may not be aware of what Common Sense"},{"startTime":412.08,"endTime":415.24,"body":"education is or what it provides for teachers,"},{"startTime":415.24,"endTime":418.44,"body":"how would you describe what the nonprofit program is?"},{"startTime":418.44,"endTime":422.72,"body":"So we are an organization that has been in existence"},{"startTime":422.72,"endTime":424.72,"body":"since 2003."},{"startTime":424.72,"endTime":428.36,"body":"So when we first started, we were rating and reviewing"},{"startTime":428.36,"endTime":431.76,"body":"movies, television shows, and things like that for parents."},{"startTime":431.76,"endTime":433.48,"body":"And we started as a parent's organization"},{"startTime":433.48,"endTime":436.0,"body":"to give parents information about the ways"},{"startTime":436.0,"endTime":438.92,"body":"that kids are using media and technology."},{"startTime":438.92,"endTime":440.96,"body":"Eventually, as technology evolved,"},{"startTime":440.96,"endTime":443.64,"body":"we evolved with it to share more information"},{"startTime":443.64,"endTime":446.36,"body":"about the kinds of technology that kids were using."},{"startTime":446.36,"endTime":450.08,"body":"With iPhones and smartphones and with all this access,"},{"startTime":450.08,"endTime":451.08,"body":"we also are doing that."},{"startTime":451.08,"endTime":452.96,"body":"But what educators know us for is we"},{"startTime":452.96,"endTime":456.44,"body":"have a full range of digital citizenship resources,"},{"startTime":456.44,"endTime":459.64,"body":"and they're all free and available for educators to use."},{"startTime":459.64,"endTime":462.8,"body":"And so that is mostly what folks think of when they"},{"startTime":462.8,"endTime":464.12,"body":"think of Common Sense."},{"startTime":464.12,"endTime":467.8,"body":"I'm excited about it because when I teach media arts"},{"startTime":467.8,"endTime":470.32,"body":"technology, I'm required by New York State"},{"startTime":470.32,"endTime":474.36,"body":"to do at least one digital citizenship less than a year."},{"startTime":474.36,"endTime":477.96,"body":"I do a little bit more than that, especially when things come up"},{"startTime":477.96,"endTime":480.72,"body":"along the way just because it naturally happens."},{"startTime":480.72,"endTime":483.4,"body":"So for me, it's exciting because I've used this before."},{"startTime":483.4,"endTime":484.88,"body":"And I could vouch."},{"startTime":484.88,"endTime":485.72,"body":"It's a great program."},{"startTime":485.72,"endTime":486.24,"body":"I love it."},{"startTime":486.24,"endTime":487.64,"body":"Yeah, thanks."},{"startTime":487.64,"endTime":489.6,"body":"I know we just came on the heels of digital citizenship"},{"startTime":489.6,"endTime":491.04,"body":"week last month."},{"startTime":491.04,"endTime":493.4,"body":"And so oftentimes, that's the introduction"},{"startTime":493.4,"endTime":496.08,"body":"that a lot of folks have to our content."},{"startTime":496.08,"endTime":499.36,"body":"But we cover more than even just the traditional digital"},{"startTime":499.36,"endTime":503.36,"body":"citizenship topics like safety and cyberbullying"},{"startTime":503.36,"endTime":505.08,"body":"and all of these things in privacy."},{"startTime":505.08,"endTime":507.72,"body":"But our content also addresses things"},{"startTime":507.72,"endTime":510.36,"body":"like social emotional learning in the digital world,"},{"startTime":510.36,"endTime":512.72,"body":"as well as digital well-being."},{"startTime":512.72,"endTime":514.92,"body":"And now AI literacy, right?"},{"startTime":514.92,"endTime":518.36,"body":"So it's a lot more about the ways that we are ethically"},{"startTime":518.36,"endTime":520.68,"body":"and emotionally engaged in media."},{"startTime":520.68,"endTime":521.2,"body":"Right."},{"startTime":521.2,"endTime":524.24,"body":"So you just mentioned a whole bunch of different curriculum"},{"startTime":524.24,"endTime":526.24,"body":"areas and resources that you have."},{"startTime":526.24,"endTime":529.72,"body":"How does it work together with just computer science?"},{"startTime":529.72,"endTime":531.84,"body":"How does that all come together with the common sense"},{"startTime":531.84,"endTime":532.52,"body":"education?"},{"startTime":532.52,"endTime":532.96,"body":"Yeah."},{"startTime":532.96,"endTime":537.64,"body":"So computer science, obviously, it's not"},{"startTime":537.64,"endTime":540.36,"body":"the first thing you think of when it comes to digital citizenship."},{"startTime":540.36,"endTime":544.16,"body":"But with a lot of the standards related to computer science,"},{"startTime":544.16,"endTime":546.64,"body":"such as around the impacts of computing,"},{"startTime":546.64,"endTime":548.48,"body":"and having students understand a lot"},{"startTime":548.48,"endTime":551.08,"body":"of those social emotional skills when it comes to being"},{"startTime":551.08,"endTime":552.16,"body":"creators."},{"startTime":552.16,"endTime":554.44,"body":"So our students, when we are giving them"},{"startTime":554.44,"endTime":556.16,"body":"these computer science skills, they"},{"startTime":556.16,"endTime":559.88,"body":"need to not only understand the ways in which they can be"},{"startTime":559.88,"endTime":560.88,"body":"coding, right?"},{"startTime":560.88,"endTime":562.8,"body":"It's not just the practice of making stuff,"},{"startTime":562.8,"endTime":566.36,"body":"but it's about the impacts of what those types of creations"},{"startTime":566.36,"endTime":568.48,"body":"are going to have on the real world."},{"startTime":568.48,"endTime":571.72,"body":"So I have a good friend that I work with here,"},{"startTime":571.72,"endTime":575.84,"body":"and a lot of times she focuses on SDG sustainable"},{"startTime":575.84,"endTime":576.76,"body":"development goals."},{"startTime":576.76,"endTime":580.12,"body":"And that's her platform by which she has her students"},{"startTime":580.12,"endTime":582.96,"body":"create is selecting one of the SDGs."},{"startTime":582.96,"endTime":586.76,"body":"So when it comes to thinking about other people,"},{"startTime":586.76,"endTime":590.0,"body":"taking those perspectives, thinking about deep empathy"},{"startTime":590.0,"endTime":591.68,"body":"that you might have for others who"},{"startTime":591.68,"endTime":594.16,"body":"are struggling with an issue, how are we"},{"startTime":594.16,"endTime":597.4,"body":"teaching our students to not only think about other people,"},{"startTime":597.4,"endTime":601.64,"body":"but also to act with compassion and be ethical in those"},{"startTime":601.64,"endTime":602.48,"body":"decisions."},{"startTime":602.48,"endTime":606.4,"body":"And so by before you take a big step of making a new project,"},{"startTime":606.4,"endTime":608.72,"body":"how do we practice some of those skills and get our students"},{"startTime":608.72,"endTime":610.0,"body":"thinking from that perspective?"},{"startTime":610.0,"endTime":613.2,"body":"So that's a lot of the content as it relates to ethics"},{"startTime":613.2,"endTime":616.48,"body":"and our use in everyday life that can then"},{"startTime":616.48,"endTime":619.0,"body":"be into what we're doing with computer science."},{"startTime":619.0,"endTime":622.84,"body":"You definitely got my attention in that because SEL is so"},{"startTime":622.84,"endTime":625.92,"body":"huge everywhere now since the pandemic."},{"startTime":625.92,"endTime":629.36,"body":"So for you to actually be able to weave that into the curriculum,"},{"startTime":629.36,"endTime":630.88,"body":"I think is amazing."},{"startTime":630.88,"endTime":634.76,"body":"Number one, but I think it also speaks volumes as to the thumb"},{"startTime":634.76,"endTime":637.8,"body":"that you have down on that button on comments"},{"startTime":637.8,"endTime":642.64,"body":"and just media and how to use it properly, that proper use."},{"startTime":642.64,"endTime":645.0,"body":"Yeah, and even starting in kindergarten,"},{"startTime":645.0,"endTime":647.24,"body":"when we look at the competencies around SEL,"},{"startTime":647.24,"endTime":650.12,"body":"I'm just pulling them up to look at them myself."},{"startTime":650.12,"endTime":651.68,"body":"We talk about self-awareness."},{"startTime":651.68,"endTime":654.72,"body":"We talk about self-management and responsible decision"},{"startTime":654.72,"endTime":658.64,"body":"making all of these things we need in our online life."},{"startTime":658.64,"endTime":661.92,"body":"So when it comes to recognizing our own feelings"},{"startTime":661.92,"endTime":665.92,"body":"and the ways that technology makes us want to click more"},{"startTime":665.92,"endTime":668.92,"body":"or want to behave badly sometimes, right?"},{"startTime":668.92,"endTime":671.4,"body":"So we have to have that inward awareness"},{"startTime":671.4,"endTime":674.24,"body":"about what technology makes us feel in the moment"},{"startTime":674.24,"endTime":676.0,"body":"and take that moment of reflection."},{"startTime":676.0,"endTime":679.64,"body":"And then also to have that capacity to make a good decision"},{"startTime":679.64,"endTime":682.12,"body":"when it comes to deciding what to share or what not to share,"},{"startTime":682.12,"endTime":684.56,"body":"or you know, already have decisions that we make online."},{"startTime":684.56,"endTime":688.0,"body":"So by giving kids scenarios, by giving them activities,"},{"startTime":688.0,"endTime":689.6,"body":"all of these activities that we have here"},{"startTime":689.6,"endTime":692.32,"body":"are very short 15 minute quick pieces"},{"startTime":692.32,"endTime":695.32,"body":"that are directly related to the digital skills"},{"startTime":695.32,"endTime":696.48,"body":"that our kids need."},{"startTime":696.48,"endTime":699.4,"body":"And they're starting in kindergarten all the way through high school"},{"startTime":699.4,"endTime":702.92,"body":"and get more and more complex as our students age up and develop."},{"startTime":702.92,"endTime":706.0,"body":"You hit on a really great point there, online life."},{"startTime":706.0,"endTime":707.08,"body":"What a phrase, right?"},{"startTime":707.08,"endTime":709.36,"body":"Online life versus real life."},{"startTime":709.36,"endTime":711.2,"body":"And you know, for years, just go,"},{"startTime":711.2,"endTime":714.4,"body":"it just take away the last 10 maybe before that,"},{"startTime":714.4,"endTime":716.0,"body":"it was real life, right?"},{"startTime":716.0,"endTime":717.52,"body":"Teaching our kids how to look both ways"},{"startTime":717.52,"endTime":720.24,"body":"before they cross the street, not to get into a car with a stranger,"},{"startTime":720.24,"endTime":723.16,"body":"not to talk to strangers, how to answer the phone properly."},{"startTime":723.16,"endTime":726.64,"body":"Now it not only is that real life scenario stuff"},{"startTime":726.64,"endTime":728.92,"body":"that they have to use to get through life,"},{"startTime":728.92,"endTime":731.12,"body":"but this online life, I love that."},{"startTime":731.12,"endTime":734.08,"body":"Yeah. And to them, you know, there is no difference, right?"},{"startTime":734.08,"endTime":735.72,"body":"We know that there is no difference"},{"startTime":735.72,"endTime":737.88,"body":"when they carry
