Have you ever struggled to understand what it actually means to "walk in the Spirit"? The difference between Spirit-led living and flesh-driven behavior isn't just theological jargon—it's the fundamental choice that determines our spiritual trajectory.
Drawing from Galatians 5, we explore the stark contrast between the works of the flesh (adultery, hatred, jealousy) and the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace). This isn't about occasional stumbles but about the consistent pattern of your life. When Paul warns that those practicing works of the flesh "will not inherit the kingdom of God," he's delivering a sobering wake-up call about eternal consequences.
Your speech provides one of the clearest windows into your spiritual condition. As Jesus taught, "Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks." If your vocabulary is peppered with profanity or gossip, it reveals what's filling your heart. The transformation begins not with behavior modification but with heart renovation through scripture meditation and mindful consumption of media.
Walking in the Spirit doesn't happen by accident—it requires intentionally setting your mind on things above. Through Ephesians, Colossians, and Philippians, we discover practical steps for renewing your mind and cultivating self-control. The beautiful promise is that this Spirit-led path leads to God's peace, while flesh-driven living inevitably produces chaos.

I'm glad you decided to join me today . Let's get started , hello , welcome to episode 40 . In this episode , we are going to learn about walking in the Spirit and not in the flesh . And what does that even look like for someone who is committed to Christ ? Now let's dive in .
Speaker 1I always like to start with the scripture , so let's open up our Bibles to Galatians , chapter 5 , verses 16 through 26 . So in Galatians , chapter 5 , verse 16 , it reads I say then walk in the spirit and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh , for the flesh lust against the spirit and the spirit against the flesh , and these are contrary to one another , so that you do not do things that you wish . But if you are led by the Spirit , you are not under the law . So right here in this section , it's telling you the difference between the flesh and the Spirit , that they are different from each other . And it says here at the very beginning when you walk in the Spirit , then you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh . It's either one or the other . And so , with these next two paragraphs that I'm going to read , the first one is going to talk about and teach us about the works of the flesh and the characteristics and the traits that you see with someone who walks in the flesh , and then , after that , we will see the characteristics of walking in the spirit , which are the fruit of the spirit . So let's go on down to verse 19 . Now the works of the flesh
] Fruit of the Spirit
Speaker 1are evident , which are adultery , fornication , uncleanness , lewdness , idolatry , sorcery , hatred , contentions , jealousies , but anything similar . Because it says here and the like of which I tell you beforehand , just as I also told you in time past , that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God . These are works of the flesh , so none of these things . They don't glorify God , they don't honor him , they don't represent him , and so it says here that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God . What does that even mean ? That means that the people who practice these things , they will not inherit the kingdom of God . What does that even mean ? That means that the people who practice these things , they will not go to heaven . Because you're not walking in the spirit , you're doing what you want when you want , because you feel like it . That's what the flesh is .
Speaker 1Now let's look at the fruit of the spirit . You're going to see that it's the complete opposite of the flesh . But when you're looking at this and you're reading this , don't say well , that's me , I'm just so horrible , I'm a lost cause , I'm just going to go to hell . Don't think like that , because if you think like that , then you're just going to keep living the way that you're living . Instead
] Walking as Children of Light
Speaker 1, recognize the areas where you need to get better in . Ask God for that help , ask God for that healing so you can get past that , so you can grow , so you can learn , so you can heal . Repent of that , and let's go to verse 22 .
Speaker 1Now so , in place of that of the works of the flesh , what do we need ? It's the fruit of the Spirit . What is that so ? In verse 22 , it tells us . But the fruit of the spirit is love , joy , peace , long-suffering , kindness , goodness , faithfulness , gentleness , self-control . Against such , there is no law . And I want to make a point right here One of the fruits of the spirit is self-control . With the works of the flesh , there is no self-control . It's doing what you want whenever you want , and then the works of the flesh jealousies to be jealous . But what is the fruit of the Spirit ? To be kind , to be gentle , to be good .
Speaker 1Do you see the difference ? And verse 24 , and those who are Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires . You want to walk in the fruit of the Spirit . It doesn't mean that you never walked in the works of the flesh . Maybe at one point you did . But we put those passions and we put those desires aside . It says that we've crucified them , crucified the flesh , and so then you're able to walk in the fruit of the Spirit . Verse 25 , if we live in the Spirit , let us also walk in the Spirit . Let us not become conceited , provoking one another , envying one another . So you see there the difference between the works of the flesh and walking in the Spirit . They're two totally different things . One honors God , which , when we have the fruit of the Spirit , and the other one does not . One of them gets you closer to God , you're going to heaven , and the other does not .
Speaker 1Okay , let's look further . Let's go on to Ephesians , chapter 5 . So in Ephesians , chapter 5 , verses 8-20 , for you were once darkness , but now you are light in the Lord . Walk as children of light , for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness , righteousness and truth . And that's what we just read Finding out what is acceptable to the Lord . So it's saying now , walk in the light . How do we do this ? You were once darkness , but you're not doing that anymore . So what you're going to do is find out what is acceptable to the Lord , find out what is pleasing to the Lord . And how do you do that ? You read the word of God , you meditate on the word of God , you attend church so it says in verse 11 , and have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness , but rather expose them , for it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret . But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light , for whatever makes manifest is light . Therefore , he says Awake , you who sleep , arise from the dead , and Christ will give you light . Let's keep going .
Speaker 1Now verse 15 . See , then , that you walk circumspectly , not as fools , but as wise . If you notice , here God's given his children instruction on how to act , on how to follow in his ways . So he says be wise , don't walk as a fool , redeeming the time , because the days are evil . Therefore , do not be unwise , but understand what the will of the Lord is . What does he want you to do , what does he want you to commit to ? And do not be drunk with wine in which is dissipation , but be filled with the Spirit , speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs , singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord , giving thanks always for all things to God , the Father , in the name of our Lord
] Renewing Your Mind
Speaker 1Jesus Christ , submitting to one another in the fear of God . And so when you see here where it says the fear of God , that doesn't mean to be scared of God , that means to have a reverence and an honor towards God .
Speaker 1Let's go on over to our next verse in Ephesians , chapter 4 , verses 29 through 32 . So verse 29 . And so these instructions that were given right here is how to walk in the spirit . So this is another instruction , verse 29 , let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth . You know you have people say well , I can say whatever I want , I can do whatever I want . Yeah , you can , but that's not walking in the spirit . He says let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth . But what is good for necessary edification , that it may impart grace to the hearers . He says so it's telling us this is what you need to get rid of . If you have any of this , you need to get rid of it , because it's telling us this is what you need to get rid of . If you have any of this , you need to get rid of it because it's not good for you . It doesn't help you to walk in the spirit Verse 32, .
Speaker 1And be kind to one another . Remember that's the fruit of the spirit Tenderhearted forgiving one another , even as God in Christ forgave you . Forgiveness is something that we need to do as well . It's when you make a decision that you want to walk in the Spirit or follow the ways of God . Then it gives you this instruction of what you need to do . When we read the Word of God and we open it , then we realize wait a minute , I actually do that and I thought that was
] Closing Prayer and Invitation
Speaker 1okay , or I really need help with that . And so this is when we ask God to help us with those things in our life . Maybe it's bitterness , maybe it's anger , evil speaking . We are allowing him to smooth these areas in our life and we're getting closer to walk in the spirit better . Let's keep learning about this . Let's turn on over to our Bibles , to Colossians , chapter 3 . Okay , now I'm going to read Colossians , chapter 3 , 1 through 11 .
Speaker 1If then you were raised with Christ , seek those things which are above , where Christ is sitting at the right hand of God . Verse 2 , what are you thinking about ? Are you complaining a lot ? Are you acting just like everybody else ? God is saying set your mind on higher things , concentrate on me , for you died and your life is hidden with Christ and God . When Christ , who is our life , appears , then you also will appear with him in glory . Therefore , put to death your members which are on the earth .
Speaker 1Fornication , uncleanness , passion , evil , desire and covetousness , which is idolatry . Because of these things , the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them . So again he's telling us these are the works of the flesh , right here in this section , and he's telling us to get rid of them Verse 8, . But now you yourselves are to put off all these . And now he's given us more things . He says anger , wrath , malice , which was covered in the other verses that we read a second ago .
Speaker 1Blasphemy , filthy language out of your mouth . That one right there . Filthy language out of your mouth . There's a scripture in Proverbs where it says out of the abundance of the heart , the mouth speaks . Whatever you have in your heart , it's going to come out . So if there's a lot of curse words or talking about someone gossiping , you have all of that in your heart . So you need the word of God in your heart . What are you listening to that is making you curse so much ? Are you around people who curse a lot ? Do you watch movies where they curse a lot and they have just vile language ? And even if there's not any cursing , how are they speaking about people ? Because people can speak about each other and it doesn't sound good . It gives you an ugly feeling in your stomach . You don't want to do that . You want to glorify God with your words .
Speaker 1And then in verse 9 , it reads do not lie to one another , since you have put off the old man with his deeds and have put on the new man , who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of him who created him . So it says here when you accepted Jesus into your life , you are now a new man , you are now a new creature . You are made in the image of God . So now he's telling us there's things that we need to get rid of . Put them to the side , and now we walk in the spirit .
Speaker 1Now let's head on over to Philippians , chapter 4 . And on the cursing or that filthy language , if it doesn't bother you , then you need more of the word , because you should come to a point where , if it does start to come out of your mouth like it doesn't feel good , you don't like it , it's like if you just ate a piece of trash . It should be that disgraceful to you whenever you utter a word that doesn't honor God , that doesn't line up with the Bible . And when it begins to feel like that , then you know that you have more of the word in you , because that's what it means to walk in the Spirit . I walk in the Spirit and not of the flesh . So Philippians , chapter 4 , verses 8 and 9 .
Speaker 1Finally , brethren , whatever things are true , whatever things are noble , whatever things are just , whatever things are pure , whatever things are lovely , whatever things are of good report , if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy , meditate on these things . So he's telling us . These are the things that I want you to meditate on . These are things that help you to walk in the spirit . The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me . These do , and the God of peace will be with you . That's another thing . Right here , when you walk in the spirit and you concentrate and meditate on these things here it says that the God of peace will be with you . When you are walking in the flesh , doing the works of the flesh , there is no peace , there's no joy , there's unforgiveness , there's no happiness . But when you walk in God's way and you have the fruit of the spirit , god's peace will be with you and will guide you .
Speaker 1So our last scripture let's go to Joshua 1.8 . So it reads this book of law shall not depart from your mouth , but you shall meditate in it day and night . So what does it say about the book of law , the Bible ? We need to read it every day , but not just to read it . You let it soak in . You read that scripture . We need to do it day and night , that you may observe , to do according to all that is written in it , for then you will make your way prosperous and then you will have good success .
Speaker 1So in each of these scriptures that I read today , god was teaching us and showing us how to walk in the spirit . When we walk in the spirit , it gets us closer to him . We have his love , we have his joy and he's guiding us every step of the way , and we have his peace . And if there's any area where you need help in , you need God's help in ask him to help you and he will . So what I would recommend for you today is to read these scriptures , meditate on these scriptures and know what it is to walk in the spirit .
