I'm glad that you actually have some background in probably the biggest education setting in the world."},{"startTime":285.0,"endTime":297.0,"body":"It was quite a few years ago, almost 10 years ago now since I was in the New York City classrooms followed by a stent in Chicago Public Schools."},{"startTime":297.0,"endTime":311.0,"body":"But a lot of what I do today is based on being in the classroom and what I learned from that, creating products that hopefully impact students, get them excited about coming to school every single day."},{"startTime":311.0,"endTime":320.0,"body":"With robotics and coding these days, that is a guarantee almost. It's almost like you don't even have to try."},{"startTime":320.0,"endTime":326.0,"body":"Yeah, most of the time. I'm sometimes, you know, students are afraid they don't think it's for them."},{"startTime":326.0,"endTime":335.0,"body":"But we at Sphero are hopefully creating products that are approachable, easy to use and any student can see that it was made for them."},{"startTime":335.0,"endTime":347.0,"body":"Well, listen, it's a pleasure to have you with us today to talk about Sphero because that's it's a it's a big thing when you have to start to talk about next generation 21st century hands on type of work."},{"startTime":347.0,"endTime":356.0,"body":"But for technology coordinators teachers, even administrators who are looking into starting some sort of a program like Sphero has."},{"startTime":356.0,"endTime":362.0,"body":"And may not know what Sphero is or what it does. How would you describe it and what are the goals of the program?"},{"startTime":362.0,"endTime":372.0,"body":"At Sphero our mission is to inspire the creatives of tomorrow and that can sound really broad on."},{"startTime":372.0,"endTime":378.0,"body":"But we don't know what tomorrow will bring. So our goal is to bring that critical thinking into the classroom."},{"startTime":378.0,"endTime":385.0,"body":"And we do that in a variety of ways. But first and foremost, it is by creating engaging hardware products."},{"startTime":385.0,"endTime":394.0,"body":"And alongside those products come curriculum and software to support both the student learning as well as the educator in the classroom."},{"startTime":394.0,"endTime":403.0,"body":"And we have products that start as young as pre K. And it is a tool that you can use screenless coding."},{"startTime":403.0,"endTime":409.0,"body":"It's a tie to fun. I have young kids at home that it's their favorite product. It's called Indy."},{"startTime":409.0,"endTime":418.0,"body":"And we also have these electronic building blocks where students can make and create and become inventors called little bits."},{"startTime":418.0,"endTime":423.0,"body":"Our flagship product is bolt that most people who know about Sphero have heard about."},{"startTime":423.0,"endTime":429.0,"body":"It is a robotic ball that is packed with sensors that students can program and code."},{"startTime":429.0,"endTime":441.0,"body":"And we have a rover where you can be a maker, creator, go beyond using things like raspberry pie and a micro vet to even go beyond what you can imagine."},{"startTime":441.0,"endTime":444.0,"body":"And then our latest product is called blueprint."},{"startTime":444.0,"endTime":465.0,"body":"And blueprint is really taking place in the engineering classroom. We're hoping to really make an impact there where going beyond computer science more into that engineering, making it a principle, making it easy, showing any student no matter their background that they can do it as well."},{"startTime":465.0,"endTime":469.0,"body":"So with all the products that Sphero has, that is an amazing lineup."},{"startTime":469.0,"endTime":487.0,"body":"It really is an amazing lineup. It gives it there's a lot of choice there and directs you can go with how does how does the innovative approach to steam education set it apart from traditional learning methods and of course go through what steam is for those people who don't know who have never heard that before."},{"startTime":487.0,"endTime":501.0,"body":"So, see if you've never heard it science technology engineering arts and mathematics. We put it all together because in order to be innovative and different you need every single component."},{"startTime":501.0,"endTime":508.0,"body":"It is not just about the science or just the technology or the mathematics. You also need the arts."},{"startTime":508.0,"endTime":520.0,"body":"And it also makes things new creative and different. But to answer your question, which was about approaching I took the wrong question."},{"startTime":520.0,"endTime":524.0,"body":"So how does it set it apart from just traditional learning methods?"},{"startTime":524.0,"endTime":540.0,"body":"Because like you just actually mentioned it, you know, it doesn't circle a lot of different curriculum areas and you know, I think teachers sometimes you know feel that nervousness like how do you kind of put it all together in a nice little package. So how does Sphero actually do that."},{"startTime":540.0,"endTime":552.0,"body":"Yeah, well, we're different than most products because we are hands on a lot of times when you think about something like coding or technology, you think of a student set behind a computer monitor."},{"startTime":552.0,"endTime":572.0,"body":"But that's not what we do. We highly encourage engagement and collaboration and with hands on products such as bolt or indie students have to work together. They have to find different solutions to you know answer those challenging problems that they're facing in the classroom."},{"startTime":572.0,"endTime":586.0,"body":"And the Sphero also takes our products and offers a cross curricular approach. So when you are teaching the the the degree in theorem. Sure, you know, a squared plus B squared equals C squared."},{"startTime":586.0,"endTime":605.0,"body":"And then you're going to bring it on their piece of paper. But now I'm going to bring it into the real world. I am going to use that to program a robot. I'm going to see it move. And that engagement and collaboration factor just takes on a whole new meaning in the classroom when you see those students work together. And that concept come to life."},{"startTime":605.0,"endTime":624.0,"body":"And you actually just almost took the words out of my mouth for my next question, which was, you know, what are some examples of how Sphero's robots can actually enhance that student understanding of either, you know, any complex, you know, concept and science and technology engineering arts math all that together."},{"startTime":624.0,"endTime":639.0,"body":"It's interesting how you already kind of are ahead of that game. Yeah, so first computer science isn't always a core subject that is taught separately from everything else specifically in elementary school."},{"startTime":639.0,"endTime":652.0,"body":"So it's really important for us to find ways that teachers can integrate our products into the core curriculum. We have a variety of lessons, whether you are a math science or language arts teacher."},{"startTime":652.0,"endTime":661.0,"body":"One lesson in particular that we created actually right around the, you know, COVID pandemic was understanding, you know, how does disease spread."},{"startTime":661.0,"endTime":686.0,"body":"With the volt robot, we have infrared sensors that are built in and you can do robot to robot communication. A third grader can do robot to robot communication and understand and communicate as they get closer, one robot to the next, spreading a message from one to the next and understanding about that closeness and that proximity bringing that subject to life."},{"startTime":686.0,"endTime":715.0,"body":"We've also taken that same lesson and put a different wrapper around it with social emotional learning who knew that robotics and social emotional learning actually tied together and it's about spreading good messages, positive messages from one robot to the next and students opening up that conversation about when you talk positively about yourself or others and how that message and goodness can go from one to the next and how quickly"},{"startTime":715.0,"endTime":722.0,"body":"or the opposite. So it's really important not just the sciences, but also things like social emotional learning."},{"startTime":722.0,"endTime":729.0,"body":"Before you continue that you actually hit on a couple of really great points that I want to kind of just go over for a second because I think it's important."},{"startTime":729.0,"endTime":749.0,"body":"I teach media arts technology. I am out of the classroom. I'm not really teaching those core subjects, although I do do things that integrate core curriculum into media arts, you know, whether it's, you know, sketch noting or coding or animation, things like that."},{"startTime":749.0,"endTime":759.0,"body":"I think teachers who on the flip side on the opposite of me who are in the classroom who are not as tech savvy or not as tech understanding in terms of how to integrate it."},{"startTime":759.0,"endTime":769.0,"body":"I think that's it's a good point to make because that does I think help them in terms of their planning and thinking about where they are in the world today, 21st century world."},{"startTime":769.0,"endTime":778.0,"body":"Definitely. It's so important to think about and integrate that, but you know, a lot of times this core subjects."},{"startTime":778.0,"endTime":791.0,"body":"If we're just following by the book, it's the same thing that we've taught over and over again, but integrating that technology shows students where it can go and integrating real world concepts."},{"startTime":791.0,"endTime":801.0,"body":"You know, along that same line, you know, even in those tech classes where things do get more advanced like cybersecurity, right, a very hot topic these days."},{"startTime":801.0,"endTime":805.0,"body":"And cybersecurity goes beyond creating a complex password."},{"startTime":805.0,"endTime":817.0,"body":"At sphere, we are bringing those topics to life, helping students understand, you know, what's happening out there. We have a lesson on denial of service attacks."},{"startTime":817.0,"endTime":827.0,"body":"And most work, what are those? I don't understand, you know, in a tech classroom, an engineering classroom, a teacher might talk about it hypothetically."},{"startTime":827.0,"endTime":837.0,"body":"But then we bring it down to our robots. They see it in person in real life. And hopefully that understanding comes that much quicker to our students."},{"startTime":837.0,"endTime":852.0,"body":"It's so important for the integration of it, you know, and you've hit upon it a couple of times. Integration integration, how to kind of, you know, almost expand what they're seeing within those walls of their classroom to that outside world. I think that's so important."},{"startTime":852.0,"endTime":864.0,"body":"It definitely is. And I know sometimes teachers are afraid to tackle that right. Like, how do I integrate something like a robot into my language arts classroom."},{"startTime":864.0,"endTime":875.0,"body":"And our message always is just try. We don't expect you to be the expert because I can guarantee you there will be a student in your classroom who knows more than you."},{"startTime":875.0,"endTime":889.0,"body":"And we encourage our students to fail that we also want our educators to try and they may fail, but in the long run, it will have a huge impact and get students excited about learning."},{"startTime":889.0,"endTime":895.0,"body":"I had a conversation with a fourth grader today. First time I've seen them because it's beginning of the school year."},{"startTime":895.0,"endTime":910.0,"body":"And he's very tech savvy. He knows what he's talking about. And he was selling me, however, this summer, he was putting together his own supercomputer and telling me all the things that he was doing. And I was so impressed with how he was verbally explaining what he did."},{"startTime":910.0,"endTime":923.0,"body":"I was so impressed with the ideas that he had, how what he wants to do. And we're talking about a fourth grader. So he's what nine years old, you know, he's just turning 10 and just that it just speaks volumes."},{"startTime":923.0,"endTime":937.0,"body":"And he would have never created that computer or started to create that computer. If he wouldn't have tried first. And I guarantee you, he probably failed multiple times. It didn't work the first time, but keep coming back."},{"startTime":937.0,"endTime":942.0,"body":"You know, I think us as adults can learn a ton from that fourth grader."},{"startTime":942.0,"endTime":951.0,"body":"Yeah, he actually told me he said I tried to do work. I added something. I did this. I changed that. I said, wow, he said one of these days you're going to rule the world with computers."},{"startTime":951.0,"endTime":965.0,"body":"So over 40,000 educators presently use fear, which I think it's an impressive number. But what would you say to those teachers who may feel completely overwhelmed when they hear words like robotics or steam or or even computer science?"},{"startTime":965.0,"endTime":973.0,"body":"What's the easiest plug-and-play way to get started with Spiro without that anxiety of those scary coding buzzwords getting in the way?"},{"startTime":973.0,"endTime":985.0,"body":"It comes down to that cross-curricular component. We've talked about a few times here. We offer some easy solutions at Spiro where you tell us who you are."},{"startTime":985.0,"endTime":997.0,"body":"Are you a third grade teacher who teaches math? Are you a fifth grade teacher who is teaching social studies? Are you a middle school maker space?"},{"startTime":997.0,"endTime":1009.0,"body":"You know, librarian, who are you? What are your goals? Then we have activities and lessons that are just through this. Just get started."},{"startTime":1009.0,"endTime":1015.0,"body":"You know, hoping that our getting started pathway is easy."},{"startTime":1015.0,"endTime":1025.0,"body":"With any technology, there might be some bumps in the road and you know, we're there for them through either our support team or all of our online resources."},{"startTime":1025.0,"endTime":1041.0,"body":"But you never know until you try. They are an expert in what they do. We are an expert in what we do. And so we're hoping that combining math with our robots will be fun and engaging for the students."},{"startTime":1041.0,"endTime":1047.0,"body":"You know, to see kids eyes light up in the classroom when you roll out that full power pack."},{"startTime":1047.0,"endTime":1061.0,"body":"Kind of like when we were kids and I remember the teacher rolling out the TV on wheels, that that's what we're hoping that same excitement comes but much more engaging with something like Spiro."},{"startTime":1061.0,"endTime":1075.0,"body":"Like you said, if the teachers aren't really 100% comfortable, there's probably a kid or two in that classroom that it will be. I had a conversation with a few kids today where they are where they tried both."},{"startTime":1075.0,"endTime":1080.0,"body":"And for the very first time just to test it out just to see what they did. I kind of just gave to them."},{"startTime":1080.0,"endTime":1092.0,"body":"And I put the you know, the programs that you guys already have created in the starter packs that you have up on my panel and I said just just play for like 10 minutes tell me what you think and they could not get enough of it."},{"startTime":1092.0,"endTime":1104.0,"body":"They loved it hands on totally into it engaged the conversations that they were having. I mean, you could have just been a fly in the wall and been impressed with just listening in for about 30 seconds."},{"startTime":1104.0,"endTime":1116.0,"body":"We a lot of times teachers say, well, I'm afraid the students are just going to drive the robot around. I'm like, they're not going to be able to code. Why would they code if they can drive it?"},{"startTime":1116.0,"endTime":1127.0,"body":"And they do those first 10 minutes to take it out. They see the little drive function chart. They're going to drive it. They're going to run it into a wall, which it won't break, which is great. Run it off the desk doesn't matter."},{"startTime":1127.0,"endTime":1148.0,"body":"And they see inside this clear robotic ball like, well, I want to do that. I want to make the matrix animation. I want to do robot to robot communication. They're the ones who are actually leading and going further than many teachers have ever thought possible."},{"startTime":1148.0,"endTime":1155.0,"body":"Is there a success story that you have from a student's perspective on on all that engagement and that excitement from it?"},{"startTime":1155.0,"endTime":1184.0,"body":"Yeah, I know you don't want to do 1000. But you know, one comes to mind recently, we have launched our season for a bureau global challenge, which classrooms can participate in by by registering teams of five, and we've had it. This is season four, but in season three, we had a teacher who's participated in a number of years with a variety of after school students."},{"startTime":1184.0,"endTime":1198.0,"body":"And last year she had about 16s participate and one of the teams was an all girls team is an after school program that they participated in. I'm pretty sure their parents signed them up because they needed something to do after school."},{"startTime":1198.0,"endTime":1206.0,"body":"And they didn't think it was for them, but they had to be there. These girls made it to our world champion shows."},{"startTime":1206.0,"endTime":1228.0,"body":"They when they spoke to us, they said, yeah, we didn't think it was for us that, you know, it was a boys club. And that's what they felt like, but then when given these challenges that weren't just about programming, but also the art and the math and the science that you had to integrate it with programming."},{"startTime":1228.0,"endTime":1247.0,"body":"They truly excelled. One of them even said, she was like, I never even thought computer science was for me. I thought it was for nerds, but was so excited that, you know, she was talking about taking more computer sciences and doing some clubs over the summer."},{"startTime":1247.0,"endTime":1261.0,"body":"Just to see that excitement and something that these girls thought was an attainable or wasn't for them and just being so excited about it. Everyone believes that computer science is someone sitting behind a computer terminal."},{"startTime":1261.0,"endTime":1272.0,"body":"And that's not it at all. It's computational thinking. It's critical thinking. And most importantly collaboration, our engineers at Sphero don't work in a silo."},{"startTime":1272.0,"endTime":1291.0,"body":"They talk, they communicate, they create and those girls saw that and it was so exciting to actually see them realize that by being forced to sign up for an after school program, right, and going to the world championships of this computer science competition. So it was pretty awesome."},{"startTime":1291.0,"endTime":1310.0,"body":"Sometimes you don't know what you don't know, right, before you get into it. That's amazing. And I like what you said about what computer science really is. It's more than just, you know, coding coding is is obviously part of it. But and it's a good part of it. But there is it does branch out into other other areas. And I think that's important to note."},{"startTime":1310.0,"endTime":1325.0,"body":"Thank you for that. Let's say a teacher or even administrator wants to get started with Sphero, but they may not have the funding to do so. Are there ways to make it easier for schools to get their hands on some of the products that Sphero offers through either, you know, federal or state funding grants."},{"startTime":1325.0,"endTime":1353.0,"body":"Yep. So on our website, Sphero.com, we offer kind of a toolkit for different states for a whole variety of states that educators can click on find their state, find grants that are applicable to them as well as different federal grants. And we always recommend when in educator or an administrator is writing a grant, they really focus in on the outcomes in the skills learned from using that product."},{"startTime":1353.0,"endTime":1365.0,"body":"And we provide that to educators as they are filling out these grants and applications to help them get access to, you know, our products."},{"startTime":1365.0,"endTime":1374.0,"body":"And then we always put on a variety of that surround the country that teachers can come and learn and learn from other districts nearby as well."},{"startTime":1374.0,"endTime":1378.0,"body":"That's awesome. So it is definitely accessible. It's it's attainable to."},{"startTime":1378.0,"endTime":1398.0,"body":"Yeah. And you know, you can always start with one, right? We have classroom sets, but start with one, try it out, do small groups and you know, see what's possible recording those effort from students, those outcomes on really helps even adding to grant applications to get larger sets."},{"startTime":1398.0,"endTime":1411.0,"body":"That's my plan right off the bat in the spring when I start my coding unit and my coding unit has grown over the years to just from a couple of weeks to a month to a month and a half to almost three months now and we do different things."},{"startTime":1411.0,"endTime":1418.0,"body":"And I'm definitely that's that's one direction I want to go in with the small groups and rotations and things like that."},{"startTime":1418.0,"endTime":1430.0,"body":"So we have two more minutes left. This has been fantastic. Great conversation. Before we go, I'm going to play a game with you called input output where I'm going to ask you a question and just want to hear what you think the first thing comes to your mind."},{"startTime":1430.0,"endTime":1433.0,"body":"Okay. No wrong answers here."},{"startTime":1433.0,"endTime":1440.0,"body":"So first question is, favorite app on your phone that you just can't live without."},{"startTime":1440.0,"endTime":1454.0,"body":"Meet mobile, it's really it's, I'm a former swimmer. My daughter is a swimmer. They aggregate times and compare to other kids across the country."},{"startTime":1454.0,"endTime":1462.0,"body":"We see progression. It fits out data. Got to love data. So that is the one I probably go to most."},{"startTime":1462.0,"endTime":1466.0,"body":"There's a running theme here with with computer science and."},{"startTime":1466.0,"endTime":1476.0,"body":"I'm pretty sure I should have said spirit E.D.U. is my second favorite app. I can't live without my phone."},{"startTime":1476.0,"endTime":1483.0,"body":"I should have said that you can't say, so there you go. That works for both of us. And yes, sports and computer science right up my alley as well."},{"startTime":1483.0,"endTime":1488.0,"body":"Your favorite Sphero product and I have a feeling I know what it is. It's Indy."},{"startTime":1488.0,"endTime":1503.0,"body":"It is they are pre-k to two robot that you can program without a screen. We believe in starting computer science as early as possible because computational thinking and critical thinking are important to learn at a young age."},{"startTime":1503.0,"endTime":1516.0,"body":"But we don't always want our kids behind screens at the age of five. It is fun. It is so fun to bring out you have to stand up, walk around and interact with other kids."},{"startTime":1516.0,"endTime":1528.0,"body":"Or if you bring it to a group of educators, you'll never hear as much laughing and joy as you will from teachers playing with these color tiles and a little car that you can program with."},{"startTime":1528.0,"endTime":1530.0,"body":"So it's awesome."},{"startTime":1530.0,"endTime":1534.0,"body":"I did not expect you to say that I'm thinking I might have to get my hands on one of those."},{"startTime":1534.0,"endTime":1542.0,"body":"You definitely should. It's one of our newer products. It won a invention of the year time magazine in 2021."},{"startTime":1542.0,"endTime":1549.0,"body":"There are 222.
