Hanford City Council Recap for 3/17/26

150,000 visitors don’t show up by accident. We’re back with a quick, clear wrap-up of the City of Hanford City Council meeting from March 17, led by Council Member Travis Paden, and it’s packed with local wins, big numbers, and decisions that affect how our city grows.

First, we slow down long enough to celebrate the people who keep Hanford running. We recognize our Employees of the Year and highlight service awards for team members hitting 10, 15, 20, and 25 years. From public works and utilities to fire and police support roles, these milestones reflect the behind-the-scenes work that makes everyday life smoother and safer for the community.

You're listening to a special episode of the Hanford Insider Podcast, featuring a wrap-up of recent City Council meetings with Travis Payton. Hi Hanford, I'm Council Member Travis Payton, and I'm here to deliver this week's council recap. Let's take a look at some highlights from our March 17th City Council meeting. In our study session, we honored our employees of the year. Fleet mechanic Gustavo Morado was named General Employee of the Year, while Police Officer Jean Vitigeri was named Safety Employee of the Year. We also took time to recognize our service award recipients, meaning those employees celebrating 10, 15, 20, and 25-year work anniversaries. There were a total of eight employees who have worked for the city since the year 2000, including fire captain Frank Etalane, Fire Engineer Thomas Lee, Public Works Refuge Collector Robert Anaya, Refuge Collector Dustin Silva, Fire Battalion Chief Matthew Rowe, Police Communications Dispatch Supervisor Janet Gibbs, Police Property and Evidence Technician Kimberly Hernandez Wilhe, and Utilities and Engineering Water Operator Sammy Martinez. We would like to congratulate our these employees and all the employees of their year of service in celebrating these milestones in the city of Hanford. We appreciate the work you do every day for our community. Also in the study session, we received a much anticipated final report for the 2025-2026 Hanford Winter Wonderland season. There are too many great statistics to share here, but I can say it was another enormously successful season with nearly 150,000 visitors attending Winter Wonderland. This signature Hanford event continues to grow and evolve, and I'm already looking forward to the sixth season this November. Question for you: Did you like the Ferris wheel? Should we bring it back? During the recognition portion of the regular meeting, we congratulated Mia Grace Steinfeld, a young Hanford resident who recently won the 2026 Our Little Miss Universal Beauty 10 through 12 pageant title. Mia's message is one of positivity, kindness, and promoting self-confidence, and we were happy to present her with a certificate of recognition and wish her well on her travels all over the United States this year. One item I would like to highlight from the consent calendar is City Council's authorization for the mayor to sign a letter of opposition to the California High Speed Rail Authority proposal that would allow the authority to collect tax revenues within the areas around high-speed rail stations, including the future Tilar King's Tilery Station near Hanford. By sending this letter, we are advocating for the protection of local revenue and local land use authority. In general business, council approved the purchase of two additional parcels for the city's new public safety building in downtown Hanford. This comes after the purchase of five parcels at our March 3rd City Council meeting. Our next regular city council meeting will be April 7th. Thank you once again for watching and see you next time.
