NOTE: I was mistaken about the book of the prophet Zephaniah containing evidence of intercessory prayer for the dead. A scholar I was reading had pointed out that the Jewish faith held that it was possible to intercede for those in the netherworld awaiting judgment, referencing 2 Maccabees 12:44-45 and the APOCALYPSE OF ZEPHANIAH 11:1-2, a book attributed to the prophet Zephaniah, but not part of the canon of scripture.
