Summer Season Drives Operator Buying

SPEAKER_00

Amusement Trade Summer. One of the aspects of the entry into June is the focus that amusement operators have for the vacation business. Opportunities to ensure they have the best mix of machines and have updated on the appropriate support and prizes. This means a flurry of distributor-based open days, offering a chance to present new hardware to operators and partners that can support the summer sales cycle. One of the longest-running events of this kind is the Park Avenue Open Day, held in West London. Just off Hangar Lane, the venue was once the home to many amusement distributors and manufacturers. Original operations such as Brent Leisure, Seeger, Taito, Namco, and others having initial factory warehouses at this location. Over time, the area has become the preserve of two veteran operations, who around this time each year hold their open house warehouse visit. Electrocoin

offered up their traditional hospitality and a wide open warehouse. Along with a wide selection of new prize and redemption machines, the operation also was host to several third parties, such as Sega Amusement International, SAI, showing their new amusement pieces selected to benefit from association to soccer, and so World Cup Fever. ElectroCoin has a long-established partnership representing Stern pinball products in the region, and this year was a special occasion as Stern marks its 40th anniversary of the Pinball Corporation. The latest pintables were on display, including the new Transformer table alongside Pokemon, and industry legend Gary Stern attended the event in person. Electrocoin has partnered with Operation Retro Arcade Specialist, who supply classic pinball to both home buyers and amusement installations, the company having signed license agreements to present a number of manufacturers' pintables as well as other retro hardware. Part of that retro arcade specialist lineup was Polycade, who they represent in the UK. The US developed wall and slim modular cab, Retro Multicade System. Launched through a Kickstarter and offering a simple multicade offering for home, residential, and amusement, the system had been off the grid in recent months, even after a prominent partnership with Atari for IP. The latest Polycade Sente cab was at the open day, though in consumer rather than commercial configuration, the company more focused on residential deployment. The new system includes swappable controls, modular accessories, and simple reconfiguration into a commercial system, accepting payment. The need for some operators to offer retro entertainment in a reliable package, a major issue. Another long-term electrocoin partner is Konami, the UK distributor, the only current trader with a direct relation with the Japanese factory. The fruits of that relationship were on show at the open day with Dance Dance Revolution Universe, the only officially supported series of the Bomani music game series sold for amusement operation in the West. And from information from well-placed sources, Konami may be pausing original plans for a Western presence in the market, so the DDR release may stay the only official Konami representation. That said, sources reveal that Konami Arcade Games has taken a small booth at the November 1AAPA Expo, West Hall, so we may get a clarification on their stance. The other aspects of the Electrocoin Open House saw the rest of their showroom, including representation, not just from amusement, but also skill with prizes, SWP gaming machine manufacturers, along with amusement services companies such as Intercard and others. The event crowned by their famous company hospitality, including the Greek BBQ. Adjacent

UDC Warehouse Tour And New Kits

SPEAKER_00

to Electrocoin and another veteran of the UK amusement scene is United Distributing Company, UDC, and their warehouse and sales operation. And this time the pink carpet, company colours, was rolled out for attendees. UDC had their usual extensive selection of the latest prize, pushers and grabbers, including an appearance from a lout of their e-Claw 2.0 platform. It was revealed that several units had been installed at a UK holiday resort, operated by Gender Play Nation, part of Gender Europe. Many of those attending the open house came from seaside amusement operations and were keen to look for the latest prize and merch in readiness for the holiday season. The big presence in the video amusement category reflected the partnership representing the Ace Amusement Range by UDC. Representatives of the company had been seen only a matter of weeks earlier at the Chinese AAA 26 event. See previous coverage. Another aspect of the video amusement range represented by UDC is their group of music games. We have covered their representation of the BLEE Dance Stage 120Hz touchscreen rhythm game. Alongside this, the music game and latest updated version of Stepmania X from Step Revolution was on display. The music game genre is still a strong if niche sector. While Electrocoin and UDC have their releases, both SAI and Bandai Namco, Amusement Europe have their own music game titles in this category. Regarding

Stage Tour A New Rhythm Game

the amusement music game sector, several operators and distributors are about to get a big surprise. Rather than the hoped Bimani return to the Western shores, there is news of a brand new entrant into the market. Redoctane Games, a new operation comprising original developers that created the Guitar Hero Rhythm Game Series, first launched in 2005, are coming out of stealth mode with a new music game property called Stage Tour that is also getting initially amusement treatment. A scratch-built four-player cabinet employing a selection of peripherals including an electric guitar-style controller, familiar from the original game, the arcade game seeing a license from famous guitar manufacturer Gibson, as well as other instrument brands. With a new selection of other peripherals, the gameplay employs new elements as well as tournament features. Schedule for a full 2026 release, the game is expected to plan to make a big splash at IAA PA26, though is being beta tested. A few Scratch-built cabinets marked their first appearances at selected events, such as the IGN Live 2026 player event in Los Angeles during June. Obviously, the developers are being incredibly protective regarding the release of this new title, this new consumer music game currently using the Scratch-built cabinets as demonstrators, those sources speak of tentative interest for an appropriate amusement rollout based on reaction. This hesitancy is understandable, especially considering what happened to the last time that an original rhythm game was launched into the Western market. Activision partnering with Raw Thrills to release Guitar Hero Arcade in 2009, being well received by players and initially by operators with Bets and Enterprises claiming 2,000 units sold in the first three months, the machine suffered from music licensing issues associated with ASCAP, with some operators receiving claims over copyright. A situation that was never adequately explained, especially as a seemingly popular machine was suddenly suspended from sale. Obviously, there will be high expectations for this new release, and we will bring the latest details when they are available. In

conclusion, we would like to thank the hospitality of both Electrocoin and UDC for an informative, if not wet, gathering. A surprise rainy open day that has not been seen in many years. The event, as always, proved informative on the state of the industry, with the opportunity to speak face to face with contacts in the sector and hear developments from the horse's mouth in a relaxed environment. The big development was the increased pace of business, countered by the squeeze of finance from global and industry directions. Economic conditions are changing audience habits and refocusing spending. Disposable income, looking at staytainment, a term coined by LBX Collective slash sound off, seeing less international vacation travel and a focus of entertainment closer to home. We will be watching the summer holiday numbers with interest. Can this continue? For many new executives to the modern amusement scene in the UK, the value of a group of factory open days was lost on them, while others made a beeline to attend the open house and not just for the free ice cream and BBQ. Seeing the obvious value of the face-to-face activity between buyers and sellers, distributors and operators, having an intrinsic value way beyond the size of the gathering, and is seen by many as one of the most valuable social events of the amusement trade calendar in the UK. Representatives from BACTA, UK Trade Association, swarmed the event, partly in response to the impending governmental white paper threatened to be released that could see a root and branch restructuring of the UK legislation on casino, amusement, and SWP machine operation, gauging membership concerns. For others, this was a vital sales opportunity before the summer season, a season that is expected to be marked by the statetainment economic atmosphere. Those that thought this was an unimportant archaic gathering would regret their words, and from this year's response, even with the vagaries of the UK weather, it looks that Open Day will continue for another few decades.

Universal United Kingdom Resort Revealed

SPEAKER_00

New theme park. While the electrocoin Greek BBQ was in full swing, some of us had to hot foot it towards central London for the big reveal of the day. The UK government, in collaboration with Universal, made the official naming announcement on Universal United Kingdom Resort, the new 500-acre theme park site that broke ground in Bedfordshire. Along with the official name, a 2031 date was confirmed for the schedule opening. The NBC Comcast-owned operation, confirming a $5 billion development investment alongside the UK government's £1.3 billion expected in the project, with hoped infrastructure projects in support of the venue that is expected to bring 2,800 jobs to the area. Placing this into comparison, over £5 billion, $7 billion, had been spent by Universal in the Epic Universe £750-acre expansion to their Orlando park. And we need to be clear, the UK plan numbers are for the Phase 1 development, with expansion in mind. No word on the movie IP to be included, or attractions for the new Universal United Kingdom. This announcement marking the starting gun for one of the largest modern theme park projects in Europe and will be under much scrutiny towards the advancements and innovation Universal will bring to this first theme, park resort, of the 2030s. But what will be the inevitable impact this new entertainment destination will have on the region's, let alone countries, entertainment business? Operations such as Merlin Entertainment clearly seeing this as a major threat to their status in the sector and have started to restructure accordingly.

IAAPA London And A Crowded 2027

SPEAKER_00

Tale of London shows, and finally, while Open Day is an important distributor meet, the UK's position as a crucible for social entertainment could be accelerated by geopolitical conditions and the vagaries of timing. This year we'll see the IAAPA Expo, Europe Amusement, Attraction and Entertainment Expo, take place in London at the Excel Convention Center during September 21st to 24th. For many, this event will represent one of the key sales and research opportunities for the year. A level of importance as many UK, European, UAE, and Asian executives evaluate current global conditions and cancel plans to attend the American IAAPA Orlando event in November. The spiraling price of airline tickets, local hotel price gouging, and shipping costs, geopolitical positioning, especially for UK and EU corporations. All this and the confused pricing and positioning of the new North vs. West Hall layout proposed by the IAAPA Orlando organizational team have created a bonfire of conditions, where the IAAPA, London gathering representing Europe, Middle East, and Africa, EMEA regions could usurp the North American event. At the time of writing this, the confused situation over the North West split of the OCCC exhibition venue in Orlando was still smoldering. Key sponsors waiting to know where their allotted booth spaces would be, either within the new edition of the West Hall or their previous North Hall placement. One longtime exhibitor and silver sponsor of IAAPA stated off the record that their pulling the trigger on exhibiting at the North American Trade Event this year depended on which hall they had been allocated. Concerns regarding travel time between the two zones, even with proposed free laid-on coaching, appropriate attendee information slash signage, and just a feeling of separation from the main show, fueling concern, some executives nicknaming the IAAPA West Hall as the Doldrums. IAAPA placing themselves in a difficult position with this move, still licking their wounds after the postponement of the inaugural IAAPA, Middle East Expo, and resulting financial hit. But there are greater impacts shaping the UK trade scene looking towards 2027. The spiritual home of the term London Show has been held by the January Amusement Trade Exhibition International, rebranded the Entertainment Attractions and Gaming Expo, EAG. The show has gone through a metamorphosis now comprising three shows in one, including the Social Immersive Entertainment Expo and London Casino and Gaming Show, having scaled back much of its European and international aspirations for a more focused UK-centric attendance. With this, the show was dealt a new threat to exhibitors and attendance with the news of a competitor international amusement, attraction, and immersion show. Following the handoff of the Dubai Entertainment Attraction and Leisure Deal Expo to New Operators GL exhibitions, it was revealed in April that the new owners have totally rebranded and refocused the event under the new brand Entertainment and Leisure MENA, ENL 27. This reposition sees a return to a January fixture, taking place on the 12th to 14, 2027, at the Dubai World Trade Center Exhibition Center. These dates, however, are the same days announced by EAG 27. This seems an unusual situation to become a direct competitor to the international attendees and exhibitors, who will see the MENA market, both Middle East and Indian aspects, covered by the ENL 27 event, as important, especially with the repositioning of the inaugural IAAP, a Middle East trade event in Saudi Arabia, now a few months later, April 12 to 15th, this will now be an incredibly confusing series of events, especially if the Middle East conflict is still erupting in the region. All this adding to the condensed 2027 convention landscape, squeezed budgets, squeezed calendar, and growing impatience with trade direction.
