Written over 700 years before the birth of Jesus, Isaiah 53 contains one of the most remarkable prophetic declarations in all of Scripture. In the midst of Judah's exile, moral decay, and spiritual wandering, the prophet Isaiah speaks of a coming Suffering Servant — one who would carry the pain, guilt, and sin of the people not as punishment for His own wrongdoing, but out of a deep and sacrificial act of love.

Verse 4 tells us that this servant took up our pain and bore our suffering. Verse 5 reveals why: he was pierced for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities — so that we could receive peace and healing. The Hebrew word for peace here is shalom — not simply the absence of conflict, but wholeness, well-being, and a restored relationship with God.

This is the heart of Good Friday. We all carry burdens — guilt, shame, and unanswered suffering. But Isaiah points us to a God who does not stand at a distance from our pain. In Jesus Christ, the Suffering Servant, God absorbs the full weight of our sin so that we don't have to.

Good Friday is good because the penalty has already been paid. Christ bore it all.
