Where Spirit Dwells: Creating a Sacred Altar Space
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Your home can hold a quiet power, and it doesn’t take much to tap it. We sit down with priestess Ayaba Wynn to map out a simple, reliable way to build a sacred altar that supports real life: a white cloth, a clean glass of water, a candle, and your intention. From there, we show how to invite only good spirits, set respectful boundaries, and use daily practice to steady your mind when the world feels loud.
Ayaba explains how an altar becomes the hub for your spiritual entourage—ancestors by blood and guides by affinity—and why a short, consistent routine matters more than elaborate setups. You’ll learn practical protections like cascarilla circles and brick dust thresholds, how to consecrate new items, and the right way to offer coffee, flowers, incense, or a small pour of liquor without letting anything spoil. We talk safety too: tea lights over seven-day candles when pets or kids are around, covering an altar in the bedroom during intimacy, and making peace with tight spaces when ideal placement isn’t possible.
We also tackle the hard stuff: misinformation, performative priesthood, and predatory “gatekeepers.” Character gets magnified by initiation, so we stress doing your homework, leaning on reputable elders, and keeping your practice ethical, clean, and rooted in service. Along the way, you’ll hear why spiritual hygiene—tidy rooms, cool baths, calm minds—protects you as much as any prayer. Keep it simple, stay consistent, and let the space reflect who you are becoming.
If this conversation helps, subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave a review to tell us what part changed how you’ll set up your altar next.

SPEAKER_03Happy New Year.
SPEAKER_02Happy New Year for this Gregorian calendar, although we celebrate the real new year in March, you know. 21st, the solstice, but whatever. But you know, that's another conversation. But yes, as you can see, my people, we have Miss Ayaba Win with us this evening. How are you doing, Miss Ayaba?
SPEAKER_03Happy New Year, Feliz Anuable. Um today is the last day. I'm gonna say happy new year. I'm tired of saying happy new year to everybody.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's it, man.
SPEAKER_03I'm tired of it.
SPEAKER_02You're tired of it, right? Uh on this three kings day, right? We say that's it, right? No more.
SPEAKER_03Very important day.
Tonight’s Theme: Where Spirit Dwells
SPEAKER_02Peace to the people. So tonight, tonight's topic is where spirit dwells, creating a sacred altar space. Tonight's show will be based on creating altar spaces, and Ayaba Wynn will give her will give her her own perspective on how to create a space for your ancestral worship or where you want to connect, reconnect with your spirit, spirituality. So give us a walk through, Mr. Yaba.
Lukumi Roots And The Abóbora Altar
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so you know, we are at the beginning of 2026, and we know that there's so much happening in the world. And uh, you know, whether we choose to watch the news and TV or not, somehow it makes our way, it makes its way into our life. And so we have to maintain our Zen, we have to maintain our peace. And the first place that we maintain our peace is within our home and within our life. And uh, we can start with our spiritual altar. Um, you know, as many of the viewers know, I am a daughter of Oya, I'm a priestess of Oya. And uh as a part of our tradition, uh in Lukumi Santeria, yeah, uh, you know, we set up a spiritual altar called an abóbora. And so this is where we have our glasses of water, which are vessels uh for the spirits to transport down to you know travel um and to fill our our spirits with their presence.
SPEAKER_02Got you, got you.
Glasses Of Water, Candles, And Flowers
Your Spiritual Entourage Explained
SPEAKER_03So so a bovet a bovetta, as I seen before, with the glasses of water, with the glasses, with the glasses of it because it consists of glasses of water between what seven to twenty-one or to look we uh you know in my ultra house, we started out with a glass, okay, and then you build your eboboda up based on spiritual investigations, which we call misas or white tables, and these are um you know very uh popular in espiritismo where we lead uh you know spiritual investigations, the um the elder priests who conduct these misas, you know, become detectives, and we all collaborate on trying to help develop the other people that are in attendance in this spiritual mass, which also includes and the foundation of this spiritual mass is the glass of water, the candle, okay, and we put flowers up there on the um the spiritual table as well. You can also put you know different colonas, floor agua florida, florida water, um uh pompea, um canango water, you know, um tobacco, you know, um you know, white um the the orange blossom, whatever kelowna you want, siete machos, okay, especially if you're in 21 divisions, you know, uh each one of our spirits they call and Kelowna 1800. This that's another big one, yeah. And so, you know, you have these different colonas there to refresh your altar to call the spirits in your cordon spiritual, your quad is spiritual, your your spiritual quadrant. And I call it, you know, when I do readings for people who are not really in the tradition, I call it your spiritual entourage, you know, and everybody walks with an entourage, whether they know it or not, whether they like it or not, there's an entourage of spirits, and they could be your spirit guides, which you know have an affinity to you and not necessarily related to you by blood, and then you have your ancestros, your ancestors, your muetos, your eguns, um, that are uh connected to you by blood.
SPEAKER_00Gotcha.
SPEAKER_03And so this is where they all convene at this spiritual altar.
Daily Practice And Respectful Prayer
SPEAKER_02That's yeah, yeah. It's basically your spirit, your altar is your hub, your artillery. Oh my god, I love it. I love it. All right, so what spiritual responsibility comes with maintaining your altar?
Setting Intentions For Real-World Needs
SPEAKER_03Well, I mean, if you want to develop with as a spiritualist, you have to be at your abobara every day. Okay, whether it's the morning or whether it's the nighttime, you know. I was taught you greet the day with going to the abóbora. Okay. Some people prefer to shower first, yeah, and then they go to their abóbora and they do their cleaning with the you know, agua florida, you know, and they, you know, extend their hands out, and they could say life, peace, and progress, you know, to the spirits of and go down the list of all the spirits that they're aware of. Okay, and you know, these spirits that they're aware of could be based on spiritual investigations through Misa White Table that were identified for them. Sometimes the spirit guys they show up in your dream and they tell you who they are, right? And so, you know, with that, we stand at the abobata, we clean off with the colonna, whatever it is you choose, and you start connecting with them. Light, peace, and progress. Our father, hail Mary, you know, the Psalms, you know, talk about what's going on with your day, how you want your day to go, where you need the spirits to help you, you know, and you always pray for the spirit's upliftment and evolution, you pray for the forgiveness of their sins in the earthly plane and their advancement in the spiritual plane, and then you know, you you talk to them, even though you can't see them, they're there, the veil is thin. Okay, and once you finish, what we were taught is to knock three times.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, well, why is that?
Tobacco, Offerings, And Cultural Context
SPEAKER_03It's just to, you know, you can knock three times to alert them and let them know, like, okay, we're coming here to have like a little powwow to have a discussion about you know what's going on in my life, where I need you today. You know, say you have a busy, you know, I've you have a a really busy, uh, intense business meeting coming up, okay, and there's money on the line. You tell them, be like, look, and that's with respect. Look, I need you guys, you know, I'm you know, I'm willing, dealing with these people, they got big money, deep pockets, you know, and I need to secure about a hundred thousand, you know, to you know, put this business in motion. Yeah, that's you know, and if you know, like some of your ancestors or your spirit guys are big with money, you know, your grandfather owned a chain of stores or whatever, or he was a big real estate person in flatbush or whatever, you like, look, grandpa, you know, I know you got this. You, you know, you were big when you were alive. I need you to be super present, you know, and you know, if you need him to be super present, light up a candle for him, you know. Um, light a candle, you can, you know, pour a glass of liquor if your grandfather likes to drink Ray and nephew, or you know, whatever, some punching, whatever his preference was. You know, you pour a glass for him, you could even spray the area, you know, drop, you know, do some libation for him and be like, Look, look, Baba, I need you there, and I thank you for being in my life. Do and boom, that's it.
SPEAKER_02Are you allowed to put like tobacco products on your altar? Like, say, for instance, like I know different practices they tend to use tobacco, right? Yeah, like you definitely use cigars.
SPEAKER_03You definitely have a cigar to get in that meditative space, but also the tobacco. You know, if you're from the Caribbean, especially South America or any region where it was somewhat tropical, you know, tobacco was one of the main um um products, you know, uh that the Africans were, you know, um were forced to you know cultivate at once. And so, you know, the tobacco was also a spiritual thing for the indigenous people um to connect with spirit. So definitely, yeah, you want to light up a cigar, black and mild, you know, whatever it is, you know, get it popping. You're chewing some tobacco as you're talking to them, whatever works for you.
Beginner’s Guide: White Cloth And God Glass
SPEAKER_02Definitely, definitely. So, like for instance, uh this is just a general generic question. What if somebody, someone who's not in initiated in these ATR movements, right? Practices or sciences, and they like they would like to create an altar. How can one go about that? They they they they they don't have no background of no knowledge of no African spiritual practice systems, and they and they just feel like I want to create an altar. Something's telling me, something is compelling me to create an altar. How can we should you go about that?
Safety, Candles, And Practical Setup
SPEAKER_03Yeah, sure. So, you know, I always have my foundation with both myself and my godchildren in my ultra house. Um, we start off with a white cloth. That's the foundation, the foundation. Okay. Um, and um I show fum foom, it's the white cloth. And so you lay down a white cloth, and then the foundation is you get a big glass, we call it a god glass, which is incorporates all your spirits because a lot of times when you're first beginning, you don't know who's what. You know, and you may know you have a spirit team or you may not, and you're hoping to get one. So, what you do is you fill up that glass of water and your brain, you know, light peace and progress to the guides and protections of you know Alexa Smith, like peace, and this is just you know, a made-up, you know, but say this person, Alexa Smith, wants to set up this altar. She would say, like, peace and progress, the spirit guides and protections of Alexa Smith. She would say it three times and hold it up in the air and say, I dedicate this to you, spirit guides. You know, help me to build a relationship with you. You know, I'm dedicating dedicating this glass of water and this candle, this light to you, um, and these flowers to you. And I'm, you know, I'm praying that this will cement, build, and strengthen our connection. Okay, you put and what I do is I usually blow my breath in it, you know, just to like strengthen that. And I set it down uh and I dedicate the candlelight. It could be a little penny candle, it could be, you know, one of those big seven-day candles, it could be a little tea light, it don't matter. Okay, it's like some you know, people are stuck on this whole seven-day candle thing. That's great. Seven-day candles can you know cost a little bit of money, yeah. And but and also, too, if you work like a lot of people do, it's not wise to leave a seven-day candle burning, exactly, especially if you know or you suspect that there's blueheadia, obia, witchcraft, dark magic that's being done, or something ain't right. And then, too, if you got mice running around, a cat, you got children, you know, there's all kinds of knocking, and someone can knock it over. You don't want to risk that, so you turn the candles off when you leave the house. But a little tea light, white candle, you start there, glass of water, white candle, um, and then a bouquet of flowers. Okay, you have the flowers.
Deity Altars And Personal Devotion
SPEAKER_02So our altars um specific, can it be just a general altar? It has to be dedicated to a particular deity.
SPEAKER_03Look, there's many altars, but you always start down, start with your foundation, and the foundation is the abóbora. And from there, once you have uh once you you know get your consultas, your it your consultations with whoever it is, a Mambo, Hugan, a Santera, Santero, uh Obete, a Baba Law, whoever you go to get the consultation with, then you start building your altars. So, you know, um, you know, you have a connection to um Oshun or Ezali Frida, you know, and so you may not have formally received these um um entities, these spirits formally, but you know that there's a connection. You can, you know, get a little, you know, um a muñeca, a doll, a statue, you know, and you know, set it up on the on the side and have your dedicated spaces. So, you know, I've seen people have, you know, they may not formally have Oshun, but they know that they love Oshun. They're trying to cultivate, you know, a relationship, you know, not only with themselves, self-love, but maybe a relationship with a man or a woman that they would like to romantically be involved with. So they set up an altar to Oshun, which may include, you know, a glass of water, sunflowers, yellow candles, or gold or orange, a mirror, you know, um some makeup, you know, um perfume, a cologne, and then maybe the statue of Oshun or Ezlifrida or Anaisa, you know, depending on what tradition you're practicing.
Placement, Space Limits, And Feng Shui
SPEAKER_02All right. Does the positioning of the altar matter whether it's on the east, west, north, south?
SPEAKER_03Um, you know, it would be nice if we could set those things up in that um position, unless you've been specifically told, set it up wherever you can set it up.
SPEAKER_02Set up wherever you can set it up, right? Yeah, because I know usually positioning does matter, like you know, if it's on the east where the sun rises at, it'd be best to put it in the east. And depending, like, you know, it depend it uh what element it aligns with, you know. I'm saying if it's for the north for the earth or the south for for you know, fire, west for water, or east, you know, like do you we should put it there, or you know, that's all I was okay.
SPEAKER_03No, I I mean I love that, and that's you know, ideal. Like, you know, if you have space, like you know, if you have a nice brownstone in New York City or you live in the suburbs, you know, you got more space, that's great. But sometimes in New York City, with city living, you know, where things are tight, you know, you um it may be a challenge to put the eboboda or the spiritual altars in those positions. So if you can do that, definitely tap into that energy, you know, because Fen Shui uh, you know, is definitely based on where you position things, where you position the bed, where you position the mirrors, the you know, uh a water feature, like a little water fountain, candles, plants, and all that stuff. So if you can do that, that's great. But spirits are gonna come, they're gonna come, they're gonna no matter where they are.
Bedroom Altars, Intimacy, And Boundaries
SPEAKER_02All right. And how about as far as like say you are you? I'm glad you mentioned that not having the space, right? Depending on where you live at on the person's living, living situation. You can't have can you have an ultra within the same sharing the same living space as you, like a bed a bedroom, or it's not ideal to having a bedroom?
SPEAKER_03Look, um my above it isn't my bedroom. All right, the bedroom is the most intimate space, okay? And it's intimate because you sleep there. Uh, and when you sleep, are you vulnerable or are you not vulnerable?
SPEAKER_02You you are vulnerable, but I I I ask that because you know, say outside of this as the intimate space of us sleeping and resting that. What if you like, you know, you you would you and your partner are engaging some kind of intimacy? Do you feel it's safe to do that in front of the altar?
SPEAKER_03Sure. Look, you know, to each his own. If you want to, I and I've heard of people, you know, covering the altar, they'll have like a white cloth and they'll they'll cover it, okay, while they're engaged in sex, and that's you know, that's fine. Um, but you know, whether the altar is in your room or not, the spirits see you, they see you having sex. We don't want to know that they're watching us because it's like a little weird.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03But you know, the house is an intimate space, you know. Um, and granted, like, you know, I have orishas because um, you know, I'm a priest of old cha. My uh old cha is not inside my bedroom, okay. Um, and especially with the orishas, and I'm sure with the loas and voodoo and and whatever other traditions, you know, you should not be walking around them naked uh willingly and you know, and having sex in front of them and all of that. Okay. Um, so but the abobada, you know, for some people, they need to have it in the room. People have night terrors and they're being elevated, you know, uh uh levitated out of the bed.
SPEAKER_02You know what I'm saying? And like you sound like the exorcist now. Come on, come on.
SPEAKER_03It's real, it's real. I'm telling you, it's real.
SPEAKER_02You know what she did? Paralysis. That's Pandarda. Come on.
Night Terrors, Protections, And Flexibility
SPEAKER_03I mean, look, it's real. Like, the shit is real. Okay. And, you know, I know people, you know, there's some people that are very formal and traditional and particular. And we call that manyatical. They're very like, it has to stay in this place and it has to be there. But you know, in spiritual traditions, you have to allow for flexibility. Okay. And, you know, um, as long as you're, you know, you're in alignment with the majority of the practices, you have to be flexible. And I know some traditions, yeah, you can't have sex. You there's nothing spiritual in your room. But again, some people get consultants, you know, they get uh um readings, uh, they speak with their godparent, and they're having night terrors. You know, they're spirits in their room, they're being lifted out of the bed. Like I'm telling you, this is real. And so you gotta have spiritual protections in your bedroom. And what better place, what better thing to put in your bedroom than the spiritual altar?
SPEAKER_02Okay, I got you. So you see, so based on that perspective, I understand where you're coming from now, from that in that scenario.
SPEAKER_03And look, some people, some people they got it so bad sleeping that they gotta sleep with feathers, birds under the bed.
SPEAKER_02Now, hold hold up now. You said what birds under the bed?
Consecration, New Items, And Thrifting Risks
SPEAKER_03If you got a succubus or an incubus harassing you at night while you sleep, trying to have sex with you, okay, there are certain remedies and certain prescriptions and rituals include having a bird under the bed. And that's how bad it is. And people don't talk about it, they're scary, they don't know what to do with it. But look, I've read a ton of people I've been in this tradition since 2000. I'm sure you know, there's people that are older than me. Much respect to the elders, okay, but actively in this tradition since 2000. Active, and people got it back, and people don't talk about it, they don't talk about it, and there's some serious stuff.
SPEAKER_02There's some serious stuff. Wow, yeah, that's wow. Like I heard of I heard of night terrorism, people are being attacked by you know different entities and stuff, and I um I usually recommend you you know you go to the you go to you go back to the basics to guard yourself. You like you get some garlic, you know what I'm saying? You say a few words over it, it's your intentions too securing your mind. You know, what you eat also if you consume alcohol before bed. Yep, yeah, be careful with that too. You know, purify your home, consecrate your area, and you know that the fact that I'm saying consecration, when adding particular items on your ulcer, should they be constant, it should be purified and consecrated, right? Of course, same thing, yeah.
SPEAKER_03You know, some people, you know, people when they know you're in the tradition, they want to bring you gifts, they want to bring you a seashell or a stone, a crystal, you know, jewelry, whatever, a mirror, a fancy mirror, whatever it is. You got to say prayers over that. You gotta get some holy water, some agua florida. If you got some herbs mixed up, you gotta bless it, say prayers over it before you sit anything down at that altar. Because you could sit something down. Maybe someone got you a muñeca, they got you a doll from Ghana or from Panama, and the doll looks beautiful, and they say here, you know, and you're like, Oh, I love this doll. I'm gonna put it right on my altar. You put it on the altar, and you go to sleep, and you really don't go to sleep because you got some spirits running around, you know, making noises, you're seeing shadows, you're hearing people knocking on the on the wall, knocking on the door, and there's no one there. That's because these things hold spirits, they hold energy, and especially if you like to thrift. We haven't even gotten into thrifting and secondhand stuff.
Colors, Cloths, And When To Use Black
SPEAKER_02We have not gotten we can go that we can go directly into that. So, what's in the so the that's a good that's a good that's a good thing you brought up a good aspect. So, when when a person has decided to create a sacred space and build an altar for themselves, right? Yes, do you prefer for them to use if it's not passed down from your tradition or an elder, it's best to use new items, right? Like, does the cloth play the part, the color of the cloth, you know, because you know, color holds vibration. Does that play a part when creating your um altar?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I would say if you're a beginner, even if you've entered in as a novice in uh voodoo or a novice, uh, you know, an allel and lukumisantaria, and you're just getting started. You always your foundation is always ashell fum foom, the white cloth, always okay. You're not gonna put black down. You put black down, it sounds like you're about to work some brewed here and cultivate some dark energy, or you know what I'm saying? Like really, sometimes it depends on the work you're doing. Sometimes there's spiritual work that requires you to lay down a black cloth and work with black candles, like reversals and things like that. Yeah, I'm not negating that, that's fine and judgment free. But as a beginner who you know, nine times out of ten, you're coming into these ATR traditions, okay, um, because you have had phenomenal experiences happen to you, or there's a missing link and you're trying to figure it out, okay. So, you know, your baby, just as when you make ultra and you receive your crown in ultra santo, you make santo your baby, the yaw is a baby, just beginning in the tradition. So you gotta walk before you run, crawl before you walk, right? And so we always start with the white cloth, and unless your baba, your madrina, your padrino, your godparent has said no, for you you need to have an altar, and we need to make it all red.
SPEAKER_02You may have a pombagira from you know Brazil, or the con the conduit, I think it's saying correctly, uh-huh.
SPEAKER_03Um banda, yeah. All those traditions that you know they love pombagira, which is you know, very she's a woman of the night. They portray her as a woman of the night, but she's very close to Eshu, and you know, she has that Papa Legba-ish energy, you know, and there's different interpretations of who she is, but um, you know, she oftentimes you'll see her altars with red, red and black.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, okay, very passionate colors, yes, red and black. All right, so how can you how can one like how can I go about say I got my altar set up, right? And I'm only speaking in engine, you know, for educational purposes, because it's something I I know how to do already, but just just for the sake of listeners and viewers, right? You got your altar set up, and you know, you were told, like, you know, this is a place, your altar is a sacred space where you invite your ancestors to come work with you and your spirit guide. How can I set up boundaries so that no uh malevolent forces can enter that cipher?
SPEAKER_03Okay, so the space in where you have your altar and or your altars is very important, okay. We work with uh uh spiritual chalk called cascaria, okay, which is made of powdered eggshell, and um we use that especially with our ancestor shrine, uh, which is separate from our abobara. So the ancestor shrine holds our ancestral spirits, spirits in our bloodline, and so in order to you know make a distinction of spirits of the light of our ancestors, we draw a circle around the area with this spiritual chalk. Yeah, and so that means that when we give light, um candlelight, when we give flowers, when we put food down, you know, uh liquor, it is for our ancestors only, or for uh whatever spirits we're working with, and not for spirits of our neighbors next door.
SPEAKER_02Hold on, beloved. Somebody said somebody said um a lot root. What is that?
SPEAKER_03Can you can you I don't know what a lot is?
SPEAKER_02I don't know what a lot root is, but you know, uh, can you educate me on that? I'll be glad to know what that is. You may continue, sister.
SPEAKER_03Uh, and so you know, we draw that line using the chalk, okay. And they do that in um in in Wicca too. Who you know, you draw the circle, you know, circle of protection. All right, you can put sea salt around the area if you don't have the cascarilla until you can get the cascarilla or whatever spiritual chalk I know in voodoo is is the cornmeal, right?
SPEAKER_02Um they use cornmeal, flour, cornmeal, flour, whatever.
SPEAKER_03Okay, and so any of these things is you have to set your intention as you're doing this, and we even do it over the doors that enter into our house.
SPEAKER_02Oh, using that word gopher lines over the doors, yes, brick dust, gopher's dust, whatever you can do.
SPEAKER_03Brick dust, the brick dust goes down on the floor over the threshold. Okay, and that's a very hoodoo, very southern thing. Okay, as and but you got to set your intention with that. But we work with the cascaria by you know putting the marks over our door, and with each mark, we're saying prayers to protect us from equ from death and and evil spirits. It sounds like root or obial, it's all spiritualism, just so you know.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah, yeah, we we know that, brother. That's what we're talking about.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, we know that. Thank you.
SPEAKER_02Thank you, though. Yeah, appreciate that. But yeah, because you said something else about some root word, but yeah, yeah.
Opening And Closing Prayers That Guard
SPEAKER_03I mean, this is all, you know, you will see similarities in every tradition, okay. And so if you're a purist, a lot of times you will have issues with other people and other traditions, okay, or variations of a tradition, and there's big disputes between Ishe She and you know, uh, you know, if I practice in say Cuba, okay. There's there's you know, the in the um what's happening in Africa and what's happening in Cuba, okay. And so there's disputes there, there's disputes between ifa and lookumi, santaria. You know, it's always gonna be something, but the origins are very similar similar, okay.
Schedules, Meditation, And Mantras
SPEAKER_02Yeah, different practice. I always use the same analogy, and it's like a constant repeat. I will say we all are in the same house, but just in different rooms, yes, same house, different rooms, and um, different rooms and different rules, but you know, the elements stay the same. Water is water, it could be rain, sleep, snow, rain, water is water in different forms. Oh, yes, you get what I'm saying? So we could just we could all have different perspectives, but as a person has a uh a fundamental mind without barriers, they could they could just navigate and see the similarities. So we protect our altar, our home, by building a consecrated um support circle, secure a security circle, right? Because I've seen that that in other forms of like high magic ceremonies, we create a circle to um you know create that barrier for your altar. Yeah, so how can once one begins to work with he or she's altar you know, altar and they build that relationship with them, with their spirit, how can they like say they go and they they have this, they have their little power out with the spiritual circle, how can they make sure that it's it's fully secure when it's time to close it? Like, okay, we got the circle in place, right? Should they also like say like a particular prayer before going in?
SPEAKER_03Sure, the foundation, at least in my tradition, the foundation is the Alan Kardec book and the book of you know aspiratism, you know, aspiratismo.
SPEAKER_00I still got that book, yeah.
SPEAKER_03And it's an ancient book. Like, I hate reading it because it's like it's almost like yes.
SPEAKER_02You want Johnny Depp in the cover?
SPEAKER_03Oh my god. There's a new book that's out that you know it's much, it's the modernized version, and I love it. I didn't pull it, it's somewhere up on my shelf. Okay, but you start out the prayers with inviting good spirits, spirits of the light, spirits from your spirit team. Okay, you gotta set the terms, all right. These spirits, and I don't wanna be, I don't want to like manhandle the spirits and be um and portray it to be like you being disrespectful to the spirits, but you gotta set the tone and you gotta be very um specific about inviting spirits of the light, okay? Because if you're just saying, okay, everybody come, come through, you know, it becomes like Grand Central Station or Times Square, and you really got some spiritual issues. So you gotta command them basically, you gotta command them, but in a respectful way, and be like, Look, I'm not having no, you know, dark entities or the neighbor next door, or even my roommate for that matter. You you belong to my roommate, you stay over there, you know what I'm saying? And and so you gotta set the foundation and the ground rules, and you do it with respect. And there are prayers where you invite the good spirits to come in. That is an opening prayer for misas, for you know, white tables and everything. And then once you say your prayers and boom, boom, boom, you know, and you give your spirits some tasks to do to work things out for you, then you close it and you say thank you for everything you've done, and you properly close it that way. Thank you, good spirits, for guiding me. You know, um, continue to bless and protect and support me, and so many words. You know, people have their own, you know, spins and takes on that.
Offerings That Uplift, Not Rot
SPEAKER_02All right, does um does like oh she wow, I'm glad you said that. I also had another question I'm thinking right now because it's like so many, so many things running through. So after we we do that, we close our altar or we prayed. Are there particular days? Should we set a particular schedule for our altar?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I mean, if you're very like if you're organized like that, if you were OCD type A personality, or if you're not and you're trying to for 2026 trying to be that way, then do it. If you know in the morning you're not a morning person, you know, and everything is always in a rush, try to incorporate something, at least clean it off with the Florida water, boom, boom, boom, like peace and progress. You know, I'm praying you guide me through the day, bless and protect every breath and every step I take. Thank you very much. Boom, boom, knock three times, okay, and be out the door. But if you really want to get into it, you set the time where you can dedicate at least 15 to 20 minutes sitting and meditating, whatever that means to you.
SPEAKER_02Sitting and meditating, definitely 15 minutes a day, right?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and and you know, people always tell me, Okay, you need to meditate, and I would be like, What does that mean? Meditation could be you sitting in quiet, but for me, sometimes it's sitting in quiet, but because I practice in Hinduism as well with the mantras and that ancient Sanskrit, which is super potent and powerful, I will incorporate mantras.
SPEAKER_02Really?
SPEAKER_03Yes, in that 15-20 minutes, you know, it's my traditional, you know, majubas, you know, my ebayes, my kinkamache's, my alafias. Okay, and then it's going into you know, um, the maybe the traditional prayers, our father hail mary, if I want to. Then I, you know, get into it. I just have a conversation with them. Look, you know, having you know challenges with this, boom, boom, boom, help me out, blah blah blah. Okay, and then you know, you close it out.
SPEAKER_02Any offerings should be made on the altar?
Spiritual Hygiene And Clean Spaces
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you can like even you know, you lighting an incense, you putting down cafe negro or cafe con you know, azuka, you know, uh black coffee, black coffee with sugar, you know, cafe con leche, uh, you know, leche, you know, whatever it is that you're going to offer. You could put down um um cake, uh cookies, candy, you know, um uh, you know, a bottle of liquor, you know, or pour some beer out in a glass, you know, whatever offerings, just do not let anything rot or go bad on your altar.
SPEAKER_02Most definitely it'll go bad because I have speaking, as you know, I have about four altars.
SPEAKER_03You got a plethora, you have a ton of plethora.
SPEAKER_02Right? I got four altars, I'll keep it real. You know, ancestral and others of stuff I you know I deal with, you know, within within my culture. And there are times when I first got into it, and again, I'm a novice. I always told people I'm a novice in this at this. When I first started, I used to be like, I want to see signs if these things are really there, the power. And you know, being a person very very reluctant about that, I don't see that till one day I actually start seeing signs, started feeling that the uh the presence there. I was like, Oh shoot, this this stuff is real. You know, I had that mind, you know, that western mind, like I gotta see to believe it. So science, you know, yeah, don't believe that stuff is spooky. Uh it showing it showing me different. I've seen it for myself. Okay, and it and I always tell people, you know, it's about keeping your altar clean, respecting your altar the time, not using vulgarity around them. Yes, being annoying, very important, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Spiritual hygiene, you gotta be clean, and again, that spiritual hygiene is big, and it's it's like, okay, so you have your spiritual altar set up, but your room is a wreck. Now, you know, I was always told that your space is a reflection of what is going on in your mind, what is happening to you emotionally and psychologically. And I'm not saying I'm perfect, there have been times. Where I looked around and the room is a wreck from you know running, you know, in and out the house, going to work, going to, you know, be work a ceremony, going out with friends, whatever. And then I come back. The clothes are all over the place. You don't feel like cleaning anything up because you're exhausted. But let me know, let me tell you that the spirits will come to you. And my grandmother came to me, God rest the soul, Ibaye, um, Carmen Jimenez. She came to me in my dream, and she was my thica when she was alive. She was OCD, she needed everything in its place. She she came to me in my dream, and she said, Those clothes over there on that chair. You better take those clothes off that chair and clean up this place. Because this is not this is not a good look. She said it in so many words. Okay, and you didn't have to tell me twice. Once I got up, I was like, Oh no, we cannot, we cannot be living this way. And it wasn't like it was just clothes all over the place. So you gotta make sure your space, especially where your altar is, is clean as best as you can.
Cooling Baths, Herbs, And Staying Calm
SPEAKER_02Yeah, your mind, everything, it's everything plays a part, everything factor in fake the physical, you know, it's for the physical and the spiritual is hand in hand.
SPEAKER_03So you gotta look at yourself, you know, and in this tradition, in Lukumi Santaria, and many of the traditions, it's not about getting these energies, receiving santo, receiving the loa to be throwing shit at people. It's not about that. Exactly, it is about you developing yourself, helping you to survive in this world, in this earthly plane, in this earthly existence, because there is a wickedness out here, okay. You can either have hell on earth or heaven on earth, okay. That's all it is, it's a state of mind, but also you are amidst people that are agents in disguise. They are they are spirits that are masking themselves behind people, okay. And so, with that, you gotta have this. Is your this is your artillery, this is your army that you are building up. This is your these are the people that are gonna go, these are the spirits that are gonna go to bath for you. They're gonna make sure that when you go out there in that world, that those crazy people on the train don't slap you in the face, they slap somebody else. You don't want them to slap anybody, but you don't want to be the one where they slap you in the face.
SPEAKER_02Uh I call that that's that's that's that's a that's that's mental hygiene right there. That's a mental health issue with those people.
SPEAKER_03It's a mental health issue, but I have had people in the tradition, not in the tradition, and they should have been working their spirits or whatever, they got yoked up out in the street by strangers.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I know. Yo, don't get me wrong, yeah, because you you negate negative energy attaches to the weakest link, and that's why I say about keeping your spiritual hygiene up to par is constantly in a in a good positive state of frequency, meditation, washing off with herbs, watching what you intake, what you listen to, what you watch. You know what I'm saying? You gotta keep yourself clean, keep your temper at bay.
Scams, Gatekeepers, And Community Ethics
SPEAKER_03You gotta keep you you gotta stay cool, and and many of our African-based traditions, it is good to stay cool, okay. And that is your the cooling energy is cultivated by doing the herb baths, working with the plants and the herbs, okay, and cultivating a relationship, a connection with the plant spirits, okay. And I know people like to smoke the plants, they like to smoke the herb, you know, and I get it, but even when you smoke the herb, okay, there's a spirit attached to it, and you know, I have friends that they smoke it, but they ask permission before they smoke every time they light up a word, yes, because they they talk into the marijuana plant, and nowadays you don't know where this weed is coming from, you know, it's the fentanyl fentanyl K2.
SPEAKER_02I've seen it, people are going cray cray out here, and not to veer off this topic of ultra, because you know, we we we spoke said as much as we can about the ultra, but I want to speak more about what's happening within these spiritual um sciences, the community. I had a few guests up on here. Shout out to Zania, Zania Robinson, who was on Robinson, Rodriguez, she was on here and she spoke about um locally as well. Okay, and we see what's going on within even within the Haitian voodoo community, there are a lot of people out there that are preying on the week, right? Yeah, and pretending to be gatekeepers and such of what's taking place, and they miss like giving people misinformation. How do how do you how do you view that?
SPEAKER_03Look, I you know, and I've seen people, like I've seen people go online, and you know, look, I'm a daughter of Oya, and there's you know, what better person to know about their relationship with Oya than a person who has been initiated in the mysteries of Oya? Well, you have people out there who, you know, they may have read the book about what who Oya is or who Shango is, or Shun or whatever, and they tell the stories to educate, but there's a line that you have to be very careful with because you know, there's a lot of people out here watching this that you know are are craving information, and that's the vulner that's where people become vulnerable because they take anything in and um they run with it.
SPEAKER_02I want to sort of elaborate on that too. Not only information misinformation, you got they preying on people that are misinformed in a sense of they are giving them false false expectations, yeah, in regards to initiation, right? They are running, they are running these so-called houses like it's a cult, right? And they some of them are sexually they deviants.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I mean, I've heard stories, okay, and I would not I would not blame that on any tradition, okay? It's not the tradition, it's the person saw the power that they would get from initiation as a high priest in whatever tradition, and they abused it. And you know, a lot of times when you go through initiation, they say once you become initiated as a priest, mambo hugan, it makes you more of who you are, it magnifies. So if you are a dutchy person before you get initiated, and you get initiated, you might be much dust uh dutchier. Okay, and the ego gets super inflated because now you got this crown, okay, and now you want to like preach to the masses that you got this and this, and I'll do this, I'll make this bath and all that. And I'm just like, wait a minute. I'm looking at some of these people, I'm like, I would not buy I wouldn't buy a damn thing from you because I don't know what kind of spirit, what kind of energy you're working with. I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_02So they're gonna ship you a little careful, they're gonna ship you a pot with chicken bones in there with from KFC talking about they've been charged.
SPEAKER_03No, no, it don't work like that. It don't work like that. We I like I said, I have god children that flew out from California to get what they needed to get, okay, and then they were able to bring it however they would need it needed to bring it back. I had people coming in from Ohio, okay. And you do what you gotta do, you get you hop your ass on the plane or on the bus and you bring yourself to get what you need, okay. You gotta actually know what's going on. No, you're not gonna know what's inside of the elegba, you're not gonna know what's inside the oh soon, okay, because it's not your business. If you are not initiated as a uh a priest in the tradition, no, you cannot know what's in there, okay? But just know that you got it from a reputable source, okay. And so, you know, people really have to do their research, okay, because this tradition is community, it's community, community, and we all gotta check each other.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they is there a council that handles like that handles like a like a council of affairs that handles all these like mishaps that take place, any um malfeasance.
Accountability, Elders, And Ceremony Standards
SPEAKER_03You would like to think like every Ultra house, every voodoo house, you know, they have a you know a council or a group of elders, but sometimes those elders ain't no better than the next person, and sometimes some of the people they be cosigning bullshit, okay. And I gotta be honest with you, there are some elders that are very reputable, reputable, and they don't put up with anything, okay, provided that they know the whole story, you know. And I have been in different ceremonies where there have been priests that try to shortchange um people that were being crowned in Ultra, and I had elder priests come and blast that person on the spot in front of everybody. Where is this Yahoo's food? Why am I not seeing food in this kitchen? Okay, you better have somebody run out and buy uh a couple hundred dollars worth of groceries because we're not doing this ceremony without food for the Yahoo.
SPEAKER_02Gotcha.
SPEAKER_03So, you know, if you don't speak up, you are complicit with the bullshit, you are complicit with the nonsense. You know, and as elders, if you see something is wrong, you gotta speak up. Because if you don't, you co-sign it. And that doesn't that doesn't bode well, you know, and that's why some people have had very um you know troubling experiences, not just in my tradition, but in other traditions as well. There's always gonna be politics, you know that. Of course, people are always gonna, you know, their heads are gonna be gassed up. But we gotta be careful. We gotta know. Um, we gotta know what we're getting into. Because playing with people's spirituality is it's not a joke, it's not a game.
SPEAKER_02I got you. Please, please.
SPEAKER_03You can open up Pandora's box, and then it's hard to close it.
SPEAKER_02It's true, it's true, it's true, it's true. And I I'm glad that we we had you here on that because I know the altar is something that you know it's a conversation, it's not as deep as one can make it. You know what I'm saying? But it could give, I'm glad it gives you the foundation of how one can create one, create a sacred space, make sure it's clean, smudge it out, instance it out, tablecloth, go with the most basic thing. Don't try to make it elaborate because you see someone else's altar. You can be like, you know, I want to imitate how that looks, make mine like that because their work, their work may be different from yours.
SPEAKER_03It's all a sensory experience, and you have to be connected to the things that you have, and do not allow someone else to dictate what you put on your altar unless it's a god parent and they have a justified reason for that.
SPEAKER_02Definitely, definitely, you know what I'm saying?
SPEAKER_03So if you got you know, your boyfriend or your girlfriend's like, Yeah, why don't you put this? Why don't you put that? No, how about we set up an altar for you? You can have your altar, I can have my altar, you know.
SPEAKER_02Peace. We got somebody watching from Libya.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god, hello, Libya.
SPEAKER_02Peace, peace, Libya in the motherland, huh? That's what's up. Wow, that's amazing.
SPEAKER_03Shout out, yeah, man. Um, so yeah, and so you know that's that's the part of it. Because if you want your third eye to strengthen, you want that kundalini to rise, that spiritual current, so that you can have this spiritual awakening, so that you can commune with the spirit, so that you can, when you work mises, spiritual masses, you know, investigations, spiritual investigations, your ashe, your spirit, your intuition is gonna be popping. And you want it to pop like that, you gotta sit at your abulba every day. Make time. And I said, fit that the formula is at least 15 to 20 minutes a day.
Keep It Simple: Altar Essentials
SPEAKER_02That's it. I respect that, sis. People, people that are watching, are listening. Don't forget to comment, like, share, and subscribe. We got super chats, the brother, pardon me, the sister is doing a great job. I'm your brother, Mikey Fever. Keep your eye out on the show. We have more of this coming up. We gotta bring her back up to speak more about these about these subjects because she's very knowledgeable.
SPEAKER_03Um, so look, I just wanted to um say that um there is a priest of Shango, Oba Ade Dayo. Um, he is uh you know originally from New York, but he's down, I think, in Atlanta now. Um, he has written a book. Oh, oh gosh.
SPEAKER_02Where's your background, man?
SPEAKER_03Here it is.
SPEAKER_02What's cool?
SPEAKER_03A glass of water and a candle. Okay. And you can get it on Amazon, and it's a real basic guide to guide you. He is in the tradition. Um, and so you will be able to set up your altar uh, you know, with the guidance of Oba Ade Dayo's um book. Okay, and he's a priest of OCA. I believe he was crowned in Cuba. He's a you know, massive historian, so this is definitely credible. I you know, I definitely co-sign this.
SPEAKER_02A glass, a glass, water, and a candle, water and a candle. Okay, see, it's very simple.
SPEAKER_03Okay, and it's oba de uh okay, and you can get that on Amazon. Um, and uh, you know, but if you're in the tradition already, you probably don't need this. But sometimes people like to keep the book in their collection, and you know, in case you get, you know, have god children, you can be like, look, you can either take this book or you know, buy it online.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and you can also, you know, it's you're never too old to learn, you know.
SPEAKER_03Never too old to learn.
SPEAKER_02You learn every day, every day is every day is a lesson. Oh my god, yeah. I appreciate you for coming out tonight for real, Ayabas. You did your thing. Where could where can the people meet you at?
SPEAKER_03Um, so I am on uh on Instagram at Ayabas A Y A B A S Win W Y N D. W-Y-N-D. And um you can the the page is private, but just you know, you could either send me DM me and tell me that you heard me on um uh the MY uh NYP talk show, yeah. Um, or just you know, put in a follow request and then you can, you know, we can get it started. I read in uh Nama State Bookshop um on Fridays from 4 to 8 p.m. But you will have to book online because I stay booked, okay?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, she's and um huh. I was telling him she's on point with her with her craft, she's on point.
SPEAKER_03I, you know, I'm uh it's the spirits. All you know, all praise and honor due to the eggon my ferifumoya, mm bobo disha bobo egun. Um, and so you can find me there. And then, you know, um I'm doing general readings now for all the signs, um, the astrological signs. So I have posted for Virgo, Libra, and Leo, and I'm gonna post some more tonight. So if you want to go online and check out your quickie general read, um, you can, it'll probably be available after 11.
SPEAKER_02All right, that's peace, man. Listeners and viewers, NYP family. Don't forget to comment, like, share, subscribe, super chats, check out the website. We have merch. Thank you for all that you have done. Happy New Year to everyone, happy new year to you, sister Yabbas, as well.

Book Recommendation And Resources
SPEAKER_02And with that being said, we are up out of here, my people. Peace and love. Peace. And we out.
