Just can you take us back to"},{"startTime":256.56,"endTime":261.4,"body":"where it all started? What got you in your career? What got you into technology or"},{"startTime":261.4,"endTime":266.8,"body":"even just educational leadership? Yeah well that being technology was a"},{"startTime":266.8,"endTime":271.44,"body":"traumatic experience but all backtrack in terms of leadership that I'll"},{"startTime":271.44,"endTime":277.08,"body":"back to the technology piece. You know when I became a teacher I coach three"},{"startTime":277.08,"endTime":281.96,"body":"sports. I advise the environmental club. You know I really wanted to try to have"},{"startTime":281.96,"endTime":288.24,"body":"as much either direct or indirect impact on students and my father was a"},{"startTime":288.24,"endTime":293.04,"body":"principal for over 30 years at the same school in New Jersey and I guess in a"},{"startTime":293.04,"endTime":296.88,"body":"sense I wanted to make a bigger difference but I also wanted to be like dad and"},{"startTime":296.88,"endTime":302.04,"body":"you know after some time in the classroom I pursued my degree in administration"},{"startTime":302.04,"endTime":308.0,"body":"and the rest is history. I eventually became an administrator in the New"},{"startTime":308.0,"endTime":312.96,"body":"Millford school district in New Jersey. I served various roles in a brief amount"},{"startTime":312.96,"endTime":317.64,"body":"of time. I was athletic director of ice principal and before I know it before I"},{"startTime":317.64,"endTime":323.84,"body":"knew I was principal where I wasn't that position for eight years and you know"},{"startTime":323.84,"endTime":329.24,"body":"with technology you know at the time I was a little bit younger I was in my"},{"startTime":329.24,"endTime":335.32,"body":"30s. I thought I had it all figured out I really thought the key to being"},{"startTime":335.32,"endTime":340.6,"body":"innovative was just having access to the stuff. State-of-the-art computer labs"},{"startTime":340.6,"endTime":346.96,"body":"interactive whiteboards. However there were things that were I no go in my book"},{"startTime":346.96,"endTime":351.24,"body":"you know I wrote the policies in my district to block and ban social media."},{"startTime":351.24,"endTime":358.24,"body":"Students were not allowed to bring devices to school very limited use during"},{"startTime":358.24,"endTime":364.12,"body":"instructional time and then my traumatic experience was after I got done chasing a"},{"startTime":364.12,"endTime":368.96,"body":"student through my school because he broke our cell phone policy and he was so"},{"startTime":368.96,"endTime":374.56,"body":"afraid of me because I was gonna take the device for a year. He thanked me for"},{"startTime":374.56,"endTime":378.92,"body":"creating a jail out of what should be a school and that was the first kind of"},{"startTime":378.92,"endTime":383.76,"body":"punch and a gut. The other I wouldn't say was a traumatic experience but it was"},{"startTime":383.76,"endTime":389.28,"body":"an enlightening experience was shortly after that student laid into me in a"},{"startTime":389.28,"endTime":395.12,"body":"respectful way. I got on social media and I swear it would never be on social"},{"startTime":395.12,"endTime":404.96,"body":"media. I got on Twitter in 2009 as a I guess an early adopter and Twitter helped"},{"startTime":404.96,"endTime":412.8,"body":"me take the blinders off and really set on a path to A be a better leader for my"},{"startTime":412.8,"endTime":420.48,"body":"teachers be be a better principal for my students but see truly create an"},{"startTime":420.48,"endTime":426.72,"body":"efficacy based culture where technology was used in a purposeful way to support"},{"startTime":426.72,"endTime":432.76,"body":"and enhance what the research told us was already effective and that's where I am"},{"startTime":432.76,"endTime":437.68,"body":"today. Wow I mean that's I think that mirrors a lot of what I've experienced as"},{"startTime":437.68,"endTime":443.16,"body":"well in terms of yes you could have that interactive whiteboard you could use"},{"startTime":443.16,"endTime":448.4,"body":"those devices but using it to enhance the learning experience I think for the"},{"startTime":448.4,"endTime":455.6,"body":"kids and and almost in that 2009 to present day this this gray area that is now"},{"startTime":455.6,"endTime":461.4,"body":"starting to change and evolve into something else and become that transition zone"},{"startTime":461.4,"endTime":466.48,"body":"between what we used to think and how we used to teach versus all these tools"},{"startTime":466.48,"endTime":470.8,"body":"and all the websites and all the you know bells and whistles that are out there"},{"startTime":470.8,"endTime":476.08,"body":"that teachers and kids now have at their fingertips. Yeah I think you we wrote a"},{"startTime":476.08,"endTime":481.84,"body":"very intriguing comments bells and whistles and and that's what we have to"},{"startTime":481.84,"endTime":487.04,"body":"cognizant of you know just because students are using technology just because"},{"startTime":487.04,"endTime":491.32,"body":"you're using technologies educator it doesn't mean that it is automatically"},{"startTime":491.32,"endTime":498.36,"body":"innovative practice you know innovation is new better but actual result that"},{"startTime":498.36,"endTime":503.8,"body":"substantiates new and better and you know what I always you know really think"},{"startTime":503.8,"endTime":509.8,"body":"about is you know two things how are learn how are students using technology to"},{"startTime":509.8,"endTime":515.8,"body":"learn in ways they couldn't without it and number two if you're an adult how does"},{"startTime":515.8,"endTime":521.12,"body":"your use of technology represent a fundamental improvement over what you did in"},{"startTime":521.12,"endTime":527.36,"body":"the past without it right and if you can't answer those questions it's okay not to"},{"startTime":527.36,"endTime":533.84,"body":"use technology and and I think the key thing is you know yes the adults might"},{"startTime":533.84,"endTime":539.88,"body":"use it as a part of really really sound tier one instruction but we want to get"},{"startTime":539.88,"endTime":546.32,"body":"to the point where our learners are using it to create communicate collaborate"},{"startTime":546.32,"endTime":552.76,"body":"to you know as a way for them to demonstrate mastering a variety of ways right no"},{"startTime":552.76,"endTime":557.32,"body":"I couldn't agree a hundred more than I mean yeah absolutely you said it"},{"startTime":557.32,"endTime":562.28,"body":"perfectly let's go back when you were a kid you were talking in your most recent"},{"startTime":562.28,"endTime":567.68,"body":"book disruptive thinking which I love the title by the way you grab and hook any"},{"startTime":567.68,"endTime":572.28,"body":"fan of technology whether it's a teacher or anyone out there and you talk about"},{"startTime":572.28,"endTime":578.32,"body":"the 1960s animated cartoon the Jetsons and how influential it was to you and"},{"startTime":578.32,"endTime":581.88,"body":"especially you know with predictions and just kind of like what the future like an"},{"startTime":581.88,"endTime":586.92,"body":"idea of what the future could possibly look like even though it was a cartoon for"},{"startTime":586.92,"endTime":590.12,"body":"me it was Star Trek I think it was this and it's the same idea you know the the"},{"startTime":590.12,"endTime":595.28,"body":"communicator the the the holographic images the just the doors opening and"},{"startTime":595.28,"endTime":601.84,"body":"closing talking to a computer literally like a Siri would so it's those kind of"},{"startTime":601.84,"endTime":606.56,"body":"things that inspire people it's so but with you what's one thing that people may"},{"startTime":606.56,"endTime":611.92,"body":"not know about you that influenced your attraction to technology besides that or"},{"startTime":611.92,"endTime":619.48,"body":"was that it no that was not it even know the Jetsons actuary predicted zoom"},{"startTime":619.48,"endTime":627.4,"body":"meetings tell a doctor visits online classes you know I then you know you saw"},{"startTime":627.4,"endTime":633.36,"body":"that but you know you focused on the key here and now you know my focus was on the"},{"startTime":633.36,"endTime":643.92,"body":"ATRAC the boom box or 64 the Apple 2e the 64 yeah and you know my first"},{"startTime":643.92,"endTime":649.72,"body":"lip phone my blackberry but I really think and it took me a while to report the"},{"startTime":649.72,"endTime":657.08,"body":"register I think what really got me into the benefits and opportunities of"},{"startTime":657.08,"endTime":661.72,"body":"technology was mr. south who I also talk about in the book you know mr."},{"startTime":661.72,"endTime":666.12,"body":"south was my seventh and eighth grade science teacher I went to a K8 school in"},{"startTime":666.12,"endTime":671.32,"body":"rural New Jersey and yes there are rural parts of New Jersey everybody and he asked"},{"startTime":671.32,"endTime":676.88,"body":"us how will you colonize Mars and the class have to answer that question and he"},{"startTime":676.88,"endTime":682.28,"body":"put us in teams he used the cooperative learning jigsaw method where each team"},{"startTime":682.28,"endTime":689.16,"body":"was a piece to the puzzle wow the pieces fit together to help us colonize Mars and"},{"startTime":689.16,"endTime":693.92,"body":"he let us choose you know we think about choice he was doing choice way back in"},{"startTime":693.92,"endTime":699.12,"body":"the 80s he had us do research to choose an innovative solution that would help"},{"startTime":699.12,"endTime":706.28,"body":"the class colonize Mars my partner and I found through our very intense research"},{"startTime":706.28,"endTime":711.2,"body":"using the encyclopedia device called the master driver and a master driver was"},{"startTime":711.2,"endTime":716.16,"body":"like you mentioned Star Trek it was like a hypothetical space cannon that would"},{"startTime":716.16,"endTime":721.0,"body":"be on the moon and would basically propel resources using gravitational"},{"startTime":721.0,"endTime":725.72,"body":"forces from the surface of the moon to Mars where we caught on another device"},{"startTime":725.72,"endTime":732.12,"body":"Dan we didn't have to just research we had to build working prototypes we use"},{"startTime":732.12,"endTime":739.2,"body":"technology we actually using wires and circuits and batteries we actually"},{"startTime":739.2,"endTime":745.08,"body":"throw a research built a working prototype that shot toothpicks then he had"},{"startTime":745.08,"endTime":749.92,"body":"assigned permission slips and go to his creepy garage on the weekends which"},{"startTime":749.92,"endTime":754.88,"body":"you can't do more and and I say creepy because it was in the middle of nowhere but"},{"startTime":754.88,"endTime":760.2,"body":"it was like a technological haven and we built a larger prototype that shot tennis"},{"startTime":760.2,"endTime":765.2,"body":"balls so you think about choice you think about personalization"},{"startTime":765.2,"endTime":770.44,"body":"how useful use of technology he then had a five-point rubric for our research"},{"startTime":770.44,"endTime":774.56,"body":"paper that we had the right so it took me a while to really put the pieces"},{"startTime":774.56,"endTime":780.6,"body":"together that a none of this is new and and that's what really holds educators"},{"startTime":780.6,"endTime":784.92,"body":"back when they see a new tool they see it as just another thing they have to do"},{"startTime":784.92,"endTime":789.4,"body":"they don't have time you know good teaching is good teaching learning is"},{"startTime":789.4,"endTime":793.52,"body":"learning leadership is leadership right answer your question it really was"},{"startTime":793.52,"endTime":799.2,"body":"Mr. South that unintentionally put me on the track to where I am today does he"},{"startTime":799.2,"endTime":803.56,"body":"know that have you ever had a chance to actually tell me oh yeah or was just it"},{"startTime":803.56,"endTime":809.52,"body":"I dedicated one of my books oh wow nice very nice that's great so I mean"},{"startTime":809.52,"endTime":814.36,"body":"obviously you're a great enthusiastic and very energetic communicator you you"},{"startTime":814.36,"endTime":818.96,"body":"know really portray through story and just having the opportunity here you"},{"startTime":818.96,"endTime":821.84,"body":"even now and I've heard you before you know this is not the first time I've I've"},{"startTime":821.84,"endTime":828.88,"body":"listened to you being able to address audiences around the world and have those"},{"startTime":828.88,"endTime":834.4,"body":"experiences talking to hundreds if not thousands of people at times I've done"},{"startTime":834.4,"endTime":841.28,"body":"that a couple times at isty I know you have as well is is that what you know doing"},{"startTime":841.28,"endTime":845.48,"body":"those kind of big conferences really interacting with an audience is that what"},{"startTime":845.48,"endTime":850.96,"body":"it kind of reaffirms the importance of your work and and and your drive to"},{"startTime":850.96,"endTime":855.96,"body":"educational excellence so to speak no that's a tricky question because you know"},{"startTime":855.96,"endTime":863.24,"body":"there are some people that their goal is to be onstage and for me that's part of"},{"startTime":863.24,"endTime":870.36,"body":"it but I don't want to be seen as the sage on the stage and what I try to do when"},{"startTime":870.36,"endTime":875.04,"body":"I get on stage is yeah you want to use brain research you want to touch on a"},{"startTime":875.04,"endTime":880.76,"body":"motion you want to get people laugh you want them to maybe shed a tear but I want"},{"startTime":880.76,"endTime":887.32,"body":"people to leave not just with hope but a concrete idea on how they can do this and"},{"startTime":887.32,"endTime":896.28,"body":"the one thing that I weave into all of my my my keynotes is that qualitative"},{"startTime":896.28,"endTime":900.96,"body":"evidence I'm showing what the pedagogical changes can look like through the"},{"startTime":900.96,"endTime":907.32,"body":"lens of teachers of administrators K-12 so yes I love getting on stage and doing"},{"startTime":907.32,"endTime":912.72,"body":"that but if I wasn't in classrooms if I wasn't working shoulder to shoulder"},{"startTime":912.72,"endTime":921.0,"body":"weekly with teachers administrators coaches I think my message would be pretty"},{"startTime":921.0,"endTime":928.8,"body":"substanceless and you know I spend I visit thousands of classrooms every year one"},{"startTime":928.8,"endTime":936.0,"body":"of my non-negotiables for myself is that I have to spend time in classrooms so I"},{"startTime":936.0,"endTime":940.84,"body":"have the needed context so I know the challenges that educators are dealing"},{"startTime":940.84,"endTime":946.04,"body":"with but then how I can kind of show the importance of feedback loops and how"},{"startTime":946.04,"endTime":952.32,"body":"educators they want timely practical specific feedback but to share those"},{"startTime":952.32,"endTime":959.88,"body":"successes you know there's no bigger motivator than success success breed success"},{"startTime":959.88,"endTime":966.92,"body":"and here's what educators always tell me Eric we know the why we hear it everywhere"},{"startTime":966.92,"endTime":974.92,"body":"every speaker talks about the why we need to know how do we do it and what can"},{"startTime":974.92,"endTime":984.28,"body":"it look like so I look at my role as multifaceted and even know I am I cannot say"},{"startTime":984.28,"endTime":990.32,"body":"that I am a practitioner because I am not employed by a school or district I"},{"startTime":990.32,"endTime":996.68,"body":"make sure that I spend a great deal of time shoulder to shoulder with those"},{"startTime":996.68,"endTime":1002.4,"body":"people whose stories that I am then fortunate to share when I am on stage I think"},{"startTime":1002.4,"endTime":1008.04,"body":"getting into the trenches and doing that is probably at the forefront of what it's"},{"startTime":1008.04,"endTime":1012.96,"body":"all about and it actually brings us it's a perfect segue into my next question so"},{"startTime":1012.96,"endTime":1019.08,"body":"you know even with disruptive thinking you encourage educators to be risk"},{"startTime":1019.08,"endTime":1023.88,"body":"takers to try new things and kind of step out of that comfort zone be innovators in"},{"startTime":1023.88,"endTime":1029.2,"body":"their classroom what strategies or advice would you give to teachers who may be a"},{"startTime":1029.2,"endTime":1033.36,"body":"little hesitant to step outside of that comfort you know comfort zone and and"},{"startTime":1033.36,"endTime":1038.16,"body":"adopt that disruptive thinking mindset what what kind of things would would"},{"startTime":1038.16,"endTime":1043.04,"body":"you give to them as a takeaway that they can actually implement yep and the"},{"startTime":1043.04,"endTime":1045.88,"body":"fiancee question I kind of just wanted to say you mentioned disrupt the"},{"startTime":1045.88,"endTime":1051.88,"body":"thinking and kind of want to define that yes please disrupt the thinking is the"},{"startTime":1051.88,"endTime":1057.4,"body":"ability of our learners to replace conventional ideas with innovative solutions"},{"startTime":1057.4,"endTime":1064.32,"body":"to authentic problems now notice there is no technology it is inferred a"},{"startTime":1064.32,"endTime":1069.88,"body":"technology is one of many ways to be a disruptive thinker but when we think about"},{"startTime":1069.88,"endTime":1074.44,"body":"disruptive events the pandemic the most disruptive event to ever impact"},{"startTime":1074.44,"endTime":1080.2,"body":"education the other major disruptive event that we will talk about on this"},{"startTime":1080.2,"endTime":1083.88,"body":"podcast because some things we don't want to talk about in terms of challenges"},{"startTime":1083.88,"endTime":1088.48,"body":"that educators are dealing with but technology is it just ruptor think about it"},{"startTime":1088.48,"endTime":1093.2,"body":"six months ago no one knew what chat gbt barred were we knew what art of"},{"startTime":1093.2,"endTime":1099.64,"body":"intelligence was mostly from sky net and terminator however you know now it's"},{"startTime":1099.64,"endTime":1105.36,"body":"it's here so for educators here's the thing everybody we are naturally afraid to"},{"startTime":1105.36,"endTime":1113.72,"body":"take risks and the idea here is what I can say unequivocally is in education"},{"startTime":1113.72,"endTime":1119.84,"body":"we do not really have true accountability we don't get rid of ineffective"},{"startTime":1119.84,"endTime":1124.0,"body":"teachers and administrators so what I always say is what are you really afraid of"},{"startTime":1124.0,"endTime":1129.92,"body":"if you're doing this for the best interests of kids you could plan the best"},{"startTime":1129.92,"endTime":1134.36,"body":"lesson I remember when I was a teacher I would spend so much time planning what I"},{"startTime":1134.36,"endTime":1139.68,"body":"thought was the best lesson and it tanked and you know what that becomes an"},{"startTime":1139.68,"endTime":1144.04,"body":"experience that we learn from I think that's happened to everybody at some point"},{"startTime":1144.04,"endTime":1150.12,"body":"right so I think taking the risks with technology is you know let's use backwards"},{"startTime":1150.12,"endTime":1155.08,"body":"design you know think about the goals you're trying to accomplish work back from"},{"startTime":1155.08,"endTime":1160.24,"body":"your learning target which is your unpacked standard or standards think about"},{"startTime":1160.24,"endTime":1165.96,"body":"the high-effect strategies that you will use and then figure out how will"},{"startTime":1165.96,"endTime":1171.12,"body":"technology allow me to do what I should already be doing better and when I"},{"startTime":1171.12,"endTime":1175.4,"body":"think about risks I don't even think about a risk I always say I think student"},{"startTime":1175.4,"endTime":1181.12,"body":"voice is the catalyst for the purpose of use of technology why because in"},{"startTime":1181.12,"endTime":1186.32,"body":"almost every whole group lesson we are going to use reviewing reviews of"},{"startTime":1186.32,"endTime":1192.24,"body":"prior learning checks for understanding and closure okay technology can pause to really look at not just the questions we're asking our"},{"startTime":1483.08,"endTime":1488.48,"body":"learners but the tasks and the assessments that we're using it really is now"},{"startTime":1488.48,"endTime":1494.64,"body":"forcing our hands to go to a more project based approach where students have"},{"startTime":1494.64,"endTime":1500.6,"body":"to create something whether as simple as a video audio while they're in class"},{"startTime":1500.6,"endTime":1505.24,"body":"because outside of class they could just do the stuff through AI and get all"},{"startTime":1505.24,"endTime":1510.6,"body":"that information also I think it's an opportunity to have our learners vet what"},{"startTime":1510.6,"endTime":1517.8,"body":"they see on AI I see trends very repetitive words not really linking to you"},{"startTime":1517.8,"endTime":1523.36,"body":"know evidence or research to support the claims all that it's being pulled from"},{"startTime":1523.36,"endTime":1531.04,"body":"all over the web right AI presents a copyright nightmare because it's pulling"},{"startTime":1531.04,"endTime":1537.64,"body":"that information from somewhere without due credit so I think there's opportunities"},{"startTime":1537.64,"endTime":1541.48,"body":"but also there's some things that we need to be cautious of so are we spending"},{"startTime":1541.48,"endTime":1546.6,"body":"time on going back to skills versus collaboration and every all the other points"},{"startTime":1546.6,"endTime":1551.4,"body":"that you mentioned are we spending you know is it more of like I don't want to"},{"startTime":1551.4,"endTime":1555.84,"body":"say waste of time but is it more obsolete some of the skills that we're obsolete tough but if we're being honest many education systems the"},{"startTime":1567.72,"endTime":1573.72,"body":"structure and function was designed for a world that no longer exists it thing at the same time the same way we now have so much"},{"startTime":1584.84,"endTime":1591.24,"body":"information about how kids learn we all know that does not work it doesn't
