, they're not. It's just like anything else. Like, that's so funny. It's like anything else? What you what what you See in other what other people see, or it can be totally different. You know what I mean? So for me, I've always wanted to have a big white set of teeth. Now my teeth aren't bad, but I always wanted better teeth. And at some point, I'm just gonna do it. I'm just gonna get veneers not telling anybody and just show up. Thanks for joining us for this episode of midlife marauders. Follow us on social media and wherever you stream your podcast.
