Our season 5 closer is a real treat! We have an incredible guest, Liz Allen, improv performer, director, coach, teacher and guru Liz Allen. Liz has performed and coached improv for 32 years! She works primarily out of iO in Chicago, (This is a big deal people!) but she has performed and coached improv all over the world, notably at the Edinburgh Fringe and, oh, by the way, she coached The Commune, the improv ensemble in Mike Birbiglia’s 2016 feature film Don’t Think Twice, NBD. (This actually blows Sarah’s mind as Mike Birbiglia is her fave comedian.) Recently, Liz has been delving into solo show writing and performance, she recently performed her first solo show, Tonight I Am My Mother, and is completing her next solo show, There Were Signs, about her years in Las Vegas with her husband and their offspring. This is how Sarah met Liz, on an online solo show class with The Barrow Group, which is one good thing we can say about the pandemic. Okay, she sounds amazing, but how does she end up as a guest on Comedicine? Well, before discovering improv, Liz was a mechanical engineer! What? She worked for fifteen years as a consulting engineer and pharmaceutical technical writer. One night, on a lark, she joined some friends seeing a show at The Second City in downtown Chicago…and Liz got bit by improv. Do engineering and improv mesh? You be the judge!

Elaine Miller, Fanny and Me! 
 
In this episode of Comedicine, we get to talk to pelvic physiotherapist and comedian, Elaine Miller. Elaine Miller is a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, specialising in women’s health.  She started doing stand-up comedy as a hobby, finding the lighter side of female urinary incontinence. In doing so, she found a way to reach and educate women about their fannies.  Elaine lives in Edinburgh, home of the biggest Arts festival in the world, so the obvious next step for her was to write and perform a solo show about pelvic floors at the Edinburgh Fringe. Gusset Grippers, won the Comedy Award at Fringe World, Australia in 2020.  Her second show, Viva Your Vulva, the Hole Story, was one of only two shows to be awarded five stars in 2023.  She collaborated with Monash University on a paper examining humour as a health promotion tool and her #DryByChristmas social media campaign reminding women to do their pelvic floor exercises was published by Rosie Haper from Bournemouth University. Elaine shares some incredible facts, like 50% of women don’t know the difference between the vulva and the vagina. FIFTY PERCENT PEOPLE! This is just not acceptable to Elaine. It is also not acceptable that it takes and average of 7 years for women to get medical help with incontinence. SEVEN YEARS!! The good news is that once you find a pelvic physio, most women get better! Through humour, Elaine is trying to change the world. One vagina at a time.

Theatre is Life with Stephanie Goss 

How does a degree in theatre and music help you run a veterinary hospital? Let me count the ways! Our guest in this episode is Stephanie Goss. Stephanie started out with a plan to be in the theatre, but on the production management side. Then she transitioned to teaching. Then she transitioned into veterinary medicine. She is not afraid to make changes or take chances. We talk about her career path from receptionist to veterinary technician to practice manager to working for the Uncharted Veterinary Conference. Uncharted is a great word for Stephanie’s career, but it’s honestly working out for her. She is the co-host of the Uncharted Veterinary Podcast with friend of Comedicine, Dr Andy Roark. Taking Care of the Black Dog with Velina Taskov

This episode was such a treat! Sarah gets to sit down and chat with comedian and veterinary technician Velina Taskov. Velina is Australian, but she now calls British Columbia her home. Velina is working towards a balance between relief work as a veterinary technician and stand up comedy. She is has found great success in both of her careers. A natural story-teller, Velina Taskov has taken the stage by storm both internationally and locally and has been seen at such events as; Kamcomedy Fest, Calgary Funny Fest, Kelowna’s Fringe Festival, Grindstone Comedy Festival, Hubcap Comedy Fest, Melbourne International comedy festival and Just For Laughs NW. She recorded on CBC LOL radio program for the 2022 Okanagan Comedy Festival.

Dr Janice Baker, Veteran, Veterinarian, Thespian 

Dr Janice Lauren Baker has had an amazing career. She started out working with horses with a plan to become an equine veterinarian. She then joined the army and served 22 years in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve, over half of this time in Special Operations assignments.  Special Ops People!!!! She spent the bulk of her military career taking care of working dogs. In addition to having worked over 20 years in emergency practice, she is a board-certified specialist in Veterinary Preventive Medicine with a Master's Degree in Veterinary Forensics. Sarah didn’t know that being board-certified in Veterinary Preventative Medicine was a thing either. She is now a part time ER veterinarian and runs a Veterinary Forensics Consulting business, taking care of law enforcement on animal-related cases. Janice started acting professionally in her mid-fifties as a sort of "retirement hobby." This quickly turned into getting work in film, television, and commercials. Not afraid to be typecast, she has played the body on crime shows several times, along with crazy cat ladies, nosy neighbors, and most recently, The President of the United States of America! Janice is known for her comedic, improvisation, and character actor work. I loved everything about talking to Janice. She is fascinating, inspirational and humble!

S5 - E3 - Emily in Research - Emily Tang

In this episode, we stretch the definition of health care a bit for our delightful guest, Emily Tang. Despite the pressure to become a doctor, Emily learned early on that she is not good with nightshifts or bodily fluids, especially blood, so doctor fell off the list of possible jobs. Emily is a full-time Master's student at the University of British Columbia. Her Master's research thesis is on social media and its influences on sexual health education for immigrant women. Emily and Sarah try to solve all of the problems caused by social media in this episode and we get so close! Emily discovered the UBC Comedy Club when she started her Master’s and now spends her spare time writing and performing stand-up comedy. She takes inspiration from her experiences as a first-generation Chinese immigrant, arriving in Canada at the age of 8. Emily has advocated for sexual health since high school, and she is also currently the Vice President of the graduate student society at UBC, advocating for government policies related to post-secondary education, sexualized violence, and well-being. Emily comes from a conservative Chinese cultural belief where sexual health is viewed as taboo, she wants to use stand-up comedy as another way to advocate for Asian women. I can’t wait to see what she does next!

Vet-fluencer Life with Dr Molly Says 

In this episode, we get a chance to talk to Dr Molly Brinkmann, who is a veterinarian and content creator in the veterinary space. Molly loves people as much as she loves animals, which is not the norm for veterinary peeps. Like many of our guests, she is a polymath. She creates comedy videos for veterinarians and pet owners that educate (a bit) and entertain (a lot). She also is medical director of a small animal hospital in Franklin, Tennessee and she is the founder of The Companion Project, which brings veterinary services to people in need. She also runs a housing ministry and, did I mention she is a mom. How does she do all these things? No one knows! We get into important veterinary clinical topics like horses = cats and dogs = calves and we also share how Figs doesn’t want either of us to sell their fancy scrubs, which actually makes Sarah feel a lot better about herself. Dr. Eugene Gorodetsky is a veterinary mobile endoscopist in Vancouver. Do you know Kim Kerley?  

In this episode, we get to know Kim Kerley. She is very special and she knows it!! Kim spent most of her teens homeless, but through sheer determination, she got herself through school and university and is now a teacher and school counsellor, as well as a stand up comedian. A keen observer of life's crazy conditions, her comedy comes from seeking the funny in real life. Kim has been performing stand-up comedy for over 20 years. She is based in San Antonio and has traveled extensively in the U.S. and abroad. Kim also, acted with the comedy group, Laff Stock and Dramatic Diva Productions in the San Antonio area and has appeared in feature films with Mutt Productions. She has appeared on The View and The Mike Huckabee Show. Her Dry Bar Comedy special, Do you Know Her and has over 20 million views and it’s also available as an album on Spotify.   
 
Kim’s skills go beyond comedy as she helmed San Antonio’s number 2 drive time morning radio show. The day after being told she was one of the fastest rising women on the radio, she was fired. The fall from radio fame and a paycheck had her seeking miracles for money for small things like food, mortgage payments and those teenage girls she was raising as a single mom. It was during this time so many miracles did come her way, and she began to document and eventually write about her journey, which has now branched out to public speaking and writing.  

Kim stays busy sharing her life and journey. She dares you to define the funny in life. “My wish is we can all find our sparkle.”

Cracking Jokes and Cracking Backs  

On this episode, we talk to our first chiropractor! Dr Michael Friedman joins us from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, which is also where Sarah lives now so we are neighbours! Cool. Michael tells us about the pros and cons of practicing as a chiropractor and his stand up comedy, which has been something that he always wanted to do. He finally took the plunge in 2013 and he hasn’t looked back. Micheal is a regular around the Ottawa comedy scene and he has also travelled around Canada with his comedy. We get into the very controversial topic of dishwasher loading and Sarah flexes her nerd muscles hard and out-nerds Michael with her utensile loading system! Michael also tells us about a patient who did not think a chiropractor should be a stand up comedian because it is not professional and this led Sarah to think that this woman might be dead inside. On this episode of Comedicine, we get to know Lacey Pitcher, Registered Veterinary Nurse and she is a DELIGHT!!!! Lacey shares her insights as a veterinary nurse and the editor of the VN Times. Lacey has found her voice as an author and, although she tends to be most inspired by anger, she loves to give her thoughts on the topics of the day in veterinary medicine. It’s Opposite Day With Rob Lewin!!! This episode is very exciting because it is opposite day with Rob Lewin! Rob is an improviser and sketch comedian living in Guelph, Ontario. His live comedy credits include The Second CityToronto FamCo,The Making-Box Brigade, The Bad Dog Featured Players and festivals such as Toronto Sketchfest, Detroit Improv Festival, Del Close Marathon NYC, and Montreal Improv Festival. He teaches improv and sketch classes with Pinch and you see his sketch duo Corpse perform around Guelph and Kitchener-Waterloo. Unlike every other (wonderful) Comedicine guest, who is a health care professional first and then transitions into comedy, Rob has been improvising since before his brain was fully formed. (Grade 9!) Rob is currently in his second year of the Practical Nursing program at Conestoga College. Yes, he is going to keep on doing improv, sketch and teaching improv AND doing nursing, but not at the same time. Would it be cool to teach nurses about improv with his background? Maybe it would, but that’s not what Rob is doing here people! Have a listen, Rob is a wonderful improviser, comedian and human and he whoever ends up with him as their nurse and/or in his audience and/orin his improv class is very lucky!!!

The Art and Science of Cat Carriers

In this episode, Sarah gets to know Dr. Mansum Yau. Mansum is a small animal veterinarian who likes to blend her love of animals, jokes, writing and cartoons. Her main gig is locum small animal veterinarian in Vancouver. Mansum is passionate about educating pet parents about things that people in veterinary medicine take for granted, but she also has a wonderful way of looking at the world through a cat’s eyes. She is the author/illustrator of The Ins and Outs of Cat Carriers: A Veterinarian’s Guide, featuring tips and tricks on cat carriers, cat cartoons, jokes, puns, funny poems, and more! She lets us know that stuffing a cat in a cat carrier for vet visits and then scruffing them and dragging them out may not the be best plan for you or your cat. Who knew?

Mansum loves drawing cartoons, writing humour, performing stand-up comedy, and public speaking. Born in Hong Kong, Mansum grew up in Syria and Lebanon and graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2010. Fun fact, Sarah was one of her professors in vet school! Dr Mike McClenahan aka Bow Tie Vet Guy is a veterinarian, stand up comedian, author, musician, podcaster and lecturer. He is a 1997 graduate of Iowa State CVM, and has spent time in private practice, as a senior veterinary services consultant for Bayer Animal Health, and as a relief veterinarian. He is currently in general practice in LA and he loves it! Ninja Warrior fans! Everyone else!We have the wonderful Matt Iseman as our guest on this special episode of Comedicine!Matt is the cohost of NBC’s reality competition show “American Ninja Warrior”. He is a comedian and actor and has hosted several other TV shows. Oh, and he won an Emmy, there’s that. Before all of this, Matt was a physician. During his internal medicine residency, he made the life-changing decision to move to LA to pursue comedy. WHO DOES THAT??!??? Matt does. Matt had the support of his parents, including his father who was a world-renowned pulmonologist. When Matttold his parents he was leaving medicine, his father said, “Life is short. Do what makes you happy.” Great advice then and now and alwaysfor everyone! Matt also won the last season of “Celebrity Apprentice” with Arnold Schwarzenegger, which really did not get its due because of some issues with the previous host of the show. Dr. Cynthia Shelby-Lane saved many lives as an ER doctor in a level one trauma center in Detroit over twenty years. She has since pivoted and pivoted and pivoted. She is constantly reinventing herself. She is currently practicing anti-aging medicine and is board certified in anti-aging, functional and integrative medicine. (Yes, please.) She is also a stand up comedian and has been performing in Detroit and around the US for the past 15 years. She combines the two by educating audiences on the health benefits of laughter and humour and is certified in Laughter Wellness and Positive Psychology.

Dr Greg Bishop is a veterinarian and cartoonist. He graduated from UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine at the peak of the median curve in 2013, but Greg is anything but average. Greg endured a small animal rotating internship in the New York area, complete with old-school verbally abusive surgeon, and soul-crushing hours and workload.  This horrific experience made Greg decide to be a person after his internship. He is a husband, dad and dog dad in Portland, Oregon. Greg now works as a relief veterinarian in primary care and emergency practice. He is also a teacher at a technical college and a creative. Greg has illustrated eight children's books (working on the ninth) and is currently writing a graphic novel about veterinary medicine. He has a monthly cartoon featured in Veterinary Practice News, and recently started submitting cartoons to the New Yorker. We talk about veterinary medicine, jokes, cartoons, rejection, mentorship and whether it is better to be a crayon or a pencil.

On today’s episode we talk to our first paramedic! Brad Pittman has been a paramedic and stand up comedian for 34 years. He works the nightshift as a paramedic outside of Atlanta. Guys, Brad has seen some sh*t. Maybe you think your job is stressful, but do you wear a bullet proof vest to work? Do you? Well Brad does. Brad also had a stroke 8 years ago while at work. This is terrible, but if you are going to have a stroke, having one in an ambulance with another paramedic is a close second to having one in the hospital. Brad’s stroke left him with an intermittent stutter which he has had to work through on stage. Brad is also a Youtuber with some super fun characters that he has cooked up, and a podcaster. His podcast is called Smoked Meat, named after his love of meat! And his meat-related hobbies that helped him get through some tough times. Getting to know Brad was super fun! I’m glad he is out there! Thanks Brad.
