about a time in my life in 2020 in March of about March 1st of 2020. 00:02:13.360 --> 00:02:24.080 I went to the doctor because I had a lump growing on the side of my neck, and and uh when it you can feel it and see it, you start to think, I don't need a doctor to tell me I'm in a mess. 00:02:24.319 --> 00:02:31.919 And I remember going to the doctor, and the doctor said, Yeah, you have a tumor on your neck, it's a there's a mass in there, and we need to remove it. 00:02:32.159 --> 00:02:34.159 And um, he gave me some news. 00:02:34.240 --> 00:02:38.159 He said, It's actually wrapped itself around your vocal cords. 00:02:38.400 --> 00:02:41.439 And I don't know about you, but I kind of speak with my life. 00:02:41.520 --> 00:02:47.919 That's kind of what I and I remember feeling in that moment like, how are we ever gonna overcome this? 00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:49.439 And he began to explain it to me. 00:02:49.520 --> 00:02:51.599 He said, Uh it's easy, no big deal. 00:02:51.759 --> 00:02:53.840 I said, easy, no big deal. 00:02:53.919 --> 00:03:01.599 I mean, he said, I'm just gonna lift up your vocal cords and I'm gonna unwrap it from it, and then I'll put them all back together. 00:03:01.840 --> 00:03:12.639 That's easy for him, but for me, and about 10 days later, the world shut down to COVID, and that surgery that was priority was now no longer a priority. 00:03:12.879 --> 00:03:18.080 So I remember sitting in my house thinking thoughts in my head, I know you've never thought thoughts like this. 00:03:18.319 --> 00:03:29.199 I mean, God, I trust you, but God, I know you're a healer, but and I had a lot of reservation in my heart. 00:03:29.439 --> 00:03:36.319 How many of you know in that moment, I I'm well, right now I'm so thankful for a surgeon who was able to remove it. 00:03:36.400 --> 00:03:39.199 I'm I'm thankful that nothing was scarred or damaged. 00:03:39.360 --> 00:03:41.599 And here's what I realized in that process. 00:03:41.759 --> 00:03:43.280 I'm thankful for his skilled hands. 00:03:43.360 --> 00:03:47.199 Y'all, my hands shake, and it's not because I'm nervous up here, they just shake all the time. 00:03:47.360 --> 00:03:51.840 I don't want my shaky hands performing a surgery on myself. 00:03:52.159 --> 00:03:56.800 What I realized in this process, and as we talked this morning, is I think it's a lot like that. 00:03:57.039 --> 00:04:04.400 Because I didn't just need the surgeon to deal with my past medical issues, I didn't need him to just deal with my present medical issues. 00:04:04.560 --> 00:04:08.400 How many of you know it also impacted my future? 00:04:08.879 --> 00:04:17.680 And that's the thing about messes, is oftentimes we know our messes affected our past, and sometimes we carry our messes into our present. 00:04:17.839 --> 00:04:28.000 But how many of you know that the thoughts of what we had done and the things that had happened to us and the mistakes that we made, they can travel with us well into the future. 00:04:28.480 --> 00:04:36.959 That's why you can have had an experience 50 years ago, but still be living today as if you had made that mistake just yesterday. 00:04:37.360 --> 00:04:42.560 So this morning, I I've titled the message The Power of Restoration. 00:04:43.279 --> 00:04:45.439 I couldn't perform surgery on myself. 00:04:45.600 --> 00:04:49.680 I needed somebody who had a skilled hand to do what I could not do. 00:04:50.160 --> 00:04:53.360 And the power of this morning's message is the same. 00:04:53.600 --> 00:05:10.959 That when you find yourself in the middle of a mess, when you've made mistakes, when you've failed, when you've sinned, when when you have things in your life that need cleaned up, the truth of it all starts this morning with Psalm 51, and that is that you can't get out of it by yourself. 00:05:11.920 --> 00:05:20.720 The trap of sin is to get you to buy into or believe the lie that you can handle it yourself. 00:05:21.199 --> 00:05:26.000 Now, listen, I I know, yeah, some of you men are like, I can I can build a house, I can fix things. 00:05:26.560 --> 00:05:38.399 And so sometimes the mentality when we get to this is so hard to overcome because we're so used to trying to solve our own problems, fixing our own mistakes. 00:05:38.560 --> 00:05:43.360 I want to read Psalm 51 to you this morning because I believe it is the answer. 00:05:43.519 --> 00:05:53.360 I believe it is God's word of encouragement to us that it's not a matter of if you're gonna find yourself messing up, it's a matter of what will you do when you do. 00:05:53.600 --> 00:05:56.240 Psalm 51, verse 1 through 17. 00:05:56.399 --> 00:05:58.800 Here's what David, the psalmist, the writer, says. 00:05:59.040 --> 00:06:01.920 He says, Have mercy on me, O God. 00:06:02.639 --> 00:06:14.319 According to your steadfast love, according to your abundant mercy, blot out my transgressions, wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. 00:06:14.720 --> 00:06:19.199 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. 00:06:19.439 --> 00:06:23.519 Have you ever played your mistakes on a rerun in your 00:06:54.399 Against you and you only, verse 4, he says, Have I sinned and I've done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. 00:06:54.560 church. 00:09:59.759 --> 00:10:01.120 I'm up here all the time. 00:10:01.200 --> 00:10:09.120 And I can take for granted the very thing those who just remembered their deliverance are so willing to sacrifices before the Lord. 00:10:34.799 --> 00:10:39.759 And what David's saying is it's not that those don't matter at all, and throw the baby out with the bathwater. 00:10:39.840 --> 00:10:48.000 help you catch up to what we're talking about this morning. 00:13:12.559 --> 00:13:20.399 But David, when he was supposed to be out at war, most people, most theologians would say David's first mistake was he should have been at war instead of at home. 00:13:20.559 --> 00:13:24.480 He sent out his men, he didn't go with them to battle, and he stayed home. 00:13:24.559 --> 00:13:28.000 And when he got bored, he saw a pretty woman on the rooftop over there. 00:13:28.159 --> 00:13:31.279 He invited her over, and next thing you know, they're having a baby. 00:13:31.519 --> 00:13:33.759 And David's thinking, oh no. 00:13:34.000 --> 00:13:34.799 What do I do now? 00:13:34.879 --> 00:13:36.879 Have you ever been in a situation like, how did I get here? 00:13:37.039 --> 00:13:37.600 Oh no. 00:13:37.840 --> 00:13:38.720 What do I do now? 00:13:38.879 --> 00:13:44.320 He asked the same question we all ask when we make mistakes, and that is, what do I do next? 00:13:44.480 --> 00:13:50.960 The problem is not that we made the mistake, often the problem is that we now make another mistake because of the first mistake that we made. 00:13:51.200 --> 00:13:58.720 We counsel people all the time, and as we talk with them, we say, hey, listen, listen, one bad choice is not permission to have a series of bad choices. 00:13:58.960 --> 00:14:04.799 In other words, just because you heard wrong or got it wrong or didn't step in the right direction doesn't mean you should keep going in that direction. 00:14:04.879 --> 00:14:06.480 Well, I guess I'm already here, I gotta keep going. understand with his story is he's a lot like us. 00:14:14.080 --> 00:14:15.600 And he had a response to make. 00:14:15.679 --> 00:14:18.960 And how many of you know he tried to cover his tracks? 00:14:19.440 --> 00:14:22.480 And so after they're gonna have a baby, and he thinks, what am I gonna do? 00:14:22.639 --> 00:14:24.320 And so David does the best he can do. 00:14:24.399 --> 00:14:26.080 He comes up with his best bride idea. 00:14:26.240 --> 00:14:28.879 How about I just pull her husband Uriah off the battlefield? 00:14:29.039 --> 00:14:30.320 I am the king after all. 00:14:30.480 --> 00:14:36.639 And and as her husband Uriah comes home and he says, Hey, I'm just thinking, if he'll go home for the weekend, it'll all be good. 00:14:36.720 --> 00:14:39.759 They'll be having a baby in nine months and nobody will ever even know. 00:14:40.559 --> 00:14:43.600 Uriah was a man of integrity. 00:14:44.080 --> 00:14:49.519 Uriah was a man of upright heart, and he said, No, no, listen, all my men are out fighting at war in battle. 00:14:49.600 --> 00:14:52.879 I will not go home and enjoy myself while they're out there fighting. 00:14:52.960 --> 00:14:56.320 And so Uriah decides to sleep outside the palace, and Uriah doesn't go home. 00:14:56.480 --> 00:14:58.159 And David thinks, what am I gonna do now? 00:14:58.399 --> 00:15:03.440 So Uriah gets invited by King David over to his palace for a nice buffet dinner. 00:15:03.759 --> 00:15:06.399 All the wine he could drink, and David thinks this will solve the problem. 00:15:06.480 --> 00:15:09.759 Now he's 00:15:16.480 Have you ever been so far in a pit? 00:15:16.639 --> 00:15:18.879 You feel like the only way to go is to keep going? 00:15:19.840 --> 00:15:21.519 So David makes this decision. 00:15:21.759 --> 00:15:28.960 He writes a letter and signs it with the king's stamp and seals it and sends it off to his commander, Joab, in the hands of Uriah. 00:15:29.519 --> 00:15:33.360 Uriah delivered his own death sentence to his commander. 00:15:33.759 --> 00:15:39.600 King David said, Hey, listen, I want you to put Uriah out in the front of the battle, and when in the heat of the battle, here's what I want you to do. 00:15:39.679 --> 00:15:43.759 I want you to call the armies off and call them back and leave Uriah out in the middle. 00:15:44.080 --> 00:15:48.960 And King and Joab, the commander of the army, did just that, and Uriah died in battle that day. 00:15:49.039 --> 00:15:55.919 In other words, David's sin led to more sin, and that sin was having a man killed who But I just want you to know that David messed it up big. 00:16:19.919 --> 00:16:25.600 Anybody in your life ever feel like if I'm gonna mess it up, I just somehow, somehow, I always mess it up big. Repentance is I'm walking in this direction. 00:26:20.079 --> 00:26:25.599 And it's not that I just feel bad, it's that I make the decision, I'm gonna turn around and go the other way. 00:26:26.000 --> 00:26:27.200 And here's what David did. 00:26:27.440 --> 00:26:35.519 David was going this way, saying, I'm gonna do whatever I can to cover this mess, and he had to make the conscious decision,
