integrating technology"},{"startTime":703.48,"endTime":704.64,"body":"in various ways."},{"startTime":704.64,"endTime":708.44,"body":"I mean, 10 years ago, every classroom in the building"},{"startTime":708.44,"endTime":713.28,"body":"had a kind of a smart board, but not every teacher used it."},{"startTime":713.28,"endTime":715.24,"body":"Some of them used it as a whiteboard,"},{"startTime":715.24,"endTime":717.96,"body":"some of them used it as just as a projection screen."},{"startTime":717.96,"endTime":721.44,"body":"Some actually used it to put their jackets on it at times, too."},{"startTime":721.44,"endTime":723.96,"body":"I think that cold stuff."},{"startTime":723.96,"endTime":728.0,"body":"And actually, it was only a terms of, like, how did that impact the school as a whole,"},{"startTime":1273.96,"endTime":1276.64,"body":"just that social emotional wellbeing?"},{"startTime":1276.64,"endTime":1278.92,"body":"How know,"},{"startTime":1553.36,"endTime":1556.96,"body":"having a few students come to your office, say a few announcements,"},{"startTime":1556.96,"endTime":1562.64,"body":"no one's really tuning into that, the way they're tuning in to the newscast."},{"startTime":1563.44,"endTime":1566.56,"body":"And it has a different engagement level."},{"startTime":1566.56,"endTime":1568.48,"body":"It has a different energy."},{"startTime":1568.48,"endTime":1570.8,"body":"It does something for your community."},{"startTime":1570.8,"endTime":1574.32,"body":"You're also teaching your fifth grade students who are the anchors"},{"startTime":1574.32,"endTime":1579.92,"body":"about what the world of news can look like from the technology on the back end"},{"startTime":1579.92,"endTime":1583.76,"body":"to being in front of a camera and listening and speaking skills"},{"startTime":1583.76,"endTime":1585.28,"body":"and things of that nature."},{"startTime":1585.28,"endTime":1590.48,"body":"But the reality is that we didn't realize when we first started"},{"startTime":1590.48,"endTime":1593.04,"body":"how big this was going to be."},{"startTime":1593.04,"endTime":1598.24,"body":"Like this was, we were on to something that was bigger than we realized when we first started."},{"startTime":1598.24,"endTime":1600.32,"body":"And that's the feedback I've also sign on."},{"startTime":1613.84,"endTime":1616.32,"body":"Parents are like, wait a minute, I want to hear the school news."},{"startTime":1616.32,"endTime":1618.32,"body":"Like, why can't I log on?"},{"startTime":1618.32,"endTime":1619.44,"body":"That's not okay."},{"startTime":1619.44,"endTime":1625.52,"body":"Because I do think that it really had many features to it"},{"startTime":1625.52,"endTime":1629.68,"body":"that enhanced morning announcements from being,"},{"startTime":1629.68,"endTime":1633.52,"body":"you know, should I listen or not to, I can't wait."},{"startTime":1633.52,"endTime":1635.2,"body":"Then down to students who are late."},{"startTime":1635.2,"endTime":1638.88,"body":"So I both set up hard when children are late for school, right?"},{"startTime":1638.88,"endTime":1640.64,"body":"I never blame the kids, right?"},{"startTime":1640.64,"endTime":1642.16,"body":"And so I always feel bad for them."},{"startTime":1642.16,"endTime":1646.08,"body":"They're like running in some kids are crying because they don't want to be late."},{"startTime":1646.08,"endTime":1651.44,"body":"And now I stand at arrival and I say, don't worry, you're just in time for BTV."},{"startTime":1651.44,"endTime":1657.44,"body":"And it turns a frown into a smile and children light up like,"},{"startTime":1657.44,"endTime":1658.88,"body":"oh, I'm okay."},{"startTime":1658.88,"endTime":1662.56,"body":"And it sets the tone for the whole day for them."},{"startTime":1662.56,"endTime":1666.88,"body":"So I think there are many aspects that we did not realize"},{"startTime":1666.88,"endTime":1668.72,"body":"how far reaching this would be."},{"startTime":1668.72,"endTime":1670.32,"body":"I love that. That's awesome to hear."},{"startTime":1670.32,"endTime":1675.44,"body":"I've had parent-teacher conferences with first grade parents who,"},{"startTime":1675.44,"endTime":1677.12,"body":"and we only take the fifth graders."},{"startTime":1677.12,"endTime":1678.48,"body":"It's more of a senior activity."},{"startTime":1678.48,"endTime":1683.44,"body":"And I have first grade parents saying, so when can my kid be on BTV?"},{"startTime":1683.44,"endTime":1686.96,"body":"My kid wants to be on BTV and I'll say, well, what grade are they in?"},{"startTime":1686.96,"endTime":1688.24,"body":"Or, you know, what class?"},{"startTime":1688.24,"endTime":1689.84,"body":"Oh, they're in first grade."},{"startTime":1689.84,"endTime":1694.48,"body":"So they're ready, it's actually striking a chord where they're already thinking,"},{"startTime":1694.48,"endTime":1695.68,"body":"well, I want to do that one day."},{"startTime":1695.68,"endTime":1696.8,"body":"That's pretty cool."},{"startTime":1696.8,"endTime":1697.84,"body":"Absolutely."},{"startTime":1697.84,"endTime":1701.6,"body":"I also think that the feedback has been good for you and I."},{"startTime":1702.64,"endTime":1706.08,"body":"And because it made us realize that we had to give this attention,"},{"startTime":1706.08,"endTime":1708.56,"body":"it wasn't just a pandemic thing."},{"startTime":1708.56,"endTime":1713.44,"body":"It was now going to be part of our school culture moving forward."},{"startTime":1713.44,"endTime":1716.48,"body":"And every year we're looking at ways to make it better"},{"startTime":1716.48,"endTime":1718.32,"body":"because of the feedback we've gotten."},{"startTime":1718.32,"endTime":1722.64,"body":"So I think it's a wonderful thing for people to give us the feedback"},{"startTime":1722.64,"endTime":1725.2,"body":"and then foster and enhance what we're doing because of it."},{"startTime":1725.2,"endTime":1726.16,"body":"Yeah, I couldn't agree more."},{"startTime":1726.16,"endTime":1727.52,"body":"That's exactly what it is."},{"startTime":1727.52,"endTime":1730.64,"body":"So here's where I want you to give a little advice to people."},{"startTime":1730.64,"endTime":1734.48,"body":"Right. So some school administrators and teachers, you know,"},{"startTime":1734.48,"endTime":1737.84,"body":"because we've had, like you said, we've had some people come to us and watch."},{"startTime":1737.84,"endTime":1741.04,"body":"And I've probably freaked them out a little bit because it is,"},{"startTime":1741.04,"endTime":1743.36,"body":"I want to say a little bit more of an elaborate setup."},{"startTime":1743.36,"endTime":1747.04,"body":"It's on the professional end of it for sure."},{"startTime":1747.04,"endTime":1751.28,"body":"But some school administrators, some teachers may feel completely overwhelmed"},{"startTime":1751.28,"endTime":1755.44,"body":"in starting a morning news program of their own, similar to that of BTV."},{"startTime":1755.44,"endTime":1758.88,"body":"Just because to some degree, there can be a fair amount of work"},{"startTime":1758.88,"endTime":1764.64,"body":"or pressure to be able to put on a daily newscast for 180 days every day, you know,"},{"startTime":1764.64,"endTime":1765.52,"body":"expect it there."},{"startTime":1765.52,"endTime":1769.52,"body":"And especially when it gets to that popularity within the school where they are"},{"startTime":1769.52,"endTime":1773.28,"body":"really truly expecting it and they want to see it, that could be hard."},{"startTime":1773.28,"endTime":1777.92,"body":"Even though it's been such a huge success and it has, you know,"},{"startTime":1777.92,"endTime":1780.32,"body":"I think at sometimes it gets bigger than like you said,"},{"startTime":1780.32,"endTime":1782.72,"body":"we can almost, you know, handle sometimes."},{"startTime":1782.72,"endTime":1786.72,"body":"It's apparent that there's a lot of work that goes into content creation of this type."},{"startTime":1787.44,"endTime":1791.04,"body":"Especially because teachers and students expect again to see it every day."},{"startTime":1791.04,"endTime":1794.64,"body":"So with that said, there has to be some challenge to it."},{"startTime":1794.64,"endTime":1798.48,"body":"There's something there that you need to drive,"},{"startTime":1798.48,"endTime":1800.4,"body":"want to have that drive to accomplish it."},{"startTime":1800.4,"endTime":1804.24,"body":"So what advice would you give to other principals and school administrators"},{"startTime":1804.24,"endTime":1808.32,"body":"who may be interested in starting a similar program like we did here with BTV?"},{"startTime":1808.32,"endTime":1810.88,"body":"I would say three things."},{"startTime":1810.88,"endTime":1822.64,"body":"First of all, absolutely, it is a huge undertaking to have 180 live, you know, morning news segments."},{"startTime":1822.64,"endTime":1826.88,"body":"However, number one, you have to believe in it as the administrator."},{"startTime":1826.88,"endTime":1834.32,"body":"You have to be able to have a vision to see the power of what this can do in your school"},{"startTime":1834.32,"endTime":1836.08,"body":"community and that it's worth it."},{"startTime":1836.08,"endTime":1837.6,"body":"That's number one."},{"startTime":1837.6,"endTime":1840.48,"body":"Number two, you have to find the right person, which I did."},{"startTime":1841.44,"endTime":1845.04,"body":"And so I knew like I couldn't take this on,"},{"startTime":1845.04,"endTime":1850.72,"body":"but I knew that I had someone in my school that was passionate about technology,"},{"startTime":1850.72,"endTime":1852.96,"body":"that was passionate about SEL."},{"startTime":1852.96,"endTime":1857.36,"body":"And so you have to find the right person to do it."},{"startTime":1857.36,"endTime":1862.0,"body":"That has the ability to do it, but also the willingness to do it."},{"startTime":1862.0,"endTime":1868.8,"body":"But then you also have to be willing as the administrator to give them the time."},{"startTime":1869.6,"endTime":1875.92,"body":"So I had to change your schedule to give you that morning time to do it, which is hard."},{"startTime":1875.92,"endTime":1880.8,"body":"That was very difficult for me to figure out how I was going to give you extra time to do this."},{"startTime":1880.8,"endTime":1886.4,"body":"But because I believed in it and I knew the power of it in our school community,"},{"startTime":1886.4,"endTime":1890.4,"body":"and because I knew you were the right person, I figured out how to give you the time."},{"startTime":1890.4,"endTime":1894.32,"body":"And the truth is, you'll never give, I know I can never give you enough time."},{"startTime":1894.32,"endTime":1896.0,"body":"You do things on your own."},{"startTime":1896.0,"endTime":1898.48,"body":"Again, that goes back to finding the right person."},{"startTime":1898.48,"endTime":1903.44,"body":"You go home, you do things, you come in morning arrival and they can't wait to get into their classrooms,"},{"startTime":2035.56,"endTime":2040.12,"body":"they don't have a problem getting kids to come in quickly because they don't want to grade."},{"startTime":2709.44,"endTime":2715.6,"body":"And the principal at the time had the technology teacher retiring and she said to me, she technology."},{"startTime":2718.76,"endTime":2720.0,"body":"You are so good."},{"startTime":2720.0,"endTime":2724.64,"body":"You could offer so much and she asked me if I wanted to be that
