We explore childhood memories of our elementary school club "The Midnight Players" and share essential advice for new therapists struggling with performance anxiety in clinical sessions.

• Our childhood club "Midnight Players" had airbrushed sweaters, monthly dues, and official roles including a "Sergeant-at-Arms"
• Childhood clubs reveal our deep desire for belonging and community-building from an early age
• Creating a supportive environment at sports tournaments shows how community forms around shared experiences
• Three essential principles for new therapists: Be Slow, Be Lazy, Be Dumb
• Being slow means creating spaciousness in therapy and resisting the urge to rush through client stories
• Being lazy means trusting the therapeutic process rather than forcing predetermined interventions
• Being "dumb" in session (while smart outside session) means approaching clients with genuine curiosity instead of presumed understanding
• New therapists often try too hard to analyze clients rather than being present in the relationship
• The golf lesson analogy: sometimes simpler approaches yield better results than technical overanalysis

Welcome Back to the Cast

Speaker 1

Hey man , welcome back , welcome back to the cast . We are continuing the streak of consistency . It feels like it's been appreciated . Yeah , I mean , uh , listenership has gone up . Listenership , yes , and the word the people who listen to the cast , you know , like , like a relationship , but like a listenership , yeah , the , yes , the listener ship . Yes , I'm sure there's a better word . Uh , I don't know the . You know the . Your fan club , um , I don't know . Apparently you got students showing up to your classroom with uh , t-shirts that say the airbrush t-shirts from the 90s that say you know , dr Austin's biggest fan . That's what I hear ,

Midnight Players: Elementary School Club

Speaker 1

you know . So , jeez , man , jeez , can I help it that my students love me ?

Speaker 1

Hmm , is it , is it ? Is it a crime ? Is it a crime to have an impact on people's lives ? Is it is it ? Is it now uncouth , you know , to inspire people , and so what if they wear , you know , whatever they need to wear to show that ? You know , to me that's fine . I receive that , you know , and it's part of my openness , jews , that allows this relationship to blossom . Some would say , some would say bloom , you know , and so I'm cutting all this out . I'm cutting . No , they , they do airbrush Jews , and it's not only the T-shirts that they airbrush , it's the hearts , yeah , so are you airbrushing hearts out there ?

Speaker 1

Yeah , what mall they go to to get the airbrush ? You know , right next to Aladdin's castle . Next to Aladdin's castle , if you know . You know , in the Nugget mall , aladdin's castle , the airbrush . You walk right into Nugget mall . Right , nugget Mall , latin's classic , the airbrush . You walk right into Nugget Mall , uh-huh , from the front , turn to the right , go around the corner , right next to the Centennial Wireless Store , airbrush , right , man , me and Judas used to be , but we probably opened up a little hole in the ozone layer behind all the stuff we were getting airbrushed , yeah , everything , yeah , up a little hole in the ozone layer behind all the stuff we were getting airbrushed Everything . Sweaters , t-shirts , shoes , license plates , soccer bags . Man , what you want on it , what you want on it , can you put midnight players on it In silver ? No , no , no . And then make like a car and then put some like paint splatters on it , like , can you do ? Like , can you do the ? The black power rangers helmet on it ? Can you put the ? Uh , can you ? No , you know what I want the green rangers sword . I want that on the side . But , uh .

Speaker 1

But we probably walked in the school and those teachers was like I know you lying to me , if y'all fucking , if you fucking with another airbrush , this is the most embarrassing thing . This is the most , this is the most embarrassing thing . Dog , you remember in elementary school where it was me , you and a couple of our knucklehead friends , yeah , that that had that idea that , hey , we need to , we need to , we need to make our own club , we need to make a club . It's a boys club , like forever , yeah , like forever , forever . We're gonna be in this forever , ever so , which I think the name should be , which I think you know .

Speaker 1

We tossed around a couple of names , but the names that stuck was the Midnight Players . Midnight Players , man , man , what were we like ? Eight years old , seven , seven or eight years old , and and me , and you went , cause you know our , our parents , you know they Parents , you know they come up with real . And so we went to our parents , man to mom , and was like mom , mom , listen , for Christmas , this is Christmas . Now we're talking about , we're talking . This is Christmas . You can't , because you can't , say no , because it's real , it's Christmas . We're talking about charity . You know what I mean , now , listen , this is is gonna sound crazy at first , but we need about seven , seven , eleven sweaters , sweaters , now sweaters , high quality , high quality , not hoodies , because we got some stuff we want to put on the back .

Speaker 1

Now we're thinking , we're thinking midnight blue , midnight blue because it's school appropriate midnight because we can only wear blue , we can only wear navy blue

Airbrushed T-shirts and Childhood Memories

Speaker 1

sweaters and and , and I need you to name to airbrush midnight players . Yeah , now , midnight players . Okay , make sure you spell it all , right , not play us players , midnight players . And you could do a little razzle dazzle . You know how they used to do the little airbrush star , the little star . Yeah , do a little razzle dazzle . Hey , man , do a little razzle dazzle , make it look all nice , you know , and we're going to have names . I want you to put the names on the back of it , okay , so let me give you a list of all the Midnight Players . Okay , yeah , the list was everything , dog , the list of the Midnight Players . We didn't wait until we combed through it .

Speaker 1

Now , listen , we told our friends in September we were going to do this in December and so , look , you got from September to December to prove to us that you belong to the midnight playing material ? I don't know Midnight playing material or not , I don't know . Yeah , what's your GPA looking like ? What's your service looking like ? What's your extracurriculars looking like ? How often do you serve the community ? Yeah , what's your extracurriculars . And what church do you go to ? Matter of fact , yeah , man . Hey , bro , you know what's your mean household income ? Yeah , what is you know ? Let me get some tax returns . Can we trust you to tithe ? Can we trust you to pay your dues ? Do you have a voter registration card ? Yeah , man , and we're also going to need the transcripts from previous institutions .

Speaker 1

Was your parents Democrat or Republican ? Now , listen , like we want to know , listen , midnight players want their money . So the dues are going to be $4,000 . I know it's steep . No , no , dog , dog , I legitimately think we had them pay $10 a month . Yeah , I'm pretty sure $10 a month . Yeah , pay ten dollars a month ? Yeah , I'm pretty sure ten dollars a month , yeah , and , and legitimately , we would have them pay ten dollars a month , uh , to pay for the , to pay for the sweaters , you know , and then ten dollars a month . And then we would have , like , little parties . Man , yeah , you don't remember that . Sleep homes at the house . Don't sleep at the house we'd have pizza , like we had a secretary .

Speaker 1

We were in first second grade . We had sergeant-at-Arms remember . I remember who was Sergeant-at-Arms man Jerry Pottier . Jerry , yeah , jerry Pottier With the gold tooth . Hey bro , nah , man , first gold tooth I ever saw . I was like this dude here , yeah , like he looks like he can fight somebody . He looked like he can fight somebody . He looked like he was about business , like Sergeant at Arms dude , and it was in the front and it would glean a little bit . You remember , and it had a little design in it . Yeah , remember when Gold Teeth used to have little designs . They still do , yeah , they still do . Amen . Had a couple clients in the clinic with the gold tooth , with the little design in it , with a J , with the design in it , with a J , with a J in the goatee Men , not Players , men , not Players .

Speaker 1

Man . Catholic school yeah , bro , we had these sweaters . Remember we had to tell somebody he couldn't make it . Yeah , tell a couple people , yeah , a couple people , a couple people . Remember , remember , for January , we showed up with those sweaters . Bro , we showed up with our sweaters on . Hey , baby , if you want us on , listen . If we handed him out and we told him . We said what do we call him ? Dog ? We called him . If you didn't make it , we said you're on a trial period or you're an initiate or something . Dog , yeah , before we pat you in , man , before we pat you in , we don't know if you're going to get this cut . Hey , people think we're joking , but me and you , second grade , without any rules , no internet , no pictures of this . Yeah , yeah , yeah , yeah .

Speaker 1

What a time to be alive , man , time to be alive . What a time to be alive . You had to bully people in person , yeah , and you had to have tough conversations . You had to go up to people and say hey , hey , hey , man , hey , it's not your year , big dog . Yeah , it's not you , it's not your year , big dog , it's not your year .

Speaker 1

But listen , because you remember we'd have a sweater without the airbrush , yeah , just a regular blue sweater . And we'd say , look , I can give you this , but you're not a part of the club , which means you can't come to the meetings . We can put midnight on it , but you got to earn that place , you got to earn the plates . And listen , listen , listen , listen . I still need , I still need the dudes . We're going to need that $10 real quick . How are we supposed to buy our Boston baked beans during recess ? How are we supposed ? But dog ? But you remember the biggest thing dog was I think it was for , like our birthday or something we bought .

Speaker 1

We rented a limo to pick us all up from school , take to the bowling alley , take us to the bowling alley . Mama coordinated with all the parents . We did that with the midnight players . Money like y'all tripping , if y'all don't , I don't know what y'all were doing in first and second grade , but we were organizing . We would do little community stuff . You know , what's funny is that sometimes I see them in my players around in the community . You remember there's one dude , andre . He works for the city , the city of Lafayette . He was cutting grass at one of the city parks when I was walking the kids in there and I was like Andre , you know , like yeah , yeah , yeah , you in the midnight plays for life , for life .

Speaker 1

But we do little cleanups , like if you have to clean the , you know , the basement upstairs and the gym , yeah , midnight plays , got it . No , no , no , we'll get the midnight plays . Plays , let's roll out Burt , burt , burt . Y'all don't understand . Y'all don't understand . Let's roll out players . Let's roll out . Our community need us . It's so embarrassing , man , y'all get them sweaters on , bro . So embarrassing , let's go we rolling out at night .

Speaker 1

Seriously , dog , we were in like second , third grade , second , third grade , first , second , first , second and third , third grade , first , second , first , first , second and third . I think . I think we stopped at like sixth Maybe . Yeah , at six . It was like , oh , for four or five years , man , we were in GPA , we would help . I love to find the midnight player sweater , like I love to find a midnight player . I just , I just can't believe , I just can't believe , I just can't believe , I just can't believe .

Speaker 1

Our parents supported this . You know what I mean , supported this . Remember 8 ? 8 . And I don't want to out nobody , but remember that one time we caught one of the midnight players smoking a cigarette . We were like in 5th grade . Oh , I know exactly who you're talking about . Yep , I know exactly who you're talking about .

Speaker 1

And we had to have a . We had to have a little meeting . Yeah , you know , yeah , and you were organizers . Poe , da was sergeant at arms , and we had to have a meeting where we this is a , a , a bruh . This is unbecoming , unbecoming of a . This is unbecoming . Yeah , I , I am not just . I'm not just disgusted , I am disappointed , I'm appalled . And your choices , and how you wouldn't even fathom that your choices wouldn't affect you didn't just smoke , you smoked and you had him smoking . A midnight player was caught smoking Bruh .

Speaker 1

Hey , man , you better tighten up , tighten up , tighten up , tighten up , that's strikeh . Hey man , you better tighten up , tighten

Tournament Preparations and Family Time

Speaker 1

up , tighten up , tighten up , that's strike one . Hey , hey , hey , hey , Take his M , take his M , take his M off the midnight , take his M , cross it out . No , bro , that's crazy , that's crazy man . Hey , take the stars off his sweater . Somebody scrape the stars . I mean , by that time you had been through so many washes . He ain't won nothing . But no hanging sweaters . Man , he ain't been washed so much .

Speaker 1

That's not this 2025 fabric . We're talking 1990s fabric , 1995 , but you remember that's when it was all champion sweaters , that's when champion was cheap . No , it was either champion or Hanes , hanes , one of them who got it from Dallas to Oregon . Yeah , but it was one of those sweaters where you can't tell what's the back or the front . Hey , man , you know you ever put those cheap sweaters on and you're like God , dog , like what's the ? You immediately rip the tag out because it's so itchy , like . I know the tag is in the back , but why ? The back ain't lower than the front ? You put the sweater on the wrong way . You're choking yourself . I got it in the wrong way . You don't even take your . You just . You don't even take your , you just . You don't even take the sweater off , you just take your arms out and you swing it around yourself . Rotate the sweater around .

Speaker 1

Hey , man , if any of the midnight players are listening to this , man , y'all reach out to us . Man , keep your head up . Let's do something in Girard Park . You know what's expected . Let's have a cookout . Yeah , we're going to get a call . We're going to get a call . Yeah , let's have a little kickback or something , bro , you know , yeah , man , anyway , anyway , anyway , all right , man , all right , all right , let's do a little check in , just a brief check in , man , because you know we both got meetings after this , so it was a little brief check in , bro .

Speaker 1

No-transcript , I don't know about you , man , but fall is turning a corner . I got some crisp mornings coming up . I don't know , but it feels like the kids are just like our kids are exhausted man , oh , really , yeah , I don't know what it is . We are too , man . I just I don't know , I can't put my finger on it . Man , maybe it's just because

Be Slow: Therapeutic Advice

Speaker 1

it's the middle of the semester , but it doesn't feel like it . It it's the middle of the semester , but it doesn't feel like it . It's just it's the beginning of the semester . The semester just started , oh no , but we got , like we got midterms . Jeez , oh , that's right , because y'all , y'all in for Thanksgiving . Yeah , yeah , we do . We don't end until , like the second week of December or something . Yeah , that's crazy . Yeah , yeah , yeah , we're in the . So it feels like we haven't covered enough . You know what I mean . But anyway , yeah , that's a quick check-in for us . Man , we're doing good .

Speaker 1

I got that keynote speech on Friday . Man , where is it ? Arkansas ? Yeah , it should be fun . Man , it should be fun . I could talk for about 45 minutes , I think . Where at ? Is it a university ? Yeah , it's Arkansas State . It's for their , their counseling program . Oh , yeah , so they do like a research symposium kind of thing .

Speaker 1

Yeah , let the people know how much they're paying . You , bro , what you getting ? What you getting broke off like that ? I actually don't know . Oh , see how he likes to keep it close to the chest . You see how he likes to keep it close . No , let the people know how much you're getting paid . We all want to know what your pockets are looking like . Let us know . Blink twice if it's over $25,000 . That's a lot of blinks . That's a lot of blinks . Hey , can I borrow $20 ? Yeah , 20 . Yeah , bro , you gotta pay me back , though . Pay you back .

Speaker 1

Yeah , now we , we've been , we've been bro , we went , we had a tournament in band , we had a soccer tournament . Yeah , we brought the whole family this time , man , uh and listen , listen , I'm not playing around man , I set up a whole compound . When it comes to , when it comes to like , tournament play I'm talking tent fan ice chest with apples , oranges , bananas , grapes . We got Gatorade water . We got like little . We got catered water . We got like little , uh , we got uh , uh , the , the little , uh , squeeze it . We got the uh , the , the push , pop , stuff , I'm . We got chairs .

Speaker 1

I mean how much , how much you charge for all of that . But it's right , you know , you know what , you know how much you charge , because I , I know , I know , I know , you know what I love , you know what . You know what dog is that , like , I don't charge nothing for it , right , what happens is all the kids start to gravitate towards our tent , you know , and so all the kids are hanging out . I bring my little iPad . The kids usually watch , like an Arsenal game or whatever team is playing at the time . Right , they get off their feet , they sit down .

Speaker 1

Man , it's like a community type of thing , you know , and so like man , one thing that I realized that , like , right , you , you remember how it was , man , you only get this opportunity to be a part of a team , you know , in like your childhood playing at tournaments , like one time . Do you want that time to be spent baking in the sun , you know , like , do you want like a miserable or just like a miserable tournament experience , you know ? Or do you want like some music playing , you know , maybe some food we had like sandwich stuff , you know , and you want fruit and ice and Florida water , and you know , whatever . You know , that's the type of experience we're trying to have , man , so that's what we do . Yeah , for people who don't know what Florida water is , it's like ammonia water , like water mixed in with that . It's like extra cold . Yeah , you can't drink it . Yeah , don't drink it , you know , but you soak towels in it and then you put it on your face and stuff I cannot tell . It's like , bro , the fountain of youth , the fountain horrible . Oh , it's probably hard . There's probably somebody listening to this podcast that's like , no , yeah , some dermatologist like oh , yeah , that explains everything . That's why the back of your neck look like hamburger . You're putting that floor to water . Yeah , that towel on the back of your neck talking about , I'm hot , I'm trying to cool off . Well , congratulations , it's probably all the , uh , the , the , the iron and paint , and then the , the , yeah , sodium all up in the , the water . Yeah , man , anyway . So , yeah , bro , that's that's , that's us , man , that's us .

Speaker 1

So all right , bro , let's get into like a little topic . Man , I , I had an idea about prac students , about practicum students , and just kind of like maybe some advice for practicum students . But you said you had something too , right , bro ? I don't know about advice , man , but I've been working on this idea with my students right Now . Listen , my students are a little bit more what's the right word ? Better clinically advanced , sound , technically savvy , smart , theoretically aware and generally emotionally mature than your students .

Speaker 1

I just don't understand why you have to take these shots . I just don't . It just seems like you have this need to prove something , and I don't know , because I don't feel the need to prove anything . You know , I think my program speaks for itself . But you know , go ahead , hold on , hold on , hold on , wait , wait , hold on Now . I don't hear nothing . I don't hear nothing from your program . That's because they're all working right now . They're all doing clinical work right now . Okay , and that's the sound of effort , because you said your program speaks for themselves . No , that's the sound of effort .

Speaker 1

It's just crazy how quiet it is , man . Yeah , and you can't , the listener can't hear it . It would be quiet Now . It would be quiet if I wasn't hearing your blood move through your veins from that globe mic . I'm back in my office using the globe mic . Well , I feel like I could tell if you got cavities in your veins , bro . Yeah , man , you can hear my thoughts . Yeah , bro , I can hear the food that you haven't eaten yet , still living on the farm . Look at that mic , bro . God dog , there's so much jokes I can make that would get you fired right now .

Be Lazy and Be Dumb in Therapy

Speaker 1

Have some self-respect , bro . Jokes I can make . That boss got the whole world in his hands right now , like how he deflecting y'all .

Speaker 1

Anyway , like I was saying , bro , so I've been working on this , I do it my students man , just about , like how to be in therapy , how to be in therapy , how to be in therapy , just some quick reminders , some like ankle words . Right , and I know you're going to resonate with this , because these words are not just helpful tools but it describes your personality . Okay , right , so here's the three phrases . Right , six words , three phrases . The first one is be slow . I'll explain . First one is be slow . Second one is be lazy . Third one is be dumb , dumb . Yeah , that's me right . Yeah , that's me . Nailed it , that's me . Here's what I mean dog , here's what I mean right , like dog .

Speaker 1

I feel like so many times when I'm hearing out of practicum students or even internship students , it's like I gotta go somewhere . Yeah , that's what I was gonna say . I gotta make , I gotta make something happen . You know , like got to , you know , and when they can't do it with the dialogue , they do it with trinkets . Yeah , you know what I mean . Yeah , we talked about that . Yeah , yeah , yeah . And so I was trying to get the students in this mindset of , like bruh , be slow man . Like , you got to sit there and create some spaciousness in the session , you know , and I know we don't have enough time to talk about all of this stuff , but , like , maybe we'll do a cast specifically focus on this , you know , or we'll do a lecture series and charge you guys uh for uh . But yeah , um , yeah , be slow , like , just slow down . That that means you got to sit in the pocket .

Speaker 1

If somebody says remember when our girlfriend went to jail which one ? What are you talking about ? We are from the hood . Which one ? No , I didn't want to . I didn't want to . Bones , bones , bones .

Speaker 1

Yeah , and he came out and we were like bone bro , what was it like , you know ? And he was like it was terrible . Nah , it's not like the movies , it was awful . I knew I was in trouble when I used toilet paper for a pillow . And he's like oh , yeah , it's not like the movies , it was awful . I knew I was in trouble when I used toilet paper for a pillow . He's like , yeah , it's not fun .

Speaker 1

And I remember this is what I mean by be slow . It's like you got to sit there and you got to go . Okay , man , tell me about it , right ? So what was the walls like when you went in there ? You know , like , okay , so what sounds ? Do you remember ? You know , and there you know , like , okay , so what sounds ? Do you remember ? You know , and and do it in a way that's appropriate for the person .

Speaker 1

Obviously you don't want to sit there meticulously comb through stuff , but the whole idea is to be able to create these breadcrumbs in session yeah , you know , for to be able to pull back or to be able to relate back to . You know , the the client's experience , and not just their experience of an event , but what did they think about themselves and other people in the world ? What did they start to believe ? You know , yada , yada , yada . Right , but you can't get there if you don't slow down . Yeah , you know , like , put the work into perspective . You know , like , how long , how long is this going to take ? Yeah , you know , how long , should long is this going to take ? Yeah , you know how long should this take , you know .

Speaker 1

And then the second one is uh , be lazy , right ? Yeah , meaning , bruh , you gotta create a process and you gotta trust that process . Don't be coming in there with these grandiose plans of awareness . Bro jesus , how many times have you planned something and it worked out 100 of the time . But I know I'm a drill buster . I like . I know , I know you're lying to me because when I was in the CLC , 100% of the time I'm cutting all this out no , no , because when I was in the CLC and me and you would be doing therapy Listen y'all , this is how he would be , this is how Jesus would be . He'd go oh brother , I just read about this cool activity that I can do and I think next week I'm going to try it . I'm going gonna try it with my favorite client , me , and I'd be like jews man , bro , calm down , bro , calm down . And then , and then you'd be like no , I read about it and I think you know what it's called . It's called sand tray . I'm going to go to Belton Lake and get the sand . I was the equivalent of a giant roaming through a city , knocking down buildings .

Speaker 1

I don't think you've ever added structure to a single one of your sessions , but you know what I mean , bro . Like you know people , how many times have you heard students come in and they're like oh , I'm gonna get them with the and then fill in the blink technique you know well . Yeah , it's not just like darling this is kind of getting into the points I was making to my practicing class last week . It's like , oh man , just shut up . Oh man , just shut up . Shut up , that's what I mean . Like that's just shut up , be quiet , be more curious . Like stop , stop doing the work . Yeah , like , like seriously shut up . Like you have no idea what you're talking about . You're going into session .

Speaker 1

Well , actually , I think this is a manifestation of the trauma and the trauma needs to be confronted . And if you confront the trauma with this type of response , then you can shut up . Seriously , you have an hour and a half worth of therapy . Shut up , no , that's not what's happening in there . Like , how about just be in a relationship with the client and not try to like figure out what's going on with the client so you can help them ? Well , how many , how many times have you had to tell yourself that , yeah , dog , oh , the very , the very three ? Like , uh , pre-practicum , uh , apply techniques and and practicum . Like no , I mean even even now , like , even now , as as a professional , even even now , I think . I think less so because , um , because I made I made a lot of mistakes , trying to overanalyze or just analyze what was going on in session .

Speaker 1

You know like , yeah , but just trying to do too much work Trying to figure out what's going on with the client , and then if I do this , then this will happen , and if I so , okay , I figured that out . So , you know , the combination to this is that , and there's a formula to that , you know like they're a formula to that , you know like they try to formalize you know the client's thought processes and that's not how humans work , you know , okay , okay . But so then here's my third point . My third point is be dumb Right and here's , and then it's be dumb , dot dot dot . And I stole this from may you know , uh , dr , uh , may cho , win , may cho , where she says be dumb in session , be smart out of session , yeah , right , so , like so many times , I'd be in session trying to out think the client . You know , like so many times I'm trying . And that's where I do get caught up in that situation where the client's talking and all I'm thinking about is , oh , this is a manifestation of some organismic . Uh , yeah , this is , this is what it is . You know how it is . Yeah , you know , oh , this person has an inferiority complex , because their experience of their birth order is , you know , and it's like , hey , stop , yeah , stop , yeah , stop , man , stop , be dumb in session , you know , be . And I'm saying sit there and go .

Speaker 1

You have four brothers , man , what's it like to have four brothers , you know ? Like , what's it like for you , like what's it like , what's it like for you ? Tell me about that , you know what I mean . Like just way more . And then , as opposed to , as opposed to , oh , you have four brothers , wait , hold on , you were the middle kid , right ? Oh , that makes sense . That makes sense Because middle kids are . And you were the thing , let me guess , let me guess Middle , and me guess little . And maybe , because you're , you're , you're a three enneagram , aren't you ? You gotta be , because you gotta , you were mentioning this and that , that and this and that , that and that equals that and that , this and that , that . Yep , that makes sense , that .

Speaker 1

So you're a pisces , right , all right , stop , shut up , just just be , just be a little bit more dumb , you know , and and be smart , out of session , so then , so then you get out of session and maybe you're in supervision , are you in consultation , are you just in your group , you know and and you go , okay , first , okay , for , okay , inferiority , okay , fragmented sense itself , whatever theory you have , work through it outside and then go into session and be a normal person . Man , but when you're in your practicum class , are you on a whiteboard etching out what's going on in session , or are you more of a ? Let me just let the class process what's going on in session , or are you more of a ? Let me just let the class process what's going on . And I do a little bit of both . Okay , yeah , I do a little bit of both .

Speaker 1

Honestly , like there's times where so here's how I like to teach it right like if we're in , if we're in group , I'll have students . It's different . If we're internship group , I'll have students . It's different . If we're internship one and they're integrating theories into it , we'll get on the board I actually have it on my board right now where we'll write problem , concept , goal , you know , and it's all theory based , you know . And then we'll make like a little grid and then I'll have somebody say okay , you got five minutes , tell us about the case . You know that we're going to watch five minutes . They tell us about the case and then we take another , like 10 minutes , and then the students will get on the board and write down what they think the problem is , and it and it can't be content related , it has to be process related , you know . And then what the concept they're going to use in therapy to help the client gain some awareness . This is an internship right . This is an internship right . And then the goal , like the end goal of session , you know what I mean . And then we watch the session , right ? Yeah , so we watch a little bit of the session , we come back and then we spend an hour processing what's going on for everybody , what's happening in the case , but then what—so let's look at the problem . Explain your problem from your perspective . Explain how you would use that concept .

Speaker 1

Man , me and Cameron took a golf lesson once , right , by the head golf pro , right , and I'm thinking , you know , I'm thinking we would have that beating balls . But he's going to be like analytical , I'm talking like DEXA scan type , like body composition , kinesthetic sequence type , stuff , right , and all he did was he put us , he put a trash can in the middle of the field trash can , right . And he said I just hit balls to the trash can , yeah , you know . And then he made a competition out of it . So me and carver was trying to get the ball closest to the trash can , right , the trash can was probably like 125 out , you know . So for me that , what's that for you , bro ? 125 ? For me it's probably like a soft , soft pigeon wedge , you know . Maybe like a soft , you know , like , yeah , 50 , 54 degrees , something like that . You know . Like nice buttery , you know . Just like you know , like nice buttery , you know , just like you know . So I'm , you know .

Speaker 1

But , and then we got to a point , to where we were . We're hitting the trash can , you know , and it was . You know how car is like if you put a competition to it , he locks in , you know . Yeah , that's like the whole point . The whole point of that thing was just like he's trying to gauge whether we can gauge distance Right , whether we can modulate our swing to bring the ball closer or further away from the trash can , right , yeah , he's not trying to figure out . Like you know , do you lift up with your left pinky toe before you ? You know he's not doing that . Do you have to correct , he's not looking at , he's not looking at like swinging , and you know , like , are you , are you ? Are you swinging your hips ? Are you doing you know ? Is your arm tucked in ? Are you closing the club ? Are you whatever ? He's just looking at like , hey , can you just it hard enough ? They're soft enough to bring them closer to the trash ? Can that's practical ?

Speaker 1

I think students go in there trying to like . So what's the distance ? What's the wind speed ? What's the rotation of Mars right now ? What's the humidity ? How fast are the greens ? What's in retrograde right now ? So what time is the sunrise this morning ?

Speaker 1

And you said the dew point was what , and you said the dew point was what . And you said the barometric pressure was what . And you know it's like hey , man , just go in there and try to be in a relationship with the other person , be slow , be slow , just try to be lazy , be curious , just be curious . Don't work too hard , don't take the work from the client , slow it down , ask , okay . So you said that . Tell me more , look okay , because I don't understand . I'm a little bit confused . Tell me what this means to you . Just be , just be in a relationship with the other person .

Speaker 1

So then in practicum they come out and then now it's time to analyze the client . You know , I think this is what's going on with the client . Therefore , you should go in there next week and do this . You know , and it's like shut up , like if you are in practicum and you and the words come . The words I think you should comes out of your mouth . That's a , that's a trick . You are triggered . It's so frustrating , you are triggered .

Speaker 1

It's so frustrating you are , you are so frustrating , dog . You know why ? Because then I have to , I have to be in practice . I'm saying like no , don't do that . But then everybody's starting to . You know , I'm like so , so I had to sit in project . I'm going , so I had to sit in project . I mean , I had to be like , hey , man , when you make reflections on what you think your peer should do , it's coming from your own stuff , like you're only seeing what's reflected in your past . So , of course , confrontation about this particular issue is highlighted for you , because that's what you wanted to do with when Meemaw did this one thing to you . You know , that's all of your

Practical Therapy vs. Overanalysis

Speaker 1

stuff . You know , stop it , stop it , let's just . Let's just talk about what the relationship looks like , what's going on within the relationship between these two people , you know , but it's so frustrating to me , dog , so frustrating to me . You should never utter . I think you should , or you know what would be cool if you tried , are you ? You don't have enough clinical experience , not , not now .

Speaker 1

Y'all heard him . That is not fussing . Y'all heard him . Okay , that is not fussing . Y'all heard him . Huh , okay , daddy's not fussing . Mm-hmm , yeah , uh-huh , daddy's not fussing . Nah , g is nah . Because they need to know . Yeah , y'all heard him . Yeah , y'all better . Hey , man , when you teach practice again this week , I'm trying to see if I can get in touch with some midnight players so they can come into the class and regulate Midnight players . Moon , moon's out . Let's go Full moon .

Speaker 1

What was the call ? What was the call what you used to say to us ? We can't give the people the call yeah , because I remember Sometimes you bring us in and give us a little word . I mean , you mean the call to arms . Yeah , the call to arms was hooty hoo . It was hooty hoo , and that was the . You mean the call to arms ? Yeah , yeah , the call to arms was Hootie Hoo . Yeah , it was Hootie Hoo , and that was the . Yeah , hootie Hoo . You didn't get that . You don't remember that call ? Nah , I yeah , hootie Hoo , ride out , man , I play as ride out . All right , all right , I think we got the call . Hey , what's hooty-hoo ? Okay , all right , all right , all right , all right , we got him mad , we got him mad , we got him mad . Anyway , we got to go , man , go man , we gotta go . I know you got supervision . I gotta , I gotta , prepare a lecture for , uh , for my one o'clock class . So , uh , no bro , no man , yeah , you're right , bro , you're right , you're right , man .

Speaker 1

I think there's something about your first time as a therapist man . There's just something about it , bro , in the beginning , where you're just like I got to help , I got to help . This has to mean something . I got to make this session . This has to mean something . This has to be helpful . Yeah , bro , what's the point , bro , bro thing ? This has to be helpful . Yeah , bro , what's the point , bro ?

Speaker 1

Some of my best sessions , man , were like dog , I'm tired , so super slow , I'm look , I'm trying to understand everything . Not , and I'm not being annoying , I'm just trying to understand everything you know . And and then I'm sitting there and I'm not working too hard . You know , client goes , so what do you think ? And I'm like I don't know , man , it feels like you really want me to figure this out , but I got no answers for you . Man , yeah , you know , like , and then I'm sitting there and I know there's some theory in there and I'm like , yeah , it's a fragmented sense itself . I gotta work on integrating out there . That's the top dog on the dog , all right , yeah , whatever , yeah , tell me a little bit more about you know where I'm and I'm not trying to go like . You know what I can do right now . Yeah , I can probably do the empty jacket , probably do the voice dialogue right now . Well , you know , if I bring this chair in this chair , in this chair in this chair in this , yeah , or not even , or just like trying to figure out what's going on for the client , you know , instead of being present with the client .

Speaker 1

Yeah , yeah , man , anyway , all right , all right , man , all right , man , hey , man , one monday down . Hey , we got a couple people that reached out to us for uh for interviews . Yeah , yeah , yeah , we got a circle . We got a circle back with uh , with a couple people , um , so we should . And then you got some , uh , some new people , just some random people who are into things related to counseling .

Speaker 1

Yes , and pretty innovative , innovative stuff that's going on in the field . You know , that may benefit , benefit the listener , I mean . So , yeah , if you uh want to , if you want us to , you know , maybe you you own a company or maybe you're like doing something innovative in the field , or maybe you just want to to chat , just reach out to us , man . Yeah , I know I wanted to . Yeah , I wanted to bring a couple people on . Man , you know , just in our circles and stuff , so we'll see . No , I'm good , I'm good . Yeah , good thing you don't decide , bro , you don't decide . You got no power . Hootie-hoo , no power .

Speaker 1

Who do you say you still got that sweater ? Who do you say you still got your sweater ? Yeah , but I need , we need to go to mom and them house and find that sweater . It's probably in some like it's probably in my closet . No , it's probably in my closet . You know what ? Oh my , I bet it's key in size . Yeah , oh , man , next generation of the Midnight Players , next generation the Midnight Players ride on . Why are we going to be riding some , I don't know , remember , because we had that classic car airbrush on the back , remember , remember that . Anyway . Hi , man , we'll talk to you all later , you remember ? Yeah , you remember that . Anyway , hi man , hi man , we'll talk to you . On the other one , I'm going to go get some work done , all right

Closing Thoughts and Future Guests

Speaker 1

. I'm going to go procrastinate real quick , all right . So I want to let you know . I appreciate that . Yep , bye-bye .
