Word of the Day: Anointed-Who Benefits When You Stay Small
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
The hardest part of growth is not the work, it is the reaction. When you finally stop asking for permission and start walking in purpose, some people do not just disagree, they take it personally. We talk about that shift and why it happens when God gives you a vision directly, especially if someone has gotten comfortable acting like the “middleman” to your gift.
We unpack the word of the day, “anointed,” and get honest about the blurry line between mentorship and control. Support is healthy. Community is healthy. But when guidance turns into ownership, the relationship starts demanding compliance instead of celebrating maturity. We bring Scripture into it, including John 10:27, to ground the core message: God can speak to us directly, and obedience to God can offend people who benefited from our hesitation.
We also revisit David’s anointing in 1 Samuel 16 and Joseph’s dream in Genesis 37, because this pattern is not new. People misjudge who God selects. People cling to the old version of you. And when your gift starts making room for you, some folks only reveal their true posture when they can no longer manage your movement. If you have felt the pressure of gatekeepers, shifting goalposts, or spiritual control dressed up as “covering,” this conversation gives language, clarity, and a path forward rooted in discernment.
If you’re ready to stop shrinking and start building what God told you to build, press play. Then subscribe, share this with a friend who needs freedom today, and leave a review that helps more people find the show.
Girl, you got this. Yes.
Word Of The Day
SPEAKER_03Good morning, good afternoon, good evening, wherever you are. This is the listen, Linda's word of the day. Now, the word of the day is anointed. Listen, Linda. Some people don't realize they cross the line from support and took control. And that's what we're talking about today,
Support Turns Into Control
SPEAKER_03okay? Because there are moments in life where God will force you to recognize the difference between somebody helping you grow and somebody getting comfortable with managing your gift. See, there are people who celebrate your potential as long as they believe they have authority over it, right? But the minute you move without their approval, the minute you stop waiting for permission, the minute you realize that God gave you the vision directly. Oh no, now they offended child. Oh no. Now they feel betrayed. You betrayed them now, right? Now suddenly they're acting like your obedience to God requires to staff me. Are they serious right now? And let me say this carefully, okay? Because this is deeper than business. This is spiritual too. Okay. Some people become so accustomed to being the middleman in your life that they forget God can speak to you directly. My sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me. That's John 10 27. So did you hear that? Huh? God didn't say my sheep hear everybody else's opinion first. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, honey, honey. No, he said, sheep hear his voice, and sometimes obedience is gonna offend people who benefited from your hesitation.
SPEAKER_00Every time you call my name, every time you call him a name.
David Overlooked Then Anointed
SPEAKER_03Okay, now let's go back to the Bible because this ain't new. When David was anointed king, his own family almost looked over him completely. Samuel came to Jesse's house asking to see his sons, and David wasn't even invited into the room at first. That was in 1 Samuel 16. Why is that? Because people will often misjudge the one God selected. But I'm got I'm God's favorite. But I've been misjudged, believe it or not. Oh, she ain't been here long enough, she ain't been practicing scripture long enough, she don't even know the word. Oh, she she read the Bible, but she she ain't did this to elevate that, she did this to do that, baby. God don't call a qualified, he qualifies to call. I don't have to get all these different things for God to tell me things, and for me to for me to hear his voice, and for me to for him to tell me, you know what? I want you to tell this to the people. Some people will get so familiar with the old you and your old position that they cannot mentally adjust when God elevates you. I just had a friend walk across the stage, get her honorary doctorate the other day, and people in the church putting negative comments. Oh, I ain't see it. You ain't gotta see it when God calls somebody and He gives somebody a blessing, He don't need you to be in the audience. That's why certain folks get uncomfortable when you stop asking, can I? and start walking like God already told me yes. Who Jesus?
When Guidance Is Really Ownership
SPEAKER_03No, and let's talk about something people don't want to admit. Control often disguises itself as guidance. I'm your mentor, I'm gonna teach you. Ain't taught me nothing, ain't taught me nothing. Anytime I tried to learn more than I knew, they'll send me on a mission, or they won't tell me nothing at all. So, no, for the record, nobody taught me nothing. God gave me my gifts. Only heaven knows there's a difference between I'm proud of you and you should have checked with me first. One empowers, the other assumes ownership over you, and baby, people do not own what God placed inside of you. Let me repeat that louder for the people in the back. People do not own what God placed inside of you, buddy, for the gifts and the calling of God are without repentance. That's Romans 11 29. That means God didn't accidentally anoint you, He didn't mistakenly give you the vision, He didn't forget to ask somebody else for their permission before placing purpose inside of you, and honestly, sometimes people become angry because they were comfortable being needed. But growth changes dynamics, honey. See, mentorship is healthy, support is healthy, community is healthy, that is all healthy, but when somebody starts acting personally offended because you finally trusted the gift God gave you, that's not always wisdom talking. Sometimes that's ego struggling with the loss of control.
Joseph’s Dream Offended The Room
SPEAKER_03Joseph experienced this too. The dream God gave Joseph irritated people because it revealed a future where he would no longer remain beneath them, and they hated him even more because of his dream. That's Genesis 37 and 8. Catch that. The dream exposes what people were uncomfortable accepting, and some of y'all listening right now are entering seasons where your growth is exposing, his and is exposing hidden insecurity and people around you. You didn't harm them, you didn't disrespect them, but because your obedience reminded them that God can elevate anybody He chooses. Let's be real. Sometimes people support your gift as long as it's benefiting them. But when the gift starts making room for you directly, that's when the energy changes. A man's gift makes room for him. That's Proverbs 18 and 6. I talked about it yesterday on the panel discussion that we were having yesterday. Your gift, not their permission, not their approval, not their control, your gift, and let me say this because somebody needs freedom today.
Stop Waiting For Permission
SPEAKER_03You are allowed to grow beyond people's expectations of you. You are to build, you are allowed to build what God told you to build, you are allowed to trust your own discernment, you are allowed to stop waiting for validation from people who keep moving the goalpost every time you evolve. Because some people will never feel comfortable with your confidence if it benefited from your self-doubt. And honestly, sometimes God intentionally removes the trainer wheels because he's tired of you asking humans for confirmation on assignment that he already approved in heaven. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding. That's Proverbs 3 and 5. Notice it says, trust God, not personalities, not titles, not gatekeepers, not people who think they think that access equals ownership. So today's word of the day is this stop acting like you need permission to walk in purpose. If God told you to move, move. If he told you to build, build. If he told you to launch it, release it. And if God gave you the vision, you're gonna trust him enough to obey him because the same people questioning your confidence today may be the same people that shocked by your elevation tomorrow. And baby, if anybody has a problem with the fact that God finally showed you what was inside of you the whole time, respectfully, tell them to take it up with God.
